Wes Craven's 1977 film "The Hills Have Eyes," like Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" before it, features a vanload of city folks who find themselves waylaid in a forgotten corner of the American wasteland. In Craven's film, the wasteland is not rural Texas, but the irradiated deserts of Nevada. The protagonists (Dee Wallace is among them) are beset by the brood of the sadistic Papa Jupiter (James Whitworth), including Mars (Lance Gordon), Mercury (Arthur King), and Pluto (Michael Berryman). Years ago, Jupiter moved into the hills with his wife (Cordy Clark) and raised their children to attack and cannibalize passers-through in order to survive. "The Hills Have Eyes" is raw and brutal, but possessed of a winking sense of humor that horror fans will appreciate.
The original film only cost about $700,000 to make (although the actual budget isn't very well recorded), yet it went on to make over $25 million,...

The Hills Have Eyes 2. No, not that one. That’s The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 and has one of the greatest things ever filmed where a dog, an actual dog, has a flashback and its just, muah, chef’s kiss. While I actually think that original 1985 sequel is way too much fun for its own good – it was written and directed by Craven, brings back Michael Berryman, has Harry Manfredini give us the score, and oh yeah, has a dog flashback. A Dog, Flashback – I’m not here to talk about that one that is probably so bad it’s good. I’m here to discuss the true black sheep of this inbred mountain family and give you all a look at the movie that is not a remake of the sequel but rather a sequel to the remake. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (watch it Here) is a...

If the most terrifying horror monsters are the ones that most reflect real-life terror, then cinematic cannibals might be the most terrifying monsters of all. Unlike vampires, werewolves, or ghosts, cannibals on film are fully flesh-and-blood humans — just with a taste for the flesh and blood of other humans. The garishness of the act makes cannibalism a perfect subject for shock horror, and the cannibal film fully came alive in the ’70s and ’80s via low-budget splatter triumphs like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Cannibal Holocaust,” which pitted their protagonists against horrific waves of flesh eaters.
In recent years, cannibalism has had a bit of a “moment” — on film, at least. As The New York Times pointed out in 2022, a wave of movies, TV shows, and books exploring cannibalism has emerged in popular culture, from “Yellowjackets” to “Bones and All” to “Fresh.” Many of these projects use the practice as...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived, kid-friendly horror series “Deadtime Stories,” which aired on Nickelodeon from 2012-2014.
For many years in the aughts, after Nickelodeon brought “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” to a close, the channel spent a lot of time investing in teen comedies and sitcoms. But with the resurgence of horror television around 2012, Nickelodeon began trying their hand at the horror genre once again. “Deadtime Stories” was born, an anthology horror-fantasy television series written by Annette Cascone and based on the Scholastic book series of the same title, which was created by both Annette and Gina Cascone.
“Deadtime Stories” premiered on Nickelodeon shortly after Halloween in 2012. The series, despite its title, was geared primarily for the age 7-10 crowd, and it amounted to some good gateway horror for budding horror geeks. Directed mainly by Daniel Hillebrand, “Deadtime Stories” featured some interesting guest stars like Diane Ladd,...

“We’re gonna be French fries! Human French fries!”
We’ve talked about the loose definition of based on a true story but what happen when what the movie is based on may not even be entirely factual. This is can happen with movies like The Possession which was based on an internet article that someone fleshed out into a story when they thought the thing they bought was cool. Other times a movie can be merely inspired by an event even when they don’t credit that event in the film’s credits. Think A Nightmare On Elm Street. The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Pool Party Massacre
Summer is well underway, and if you’ve already exhausted all the seasonal classics, Pool Party Massacre can fill the void with a comedic send-up to ’80s slashers like Slumber Party Massacre and Sleepaway Camp (both also on Screambox). Written and directed by Drew Marvick, the 2017 low-budget indie embraces the era with 80 minutes of over-the-top characters, campy performances, and cheesy practical effects.
The titular party isn’t very festive; it’s more like a small gathering of vapid, Real Housewives rejects that barely tolerate one another while lounging by the pool. One by one, a character excuses themselves — including, in one instance,...

Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Director S. Craig Zahler made his feature debut with this excellent blend of the horror and Western genres, which pits a group of men – played by Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, and Patrick Wilson – against a group of cave-dwelling cannibals who have taken the wife of Wilson’s character captive. With a running time of 132 minutes, Bone Tomahawk takes its time showing the men’s journey to the tribe’s cave… but when the violence breaks out, it’s worth the wait. If you can stomach the gore.

Cinema fans have been familiar with Michael Berryman for decades. He made his first screen appearance in the 1975 film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, following that up with a role in the Best Picture winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Next up was his most iconic role, that of the desert-dwelling cannibal Pluto in Wes Craven’s 1977 film The Hills Have Eyes, a role he reprised in the messy 1984 sequel The Hills Have Eyes Part II. He has gone on to rack up over one hundred more credits, including roles in films like Deadly Blessing, Invitation to Hell, Cut and Run, Weird Science, My Science Project, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, The Guyver, Beastmaster 2, Wizards of the Demon Sword, Teenage Exorcist, The Devil’s Rejects, Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield, The Haunted Casino, The Lords of Salem, and Death House.

There are relatively few famous unfinished films, ranging from von Sternberg’s “I, Claudius” to Jerry Lewis’ “The Day the Clown Cried” to various Orson Welles joints that continue to be patched together by former collaborators long after his death. But most such projects, usually abandoned due to financial and/or legal woes, languish in an obscurity compounded by the fact no one cries for the resuscitation of something they don’t know exists.

In director Wes Craven’s 1977 horror masterpiece The Hills Have Eyes, a family run into trouble when their campervan breaks down in the middle of the desert, leaving them at the mercy of a clan of cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills.
To celebrate the release of the definitive edition of this defining classics of American horror, on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD from Arrow Video (featuring a brand new 4K restoration of the film and a cave-full of extras), here are nine horror films featuring murderous families – from seemingly sedate suburban couples driven to murder, to supposedly respectable hotel proprietors with a very grim secret – whose paths you really don’t want to cross!

Suffice to say, if you inadvertently ended up bedding down for the night in the home of the parents whose daughter you had just savagely killed, you can expect a rude awakening.

In 1984 Taiwanese martial artist and actor John Liu came to New York City with the intention of filming his latest movie there. While he did shoot it, he was so unimpressed by the results he abandoned the project and left the unedited footage in a vault and retired from filmmaking. Originally filmed in 1984, John Liu’s “New York Ninja” was left unfinished as the martial arts standout lacked the resources to have the film completed, and shortly after decided to retire from show business all together. Cut to the current year, where Vinegar Syndrome was able to get a copy of the unfinished negatives and soon realized that the film was a hidden gem ripe for re release to the modern crowd of cinephiles who embrace the absurdity of 80s over-the-top schlock. In order to remaster the film required all new audio and soundtrack, and to best capture the aesthetic of the period, Vinegar Syndrome relied on the talents of cult icons like Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Cynthia Rothrock, Ginger Lynn Allen and Michael Berryman, along with music by Voyag3r to breathe new life into the long-lost film. The result, a perfect midnight film that has the...

Horror master Wes Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street – but for many genre fans, the director’s seminal 1977 effort The Hills Have Eyes remains his masterpiece.
Taking an ill-advised detour en route to California, the Carter family soon run into trouble when their campervan breaks down in the middle of the desert. Stranded, the family find themselves at the mercy of a group of monstrous cannibals lurking in the surrounding hills. With their lives under threat, the Carters have no choice but to fight back by any means necessary.

"This city owes... justice." Vinegar Syndrome has unveiled the brand new trailer for a long lost 80s campy action film titled New York Ninja, which has been finished and is ready for release in 4K this year after a premiere at Beyond Fest. Originally directed by & starring martial arts actor John Liu in his only American production, New York Ninja was filmed entirely on 35mm in 1984, but the project was abandoned during production resulting in all original sound materials, scripts, and treatments going missing. 35 years later, Vinegar Syndrome acquired the original unedited negative and painstakingly completed the film. Now with the voices of Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Michael Berryman, Vince Murdocco, Matt Mitler, Leon Isaac Kennedy, Ginger Lynn Allen, and Cynthia Rothrock. A sound technician for a news station becomes a vigilante ninja in NYC after his pregnant wife is murdered. Restored in 4K from the original camera elements,...

Hello, dear readers! If you’ve been following along the last few weeks, we here at Daily Dead have been celebrating all the amazing horror and sci-fi films that were released throughout the year 1981. And even though we’ve covered so many fantastic films, I wanted to take an opportunity to turn the spotlight on just a few more standout movies that were released during that year that are deserving of some love before we bid our Class of 1981 celebration a fond farewell.
Cheers!

Decades later, with the town terrorized once again by a string of bloody ritual killings, a mysterious woman named Star arrives to investigate and suffers bizarre flashbacks related to the inn’s slayings. "These murders... seem personal." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Room 9, the latest feature from actor / filmmaker Thomas Walton. This is getting a direct-to-dvd release which is pretty much already an indication of the quality, with a derivative plot that sounds similar to so many other mystery thrillers. Life altering sins of the past revisit modern day lost souls in a small town... 40 years later. A mysterious woman arrives to investigate the site of a murder and suffers bizarre flashbacks related to the inn's slayings. Is she connected to the killings... or the next victim? The film stars Michael Berryman, Scout Taylor-Compton, Brian Anthony Wilson, Kane Hodder, Michael Emery, and Adam Ratcliffe. This looks like extra schlocky shock horror, which might be fun for some folks out there. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Thomas Walton's Room 9, direct from YouTube: Long ago, Room...

"Something is happening... Something is wrong... I'm seeing things..." Blue Fox Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Mad Hatter, set to be released sometime this summer. The film marks the feature directorial debut of a storyboard artist on Scott Derrickson's movies now making her first feature. Henry, and three of his classmates, encounter mind-bending ghostly terrors when they volunteer for a weekend study with their psychology professor in the haunted 'Mad Hatter' mansion. Supposedly haunted by those who died at a lavish party in the 1880s. I dig the smoldering embers look of all the ghosts, just hope the rest of it lives up to that potential for something really cool. The film stars Armando Gutierrez, Samuel Caleb Walker, Isadora Cruz, Nick Miller, Michael Berryman, and Rachel Brunner. This does look extremely creepy - check it out. Here's the two main trailers...

It’s been a few years since the film world lost Wes Craven; and while many reach for A Nightmare on Elm Street, or The Hills have Eyes, or Scream, some like to take the time to appreciate the under sung tunes in his catalogue. This is where I enthusiastically raise a mic and start warbling about Deadly Blessing (1981), an intriguing mix of slasher, the supernatural, and religious fanaticism that could only come from the busy, brainy mind of Mr. Craven.
Released in mid-August by United Artists stateside, Deadly Blessing received no favor from critics, but did bring in over $8 million against a $2 million budget; not too bad for Craven during this period, who found himself making (highly enjoyable) TV films to keep the lights on.
Our story opens in an Amish-like farming community called “Our Blessing”; but instead of the Amish, these are Hittites, a group that one person intones,...

Hello again, dear readers. Right now, we’re living in unprecedented times, and it’s nice that, if nothing else, we still have entertainment to help us through all of this. Most of us are preparing for another month of self-isolation and thankfully we have a ton of horror and sci-fi titles hitting various VOD and Digital platforms throughout the month of April. Also, I decided to feature some special streaming events here as well, beyond the regular digital releases we usually get, as I thought it might be helpful to have as many distractions as we could possibly get over the next few weeks or so.

For the final week of home media releases in September, genre fans have a lot to get excited over, as we have a multitude of titles coming our way on Tuesday. Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 will be available on Blu-ray September 17th from Arrow Video
The hills are once again alive with the sound of screaming in Wes Craven s hugely entertaining follow-up to his own groundbreaking 1977 The Hills Have Eyes.
A motocross team on their way to trial a new super-fuel head out across the desert lead by Rachel, who, unbeknownst to the rest of the group, is a survivor of the cannibal clan which menaced the Carter family several years before. He’s part of the the reason you look under your bed at night.
His name’s Robert Englund, and for 35 years, you’ve probably referred to him as Freddy Krueger. Believe it or not, that’s about as long as it’s been since Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street first hit theaters, and among the several spinoffs and sequels it’s spawned, the film’s become a cult horror classic.
A lot of this acclaim can surely be attributed to Englund, whose eerie performance as the iconic dream-hunter has become a staple of scream cinema – showcased in seven additional films ranging from 1985 to 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. So it makes sense that people want to know his story.
