Tonight’s Raw has the potential to be one of the most intriguing go-home shows in a long while. These days, the final shows before a WWE pay per view seem to be a little bit of a scramble, with undercard (and sometimes even main event) matches thrown together in a hurry.
This time, WWE largely seem to have their plans together. Fastlane’s main event of Reigns vs. Lesnar vs. Ambrose has already been well-established, while three further undercard matches are set in stone too. This still leaves several slots vacant – most notably a title defence for the New Day – but also gives Raw plenty of room to throw a few surprises our way.
Additionally, we also have exciting rumours of a few potential returns and Nxt call-ups, and while it would perhaps make more sense for WWE to execute these closer to WrestleMania, let’s not...

Triple H and Joey Mercury talked Vince McMahon out of firing Titus O’Neil, RingsideNews.com is reporting.
That’s why the original suspension was so high at 90 days, as it was in fact a lesser punishment than a release. The suspension has now been reduced to 60 days, as the weight of public opinion and media reaction made WWE look bad for punishing an employee for a playful grab.
What’s interesting is that Joey Mercury had been rumoured to be away from the company. There was never any conclusive reason as to why he was off work, but presumably he’s now back in his backstage role.
As for Triple H calming McMahon down, it isn’t a surprise to hear he was a voice of reason. O’Neil was simply saying to Vince “Ladies first” when he grabbed the arm. It was meant to be a playful joke,...

Extreme Championship Wrestling may have only lasted for nine years, but it left a huge mark on the wrestling landscape. Seen as a cooler, more contemporary alternative to WWE and WCW, the company gained a small, but loyal, fanbase that was so devoted that not only did they help keep the company in business, but they practically became part of the show. Seeking to capitalize on this mania, WWE and WCW adopted some of Ecw’s signature flourishes (sex and violence, primarily), ushering in the wrestling boom of the late 1990s and eventually making WWE a billion-dollar company.
It wasn’t just angles that WWE and WCW took – many future superstars spent time in Ecw until the big leagues came calling. Steve Austin, Chris Jericho, Mick Foley, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and more all spent time in Ecw, and they’ve all been quick to credit their experiences...

A new video posted by IGN has apparently revealed the (almost) full roster for WWE 2K16.
It is common knowledge now that the new game will have a bumper roster of 120 unique characters, but the list below falls a few short of that while Hulk Hogan is still a part of it. The Hulkster has been removed from the game altogether for reasons that you don’t need me to tell you about.
There are a number of shocking inclusions, including Superstars down the pecking order in Nxt and Attitude Era stars who had very little to do with cover star Stone Cold Steve Austin. While there are also a number of notable exclusions, including the Legion of Doom, who seemed to be nailed on for a place in the new title after leaked video footage appeared to show Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler and Jim Ross recording commentary...

Fans of the current World Wrestling Entertainment product have undoubtedly noticed the increased television presence of Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury, known collectively (though not-so-creatively) as J&J Security. The backup to current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, they have become the tackling dummies for any and all seeking the top prize in the industry.
Sure, that may not make them the most effective bodyguards in company history but that has not stopped The Architect or The Authority from continuing to employ them, probably because they serve as a great distraction for even the most focused of top contenders.
Wrestling history is dotted with bodyguards who have protected some of the biggest and most influential stars. They have helped them retain titles and helped them pick up victories in the most monumental of matches.
Some have even sacrificed themselves, taking tremendous punishment while allowing their charge to escape unscathed.

This Sunday’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view will be headlined by Seth Rollins defending the WWE Title against Brock Lesnar. It is Lesnar’s first chance to win the WWE Title back after losing it at WrestleMania 31 when Rollins cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase to escape with the gold.
The build for the match has been pretty good with Lesnar injuring both Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury two weeks ago while also “breaking the ankle” of Kane this past week on Raw. That means that Rollins is all alone with no backup, or at least that’s what WWE wants fans to think.
Today’s poll is a look at the three options that are in play in terms of who might leave Battleground as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Here are the choices.

Okay, so it’s time for one of those B-shows of the annual WWE calendar, Payback, a show that, on-paper, sounds okay, but isn’t offering too much in terms of fresh or exciting new feuds in my view. We’ll see how the matches go, shall we?
The opening match of Payback sees Sheamus taking on Dolph Ziggler. These two top-class workers wrestled at the Extreme Rules pay per view too, and I’ve seen them wrestle so many times over the years, yet I was happy to see it again here at Payback. The two of them have chemistry that is undeniable, and in my view, this match, along with the tag team title match that I’ll talk about shortly, stole the show. Just a great back and forth contest that saw the heel Sheamus defeat a bloody Ziggler with his brogue kick. Excellent match.

Former WWE diva and Straight Edge Society member Serena Deeb is retiring from the wrestling business at the age of 29 following her final match for Reina promotion at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan on Friday.
She posted the following message on Facebook to explain her decision:

The biggest storyline in WWE this week was Seth Rollins getting some help from his friends in The Authority. The group worked together to slow down Brock Lesnar, who rarely takes a beating like the one he suffered on Raw. It was a good way to progress things in the WWE Title feud that will lead to Rollins defending his gold against Lesnar at WWE Battleground on July 19.
That return of the united Authority group continued on Smackdown when Big Show attacked Ryback with two Chokeslams during Ryback’s match with Kane. Perhaps this will mean that Big Show is back with The Authority as well. Smackdown ended with Rollins beating Dean Ambrose again, thanks in part to the distraction of Joey Mercury and Kane. Meanwhile, poor Jamie Noble is out with three broken ribs due to Lesnar being a bit too aggressive.

This week’s Smackdown followed the story from Raw of The Authority working together again. The WWE Champion Seth Rollins dominated Brock Lesnar on Raw thanks to the help of Kane, Joey Mercury and Jamie Noble, who sided with Rollins after weeks of not supporting him due to his selfish attitude.
Noble paid a price for it on Raw because he suffered three broken ribs when Lesnar gave him a shoulder tackle into the barricade at ringside. On Smackdown, they mentioned his injury during the show opening promo and Rollins dedicated this week’s Smackdown to Noble. At one point Rollins even made an error saying “last night” when talking about visiting Noble in the hospital when it should have been “Monday night.”
There was a minor change on commentary this week since Jimmy Uso joined Tom Phillips and Jerry Lawler. Poor Jimmy has nothing to do since...

This Monday’s WWE Raw takes place in Washington, DC and will be headlined by a tag team match. It was announced on WWE.com that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins will team up with Kane to take on Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns.
The match is a continuation of the storyline that took place on Smackdown when Kane ejected Roman Reigns from the building after calling him a liability, which led to Rollins beating Ambrose with a Pedigree thanks to the help of Kane and Joey Mercury.
If this match sounds familiar it’s because it was done on the May 25th edition of Raw and the May 28th edition of Smackdown.
Reigns has been thrown off his game in recent weeks thanks to the actions of Bray Wyatt, who continues to taunt him. Wyatt has used photos of Reigns’ daughter to try to get...

This week’s Smackdown was taped in Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday night. Here are the results of the matches and key segments from the show.
Seth Rollins did a promo with Kane and Joey Mercury while dedicating his match to Jamie Noble, who is out with broken ribs. Ryback was brought out to the ring to trade insults with Rollins and he was put in a match with Kane while Rollins called out Dean Ambrose for a match later in the show.
Sheamus defeated Dolph Ziggler with a Brogue Kick. Rusev came out to try to talk to Lana, but she didn’t want anything to do with him. After the match, Summer Rae was shown backstage with Rusev and winked at him.
Alicia Fox defeated Naomi with a rollup. During the match, Tamina hit a superkick on both Bella Twins and Fox capitalized on that by pinning Naomi.

WWE Raw is all about promoting special events. Traditionally the idea was to tease fans and get them hooked to buy pay per views. Nowadays, in the Network Era, the idea is to hook fans into subscribing for the WWE Network.
Yet on the go home Raw for Money In The Bank, the main event angle was Seth Rollins losing to Joey Mercury. How on earth did that help to sell the special? All it did was make Rollins look weak and give the crowd a cheap pop moment.
Still, the quality of the Mitb main events helped to sell themselves. The under card was less lucky, suffering a miserable fate after just two weeks of tiny build.
That problem in lack of build shouldn’t be an issue for Battleground, as there are a full five weeks to the show. There’s a live Network broadcast of...

Whether it's 3Mb (R.I.P.) hitting Bourbon Street to bring the rock or Dean Ambrose taking Seth Rollins' Heavyweight Championship belt on an Instagram tour of the French Quarter, WWE loves to make New Orleans a character in its own right when descending upon the Crescent City. In fact, they may as well have entered New Orleans as a final participant in Sunday's Money in the Bank ladder match, since it's already a fairly unwieldy affair.
But then, all that would have taken away from the surprise of Kofi Kingston not winning.

WWE Champion Seth Rollins credits one of his on screen J&J Security members, Joey Mercury, for saving his career in WWE.
Rollins explained it during a Wizard World Q&A session recently in St. Louis:
“Joey Mercury saved my life. He helped lay everything out for me, where I was heading, and put me on the right path. He was like the fourth Shield member.”
The reason Rollins brought up Mercury is because he was asked about adjusting to life in WWE with Rollins saying that it took him a while to figure things out in developmental because he thought he was better than everybody else. If he kept thinking that way, he would have lost his job and it was Mercury that steered him in the right direction.

After Monday Night Raw went off the air this week, WWE Champion Seth Rollins stayed in the ring and berated the Green Bay Packers football team.
Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury started the post-Raw segment. They demanded that the Green Bay crowd pays more respect to Rollins, which of course only resulted in more boos. WrestleMania 31 has come and gone, and with the biggest week in wrestling now out of the way, we’re left with some big, burning questions. Most pressing of all: Why does Ricky Steamboat always have to wear a gi and headband when he shows up at WrestleMania? And how many times will Joey Mercury jump off the second rope and land into an Rko? It didn’t work the first five times!
Overall, though, it was a pretty exciting week in wrestling. WrestleMania was solid, Kalisto and Neville made their main roster debuts, Sheamus put some twisty things in his beard, and Impact put on another “pretty good” show, which means they’ve come a long way from their specialty of “pretty terrible” shows of the past.
With all this great stuff going on, that must mean there’s nothing to complain about right? Why not at all!

Whether you’re ready for Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar or not, WrestleMania 31 is almost here! The past year has been an interesting one for WWE’s roster. WrestleMania 30 headliner Daniel Bryan lost eight months of his career to an injury, and Reigns emerged as the heir apparent to John Cena. But if you look at every wrestler in WWE right now, you’ll see that a lot of them aren’t as valuable to the company as they were at last year’s show.
Sure, a few careers have been boosted. While some fans seem to have soured on Reigns, there’s no doubt he’s in a better position in Vince McMahon’s eyes than last year. On a smaller scale, Tyson Kidd is having the most relevant run of his career right now, Curtis Axel is getting a little something, Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury...

We continue on the Road to WrestleMania 31 here with the second Raw of February 2015. Last week we saw Daniel Bryan beat Seth Rollins in order to gain a shot at Roman Reigns at WWE Fast Lane, with the winner of that match going to WrestleMania to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. So, plenty to be curious about here, let’s get on with it.
The show opens with Roman Reigns heading to the ring to 80% boo’s, 20% cheers, and talks about how he won the Royal Rumble and shouldn’t have to earn his shot at Lesnar again. Reigns bumbled his lines yet again here, they need to keep him quiet and get him to practice more, seriously. Bryan interrupts to 80% cheers, 20% boo’s, and tells Reigns that they will be fighting at Fast Lane, and that he is the better wrestler, etc. The Authority interrupts,...

This week’s edition of Smackdown followed a Raw that had a “big announcement” that really wasn’t that big of a deal. All that Triple H announcement did on Raw was set up the main event of that show, which was a win by Daniel Bryan over Seth Rollins. That set up the Bryan match against Roman Reigns at Fast Lane on February 22nd. Going into Smackdown, they continued that story.
It was one of those episodes where they focused on those main two guys, had some decent midcard action and then a lot of short matches. They still started the show off with an interview segment with Miz hosting MizTV with Bryan and Reigns, but at least it was different than the typical Triple H promo to starts off Raw nearly every week.

Smackdown was filmed on Tuesday from Colorado Springs. The show will air on Thursday night and was primarily concerned with Daniel Bryan’s momentum towards WWE Fast Lane.
Opening the broadcast was a Miz TV segment. The guests were Bryan and Roman Reigns, but things quickly fell apart when Reigns hit the Superman Punch on The Miz. The Royal Rumble winner then challenged Bryan to a fight, but Seth Rollins turned up and interrupted the stare off. It was then announced that Bryan would be facing Rollins, Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury in Smackdown’s main event.
Ryback and Dolph Ziggler defeated Stardust and Goldust, after Stardust decided to walk out on his partner. The break up had been coming for some time.

The 2007 Royal Rumble PPV marked the 20th time that WWE held the annual January event. There was a nice sense of nostalgia about the show because of that reason.
There was a notable injury going into the show. Triple H was one of the biggest names in WWE and was rumored to win the Rumble in order to face John Cena at WrestleMania for the second year in a row. That didn’t happen because he suffered a torn quad for the second time in his career and he was out of action for the first half of 2007.
It was an interesting Rumble match because the previous few Rumble matches were about putting over some younger guys that hadn’t really been main eventers before. This time around it was about two guys in their early 40s that were already legends that decided they were going to steal the show.

Smackdown was filmed on Tuesday night from Austin, Texas. Airing on Thursday night, the show represents WWE’s final opportunity to sell Sunday’s Royal Rumble show.
Daniel Bryan opened the show and reintroduced the “fired” superstars, who had been reinstated to their jobs after John Cena defeated Seth Rollins on Raw. Erick Rowan talked first, which did not go down well with the crowd. Before Ryback or Dolph Ziggler could get a chance to address their firing, Kane turned up with Jamie Noble, Joey Mercury, Big Show and Seth Rollins. It was revealed that the newly rehired talent would need to win Royal Rumble qualifying matches on tonight’s show.
Dolph Ziggler was first up against Bad News Barrett. Unsurprisingly, Dolph won. The finish was with the Zig Zag. Ziggler will definitely be one of the better performers in the Rumble this Sunday.

Smackdown was filmed on Tuesday night, with the show now airing on Thursday nights. Emanating from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the show was promoted around the in-ring return of Daniel Bryan.
The show started with Bryan’s match against Kane. Unfortunately it was cut short when Jamie Noble, Joey Mercury, Seth Rollins and Big Show got involved. That set up a six man main event for later, after Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns ran in to save Bryan.
Bray Wyatt did a promo and declared his intention to win the Royal Rumble. In reality, he’s a big outside bet.
The Miz and Damien Mizdow and Alicia Fox defeated The Usos and Naomi. It was then announced that The Usos vs Miz and Mizdow would take place at Royal Rumble for the tag team titles.

So, it’s been a while since I wrote WWE Raw reviews, but here goes, I’m guessing this is like riding a muscular, spandex-clad bicycle. We are half way through January, and that means one thing in the world of professional wrestling; we’re almost at Royal Rumble, and thus; almost on the road to WrestleMania.
I, for one, have always been a fan of the first quarter of WWE’s year. Rumble, Mania, and some excellent Raw events are promoted in order to bring in a big number of fans for the company’s annual “big” show. So, really, from now until mid-April, no Raw should be wasted, and no event should feel “phoned in”.
We go right to the ring tonight, with John Cena standing, smiling, doing his comedy stuff and talking about a mixture of things such as… fun, The Authority, bring upset, Triple H and the “firings” of Dolph Ziggler,...

Smackdown was taped this week from Laredo, Texas. The show started with an in-ring promo from heel supremo Seth Rollins, who was flanked by Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury. The segment was interrupted by a big pop for the emergence of Roman Reigns, with the Big Dog proceeding to challenge Rollins. He chased the heels out of the ring, only for The Big Show to come out from the back. It was announced that Show would team with Rollins against Reigns and a partner in the main event. Reigns had to find a partner.
Adam Rose faced Big E, with the big man accompanied by the New Day. Rose was doing the job, in a short and forgettable match.
The Acsension did the same act from Raw, cutting a promo and then squashing a pair of local nameless jobbers. While this can be effective in establishing a new team,...

The holidays are supposed to be all about giving. And WWE did give us something all right: five hours of crap! You’d think they would like to reward us with some good shows for being loyal viewers over the year. They should also want to put forth an entertaining product, so when fans sit down and watch wrestling with their relatives, they’ll create some memories that will last a lifetime. Unfortunately, no one will want to remember Ho Ho Hogan. Especially Hogan.
In other news, Kevin Nash was arrested, which isn’t a good way to spend the holidays unless you’re Nailz. Seth Rollins, Joey Mercury and Jamie Noble combined their powers on Raw and still weren’t enough for Captain Planet, I mean John Cena. And Kane was flown into Minneapolis and paid to say exactly two words on Raw. How does one get that job?...

In what appears to be the main event of Survivor Series, it was announced on Raw that Team Authority will take on Team Cena in a traditional Survivor Series elimination match. There were no specifics made about the match. Traditional Survivor Series elimination match usually means 5 on 5 although it could be 4 on 4. They still have four weeks to decide how exactly it will go.
With no sign of WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, John Cena can’t challenge for the WWE Title yet. That’s probably going to happen at the Royal Rumble although that wasn’t officially announced either. The matchup of Team Authority taking on Team Cena was set up on Raw after Stephanie McMahon wanted Cena to join The Authority. How many times have they tried to do that angle? Cena said no, of course, so Triple H came out to announce the Survivor Series main event.

Raise your hands if, like me, you assumed Randy Orton would cost Seth Rollins his win against Dean Ambrose in the Hell in a Cell main event, putting their feud front and center, while Bray Wyatt would return from retooling on Raw and pick a fight with Ambrose.
Raise the other one if, when Wyatt ran interference during Ambrose and Rollins' disappointing main-event blow-off, you said to yourself, "Much as I love nearly being right, and an enjoy an homage to Princess Leia's Star Wars hologram, what was accomplished here...

WWE’s Smackdown show was taped from Wichita, Kansas this week. The Hell In A Cell go-home show will air this Friday and it represents WWE’s final effort to sell the show.
The broadcast will open up with Dean Ambrose in the ring for a promo. He called out Seth Rollins and emphasised their storied history. The heel then came out and informed Ambrose that he’d be seeing him later in the show. This was a pretty low-profile opening and too reminiscent of the standard angles we’ve been seeing for weeks now.
The Miz and Damien Sandow beat Los Matadores in a throw-away filler match.
Aj Lee defeated Alicia Fox with a roll up, to restore some momentum for her title defence against Paige this weekend.
Dolph Ziggler defended his intercontinental title against Cesaro. The champ retained with a Zig Zag in what was (unsurprisingly) a great match.

It was none other than WWE developmental scout and road agent Adam Birch (aka Joey Mercury) who stated in a recent WWE documentary about The Shield that having an independent wrestling background was a surefire way to prepare oneself for a successful run in WWE developmental promotion Nxt. Given the recent indies-to-nxt-to-wwe success stories of Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose (a Fcw TV staple) and Luke Harper, plus the current success being had by Adrian Neville, Sami Zayn, Bull Dempsey, Corey Graves and more, Birch could be telling the truth. For as maligned as independent wrestling is for portly and out-of-shape semi-wrestlers and less-than-adequate conditions for performing, the independent scene is a vibrant as ever before with a larger pool of talent slowly figuring out what it takes to make it to the top.

The world of professional wrestling has, for many years, featured hundreds of various alliances, groups of men and women who, for countless reasons, teamed together in order to achieve something that they would be unable to achieve alone. Be it a group of good guys sticking together, as friends, to take down the heels, or the bad guys forming a gang as a way to intimidate, attack and overthrow the babyfaces. It has worked for decades and continues to this very day, with factions such as The Shield and The Wyatt Family (oh… and don’t forget 3Mb) running rough-shot through WWE on their way to super-stardom. But, like I said, factions aren’t a new thing, they’ve been around for as long as steel folding chairs, brittle announce tables and sneaky managers, and this release is WWE’s look at some of the standout factions that have firmly...

A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.
Differences in methodology from Morris
I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...

The use of blood in pro wrestling has been a part of the business for many years. While it’s hard to track down when it first started being used in matches or who was the first to do it, the fact is that it’s been a tool to tell stories within a match for several decades now.
In today’s WWE, you won’t see matches with blood. A guy may get a cut above an eye because of a punch or going into some object, but there’s no more intentional blood. The PG era restarted again in 2008, so there won’t be anything on here that came after that. From the mid 90s until 2008 there were plenty of bloody moments, though.
A popular term that announcers would use to talk about blood in match is “crimson mask.

Wrestling is a tough business. What other form of entertainment asks its performers to be bodyslammed, Tombstone piledriven and thrown through a table? Nothing, that’s what! For the performers, there’s no quit. They can’t just give up mid-match if they’re hurt. They have to keep going no matter how much blood they’ve lost or how much pain they’re in.
Someone has to get pinned.
Here, we take a look at the worst injuries in a WWE ring where the stars were somehow able to finish the match. Horrifying injuries like Joey Mercury breaking his nose on a ladder shot to the face, and Bob Holly breaking his neck from a powerbomb won’t be found here, since those incidents happened at the end of a match, or they were unable to continue.
It takes an incredible amount of guts and fortitude to keep working through extreme pain.

With Extreme Rules on the horizon, it seems kind of strange to have a show title that conjures up ideas and visuals of blood and violence in an age of WWE programming that is so opposed to ethos. So, I wanted to take a look back and talk about some of the best and most extreme matches from the vaults of the WWE, and most of them you can find on You Tube or various DVD box-sets.
To be clear, I have excluded many gimmick matches like Cage, Hell in a Cell etc. They can compose a number of different lists all together. But, I have opened this up to include hardcore, falls count anywhere or anything else that involves weapons or outside area spots, as these matches are often very much the same idea. And, the list is drawn from the WWE/WWF product not Ecw, WCW etc. If...

A home video release solely dedicated to the voice of the voiceless, Cm Punk, has been an extremely long awaited one for me so let’s get too it – Adam.
Main Feature
The long awaited set begins with a short, slightly cheesy, package showing Punk prepare for his day. It is something against the norm for WWE release but thinking about it, Cm Punk is against the norm for WWE TV so in that sense its effective.
Moving on and hearing Punk re tell stories from his childhood hits hard, probably because his life hasn’t been expressed in various other books or DVD sets etc. Punk recalls not wanting to stay at home and eventually being seemingly adopted by his best friends family, it’s interesting to look into a situation where someone, as strange as it may seem, was born into the wrong family.
