Blaspheme, Queen: Verhoeven Turns to Nunsploitation in Erotic Melodrama
Occupying a dazzling intersection of exploitation and queer historical recuperation is the long-awaited Benedetta from Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven. The director’s second French film following his 2016 comeback Elle, he reunites with scribe David Birke to (liberally) adapt the 1986 historical study Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.
Marrying nearly all of Verhoeven’s favored motifs, religion and sexuality, cultural hypocrisy and bodily functions, it hits the sweet spot of sobering outrageousness which is exactly what such a portrait of this time, place and common attitudes demands.…...

Catholic protesters descended on Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the New York Film Festival premiere of Paul Verhoeven’s scandalous lesbian nun drama “Benedetta.” The movie, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to shock and acclaim, stars Virginie Efira as Benedetta Carlini, a novice nun in the 17th century who joins an Italian convent and has a lesbian love affair with another nun.
IFC Films, which opens the “Basic Instinct” and “Elle” director’s latest on December 3 stateside, confirmed to IndieWire that the protest was, indeed, not a publicity stunt. Festival attendees shared news and photos of the protest on Twitter (see below).
“They are upset about its ‘blasphemous’ portrayal of nuns and Catholicism. They’re repeatedly saying Hail Marys into megaphones,” said IndieWire’s Managing Editor Christian Blauvelt. Protesters, some of whom were seen playing drums and bagpipes, appear to be part of a group called America Needs Fatima.

Paul Verhoeven makes movies as if controversy keeps him warm at night. In 1980 he made “Spetters” (Dutch for “Babes”), which has been described as “the sexually explicit answer to ‘Grease,'” complete with depictions of sexual sadism. Verhoeven said it inspired his native Holland to create NASA — the National Anti-Spetters Association — and to cut off his funding. That led to a move to Hollywood, where he made films like “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls.” More recently he’s favored France, which allows him more freedom to pursue racy subject matter without worrying about what he calls America’s “Puritan” attitudes about sex.
Cannes debut “Benedetta” is his latest provocation, a true story about 17th-century Italian lesbian nuns who were punished for their sins by the patriarchal Catholic Church. This intense religious drama has echoes of Verhoeven’s 1985 Orion Pictures flop “Flesh and Blood,” a historical romance starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh...

Benedetta Sometimes it only takes one film to fire up a festival. That film, this year, came in the shape Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta, one of a handful that had originally been selected to screen here in 2020, and handed another slot twelve months later. It was Verhoeven’s first film since Elle (also screened in the official competition here back in 2016), and it promised a period piece cribbed from a book by Judith C. Brown: Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy. Which itself was based on the real-life story of Benedetta, a 17th century Italian nun-turned-abbess of Pescia, Tuscany, put on trial for a love affair with a fellow nun. Verhoeven has never shied away from in-your-face sexual content, so the marriage between director and story felt ripe for all kinds of excesses. But little could have ever prepared me for the wild riot Benedetta would ultimately turn into.

Ever the bad boy even into his 80s, director Paul Verhoeven stirs the pot and turns the heat up to the boiling point in Benedetta, a medieval brew of religious fervor, illicit lesbian sex in a convent, Catholic church politics and — to incidentally add a contemporaneous touch — a plague sweeping the land. Shot three summers ago in Tuscany and delayed in its Cannes Film Festival premiere by a year due to the 2020 edition’s cancellation, the film, like all the director’s work, is wild, intelligent, pulsating, provocative and vibrantly alive. Cecil B. DeMille would be outraged, while Ken Russell would be wildly jealous.
Verhoeven followers will recall that, in contrast to his ribald reputation, he came out with a scholarly book in 2008 called Jesus Of Nazareth, which was generally praised as a deeply researched and intelligent investigation in Jesus’ life and thoughts. When he decided not to pursue that as a film,...

You probably won’t be shocked to hear that Paul Verhoeven’s erotic drama about the relationship between two horny nuns in a 17th century Italian convent — a sacrilegious affair that became one of modern Western civilization’s earliest documented instances of lesbianism after a parish scrivener wrote about it in his diary with curiously exacting detail — isn’t quite the restrained sapphic romance that period films like “Carol,” “Ammonite,” and “The World to Come” have popularized in recent years. On the contrary, “Benedetta” is a movie in which the abbess of a convent gets fucked by a wooden statue of Jesus that someone has whittled into a dildo for her. The director of “Robocop,” “Showgirls,” and “Starship Troopers” has never had much use for subtlety or unspoken yearning, and his unholy adaptation of Judith C. Brown’s history book “Immodest Acts” feels closer in spirit to “The Devils” than...

Paul Verhoeven has made a career out of pushing cinematic boundaries, particularly when it comes to depicting sex or violence on screen.
In films like “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” he battled the ratings boards, while blockbusters like “Total Recall” and “Robocop” popularized R-rated action. All that changed in the aughts, as Hollywood abandoned those projects, sanded down the edges of commercial movies, and replaced ice-pick wielding serial killers with caped superheroes that appeal to a-all-four quadrants. But Verhoeven endured, turning his attention to European films such as “The Black Book” and “Elle” and earning the critical respect that often evaded him in the 1990s. He’s back in Cannes this year with “Benedetta,” the story of a lesbian affair between nuns in 17th century Italy. The film will be released in the U.S. by IFC Films.

IFC Films has struck early, nabbing North American rights to “Benedetta” ahead of the erotic thriller’s premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film has drawn interest from a number of distributors due in part to its pedigree. “Benedetta” is directed by a master of the form, Paul Verhoeven, who previously oversaw “Basic Instinct,” “Total Recall” and “Black Book.” It marks Verhoeven’s first directorial effort since his 2016 film “Elle,” which premiered in competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and earned an Oscar nomination for its star Isabelle Huppert.
According to the official description, “Benedetta” entangles sexuality, religion, and human ambition in its story of a young novitiate in 17th century Italy who begins an affair with another nun. With plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini (Virginie Efira) joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany. Orion Pictures and the makers of The Ring will take the Momo challenge.
Inform everyone you can. This is real. The Mother Bird has landed at Orion Pictures. The studio behind the recent Child's Play reboot is making a Momo movie. The premise of the Momo Challenge viral Internet hoax will be adapted by the studio, Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment and producer Taka Ichise, who brought us The Grudge and The Ring, according to Deadline.
The upcoming horror film wll be based on the work of art that inspired the Momo Challenge. Based on an internet meme that led to a brutal stabbing, this doctored frightener has truly missed its moment
A Slender Man movie might well have been a commercially viable option earlier this decade, when the spectral figure created by Eric Knudsen for somethingawful.com was one of the internet’s creepier memes. That was before the near-fatal 2014 stabbing of a 12-year-old Wisconsin girl by classmates claiming to serve the fictional creation, the objections the victim’s father raised to the then-shooting project, and the cuts designed to both appease the relatives and secure a teen-baiting rating. Sony have hustled the results out into scattered late-night slots without fanfare, perhaps understandably, as there’s not much left to distribute: if you thought the bogeyman was slender, wait till you see the film.

You know that Slender Man movie that had been in the works? Sony actually released it in theaters last weekend. Nobody would blame you if you didn't notice. The studio ended up not getting behind the project and, due to some serious behind the scenes drama, they just sort of dumped it and are moving on. What is perhaps the most interesting element to the drama leading up to its release is that the studio actually cut several major scenes and heavily edited down Slender Man before its release. Essentially, they released an incomplete movie in theaters.
This was a major "cut your losses" kind of move. Before digging into what was cut, per some anonymous insiders, let's discuss what led to this decision by Sony and Screen Gems. Initially, the script for Slender Man, written by David Birke, was much darker. The studio insisted on a PG-13 rating. That's not inherently an issue,...

The quartet of teenage female protagonists at the center of Slender Man will remind horror fans of a certain age of The Craft, another film that featured a foursome of high schoolers navigating the perils of adolescents along with some supernatural terror. Unlike that film (and just about every other film that features a group of young women) they never turn on each other, fight over boys, or ever refer to one another as bitches or sluts (even in that joking-but-not-joking way). They don't always see eye-to-eye and they occasionally butt heads, but never denigrate or demean each other-even though such behaviors are often emphasized and even encouraged in portrayals of teenage hotties. For this reason alone, Slender Man director Sylvain White and screenwriter David Birke deserve recognition and applause.

Eric "Victor Surge" Knudsen is the original creator of Slender Man, having conjured the iconic character nearly one decade ago in a Photoshop competition. For years, Surge offered glimpses of the Slender Man haunting humans with his imposingly tall, terrifyingly tentacled form in photos shared online. Now, Surge has brought the Slender Man back to the online realm. With a movie based on the urban legend slated to haunt Us theaters this Friday from Screen Gems, we've been provided with an exclusive look at two photos of the Slender Man ahead of the movie's release, giving readers a closer look at the enigmatic character's ominous presence over the years.
After a period of Slender Man sighting inactivity from Victor Surge, he just recently started posting a series of new photos and explains the reason why:
As a child, I was plagued by terrible sleep paralysis that made me feel like someone was always watching me.

A tasteless and inedibly undercooked serving of the internet’s stalest Creepypasta, “Slender Man” aspires to be for the YouTube era what “The Ring” was to the last gasps of the VHS generation. But while both films attempt to mine full-fleshed horror mythologies from spooky viral videos, luring their hapless characters into an unwinnable war of attrition with an evil force that lurks on the fringes of the visible world, there’s one fundamental difference that sets the two movies apart: “The Ring” is good, and “Slender Man” is terrible.
And while the awfulness of a mid-August studio movie can easily be taken for granted, “Slender Man” isn’t just bad, it’s also disappointing. As problematic as it was always going to be, the idea of a horror film based on the world’s most pervasive digital folklore was full of raw potential. The character of Slender Man has...

In “Slender Man,” the title demon is one of those spectral showbiz creeps from another dimension who’s coming to get you. He’s like Freddy Krueger, in that he targets teenagers and spirits them away the moment they let their defenses down. He’s like the force from “Ringu,” in that the trouble all starts when you watch an evil black-and-white digital file full of flickering imagery that looks like “Un Chien Andalou” crossed with a Tool video. He’s like Candy Man, in that he’s a historical ghost with a two-word name ending in “Man,” or Pennywise from “It,” in that he targets a close-knit group of friends, knocking them off one by one.
In this case, though, when you glimpse the character of Slender Man (Javier Botet) in the background of photographs or amateur videos, or even when you see him up close, he remains an oblique phantom: tall and spindly,...

The urban legend is officially headed for theaters as we now have a brand new trailer for Slender Man, Screen Gems and Sylvain White’s horror flick which is due to arrive next month.

It’s been in development for a long, long time and after facing numerous delays and setbacks, it’s finally ready to haunt audiences – as evidenced by this chilling new footage from the film.

The modern-day boogeyman of the internet will have to wait a bit longer to haunt theaters in 2018, as Screen Gems has changed the release date for their Slender Man movie.
According to Box Office Mojo, Slender Man is now scheduled to come out in theaters on August 24th, moving it about three months from its previous May 18th release date.
Bloody Disgusting reports that Screen Gems has also taken the Shay Mitchell-starring horror film Cadaver off its release schedule. The movie was also slated to come out this year, but we'll have to wait and see where the new horror film—which follows a cop fighting an evil force in a hospital morgue—will land next on the calendar.
Directed by Sylvain White from a screenplay by David Birke (based on the character created by Victor Surge), Slender Man stars Joey King, Julia Goldani-Telles, Jaz Sinclair, Annalise Basso, and Javier Botet as Slenderman.

Beware, for the first Slender Man trailer is here. 2017 was a banner year for horror movies in general, be it small budget flicks that did big business or massive hits like It that proved horror can hang with the biggest movies out there. 2018 has a lot of interesting horror offerings coming out as well, and Slender Man is one of them. This internet created creepypasta has been terrifying people online for years and now, he's heading to the big screen and the first trailer is online to give us a much better idea of what to expect from the movie.
Up to this point, word on the Slender Man movie has been pretty quiet, but now it looks like Screen Gems and Sony are looking to make people aware of the movie. They recently released the first simplistic, yet very creepy Slender Man poster online ahead of the trailer debut.

A new horror movie based on the Slender Man meme is coming - but it's moved back to the end of the summer.
Just a quick update here. Slender Man had been set for a UK release in May, but - in line with a delay in the Us - that's likely to change. Sony is shifting the release to August 24th 2018 in the Us, a delay of three months (reports Bloody Disgusting). We fully expect the UK date to follow suit...

The Slender Man myth is heading to cinemas later this year, with a movie based on the meme arriving this coming May. The film – Slender Man – has been directed by Sylvain White, and this project has the involvement of Victor Surge, crucially. Surge is the creator of Slender Man, and he’s co-written the script for the movie alongside David Birke.

At this point, Slender Man needs no introduction. A creepy, wire-thin figure, he’s been revered as something of an Internet legend since his inception in 2009, stalking nightmares and effectively clawing his way into popular culture thanks to a string of nerve-shredding short films, an appearance in Microsoft’s über-popular Minecraft and even two video games.
For having so much exposure in the horror scene, it’s small wonder then why it’s taken so long for a Hollywood studio to fast-track a live-action feature film, but thankfully, Screen Gems jumped at the chance in early 2016. Scribe David Birke (Elle, 13 Sins) is handling the script, with French director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard, The Losers) doling out the scares from behind the camera. And now, with production underway, the studio has debuted the chilling first poster, which can be seen below.

Some film projects just appeal to you on a personal, spiritual level. For me, this is one of those jams. Annie Clark, better known as her stage name as musician St. Vincent, is set to direct an adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray for Lionsgate. But that's just the start of the good news. Per Variety, he script will come from Elle screenwriter David Birke, who is also set to pen Screen Gems' upcoming Slender Man movie, and they'll be putting a twist on Oscar Wilde's classic Victorian novel by gender-swapping the titular lead character. …...

Musician, filmmaker, and passionate defender of the word “fuck” Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, has set her feature-film directorial debut, according to Variety. The project will be in the spirit of Clark’s directorial debut, period, a segment in the female-focused horror anthology Xx; as Variety notes with glee, it’s an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic novel The Portrait Of Dorian Gray, but with a woman in the title role. This variation on the theme has been done once before, in the 1983 made-for-tv movie The Sins Of Dorian Gray, starring Belinda Bauer as an actress whose soul is trapped on film instead of in a painting.
Clark’s attempt at ruining Victorian childhoods is still in its earliest stages, but Elle screenwriter David Birke has been hired to write the script. We were mixed on Clark’s segment in Xx, writing in our review: “’The ...
