This Scandi Noir Thriller Is a Gruesome Tale of Murder and the Horrors of Being an Adult
Image
Nightwatch was Danish director Ole Bornedal's feature debut film after several years of television work. It was released in 1994, paving the way for Scandinavian thrillers to become an international phenomenon. The movie also jump-started the careers of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (it was his first role), Sofie Gråbøl and Kim Bodnia, as well as Bornedal's Hollywood career when he was recruited to make a US remake of his film. As debuts go, Nightwatch was perfect — bold and original, mixing thriller, horror and dark humor equally. It also didn't shy away from violence or disturbing topics like necrophilia. However, the most intriguing and original aspect of the film was its attention to a truly terrifying topic: how scary it is to enter adult life and bear responsibilities associated with it.

When Nicolas Cage’s Wife Patricia Arquette Ate Garlic Before Kissing Ewan McGregor Onscreen Because Of This Pact With Husband
Image
Why Did Nicolas Cage’s Wife Patricia Arquette Eat Garlic Before Kissing Ewan McGregor Onscreen? (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

Nicolas Cage and Patricia Arquette were a power couple in the late ‘90s when both were reaching the heights of their careers. But in their golden era, a movie rarely lacked intimate scenes, making the presence of a smooching partner a given.

Cage and Arquette were no exception either. Like Hollywood relationships, they inevitably faced the awkwardness of filming intimate scenes with co-stars. However, they had a unique method to ensure professional boundaries remained intact — garlic.

While promoting the second season of the hit show Severance with Adam Scott, Arquette disclosed her peculiar agreement in a First We Feast video. The Boyhood actress recalled adhering to the pact when filming a kissing scene with Ewan McGregor in the 1997 thriller Nightwatch. “I’m so sorry, but I told my husband [Cage] I was going...

‘Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Fanny Leander Bornedal, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Vibeke Hastrup, Kim Bodnia | Written and Directed by Ole Bornedal

Thirty years after the original Nightwatch and twenty-seven years after the American remake, writer/director Ole Bornedal returns, rather literally, to the scene of the crime with Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, a standalone sequel to the original Danish film.

Martin survived the events of the first film and the suicide of his wife Kalinka. It’s taken its toll though, he’s dependent on prescription drugs to get through the day, and he’s even less likeable than he was back then. He also has a daughter, Emma, played by the director’s daughter Fanny Leander Bornedal who is in med school.

Early in the film, needing money, she takes her father’s old job, night watchman, or ward clerk as it’s called now, at the morgue. As...

Video Interview: Writer/Director Ole Bornedal Discusses Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever
Image
Thirty years after introducing viewers to a sadistic serial killer in the Danish horror film Nightwatch (aka Nattevagten), writer/director Ole Bornedal has returned to the world of his harrowing film with the sequel Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever. Easily one of my favorite films of the year thus far, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever is a relentlessly tense examination of the damaging effects of unresolved trauma on families, the painful healing of the grieving process, and how the past can literally come back to haunt you... with something sharp in its hands.

Featuring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, and Ulf Pilgaard reprising their roles from the original Nightwatch alongside a talented roster of actors who are new to this franchise, Demons Are Forever is now streaming on Shudder, and Daily Dead caught up with writer/director Ole Bornedal to discuss continuing the story of Nightwatch 30 years later, exploring the aftereffects of violent trauma through his film's characters,...

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever Review - An Unnecessary Sequel
Image
30 years ago, in 1994, one of the most underrated horror films was released. Director Ole Bornedal's Danish fear-fest, Nightwatch, was instrumental in launching the career of its young lead, the then 24-year-old Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who would later go on to star in a little show called Game of Thrones. His co-star, Kim Bodnia, hasn't done so bad either, coming off of the hit series Killing Eve. Nightwatch got enough attention that it led to a 1997 Americanized reboot, made by Bordenal as well, and starring Ewan McGregor, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin, and Patricia Arquette. Talk about star-studded! The reboot couldn't capture the imaginable of the original, but three decades later, Bordenal is back with Coster-Waldau, Bodina, and others for a true sequel to his Danish masterpiece. Sadly, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever is another example of a sequel that exists just to reminisce on what came before without doing much new until it's nearly too late.

‘Nightwatch’ 1994 Movie Recap & Ending Explained: Things To Know Before ‘Demons Are Forever’
Image
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the Game of Thrones superstar, didn’t start his career casually, huh? Ole Bornedal’s psychological thriller Nightwatch just got a sequel, and what better time to revisit the 1994 classic? The plot of Nightwatch is seamless, and the thrill it has managed to retain even after all these years since its release is something else. Better not lurk around in the morgue if you want to have a good career in academics, I guess.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the movie?

Martin, a law student in Copenhagen, gets a job in a creepy mortuary (all of them are creepy; don’t fight me on this). His life isn’t that bad, as his girlfriend Kalinka and he have a pretty healthy relationship going on. Martin gets a tour of the morgue and starts the job, thinking he wouldn’t have much to do except sit the night away.

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever Review: An Eerie Danish Sequel's Powerful Exploration Of Trauma
Image
Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever explores intergenerational trauma in a powerful and nuanced way. The film slowly reveals past characters with a creepy and unnerving atmosphere. Though lacking in humor, the sequel effectively adds to the themes of the original while remaining a worthy successor.

As a sequel made 30 years later, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever captures the spirit of the original Danish film as it powerfully explores how trauma can be passed through generations. With the focus shifting to Martins daughter as she drudges up past horrors in a quest to find out the truth of her familys history, writer and director Ole Bornedal has crafted a tense and unnerving horror thriller that pays homage to the past while modernizing the story for a new audience. With unnerving tension, this slow-burning horror gradually unveils its alarming context.

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever Review
Image
Plot: Thirty years after the events of the 1994 serial killer thriller Nightwatch, the daughter of two of the deeply damaged surviving characters takes her dad’s old job as night watchman at the Department of Forensic Medicine. Investigating the events that ruined her parents’ lives, she accidentally kicks off a new killing spree.

Review: Back in 1994, Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal brought the world a serial killer thriller called Nightwatch, about a young law student named Martin (played by future Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who takes a job as night watchman at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen and inadvertently gets mixed up in the investigation of the serial killer case that has been providing the morgue with a lot of fresh corpses. By the end of the film, Martin, his girlfriend Kalinka, and his best friend Jens have all had close calls with the killer, who is...

Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever review – Danish morgue sequel returns from the dead
Ole Bornedal
Ole Bornedal follows up his 90s suspense thriller Nightwatch and goes back to the same creepy building

Thirty years ago, just before the Dogme 95 movement raised the profile of Danish film-making, Ole Bornedal’s suspense thriller Nightwatch was what success for the country’s cinema looked like. Basically a modest but moderately clever genre exercise, it starred a young chiselled-cheeked Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, later cast as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, as a student called Martin who gets a job as a nightwatchman at a municipal building that contains a morgue. Partly because of a dare by his reckless buddy Jens, Martin ends up becoming a suspect in that most 1990s of cinematic plot devices, a string of murders of sex workers by a serial killer. The last act is all Wtf-twists, blue-hued lighting and stabby strings on the soundtrack, but the cast, which also includes the always-great Sofie Grabol as Martin’s girlfriend Kalinka,...

Danish Mystery Sequel 'Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever' New Trailer
Image
"Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask.

Nordic Box Office 2023: Slow Gains, With ‘Barbie’ and Top-Solid Norwegian, Icelandic Market Shares
Image
2023 was a year of sustained gains year-on-year across the Nordics, although moviegoing is still down 23%-30% from pre-covid times. The summer was exceptional thanks to the “Barbenheimer” mania that boosted all five Nordic countries. Iceland was the only territory where “Oppenheimer” ranked third, after the local comedy “Wild Game” one of three Icelandic titles that enabled local fare to jump 123% in box office for a 14% market share.

Norway enjoyed a solid year and a 27% market share for domestic fare, led by three blockbusters based on popular IPs, including the top seller “Christmas at Cobble Street.”

In Finland, the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon was perhaps the strongest among the Nordic nations, making July the biggest ever in Finnish cinema history. Also notable was the success of Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” the fourth biggest hit of the year, which helped local titles secure a 23.4% share.

Less glorious were results in Denmark where overall...

For its first full-scale outing post-covid and first year under the helm of industry chief Josef Kullengård, the Nordic Film Market is set to draw a record 500 delegates on-site, on top of nearly 60 on-line visitors. “The interest from the international industry is amazing! It will be a record year for us, even compared to pre-pandemic times,” boasts. Kullengård, a habitué of the event’s backstage gigs who took over from Cia Edström in October to allow her to focus on...

Lars von Trier’s Longtime Editor Molly Malene Stensgaard Says Goodbye to ‘The Kingdom’
Image
Danish editor Molly Malene Stensgaard, best known for her decades-long collaboration with Lars von Trier, won’t be returning for the third season of his cult series “The Kingdom,” she confirmed at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, where she also joined the Crystal Globe jury.

“It will be strange,” she admitted. Ghita Norby, Soren Pilmark and Peter Mygind will reprise their original roles.

“I did [‘The Kingdom’] less than a year after graduating from film school, where I learnt all sorts of rules. The first thing I heard from Lars was: ‘Forget them.’ It felt odd to stop this work relationship after almost 25 years. But it also felt right.”

After “The Kingdom,” which premiered in 1994 – with Jacob Thuesen and Pernille Bech Christensen also on editing duties – they went on to work on, among other films, “The Idiots,” “Dancer in the Dark” and “Melancholia,” with 2018 “The House That Jack Built” marking their final collaboration,...

Power of ‘Dog’: Early PVOD Release of Channing Tatum Hit Scores Big
Image
After three weekends in theaters, an unexpectedly early release of “Dog” (United Artists/$19.99) received a strong initial response with three #1 slots on charts ranked by revenue (Vudu) and by total transactions (iTunes and Google).

The Channing Tatum-co-directed and -starring film is #4 in theaters this weekend, down only 13 percent and approaching $50 million. That made it seem like a prime candidate for extended exclusive play and its studio has not been particularly aggressive on early PVOD. “No Time to Die” did appear after 30 days, but since then both “House of Gucci” and “Licorice Pizza” had two month windows before going to home platforms. It is one of two new PVOD releases from UA: “Cyrano” ($19.99) came out after only its second weekend.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) debuts on Tuesday, a week ahead of the previously announced release date. It is certain to displace “Dog” and dominate the charts, as it did in theaters.

Image
Nordic production powerhouse Miso Film, which looks to make a splash at the Berlinale Series with its daring HBO Max show “Lust,” is developing high-end international dramas with Scandinavian creatives such as Pilou Asbæk (“Borgen”), Ole Bornedal (“Nightwatch”) and Fenar Ahmad (“Darkland”). The company is part of Fremantle.

Ahead of the Berlinale, Miso founders Peter Bose and Jonas Allen discussed with Variety their ambition to find new voices and original ways to tell stories.

The banner, which just started shooting the third season of “Those Who Kill” and is about to begin filming Season 3 of “Face to Face” with Lars Mikkelsen, recently shot Norwegian sci-fi comedy “Blasted,” for Netflix. “Streamers have opened up new possibilities for genre,” said Allen.

“‘Blasted’ is now in post and is a mix of science fiction and comedy with a lot of CGI,” added Allen. He and Bose said working with streaming series has also...

Nordic Box Office in 2021: ‘No Time to Die” Keeps Screens Alive
Image
2021 was another annus horribilis for cinemagoing in the Nordics, due to on-going and strict Covid restrictions that halved admissions compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Released late September/early October when cinemas for once ran at full capacity, “No Time to Die” literally saved the film year, and even ranked No. 1 among all James Bond movies ever released in Denmark.

Aside from Sweden, strong homegrown offers such as “Checkered Ninja 2” in Denmark, “Class Reunion 3” in Finland, “Cop Secret” in Iceland, “Three Wishes for Cinderella” in Norway enabled the Nordic nations to secure bullish market shares.

Denmark

In 2021, “No Time to Die” smashed all B.O. records for a James Bond movie in Denmark. That, however, didn’t prevent overall ticket sales from plummeting 45% from 2019, due to the pandemic.

The Danish film year opened and ended with closed cinemas, and faced a record 138 days of full cinema lockdown, according to the cinema association Danske biografer.

Fremantle, at Venice With Pics by Paolo Sorrentino and D’Innocenzo Brothers, Ramps Up Film Side
Image
Fremantle, which is at Venice with two films in competition –– Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Hand of God” and “America Latina” by Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo –– is ramping up its film side.

The Rtl Group-owned company “that everyone used to associate with [TV franchise] ‘Got Talent’ is becoming one of the biggest independent film production studios in Europe” says its COO Andrea Scrosati.

It’s rising power in feature films isn’t being noticed because of Fremantle’s model of owning a panoply of indie companies, many of which are in Europe, including two in Italy, 12 in the Nordics, German studio UFA and Fiction Valley in the Netherlands.

But “nobody is connecting the dots,” Scrosati says.

Fremantle, besides having some 60 TV series in the works, in 2021 produced 14 movies. Most of these are being made through its Italian labels The Apartment and Wildside; others are via several other European outfits that Fremantle...

Film Review: Ezra (2017) by Jay K.
Image
Based on the 2012 American genre film “The Possession” from Ole Bornedal, director Jay K. attempts a Malayalam-centered effort on the same premise for this supernatural spookfest. Focusing heavily on the Jewish culture of Kerala where it was filmed, the overall effect is a slight downgrade from the American original but is still quite enjoyable and features a few merits of its own.

After moving into a new city due to work, Ranjan Mathew (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and his wife Priya Raghuram (Priya Anand) try to adjust to the differences in culture but are unable to do so. When she decides to go shopping one day in order to help acclimate herself to the city, she takes an interest in a special box from an antique store and brings it home, only to immediately find themselves inundated with a series of paranormal encounters. Ranjan’s uncle Father Samuel (Vijayaraghavan...
