Production designer Annie Beauchamp was tasked with creating a grounded yet advanced vision of the future in the new Apple TV+ film “Swan Song.” The film, set about 20 years in the future, tells the story of a man named Cameron Turner (Mahershala Ali), who is dying of terminal cancer and seeks out an experimental new treatment that would allow himself to be cloned, for the benefit of his family. While the plot and setting may be high concept, “Swan Song” is a love story at its core, and it was important for her to reflect that. “I felt the design on this film could really elevate and visually advance the emotion and the intimacy in those special moments,” says Beauchamp in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. Production designer for High Ground Ross Wallace and The Invisible Man’s Alex Holmes will compete for the night’s top gong against Relic‘s Steven Jones-Evans and True History of the Kelly Gang‘s Karen Murphy.
In television, battling for the production designer award are Hungry Ghost‘s Carrie Kennedy, On Becoming A God In Central Florida‘s Annie Beauchamp, Stateless’ Melinda Doring and The Luminaries‘ Felicity Abbott.
There are 23 categories for this year’s awards, including the traditional live performance, film, television, event, animation and costume design awards, in addition to new categories that include set decorators, screen graphic designers and live performance video designers.

The first round of Aacta Award winners have been announced today at the 4th Aacta Award Luncheon held at the Star Event Centre in Sydney.
Celebrating screen craft excellence in Australia, 22 awards were presented, recognising the work of screen practitioners working in television, documentary, short fiction film, short animation and feature film.
The Luncheon was hosted by writer/actor/producer/director Adam Zwar, who was also joined throughout the event by a list of distinguished presenters. including Aacta President Geoffrey Rush, David Stratton, Damian Walshe-Howling, Alexandra Schepisi, Charlotte Best and Diana Glenn.

The government screen agency revealed in mid-December 2012 that it had spent its entire annual $42 million drama production allocation due to the unprecedented number of quality feature film and television projects seeking support. The shock announcement was reminiscent of the agency's abrupt decision to cut its investment cap in 2009 while several films were mid-financed. That decision.threw several major Australian productions into dissaray including The Tree and the biggest box office hit of.2010, Tomorrow When the War Began (Omnilab Media had to increase its investment at the last minute to ensure production).
Overspending on such a scale has never occurred before, even going back to the era of Screen Australia.s predecessor funding arm, the Film Finance Corporation.

The Australian Production Design Guild in association with Docklands Studios Melbourne is delighted to announce the nominees for the 2012 Awards for Excellence in Stage and Screen Design
The Australian Production Design Guild’s 2012 Awards for Excellence in Stage and Screen Design will be held on Wednesday 17th October 2012 at Parkview Room, Doltone House Darling Island Wharf from 6.30pm, where the winners across 16 categories will be announced.
“The number of entries was impressive” announced George Liddle, Chair of the Apdg Board. With so many quality entrants this year it was difficult for the judges to make a decision.

The Hunter has lead the Aacta Awards with 14 nominations including best film.
The film, by Daniel Nettheim, is also up for best direction, adapted screenplay, cinematography, sound, production design, costume, original music score, and visual effects. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe, Frances O’Connor, Sam Neill and Morgana Davies are all up for acting awards.
The film has currently made just over $1m at the local box office.
It’s the first year for the re-launched AACTAs, formerly the AFI awards.
The technical awards will be given out at a luncheon on 15 January at the Sydney Opera House, with an evening ceremony for the more ‘public-friendly’ awards held at the Opera House on 31 January.
Running against The Hunter for best film is Red Dog, Mad Bastards, The Eye of the Storm, Snowtown and Oranges and Sunshine.
