- U.S congressional representative from Louisiana (1941-1943, 1947-1973).
- Father of Cokie Roberts, Barbara Boggs-Sigmund and Tommy Boggs (Thomas Hale Boggs Jr.).
- In October 1972, he was on a flight from Anchorage, Alaska to Juneau, when the plane disappeared. In November he was reelected to another term as a U.S. Congressional representative from Louisiana. His body, as well as others on the plane, was never found. A Congressional resolution passed on 3 January 1973 declared his seat vacant, and a special election was held to fill the vacancy.
