As the stars of Happy Gilmore reunite for a long overdue sequel, Adam Sandler is paying tribute to one original cast member.

The 2x Golden Globe nominee mourned the death of his alligator co-star Morris, who played the titular character’s nemesis in the 1996 golf comedy, on Wednesday with a sweet tribute to the reptilian actor on Instagram.

“Goodbye, Morris. We are all gonna miss you,” he captioned the post. “You could be hard on directors, make-up artists, costumers – really anyone with arms or legs – but I know you did it for the ultimate good of the film. The day you wouldn’t come out of your trailer unless we sent in 40 heads of lettuce taught me a powerful lesson: never compromise your art. I will never forget at craft service that time when we split the Three Musketeers bar and you let me have the bigger half. But that’s who you were.

Adam Sandler paid a heartfelt tribute to one of his Happy Gilmore “costars” after the announcement of their death at the age of “well over 80 years old.” The reason for the vagueness of the age, is that the star in question was Morris the alligator, who appeared in the movie with Sandler as one of several TV and movie roles. The original news of the reptile’s death was revealed by Colorado Gator Farm owner Jay Young, who said in a Facebook video, “While we knew this was inevitable, we are very saddened by his passing to old age.”

Sandler was also saddened by the news, and took to his own social media account to share a lengthy post in memory of the alligator. Tinged with more than a little of Sandler's brand of humor, he wrote:

When a single frame can spark this much excitement, you know something special is brewing. Netflix is bringing some of the most iconic faces of the movie industry in its upcoming movie Jay Kelly, and fans can’t keep calm. Here, we have George Clooney, Adam Sandler, and Laura Dern leading the way with Noah Baumbach in the director’s chair.

Netflix is doubling down on Adam Sandler movies in 2025. Roughly four months after Happy Gilmore 2 drops onto the streamer, fans of the comedic actor will be able to watch the comedy-drama Jay Kelly, in which Sandler stars alongside George Clooney.

Per Deadline, Netflix has announced the release dates for Jay Kelly. The coming-of-age comedy-drama by writer-director Noah Baumbach will have a limited run in theaters beginning Nov. 14, 2025, before being added to the streaming service a couple of weeks later on Dec. 5, 2025. Plot details remain largely under wraps for Jay Kelly, with the logline merely stating, "Everybody knows Jay Kelly, but Jay Kelly doesn't know himself." Happy Gilmore star Adam Sandler could be all set for Oscar glory with his new movie. Sadly, no, it’s not Happy Gilmore 2. The beloved actor and comedian will reunite with Netflix once again for an upcoming coming-of-age comedy-drama, with a source who's seen the movie revealing that, not only will the streamer campaign hard for Sandler to be considered by the Academy, but that could even win a coveted golden statue.

Titled Jay Kelly, the movie is being helmed by Academy Award nominee and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, and could be described as a coming-of-middle-age comedy as it follows friends, played by Sandler and George Clooney, who rediscover their youthful spirit during a chaotic reunion.

Happy Gilmore was Sandler’s second major starring role following 1995’s Billy Madison.
