A group of more than 350 international actors, directors and producers have signed a letter published on the first day of Cannes condemning the killing of Fatma Hassona, the Palestinian photojournalist and protagonist of the festival-bound documentary “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” in an Israeli airstrike.
The letter, signed by names such as Mark Ruffalo, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, Melissa Barrera, Yorgos Lanthimos, Javier Bardem, Hannah Einbinder, Pedro Almodóvar, David Cronenberg, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Leigh, Alex Gibney, Viggo Mortensen, Cynthia Nixon, Tessa Ross and many more, also called out the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ for its “lack of support” for “No Other Land” co-director Hamdan Ballal.
Just three weeks after winning the Oscar for the documentary, Ballal was assaulted by settlers and kidnapped by the Israeli army. After being criticized for its silence over the incident, AMPAS eventually publicly apologized. “We are ashamed of such passivity,...

There are only three instances when Bill Skarsgård has portrayed a real antagonist in a film, but he's known for playing villainous characters. Skarsgård excels at these roles so much that people often intentionally cast him for certain roles that require him to tap into the villain side.
Best known as the actor behind the iconic Pennywise in the latest Stephen King It remake, Skarsgård has only gotten into playing villains in recent years. Before Pennywise, he played many innocent characters in films and television shows. After Pennywise, Skarsgård has taken on some very interesting roles that feature some sort of transformation. His most recent work as Nosferatu in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake also showcases another level of acting.

On August 23rd, Lionsgate released a new version of The Crow onto the big screen (you can read our 6/10 review of the film at This Link and see how we thinks it compares to other Crow movies Here) – and since it turned out to be both a critical failure and a box office bomb, we knew it wasn’t going to end up having much of a theatrical run. Now Lionsgate has announced that The Crow is already set to receive a PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release this Friday, September 13th. A press release notes that the movie will be available “to buy for $24.99 and to rent for $19.99 (for a 48-hour period) on participating digital platforms from which movies are purchased, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and more.”

A wide range of Egyptian films dominate the Arabic-language selection in Venice this year, including two feature debuts — from Khaled Mansour and Muhammed Hamdy — that represent new directions in Egyptian cinema.
Mansour is behind the endearing, audience-friendly “Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo.” It follows a taciturn security guard whose best friend is the canine of the title, played by two different, but similar-looking, highly trained dogs.
Operating at cinema’s more experimental edge is “Perfumed With Mint,” which also screens in TIFF’s Wavelength section. Veteran cinematographer Hamdy (“The Square”) creates a metaphorical film representing a generation that is contaminated with doubts about what a waits them.
Provocative drama “Happy Holidays” marks Palestinian helmer Scandar Copti’s (“Ajami”) first solo outing while “Sudan, Remember Us” is a political documentary from the French-Tunisian-Moroccan journalist and documentarian Hind Meddeb. Both films will also play in the Toronto Film Festival.

The Crow just wrapped up its second weekend in theaters and, for the most part, it feels like the remake has already been forgotten. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised seeing as it debuted at #8 during its opening weekend and has already slipped to #11.
The movie flopped during its first frame with a $4.6 million debut and made only $1.8 million this weekend to take its current domestic total to a mere $8.5 million. Overseas, it's performed no better and sits at just $13.2 million at the worldwide box office.
With a $50 million budget, this is nothing short of a disaster for Lionsgate and The Crow will likely go down as one of 2024's biggest flops.
With 22% on Rotten Tomatoes, Rupert Sanders' remake has a slightly better 65% score from audiences; however, that's done little to help its box office prospects and we'd imagine a Digital release is now imminent.

2024's The Crow is missing some key characters from the comics and past movie adaptations. The 2024 movie starring Bill Skarsgrd as Eric Draven takes plenty of liberties when it comes to adapting James O'Barr's work. The various ways that The Crow 2024 changes the comics was partially an intentional decision to help set the film apart from the original 1994 movie starring Brandon Lee. For anyone familiar with the comics or previous adaptations, taking one look at The Crow's cast and characters reveals just how different the movie really is.
While Bill Skarsgrd's Eric Draven is pulled from the comics, FKA twigs' Shelly is the only other central character in the movie who is not an original creation. This includes Danny Huston's Vincent Roeg, the film's main villain with no comic connection, and Sami Bouajila's Kronos, a reinvented version of Eric's usual spirit guide. As The Crow returns to theaters and the series is reborn after nearly two decades, audiences may wonder how the new installment compares to the previous films. Starting as a cult classic, it's remarkable to see how far The Crow series has come and the enduring legacy of its many adaptations. With each film or TV series offering a unique perspective on the classic revenge story, this guide aims to chronicle these various adaptations and perhaps even resurrect a few from the depths of obscurity.
Originally published by Caliber Comics in 1988, The Crow was the creation of James O'Barr. The comic quickly found its place as a cult classic, leading to a successful movie adaptation in 1994. The film became wildly popular, solidifying The Crow as a cultural touchstone for comic book movies. Since then, The Crow has evolved into a full-fledged phenomenon, with countless comics continuing O'Barr's work, multiple adaptations across different media,...

Lionsgate has released a new version of The Crow onto the big screen (you can read our 6/10 review of the film at This Link and see how we thinks it compares to other Crow movies Here) – and its opening weekend box office was so underwhelming, it’s probably not going to stick around in theatres for very long. Rupert Sanders' much-maligned remake of The Crow has had a terrible weekend at the box office, opening at #8 and grossing a mere $4.6 million, even less than the Coraline re-release.
It's become apparent that people didn't want a new take on the 1994 cult classic, something the director of that movie - Alex Proyas - has been saying for a while now. In a series of Facebook posts, the filmmaker had fun with The Crow's disappointing performance (it's now slipped to 19% on Rotten Tomatoes).
"Wow. Box office is a bloodbath," he commented before adding, "I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems."
As well as sharing screenshots of negative reviews, Proyas also posted a meme that stated, "Marked Safe From Seeing 'Crow' 2024 Today." While these comments are relatively tongue-in-cheek, they somewhat contradict what he said when the first trailer for The Crow...

1994's The Crow starring the late Brandon Lee is a cult classic and a movie many of its fans have long argued should be left alone and never remade.
That's not how Hollywood typically works, though, and a remake based on the 1989 comic book series by James O'Barr arrived in theaters this weekend.
The first trailer didn't receive a warm response online, with many critical of the lead's new look and the obvious differences between this movie and its predecessor. The review embargo didn't lift until The Crow was already playing in theaters and, as we write this, it sits at a dismal 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its opening weekend box office prospects, meanwhile, are also pretty, ahem, caw-ful.
Interestingly, The Crow's Audience Score (now called the "Popcornmeter") appears to tell a different story. With 66%, it suggests there may be another divide between fans and critics when it comes to...

“The Crow” has finally returned from the dead — again.
The 2024 remake of the 1994 classic, which has been in the works for more than 15 years, follows Eric (now played by Bill Skarsgård) who, along with his girlfriend Shelly (FKA Twigs), are killed by thugs. But he’s given a reprieve – he comes back from the dead and is offered the chance to get retribution against his murderers. And while this film, like the earlier movie (perhaps remembered most for the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee), is based on the James O’Barr comic book, this is a very different movie.

Lionsgate waited as long as possible before lifting The Crow's review embargo. Seeing as it sits at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that calls it "dreary and poorly paced," it's not hard to see why.
Now, though, regular moviegoers are chiming in with their thoughts and...well, they're seemingly no better.
The Crow has been awarded a B- CinemaScore, putting it on par with the likes of Dark Phoenix, Hellboy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Hulk, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Punisher: War Zone.
In some respects, it feels like the odds have been stacked against The Crow from the beginning. The response to news of a reboot was met with largely negative reactions and the trailer received a surprising amount of scorn, particularly for Bill Skarsgard's appearance as Eric.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rupert Sanders responded to some of the backlash.

Back in May, The Crow star Bill Skarsgård was quoted in an interview as saying that he would have "personally preferred something more definitive" for the movie's ending, which understandably led to speculation that Lionsgate's adaptation left the door open for a sequel.
While speaking to THR, director Rupert Sanders felt he needed to clear things up and clarify that the movie does not conclude on a "sequel bait" note.
“I’d love the audience to know that because it is important. We live in a world where people get a snippet of something and it’s magnified through a million clacking laptops, but no one really knows anything about substantiating what they are actually putting out there. The movie, I think, stands alone. I personally hate movies where you have to see the sequel. A movie should finish in a way that feels satisfactory to the story, and this movie does.

Much to the surprise of, well, no one, The Crow isn't exactly eyeing a "caw-some" weekend at the North American box office. Lionsgate did its best to keep reviews under wraps until the remake was already playing, though moviegoers are smarter than that and decided against flocking to theaters yesterday evening.
With a dismal $650,000 from previews, it was handily beaten by Blink Twice, the new thriller directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum.
As things stand, The Crow will only fly as high as $6 million - $9 million at the domestic box office this weekend. With Blink Twice aiming for $7 million to $8 million (and playing in an additional 500 theaters), Rupert Sanders' reboot of the 1992 cult classic starring Brandon Lee will be fighting for fourth place.
Yes, fourth. With a reported $50 million budget, that could be a problem.

Director Alex Proyas‘ vision of James O’Barr’s comic book, The Crow, firmly rooted itself in the pop culture pantheon, a defining film of the ’90s for its dreamy gothic style and the tragic on-set passing of its star, Brandon Lee. Proyas‘ take on The Crow was so singular and successful that it launched a film franchise and a TV series. All of which to say that with the 1994 adaptation so firmly embedded in the minds of multiple generations, director Rupert Sanders’ new adaptation faced an uphill battle from the start. Sanders does maintain his vow to give Proyas’ film a wide berth in favor of forging new ground with the material, but the filmmaker struggles to give his film much of an identity at all beyond a lucid dream aesthetic.

We’ve been talking about it for a long time, but now it’s finally out there in the world. Lionsgate has released a new version of The Crow onto the big screen. The Crow is now playing in theaters and, if the first wave of reviews is anything to go by, Rupert Sanders' remake will have the odds stacked against it at the box office this weekend.
As we write this, it sits at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes after initially debuting in the single digits. However, if you do plan on checking out The Crow over the next few days, we're sure you're eager to learn whether you'll need to stick around through the credits.
While there's been chatter about this movie being the start of a new franchise, we can confirm that, no, The Crow does not have a mid or post-credits scene. When the movie ends, that's it! You can always stick around to see the names of everyone who worked on it, of course.
In fact, The Crow has a pretty definitive ending which suggests this was approached as a standalone tale.

Lionsgate has been anxious for the latest incarnation of “The Crow” not to be branded as a remake or reboot, though in returning a dormant screen franchise to life, it does qualify as the second. It is indeed no remake, even if the script this time around takes even more liberties with the source material of J. O’Barr’s original comics than its 1994 big-screen adaptation did. That film is burned into the collective consciousness largely because Brandon Lee died in an on-set accident while making it. His career breakthrough became a memorial that would’ve been poetically morbid even without the stamp of real-life tragedy.
Comparisons driven by sentimental favoritism seldom flatter, so it’s understandable the studio hoped to banish them as far as possible. It was already going to be an uphill struggle for a long-aborning project that cycled through numerous directors, writers and stars over the...

The debut Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed for The Crow, the latest adaptation of the original comic book by James O'Barr. Featuring Bill Skarsgard and FKA twigs in the lead roles, the new adaptation was directed by Rupert Sanders.
Shortly after the embargo lift for The Crow, the film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a very low score of 6%. This number is likely to fluctuate a bit as more reviews continue to be submitted in the coming days, but with a rough debut score that's very close to rock bottom, it doesn't seem likely to climb much higher. The current score is a far cry from the one garnered by the original 1994 adaptation, which has an 86% approval rating along with a 90% audience score. An audience score hasn't yet been determined for the new version of The Crow, and there's a chance that it could be given a much higher number in comparison,...

When I watch any film, I expect a certain degree of clarity. Events and emotions should flow logically from scene to scene, communicating to me a basic story or psychological journey. The logic needn't be straightforward, simple, or even realistic — complex and abstract dream logic is acceptable — but I should be able, as a viewer, to follow one scene to the next, understanding the way space and time work.
Rupert Sanders' new rendition of "The Crow," based on the tragic 1989 comic book by James O'Barr, lacks that vital clarity. Thanks to sloppy editing and a general lack of basic storytelling acumen, events speed past without much explanation, emotional resonance, or, in some scenes, basic communication. Despite being trapped in production hell for over a decade (and the elongated saga of this film's making has been covered ad nauseum for years), "The Crow" feels like a rush job, an idea that...

Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow owes its enduring cult bona fides partly to high-style visuals rooted in peak-era MTV, a churning alt-metal soundtrack and way cool goth-chic fashion sense. But the larger factor behind the sleek thriller’s cultural imprint was the tragic accident during filming that took the life of promising star Brandon Lee at 28, echoing the death at a similarly young age of his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Director Rupert Sanders attempts to slip out from under the original’s shadow by avoiding the word “remake” and calling this a modern reimagining of the source material. That doesn’t make it any less turgid.
Drowning in brooding atmosphere, rain-slicked nightscapes and goopy eyeliner, and tossing in some retro flavor with tracks by Joy Division, Gary Numan and others, the new iteration of The Crow is more focused on aesthetics than storytelling. So it makes sense that...

There’s a haunting simplicity to James O’Barr’s comic book “The Crow.” The story claims that sometimes — only sometimes — people die under such sad circumstances that their soul can’t rest, so they’re guided back to the land of the living by a crow, in order “to put the wrong things right.” It’s a tale of grief, mostly stuck in the “anger” phase, in which a beautiful walking corpse metes out violent vengeance against the unapologetically evil.
Alex Proyas’ feature film adaptation of “The Crow” was itself the source of overwhelming tragedy when its star, Brandon Lee — the son of martial arts icon Bruce Lee — died in an accident on set. This context can make Proyas’ film hard to watch: Lee’s complicated portrayal of a sad soul coming to terms with pain and mortality hits extremely close to home. But his performance also makes the film incredibly powerful.

To its credit, Rupert Sanders’s The Crow isn’t a mere rehash of Alex Proyas’s 1994 film. The central conflict is the same—a musician and his fiancée are murdered and the former is given the chance to return from the dead to avenge their death—but it expands on both the couple’s love story and the lore behind Eric’s (Bill Skarsgård) connection to the netherworld where the supernatural crows dwell. Unfortunately, in doing so, the remake gets bogged down by a superfluous, hackneyed backstory and narrative threads that are conspicuous for their lack of emotional gravitas, causing the film to feel like a wheel-spinning exercise.
For all its corniness, the original film cut right to the chase by opening with Eric and Shelly’s murder and allowing Eric’s bloody quest for vengeance to commence within a handful of scenes. Proyas understood the importance of narrative efficiency,...

Bill Skarsgård is an inked-up, goth angel of death in Rupert Sanders’ dreary new spin on “The Crow,” here an adaptation of James O’Barr’s supernatural graphic novel series rather than a retread of Alex Proyas’ controversial 1994 cult favorite.
Written by Zach Baylin and William Schneider, this version of “The Crow” wisely banned real guns from the set, even though it’s filled with plenty of stylized ballistic killings and led by an undead Eric Draven avenging the brutal death of his girlfriend. Despite moody, doomy set design and Skarsgård’s ominous silhouette as a very tall and beautiful walking corpse, Sanders’ “The Crow” is less giving with plot, hampered by an unfleshed and often confusing mythology that leaves the unsettling particulars of O’Barr’s source material for dead.
Setting up Eric as a traumatized Freudian headcase haunted by a hardscrabble childhood somewhere in Michigan, “The Crow” opens gruesomely...

Lionsgate will be bringing a new version of The Crow to theatres tomorrow, August 23rd – and while we had previously been referring to this project as a remake, Lionsgate recently let it be known that this is not to be called a remake, but rather a new adaptation of the source material, the comic book series created by James O’Barr. That means it still focuses on a doomed relationship between characters named Eric and Shelly, played here by Bill Skarsgard (Boy Kills World) and singer FKA Twigs – and during an interview with Seasoned Bf, Twigs revealed that working on the film was therapeutic for her, allowing her to embrace her inner darkness again.
"I think people can think darkness is a bad thing but I don't see it like that. It's like a well, it's like a beautiful deep pool, it's a depth of character" – FKA Twigs shares how her...

Though opinions will obviously vary based on musical taste, the soundtrack for Alex Proyas' original adaptation of The Crow is widely regarded as one of the best of all time, topping the Billboard 200 and eventually going platinum.
Now, AVClub.com has unveiled the official track list for Lionsgate's remake, and it's... actually pretty good!
The music used for the trailer did not inspire confidence, but this soundtrack includes a few certified bangers which perfectly encapsulate the goth/industrial aesthetic associated with the '90s film. Whether this movie manages to live up to that standard remains to be seen!
Here’s the complete track list for The Crow soundtrack:
“Des Pas Sur La Neige” - Debussy
“Disorder” – Joy Division
“Fall” – The Bug Ft. Inga Copeland
“Thin Flesh” – Traitrs
“The Killer” – Landr
“M.E.” – Gary Numan
“Total Depravity” – The Veils

"We're Not Remaking That Movie": Bill Skarsgard Distances His Version Of The Crow From Brandon Lee's

Bill Skarsgrd emphasizes that 2024's The Crow is not a remake of the 1994 classic. Skarsgrd takes over the role of Eric, originally portrayed by Brandon Lee. The film's team is working hard to ensure the new version of The Crow is distinct and respects the legacy of Brandon Lee's iconic performance.
2024's The Crow star Bill Skarsgrd distinguishes his film from the 1994 version of the film. The original movie The Crow starred Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a revived man who seeks revenge on the people who killed him and the love of his life. Thirty years after The Crow's release, Rupert Sanders has made a reimagining of the story that features Skarsgrd as Eric in a new version of the classic '90s film. In addition to Skarsgrd, The Crow stars FKA twigs, Danny Huston, Josette Simon, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger.

In a world of reboots, The Crow is something we didn’t initially think we needed. Then we found out that Bill Skarsgård was taking on the leading role.
The movie is currently out in theaters, and that is the place to turn to watch it. However, there is some bad news when it comes to streaming afterward. This is not a movie that will head to Netflix, but we do know the likely streaming home.
The Crow follows the story of Eric Draven and Shelly Webster, two soulmates who are brutally murdered when their demons from their pasts catch up with them. Eric is given a chance at setting things right, but it will mean a sacrifice. He can see revenge against the killers and sacrifice himself to bring Shelly back from the dead.

Actor Bill Skarsgård (It) will unleash “outlandish, brutal, and bloody” violence this week with the release of Lionsgate’s The Crow in theaters, a new take on the iconic tale. Ahead of the film’s release, we’ve got an exclusive image highlighting the bloodshed in store.

After years (and years) of waiting, "The Crow" remake is finally heading our way next weekend. Hailing from Lionsgate and director Rupert Sanders ("Snow White and the Huntsman"), this one will help close out the summer movie season with an R-rated bang. The question is, will this be a loud bang or a rather muted bang? Unfortunately for all involved, it's almost certainly going to be closer to the latter. This crow is not going to fly very high, it seems.
The long-awaited reimagining of James O'Barr's graphic novel is looking at an opening weekend in the $7.5 to $11 million range, per Box Office Theory. That's not great for a movie with a production budget in the $50 million range. Granted, that's cheap for an R-rated comic book movie. Nevertheless, it's going to have a long way to go to get anywhere near profitability, even on the high end of those estimates.

Lionsgate's remake/reboot/reimagining (whatever) of The Crow takes flight next week, and the studio has now released a second extended clip from the movie.
It's probably fair to note that there isn't exactly a lot of anticipation for this one, but one thing the movie does have going for it is plenty of bloody, gnarly, and pretty damn extreme violence.
In this sequence, we see Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) stalking his prey through an opera house during a performance, while heavily-armed enemies come at him from all angles. The unstoppable avenger cuts a bloody path through his foes, dispatching one unfortunate goon with a vicious neck stomp on the stairs.
Check out the clip below, along with a new featurette and a pair of posters.

The Crow brings the franchise back to theaters on August 23. While you wait, Lionsgate has released a brand new clip this week wherein Eric Draven massacres his way through an opera house. Be sure to watch until the end for one of the nastiest kill scenes we’ve seen all year.
The new movie is rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity, and drug use.”
From director Rupert Sanders, Skarsgård leads the cast of The Crow, with FKA Twigs co-starring in the reboot. Danny Huston (30 Days of Night) also stars, alongside Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), and Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).

Lionsgate debuted the first full scene from its upcoming remake/reboot/reimagining of The Crow last night during San Diego Comic-Con, and it gives us a better idea of what to expect from the movie's action sequences.
In the extended clip, we see the recently-resurrected Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) seeking vengeance on the criminals who murdered him and his lover Shelly Webster (FKA twigs). Draven manages to get into the car his enemies are driving and take a few of them out, but is ultimately overpowered and thrown from the vehicle, before being run-over on the freeway.
In a pretty cool little gross-out moment, we then see Draven popping the compound fracture on his leg back into place (this take on the character clearly feels pain) before continuing the pursuit.
The first trailer didn't go over very well with fans, but what do you make of this clip? Check it...

Lionsgate will be bringing a new version of The Crow to theatres on August 23rd – and while we had previously been referring to this project as a remake, Lionsgate recently let it be known that this is not to be called a remake, but rather a new adaptation of the source material, the comic book series created by James O’Barr. With the release date right around the corner, a clip from the film has arrived online to give us a preview of a brutal action scene, and that can be viewed in the embed above. A new poster has also been unveiled and can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directed this version of The Crow, working from a screenplay by Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard). The film is produced by Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell, John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman.
