Veteran Japanese character actor Tadanobu Asano is having a very overdue breakthrough moment. The chameleonic film star has been a mainstay of Japanese cinema for nearly three decades, while also regularly appearing in prominent supporting parts in big Hollywood productions. But his irresistible performance in FX’s period series Shōgun is giving him an all-new level of global recognition.
Asano co-stars in Shōgun as Kashigi Yabushige, the scheming lord of Izu, a rugged region of feudal Japan where much of the series takes place. Playing the character with lived-in swagger and a fatalistic sense of humor, Asano has become one of the show’s clear fan favorites, with Reddit and Twitter threads popping up to revel in his character’s antics. Asano announced himself early in Shōgun‘s run: As many have marveled, Yabushige makes his entrance to the show by boiling a man alive but then wins the audience...

Chris Tucker, Adrien Brody and Paul Haggis were on hand Saturday to give a huge high-tech finale to the fifth edition of the Jackie Chan Action Film Week. So too were Crystal Liu Yifei, star of Disney’s upcoming “Mulan,” and a bevy of top Chinese talent.
Moving the event from the fringes of the Shanghai festival in June, to a new date and spectacular outdoor venues provided by provincial town of Datong, some 200 miles East of Beijing in Shanxi Province, may have revitalized the Action Film Week. Upbeat organizers now talk of franchising the event to other countries.
If the opening on July 21 was reportedly relatively quiet, the closing ceremony was a razzamatazz of stunts, choreography and pyrotechnics with ambitions of matching an Olympic Games or World Cup opening.

When one thinks of Mongolian cinema, one name immediately springs to mind: Batdorjin Baasanjav, best known for his portrayal of Genghis Khan in the 2004 Chinese-Mongolian TV drama of the same name, as Khan’s father Yesugei Baghatur in Sergei Bodrov’s 2007 biopic ‘Mongol’, and as Guan Yu in John Woo’s Three Kingdom’s era epic from 2008 ‘Red Cliff’. A descendent of Khan himself through his second son Chagatai, the word legendary seems all-too befitting for his very embodiment of his roles, delivering a wholly believable yet captivating performance time and time again. On paper then, it would seem to be the perfect casting choice for Tsahir, leader of one of Khan’s ten-men military units (or aravt) in Jolbayar and Shagdarsuren’s wonderfully shot film retelling this particular legend. Baasanjav aside, does ‘Legend of the Ten’ hold up in the emergence of Mongolian film-making? Short answer: yes, it does.

Julianne Moore isn’t just the Mvp when the cameras are rolling. Alicia Vikander reveals in her new Vogue cover story that Moore came to her defense after a man made a crude joke towards Vikander on the set of the 2014 fantasy film “Seventh Son.” The Sergei Bodrov-directed movie featured both Moore and Vikander in supporting roles. After a man said something inappropriate to Vikander, Moore jumped in and yelled at him.
“I was really embarrassed, and I would have just laughed it off,” Vikander says. “But Julianne turned to him and said, ‘If you ever do that again, I’m walking out of here and I’m not coming back.’ She was just, like, ‘Don’t you f—ing say that again.’ It showed me that she had the power. And that meant so much to me.”

What begins as a fascinating look at the collectivization of formerly privately owned cattle in a small mountain village in Kazakhstan ends as an epic journey of a boy into manhood and even old age before he finds his way back to his mother.
The Road to Mother is set during one of the most tragic periods in the history of the former Ussr Republic of Kazakhstan. Director Akan Satayev tells a story of the power of a mother’s love which endures challenges of the turbulent times. The storyline covers a timespan from the 1930s to the present day with key elements of collectivization, war and postwar years for the Kazakh people.
The director was inspired by what his parents told him when he was a child.

Early last week, white British actor Ed Skrein joined the cast of Neil Marshall’s upcoming “Hellboy” reboot, a casting choice that was immediately derided for its whitewashing of Skrein’s character, a Japanese-American Marine named Ben Daimio (whose family tree includes no less than a famous Japanese spy and war criminal, who also appears in the John Arcudi and Mike Mignola comic book series). In short order, Skrein did something wholly remarkable: he dropped out of the project after learning about Daimio’s heritage.

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we’re well on our way to seeing how the best foreign language film race will shape up at the Oscars in 2017. Leading the pack of the shortlist is The Salesman from Iran, which could land filmmaker Asghar Farhadi a rare second win in the category. How often do we see someone with more than one win in this worldwide competition?
The shortlist of nine films — more about those here — will, on January 24, be trimmed down to the official five nominees that will eventually face off at the Oscars on February 26. This site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, lists the current frontrunners as: Germany’s Toni Erdmann (written and directed by Maren Ade), Denmark’s Land of Mine (written and directed by Martin Zandvliet), Sweden’s A...

In The Overlook, A.V. Club film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky examines the misfits, underappreciated gems, and underseen classics of film history.
Brother, the little $50,000 Russian hit man movie that could, is a true piece of junk art, equal parts crude and sophisticated, a faux-naïve crime myth with a protagonist as indelible as Travis Bickle. It made a lot of money in 1997, turning writer-director Aleksei Balabanov into one of the country’s most famous filmmakers and cementing the stardom of the charismatic and gifted Sergei Bodrov Jr., who would be killed in an avalanche five years later at the height of his fame. It was imitated, it was parodied, and it spawned one of the most deranged sequels in all of filmdom, Brother 2.

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

Distributed by Warner Bros, Focus has so far grossed a total of $2,651,224, according to a report released by Rentrak.

After five Academy Award nominations and a career's worth of bold, varied performances, Julianne Moore is finally an Oscar winner. The "Still Alice" star was tipped to win the Best Actress prize at the 87th Academy Awards as early as the film's debut at the Toronto Film Festival, where it was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics and set on the fast track for a fall release amplified by an awards campaign. So it was little shock to those in the audience at the Dolby Theater or those watching at home when Matthew McConaughey announced her name. "There is no such thing as Best Actress, as is evidenced by the performances of my fellow nominees," the 54-year-old legend said. "I have been honored to be with you every step of the way." Interesting factoid: Only nine times in the 87-year history of the Academy Awards has a woman over 50 won the Best Actress Oscar.

★★☆☆☆ Fantasy epic Seventh Son (2014) had potential to be a somewhat unique film in a genre abundant with echoing plot arcs and medieval-like worlds, but the amalgamation of different cinematic influences director Sergey Bodrov used to illustrate his story is overwhelmingly distracting. Exhaustingly exuberant acting from almost the entire cast, poorly written dialogue, and cheesy comical CGI effects all add to the feeling of seemingly never ending torture the film subjects its audience to. Although the film tries to follow the young adult heartthrob hero Tom Ward (Ben Barnes, perhaps best known for his role as Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia), it's hard to pull away from Jeff Bridges fantastic Master Gregory.

Who doesn't adore Julianne Moore?
Especially in Still Alice, the film for which bookmakers are betting she'll take home the Best Actress Oscar, Moore's portrayal of a linguistics professor battling early onset Alzheimer's is letter perfect. Myself having a sibling now encased in a memory care facility in Florida after being ravaged by the same affliction, every step of Alice's deterioration is recognizable: the random loss of memories, the awareness she's losing her identity, the outbursts of anger, the inability to control bodily functions, and the short-lived moments when the person you have always loved reemerges out of a fog of despair.
Sadly, Moore's performance and that of her peers in Seventh Son capture a forgetfulness, too, although not one symptomatic of an infirmity, but one characteristic of creative bankruptcy. By the time this adaptation of Joseph Delaney's bestselling young-adult classic, The Spook's Apprentice, ends and you've emptied your bladder in your mall's stall,...

Chicago – I can’t decide which is worse: the “fake deep talk” from Jeff Bridges in “Seventh Son” or the “angry whisper talk” from Eddie Redmayne in “Jupiter Ascending,” which also opened on Friday. Both speech impediments are ugly fish out of water, both films are getting punished by critics and both are underperforming at domestic box offices.
Ironically, both movies have also also been quite delayed and now we see why. “Jupiter Ascending” opened two days ago after initially being slated to open in July 2014. That film’s push back was justified to finish its extensive special effects, which “The Matrix” creators did without remembering to fix its laughable acting and weak story.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Also knowing it was in trouble, “Seventh Son” was originally supposed to open way back in Feb. 2013, but the film was pushed back once and then a second time to Feb. 2015. It even changed distribution...

Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures released their new action/fantasy film, "Seventh Son" into theaters this weekend, and all the top, major movie critics have turned in their reviews. And it turns out that it didn't quit hit the mark with most of them as it only was able to muster up an overall 30 score out of a possible 100 across 25 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Julianne Moore, Olivia Williams, Djimon Hounsou, Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Antje Traue, Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington. We've supplied blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. Glenn Kenny from RogerEbert.com, gave it a 63 score, stating: "Surprise! One doesn’t want to damn the movie with faint praise by saying “it’s not that bad,” but that’s kind of the most objectively accurate description of it, in all honesty." Thomas Lee from the San Francisco Chronicle, gave it a 50 score,...

Sometimes, you know with one shot, one line, one choice. With "Seventh Son," it happened for me the moment Jeff Bridges opened his mouth. He's made a choice here that takes him further down that Rooster Cogburny RIPDy road with that gravel voice mush mouth thing, and it's genuinely ill-advised. It is embarrassing. It's like someone's grandfather wandered onto the set, and no one has the heart to tell him he's not in the movie. He is Grandalf. And it does not work. Now, if everything else about "Seventh Son" was exemplary, there's a chance it wouldn't matter, or there's a chance it might make the Bridges performance somehow work better in context. But this is tone-deaf train crash from start to finish, cast poorly, shot in a way that might as well include title cards reading "Meanwhile, On A Soundstage" at the start of some scenes, and packed with...

Jeff Bridges, psychic medium. Ask the Oscar-winning actor a relatively straightforward question and you can expect an answer ten times more interesting and in-depth than you expected. On approaching his character, the gruff Master John Gregory, in Ya fantasy adaptation "Seventh Son": "You know these kinda psychic guys that channel spirits and stuff? I remember Ramtha...this woman would channel this spirit named Ramtha," said Bridges, referring to controversial American mystic J.Z. Knight. "And...it has that aspect to it for me. You know, I'll just invite a spirit or a character into me [so it can] have its way with me. And I did that in this case. Once you get the costumes on, and you're in those wonderful Dante Ferretti sets and stuff, you open yourself to be inhabited by a character to have its way with you. And that's kind of what happened [on 'Seventh Son'], you know." The Sergei Bodrov...

Ben Barnes, best known for his portrayal of Prince Caspian in the Narnia franchise, is no stranger to mythical beasts and dangerous swordplay. While this might not be a useful trait for the world you or I live in, such talents are necessary when hunting medieval monsters, which made Barnes a perfect fit for Sergey Bodrov’s Seventh Son. Although the film was finished a few years ago, audiences are just now getting the opportunity to watch Barnes fight witches alongside the likes of Jeff Bridges and a loveable ogre, as they rush to stop Julianne Moore before she harnesses an impending Blood Moon for all of its evil power.
I had the chance to sit down with Ben Barnes last weekend when he was in New York City to promote Seventh Son alongside his fellow cast members, and we chatted at length about his role as Spook apprentice Tom Ward.

Following a lengthy wait, Seventh Son has finally made its way to theaters. The epic fantasy centers on a professional spook (Jeff Bridges), who takes a dashing young apprentice (Ben Barnes) under his wing as the two prepare to face the end of the world. Together they square off against Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) and her army of deadly minions.
Directed by Sergei Bodrov, Seventh Son is based on the novel The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney.
At a recent New York press conference for the film - Bridges, Moore and Barnes discussed their personal connections to their roles and how themes of fate and destiny have played out off-screen.
This film talks a lot about destiny and fate. How much has fate played a role in your lives?
Jeff Bridges: Destiny and fate? You guys wanna go first on that one?
Ben Barnes: Nobody wants to go first on that!

Seventh Son is the Chicken McNugget of movies. You know there are better options out there when it comes to your chicken-eating selections, but something about the greasy simplicity and drive thru nature of the McNugget calls to you. Before you take a bite you know what you're going to get and to hide the actual taste of the nugget you drench it in a dipping sauce. As your teeth crack the crisp (if it just came out of the frier) outer shell and squish through the processed meat inside, your mouth is covered with a viscous layer of... something, preventing the taste from leaving your mouth long after you've swallowed. In an effort to fix this you take another bite, this time dipped in even more sauce, but the result is the same. The McNugget is a mirage. It isn't chicken and no amount of sauce is going to...

Despite featuring Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, nude witches and slobbering giants, this swords’n’sorcery CGI epic is loud and mostly charmless
You’d think Julianne Moore leading a coven of witches who can transform into dragons, bears and Djimon Hounsou would be more entertaining. Moore seems to be having a good time with Seventh Son, but on the sly, as if director Sergei Bodrov is behind the camera like a schoolmaster warning her to stop flailing her arms around and “take this seriously”. It’s not a smart way to play this material.
Seventh Son is a exercise in sword and sorcery cliché based on the first of 14 Ya books in Joseph Delaney’s Wardstone Chronicles series. I doubt we’ll see follow-ups put to film, as Seventh Son has been sitting on a shelf for over a year; its first marketing materials debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2012.

Based on Joseph Delaney's The Wardstone Chronicles -- more specifically on the saga's first volume, The Spook's Apprentice -- Seventh Son tells the story of Thomas (Ben Barnes), a young farmer chosen to be the new apprentice of Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), a Spook whose job is to fight evil forces. Issues get more personal when Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) escapes from her prison and seeks revenge by destroying everything with her army of evil witches and sorcerers. As one may deduct from that plot, Sergei Bodrov's film does not have a lot to contribute to fantasy: Seventh Son appears like a mixture of Van Helsing and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to which basic generic elements were added. The universe depicted in Delaney's adaptation thus...

Just when you thought that Jeff Bridges’ on-screen accents couldn’t get any more ridiculous than his rootin-tootin’ cowboy persona in R.I.P.D, Seventh Son comes along with another cartoonish turn from the actor, this time as a medieval Ghostbuster with a mouth full of marbles. Unfortunately, the comparisons to R.I.P.D don’t stop there as far as Bridges’ latest film is concerned, as Seventh Son is another slight blockbuster blunder whose clunkiness reveals why Sergey Bodrov’s fantasy adventure sat shelved for roughly three years. Blame it on unfocused post-3D, unavoidable comparisons to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and lax character development – a dangerous trifecta that puts a damper on the unintentional comedy found in the few lines of dialogue Bridges mumbles that are just clear enough to understand.

When Jeff Bridges agreed to play a mystical warrior in the action-fantasy Seventh Son, he brought director Sergei Bodrov a quote by Russian novelist Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: "If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?" "I thought that was something we could bring to the film,"

After years of sitting around collecting dust, Sergei Bodrov’s Seventh Son is ready to take viewers on a enchanted journey filled with monsters, mayhem, and another one of Jeff Bridges’ interesting accents. Starring Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes, Bridges, and many other familiar faces, Bodrov’s film will finally be unleashing itself on the general public February 6th, a date that also brings about questions of a sequel if the box office numbers warrant another go. We all know the current landscape of Hollywood – if the numbers are there, a franchise will be born – and no one would be happier to see another Seventh Son than Barnes himself.
