‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

Plot: The new epic chapter in the battle for Castle Grayskull!. The newly mechanized Skeletor, armed with Motherboard’s might, attacks Eternia’s heart while Prince Adam grapples with a new responsibility and what that means for him as He-Man!
Review: Back in 2021, I gave a glowing review to Kevin Smith’s revival of He-Man. Titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the Netflix original was released in two five-episode drops, both of which I loved. By the end of the full series, Smith’s vision came to fruition, even though many fans were not swayed. The second...

When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

Lionsgate gave director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening a theatrical release on June 16th, with a Premium VOD release following last Friday, July 7th. Now they have announced that a digital release is coming down the line on August 15th, with the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release following on August 22nd. The chaotic adventures of Joker’s psychopathic girlfriend and partner in crime, Harley Quinn are set to come out soon, as the DC animated black comedy superhero show’s Season 4 is marked for a July release.
The last season of ‘Harley Quinn’ began going deeper into her newly branded romantic relationship with Poison Ivy. When the season ended, Harley joined the Bat-Family while Ivy was poised to lead the Legion of Doom. In a funny twist, Batgirl is now the head of the Bat-Family as Bruce Wayne ended up being arrested for tax evasion.
Talking about the upcoming season and Harley’s new heroic role in the show with TVLine, showrunner Justin Halpern said, quoted by Collider: “Things are so binary in the superhero world. Like, there’s a bad guy, there’s a good guy, and the feeling you have to be one of those things. There’s also the idea of,...

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

Diedrich Bader has played the best friend before. He did it for nine seasons of The Drew Carey Show. He did it two decades later on Pamela Adlon’s meditative Better Things. He also did it plenty of other times in between. But something about being the Bob Odenkirk’s wingman on Lucky Hank, the AMC series based on Richard Russo’s 1997 novel Straight Man, made it feel different for Bader — a man whose IMDb tally currently stands at 237 acting credits.
“I had stopped feeling like an artist and more like a craftsman making cabinetry,” Bader says of his mindset before taking on the black comedy about aging academics. “There’s a lot of artistry in making cabinetry, but maybe once you’ve made too many, it’s like “Here’s another cabinet!” With this, I felt like “Here’s everything I’ve got. I can bring comedy, but I can also bring some reality.

Bob Odenkirk could find himself in the rare Emmy air this year. AMC will submit Odenkirk’s new series, “Lucky Hank,” in comedy categories for this year’s Emmy competition, Variety has confirmed.
Of course, AMC is also submitting the final episodes of Odenkirk’s “Better Call Saul” in the drama fields. Should Odenkirk be nominated in both the best drama actor and best comedy actor races, he would become the first performer in history to be nominated in both genres in the same year.
Several performers have been nominated and even won Emmys as both drama and comedy leads — but never at the same time. It’s a possibility: Odenkirk has been nominated five times in the best drama actor category for “Better Call Saul,” and this will be his final opportunity to compete in that race for “Saul”. Meanwhile, Odenkirk has been known first and foremost as a comedy performer,...

Hank is going to Hank.
If you didn't learn that from the series premiere of Lucky Hank, you'll know it after Lucky Hank Season 1 Episode 2, premiering Sunday on AMC and AMC+.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive clip from the new episode, and it features Bob Odenkirk delivering another masterclass in acting.
He was excellent on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but he's playing a very different role in Lucky Hank, showcasing his impressive acting range to perfection.
In the clip, Hank is given the opportunity to speak with Booker Prize winner George Saunders.
While anyone would be ecstatic about speaking with such a prestigious figure, Hank has other ideas.
It doesn't help matters that Hank learns just how much the college is paying for the privilege of having George at the campus.
It's a fun scene that showcases why the show has been such a resounding success with critics.

Shazam! viewers are pointing out a flaw in Zachary Levi’s claim about the film’s poor box office takings.
Sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods may have debuted at number one at the US box office, but it made just $30.5m, which was $20m below the first film’s opening weekend gross.
The takings were also short of its $35m projection, and Levi has suggested he knows the reason for this.
In response to a fan who said “there is no denying that at the moment there are many Snyder fans who are happy for the failure of your film”, Levi said: “Sad, but true.”
He added: “How much that actually affects the box office is anyone’s guess. But I think the biggest issue we’re having is marketing. This is a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren’t aware of that. Which is just a shame.

Attention, class: Bob Odenkirk is trading legal briefs for term papers in his new AMC dramedy Lucky Hank.
Sunday’s premiere introduces us to Hank Devereaux (played by the Better Call Saul alum), the chairman of the English department at a fictional Pennsylvania college. Hank is worn out and checked out, making a grocery list in his head while his students read their latest creative writing exercises aloud. The students notice, too — “Could you please, just for once, say something?” one of them pleads — so Hank obliges, ruthlessly picking apart the prose of a student named Bartow before launching into a rant.

If anybody deserved a break after completing the acclaimed run of Better Call Saul, it was Bob Odenkirk.
Odenkirk spent six seasons delivering an Emmy-worthy performance as the lead in an Emmy-worthy show, and somehow found a way to star in Amazon’s Undone, do a season of the Mr. Show-adjacent W/Bob & David for Netflix, play a key supporting role in The Post and a surely arduous lead role in Nobody, and to fit in various cameos and guest turns along the way. With all that happening, why aspire to be the cable version of David Boreanaz — a broadcast TV regular without pause since 1997 — at the same time?
Well, if Breaking Bad was Odenkirk’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (a key supporting role that became more important to the overall show as it progressed) and Better Call Saul was his Angel (a spinoff that didn’t inherently seem like a great idea,...

Some of the best television shows are about whip-smart operators and the political nuances of their professional worlds. So why then is it so challenging to make a satisfying series about academia? It’s not only difficult to think of a television show that has succeeded in lifting the veil of a university, it’s tough to think of shows that have even tried. The most recent swipe at it was Netflix’s “The Chair,” a thin but charming dramedy starring Sandra Oh that ended after a single season. Even as college campuses remain a go-to battleground for American culture wars, the inner lives of the professors caught in the crossfire are usually reserved for novels.
The latest such attempt to animate the tenured life is AMC’s “Lucky Hank,” which is built from just such a novel. It’s an adaptation of “Straight Man,” the Richard Russo novel that...

Less than a year after “Better Call Saul” wrapped its inconceivably excellent six-season run (somehow matching the towering precedent set by “Breaking Bad”), Bob Odenkirk is back on AMC. That’s good for the network, which has steadily built a fan base around the two-time Emmy winner via those back-to-back hits. No matter where he pops up, seeing Odenkirk on TV should never be taken for granted, even if his new series isn’t quite sure what it is yet.
Through only two episodes, it’s hard to tell if “Lucky Hank” could use a bit more of “Saul’s” eagerness to gaze into the darkness, or if it’d be better off dialing up its softer side. The “everything and the kitchen sink” approach taken by co-showrunners Aaron Zelman and Paul Lieberstein leaves enough room to pivot toward what’s working as the season goes on, but also too...

Television is a relatively new indulgence for South by Southwest. What started as a music conference and market for the exchange of pop cultural ideas in 1986 quickly grew into a full-blown film festival by 1994. It wasn’t until 2014, however, that TV fully got its due with the addition of “Episodic” programming to the SXSW Film Festival.
Now, nearly 10 years after television first arrived to the Austin, Texas get-together, the People’s Medium is well and truly having its moment at SXSW 2023. No fewer than 20 TV shows will have their premieres at SXSW this time around, running the gamut from tentpole streaming sci-fi to little-known pilots in search of a forever home
With that in mind, here is everything that SXSW attendees and TV fans in general can look forward to from SXSW 2023’s Episodic output.

"Tenure doesn't mean you can't get smacked in the face." AMC has revealed an official trailer for their new upcoming Bob Odenkirk series titled Lucky Hank, created by Aaron Zelman Paul Lieberstein, directed by Peter Farrelly. It will be out for streaming in March next month. The series follows the unlikely chairman of the English department, William Henry Devereaux, Jr. - a born anarchist - partly because his department is savagely divided. Over the course of a single convoluted week, he threatens to execute a duck, has his nose slashed by a feminist poet, discovers that his secretary writes better fiction than he does, suspects his wife of having an affair with his dean, and finally confronts his philandering elderly father, the one-time king of American Literary Theory. Bob Odenkirk stars with Mireille Enos & Olivia Scott Welch as his family. Additional series regulars include Sara Amini, Diedrich Bader, Suzanne Cryer,...

Bob Odenkirk is going through a midlife crisis in the AMC series, “Lucky Hank”.
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Straight Man, by Richard Russo, the “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” alum plays Hank Devereaux Jr., head of the English department at the underfunded Railton College, whose life begins to fall apart. Hank’s unhappiness is rooted in unresolved issues with his father, a mediocre and entitled student body and the fact that his department is more divided than ever. ‘The Killing”s Mireille Enos co-stars as Lily Devereaux, Hank’s wife and vice principal of a local high school, who starts to question the path she’s on and the choices she’s made amid his downward spiral.
The newly released trailer reveals the extent of Hank’s discontentment as he publicly declares to a class of students that they’re swimming in mediocrity and because they’re...

Being English department head doesn’t seem to have any special perks on the surface, but in the first official trailer for the AMC series Lucky Hank, Bob Odenkirk proves that it serves as great source material for maximum melodrama.
“The fact that you’re here means you show very little promise,” Professor Hank Devereau (Odenkirk) spits at a student before immediately asking: “Did that sound harsh?” Soon, a headline in the school newspaper reads: “Prof. Devereaux Calls All Railton Students Mediocre.”
