"We're just going to take this step by step..." Music Box Films has revealed an official trailer for Familiar Touch, a lovely indie drama marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sarah Friedland. It's worth a watch. This won the Best Actress & Best Director & Best Debut Film awards in the Orizzonti section at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, then went on to play at the Vancouver, London, Tromso, Singapore, AFI Fest, New Films/New Directors Film Festivals as well. Familiar Touch is a coming-of-old-age film about an older woman dealing with memory loss. It's lead by a remarkable performance by Tony nominee Kathleen Chalfant as Ruth. Made in close collaboration with residents of a retirement community, it challenges the perceptions around aging and sensitively depicts the complexities around intimacy and desire in later life. The film follows the winding path of octogenarian Ruth's shifting memories and desires while remaining rooted in her sage perspective.

One of the best first features in recent memory, Sarah Friedland’s wonderfully gentle Familiar Touch premiered at the Venice Film Festival where it picked up Best Director, Best Actress, and Best First Film in the Orizzonti section. After opening New Directors/New Films, the drama will now begin a theatrical run on June 20, and Music Box Films has unveiled the first trailer.
Here’s the synopsis: “Ruth (Kathleen Chalfant), a retired cook, prepares breakfast in her sunny and cozy kitchen — a dish she seems to have made many times before, although small and puzzling errors now punctuate her comfortable routine. When her son (H. Jon Benjamin) arrives to dine with her, she mistakes him for a suitor. Their ‘date’ takes them to an assisted living facility, which Ruth does not remember that she had previously selected for herself. Among her fellow memory care residents, Ruth feels lost and adrift,...

“Familiar Touch” captures the loneliness of forgetting coupled with the joy of rediscovering what it means to feel alive. The drama, which is written and directed by Sarah Friedland, became a critical hit after it premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival where it was later acquired by Music Box Films.
“Familiar Touch” stars Tony Award nominee Kathleen Chalfant as Ruth Goldman, an older woman with dementia who realizes that her “hotel” is actually an assisted living facility. Of course, this realization happens once she is about to go on a date.
The official synopsis reads: “While Ruth resists identifying with her aging neighbors, she connects with the care workers there (Carolyn Michelle and Andy McQueen) and is drawn towards her son (H. Jon Benjamin), whom she mistakes for a suitor. A former cook, Ruth finds agency preparing meals in the facility kitchen. She slides into younger selves as she embraces...

With hits from ‘The Simpsons’ to ‘Solar Opposites,’ Hulu has quietly built the strongest animated lineup on streaming.
Animated comedies are my comfort food. When life’s chaotic, there’s nothing better than sinking into the couch and putting on an episode of “The Simpsons.” That show has literally been around as long as I have, and it’s still going strong. Then came “Family Guy” about a decade later, and even though the tone is way different, it quickly earned a spot on my go-to list. Between those two, you’ve basically got the blueprint for modern animated comedy. And the best part? They’re both streaming on Hulu, along with a ridiculous number of other hits from FX and Fox. If animated sitcoms are your thing, there’s really no better place to stream. Here’s why Hulu’s the best of the bunch for streaming animated comedy TV shows.

About an hour into Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland’s feature directorial debut, a subtle yet striking stylistic rupture occurs. The effects of dementia on octogenarian Ruth Goldman (Kathleen Chalfant) grow gradually more pronounced as her stay in assisted living stretches on. In gentle gestures—most frequently a pronounced pause—Chalfant renders what the disease takes from her character by making present an overwhelming sense of absence.
But when the camera surveys Ruth in a doctor’s chair, following Chalfant’s hands downward as she caresses her chest and arms, the film shifts out of its thus-far straightforward perspective. The scene jumps unexpectedly away from the room to a moment of tender hand-holding that Ruth shares with her doctor at the facility before returning to Ruth grasping her wrist. The tactile has supplanted the temporal, and it jolts the film into an enthralling new register.
This sensorial, rather than sensationalist, approach...

Resident Alien has been a delight since its premiere in 2021, seamlessly blending situational comedy with sci-fi world-building and a quirky imagination. Season 3, perhaps its best yet, premiered more than one year ago, and fans are eagerly awaiting Season 4 as the show heads to the USA Network.
There's a kindness and a deep understanding of the human condition laced throughout that show, and it constantly reminds me of possibly my favorite sci-fi comedy on television, a very similar (and arguably even better) series from 2016 that aired on TBS. It developed a small but loyal cult following in Season 2 after word-of-mouth spread, and was renewed for Season 3. Until it wasn't.

Tribbles were originally cute and cuddly little balls of fluff before Star Trek kept changing them. Tribbles famously made their Star Trek debut in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2, episode 15, "The Trouble with Tribbles," when Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his USS Enterprise crew encounter them aboard a space station. When Lt. Uhrua (Nichelle Nichols) brings one of the little creatures up to the Enterprise, one Tribble quickly turns into thousands of Tribbles with truly hilarious results.
Tribbles emit a pleasant cooing sound when held by most humanoids (aside from Klingons), producing a tranquilizing effect on human nervous system, in particular. Tribbles have appeared in numerous Star Trek television shows and movies, both in the background, and as central plot points. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine even revisited "The Trouble with Tribbles" in the excellent season 5 episode, "Trials and Tribble-ations." Although Tribbles were a nuisance to the United Federation of Planets,...

Star Trek's Tribbles may seem like innocuous balls of fluff, but they actually prove that the United Federation of Planets can be hypocritical. Introduced in the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles," Tribbles are small non-intelligent life forms known for their astonishing reproductive rate. As seen in "The Trouble with Tribbles," one of the little creatures could quickly turn into hundreds and then thousands, overrunning even a massive starship or space station. Since their introduction, other Star Trek projects have revisited the Tribbles, revealing more about their troubling history with Starfleet.
The Tribbles have an equally tumultuous history with the Klingon Empire. Although Tribbles emitted a quiet cooing sound when handled by most humanoid species, they reacted negatively toward Klingons. The Klingons saw the Tribbles as a menace to their society and sought to wipe them out entirely. As revealed in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,...

Bob's Burgers is one of the funniest animated sitcoms, currently in its 15th season. The series centers around the Belcher family: Bob and Linda and their kids, Tina, Gene and Louise, as they work in their struggling burger restaurant. Bob's Burgers, much like most animated sitcoms, doesn't have a lot of continuity. Instead, the series follows the Belchers and other characters and the different adventures and hijinks they get into. And like most animated sitcoms, too, the ages of the characters can be a little blurry.
While the ages of most Bob's Burgers characters are mentioned at one point or another, their birthdates aren't. Characters can be the same age for many years until they celebrate a birthday, as happens in most animated sitcoms. It's hard to keep track of everyone's ages in these types of shows, but Bob's Burgers is at least consistent once a birthday is mentioned. So,...

Music Box has acquired North American rights to “Familiar Touch,” Sarah Friedland’s feature debut which won three major awards in Venice including the Lion of the Future prize.
Represented by Memento International, “Familiar Touch” also won best actress for Kathleen Chalfant, and best director in the Horizons section at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Friedland is now nominated in the “Someone to Watch” award category ahead of the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards.

James Bond, author Ian Fleming's legendary creation, has been the quintessential spy character for over 70 years since his first appearance in the 1953 novel Casino Royale. The role has been embodied by some of the best actors of all time, from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, each bringing their own ideals and spin to the character that makes each iteration of 007 something different. Though Bond is often seen as a suave, unstoppable agent, he isn't flawless, with weaknesses and faults that have helped his enemies gain the upper hand - if only for a little.
The spy genre as a whole doesn't live and die with Bond, with countless secret agents who could best him in many fields. Spies like Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible franchise, who has unparalleled athleticism, or even George Smiley from one of the best British spy series, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, who has...

A decade before Bob’s Burgers premiered, creator Loren Bouchard developed the cult series Home Movies, which ran for four seasons, first on Upn and then on Adult Swim. The show follows an awkward 8-year-old boy Brendon Small, voiced by the actor/comedian Brendon Small, who co-created the show before going on to co-create and star in Metalocalypse. Bob’s Burgers star H. Jon Benjamin plays Brendon's soccer coach, John McGuirk. Home Movies has a cruder animation style than Bob’s Burgers and doesn’t have the same tight sitcom plotting. This is because it’s largely improvised with scripts that are rough outlines. This gives it a unique feel and emphasizes the awkwardness of the characters. The dialogue is genuinely strange and uncomfortable in a way even the best writers can’t recreate. Although the style is more rough around the edges, everything that makes Bob’s Burgers special is present in its predecessor.
