Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film reviews for the new releases “The Blackening,” a tart horror/comedy directed by Tim Story and the mystery comedy/romance “Maggie Moores(s), directed by John Slattery. Both In theaters since June 16th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“The Blackening” makes fun of the trope that the African-American character is often the first to die in horror movies by placing an all-Black group of friends in the proverbial cabin in the woods, during the Juneteenth weekend. There are confronted by a masked killer who demands that they rank their “degree of blackness” so that he can determine the correct order in which to kill them, and the cabin dwellers must rely on a combination of street smarts and their own knowledge of black history and horror films to survive.

(l-r) Tina Fey as Rita and Jon Hamm as Chief Sanders, in Maggie Moore(S). Courtesy of Screen Media
Fans of quirky, darkly comedic murder mysteries should find Maggie Moore(S) to be a worthy descendant of films like Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri that is right in their wheelhouse. In a small town that sees little crime, Police Chief Jordan Sanders (Jon Hamm) and his semi-useful deputy Reddy (British comedian Nick Mohammed) find the body of a young woman named Maggie Moore. Her husband is grieving but it’s not clear if he’s sincere. Before they can solve that crime, another Maggie Moore around the same age turns up dead. Her husband also seems suspicious, although for completely different reasons. The two women didn’t know each other, or have any identifiable connection, but Hamm suspects the killings of blond Maggie and brunette Maggie must somehow be intertwined.

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.

There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.
The first Maggie to die (played by Emily Blunt) is married to Jay (Micah Stock), the owner of a restaurant franchise who plans to become the Howard Schultz of submarine sandwiches.

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance. And the festival will close with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, the directorial debut of Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.

Is this a thrilling, Chinatown-like Hollywood mystery, or a semi-docu about the making of the first TV Superman show? Or is it going to shed light on the mysterious death of actor George Reeves, the childhood hero we couldn’t believe had died by his own hand? Allen Coulter’s well-crafted show has a lot to say and says it well with an excellent cast… yet it needed something it doesn’t deliver. If you don’t require your movieland mysteries tied up in a neat bow, this could fit the bill.

Does the idea of Paul Giamatti playing Nikita Khrushchev sound vaguely familiar? Then you might have a very good memory. First announced way back in 2010, this Cold War drama has been brewing over at HBO and now it looks like it's finally building some steam. THR reports that "The Campaign" director Jay Roach will take on the film, "K Blows Top," with Giamatti in the lead role. Based on the book by Peter Carlson, the comedy will focus on Khrushchev's somewhat surreal 1959 visit to America, right at the height of Cold War tensions between the two nations. Paul Bernbaum ("Next," "Hollywoodland") wrote the script, and Roach is a pretty slam dunk fit. While the helmer is probably best known for his "Meet the Parents" flicks and the 'Austin Powers' movies, he's carved out a career as a political filmmaker as well, getting behind this spring's "Game Change" about the McCain/Palin ticket of.

"Game Change," the Sarah Palin election film that attracted a lot of attention for both its portrayal of its subject and an eerie central performance from star Julianne Moore, worked well for HBO. So well, in fact, that the network will once again work with director Jay Roach, who helmed both "Game Change" and the 2008 Bush/Gore original film "Recount." Roach's new HBO project, "K Blows Top," will be another political-themed movie, this one set a little further back in the past. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will be set in September of 1959, when Nikita Khrushchev (to be played by Paul Giamatti) visited and toured the U.S. for almost two weeks as part of the Cold War "thaw." Paul Bernbaum ("Hollywoodland") wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Peter Carlson's 2009 book of the same name. Reviewing the book in the Washington Post, Jacob Heilbrunn wrote: In September 1959, Soviet.

Hollywood and politics might make strange bedfellows, but Jay Roach is quite comfortable with the arrangement. While Hollywoodland doesn't learn much about the murder of George Reeves, the actor who played Superman on TV from 1951 to 1958, Hollywoodland offers a good exploration of North America's cultural mentality at the end of the 1950s.In 1959, in Los Angeles, George Reeves (Ben Affleck) is found dead in his bedroom. Obviously, the Lapd closes the investigation and concludes that Reeves committed a suicide. However, Helen Bessolo (Lois Smith), Reeves's mother, hires Louis Simo (Adrien Brody), a private detective, to shed the light on her son's death.
As Simo advances in his investigation, we see through flashbacks George Reeves' last days. He wanted to leave Superman behind and be a movie star. No wonder Reeves had an affair with Toni Manix (Diane Lane), the wife of MGM's general manager (Bob Hoskins). In fact, Reeves hoped that Toni will convince her husband to offer him a role in a film.

"Sopranos" helmer Allen Coulter has come aboard to direct Focus Features' "Truth, Justice and the American Way." The project aims to go into production in late summer or early fall. Written by Paul Bernbaum, "Truth" is a drama in the tone of "L.A. Confidential", based around the mysterious 1959 death of television actor George Reeves, better known as the original "Superman", and the botched investigation that followed as well as the actor's relationship with the iconic role. Bernbaum will do a rewrite of the script under Coulter's supervision. "Truth" most recently was set up at Miramax Films, with Michael and Mark Polish attached to direct. The project originated at Focus in 2001 when the company was still known as USA Films. Coulter, repped by BWCS, was nominated for an Emmy four times for his work on the HBO Mafia series. Other credits include "Sex and the City" and the recent NBC pilot "Kingpin". On the film side, he continues to be attached to direct New Line Cinema's "Alone" and Universal Pictures/Jersey Films' "Lost Girls", both in active development.
