Netflix has raised the chequered flag and released a teaser trailer for the upcoming limited series on motor racing legend Ayrton Senna, ‘Senna’.
Throughout six episodes, the series will showcase, for the first time, Ayrton’s journey through triumph, disappointment, joy and sorrow, unveiling his personality and personal relationships. The fictional series starts with the genesis of the three-time Formula 1 champion’s motor racing career when he moves to England to compete in Formula Ford, and until his tragic accident in Imola, Italy, during the San Marino Grand Prix.
The teaser shows the recreation of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna’s historic victory, including the narration of Galvão Bueno, at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, following a challenging race where he was mostly stuck in sixth gear and also marking the first time he won in his hometown of Sao Paulo. Tomorrow marks 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver killed in a grisly crash on the track. He’s as close to a god in the country as any man not named Pelé, yet save for the brilliant 2010 documentary “Senna,” his life has never been depicted on screen.
Netflix will be the first to try with its upcoming scripted series “Senna.” With any luck, Senna will not just be an icon in Brazil but the face of Netflix’s enormous expansion into the Latin American market.
“Senna” showrunner Vicente Amorim says his series is one of the biggest productions in Latin American history and uses an almost entirely Brazilian crew, something that demanded a massive investment in the region from Netflix. No one will say how much the “Senna” budget is, but the production values and the re-creation of 13 F1 tracks and models of...

Netflix is readying the debut of crime original “Santo,” which bows Sept., 16, marking a new milestone for the U.S. streaming giant – its first fiction project shot between Spain and Brazil, two of its key overseas markets.
A major undertaking, the series packs experienced partners and behind-the-camera talent. Produced by Nostromo Pictures (“Through My Window”) with support from Prodigo Films (“Invisible City”), the six-episode series is created by Carlos López (“La Embajada”) and directed by Vicente Amorim (“Yakuza Princess”), an auteur who has consolidated in the last few years as one of Brazil’s foremost action series helmers, having been attached to direct Netflix banner title “Senna.”

“Senna,” Netflix’s biggest and most ambitious series ever in Latin America, now has a director. Seasoned Brazilian film-tv action thriller director Vicente Amorim — whose credits include “Good” with Viggo Mortensen and “Yakuza Princess,” with Japanese American singer Masumi and Jonathan Rhys Meyers — has boarded the production.
Portraying the life of Formula One racing genius Ayrton Senna, “Senna,” produced for Netflix Brazil by Sao Paulo-based Gullane in partnership with the Senna family, is now in prep.
The eight-episode fiction miniseries will plumb “the intimacy of the man who became a national hero and conquered the world,” Netflix Brazil announced on Monday.
It looks set to be the biggest play ever by Netflix for one of its biggest markets anywhere in international. In January 2021, Netflix was reported to have already run up 19 million household accounts in Brazil, nearly as many as the streamer’s then 25.49 million for the whole of Asia.

How did you first get involved with Yakuza Princess, and what about the character and the story made you interested in taking on this role?

Three months into the school, I found out that Kenny’s manager (Andrew Ooi) was at a meeting with Yakuza Princess’ producer regarding another project, and happened to have spoken about the movie. The world of low-budget martial arts movies can prove to be very rewarding if you enter it with the proper expectations. Are you cool with pulpy, frequently ridiculous narratives? If you answered yes to all three, we have some good news: we're giving away a copy of "Yakuza Princess," one of the newest additions to the genre.

Story of a yakuza turf war survivor smuggled to Brazil has real style and a devil-may-care cheek
Jonathan Rhys Meyers has turned up in some rum old places of late. He gave one of his best performances as a Gestapo officer in the Norwegian drama The 12th Man, largely overlooked in early 2019. Now the roaming Irishman can be seen playing second blade to the singer-actress Masumi in a thriller set among São Paulo’s Japanese community, the most populous of its kind outside Japan.
Vicente Amorim’s film is fundamentally an exercise in shifting fistfuls of tropes – and cliches: beardy senseis, terse men named Takeshi, ambient Christopher Doyle lighting – halfway around the globe for the heck of it. Reheated 10,000 miles from source, these ingredients are presented medium-fresh. Like street-cart fusion cuisine, this film will fill a hole, if you have a particular hankering.

Coming out this weekend in North America, Yakuza Princess is a Filmland Internacional Production and Warner Brothers co-production, in association with XYZ Films. Directed by Vicente Amorim, Yakuza Princess is adapted from the graphic novel "Samurai Shiro" by Danilo Beyruth. I haven't read the graphic novel, so I can't speak to any differences in the film as it pertains to the source material, though I do find it interesting that the title of the work is based on an important, yet different character. The title refers to titular character Akemi (singer Masumi, who spells her one name...

The legal drinking age in most countries around the globe is 18 years old; Brazil is among those nations. Japan, however, makes their young people wait until they turn 20 for the right to booze it up. Yet, in nonsensical fashion, when Akemi (singer-songwriter Masumi), the Japanese-born, Brazilian-raised heroine of Vicente Amorim’s “Yakuza Princess,” toasts in front of her late grandfather’s portrait, she follows American regulation and celebrates finally turning 21 as a major milestone. Such a seemingly trivial detail is indicative of the astounding incoherence and misguided international ambitions of this subpar action saga.
Gruesome dismemberment at a family party opens the film, adapted from the graphic novel “Samurai Shiro” by Danilo Beyruth. A young woman discovers she’s a crime family heiress in “Yakuza Princess,” a grimy action-thriller set in the neon-drenched streets of São Paulo’s Japanese district. Adapted from Danilo Beyruth’s graphic novel by Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim (“Motorrad), “Yakuza” delivers stylish shootouts and eye-catching swordplay but lacks the dynamic characters and story-telling panache required to lift it into the top grade. Starring Japanese American singer Masumi in her first feature role, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as an amnesiac assassin, this well produced item still packs enough punch to satisfy undemanding action fans and should perform respectably when released in U.S. theaters and on VOD on Sept. 3.

Based on Danilo Beyruth’s graphic novel Samurai Shiro, Yakuza Princess takes a familiar story and gives it a new twist by setting it in São Paulo Brazil. Why there? Because it’s the home to over 1.6 million Japanese and Brazilians of Japanese ancestry, the largest Japanese community outside of Japan. It’s also, like most Brazilian cities, overcrowded and rife with poverty, crime and corruption. What better place to set a film about the Yakuza?
Twenty years ago in Osaka Japan we watch as a family photo session turn into a massacre as a gunman opens fire, killing everyone. In Present day São Paulo Shiro wakes up in the hospital. Badly injured and with no memory of his past. His only possession an ancient katana.

Based on the graphic novel, Samurai Shirô, by Danilo Beyrouth, Yakuza Princess is like a bloody, violent, no holds barred episode of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? as the film follows a young woman on her journey to discover family truths. A film about loss, with themes of identity and belonging, and in a stylish, thrilling, and mysterious neo-noir package with strong elements from the jidaigeki genre and samurai history, Vicente Amorim’s Yakuza Princess treads in the footsteps of a dark legacy.
A home sits beneath the hills as a flag burns ahead. A family is met with bullets and steel, a dynasty of crime in Osaka is believed to be destroyed. But in present-day São Paulo, the family’s sole survivor embodies its fighting spirit as she trains in Kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art derived from the fighting methods of samurai. Akemi (singer-songwriter Masumi...

We enter 20 years into the past at a birthday party in Japan. This wealthy family spared no expense for the celebration but no amount of money can stop what’s coming. Swords are drawn, guns are fired, and soon enough everyone is dead—save a little girl taken from her mother’s lifeless arms. The assumption is that the victors have stolen her to nurture as their own before the inevitable discovery of her real heritage and subsequent desire for revenge. Learning the opposite to be true is thus a confusing hiccup once we fast-forward to present-day Brazil and find Akemi (Japanese singer-songwriter Masumi) mourning the death of the man who raised her: a man she calls Grandfather. How did she get there? We’ll find out soon enough.

Even before coronavirus, Brazil’s film sector was in extraordinary trouble, victim of a near 18-month freeze on government film funding under far-right Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
Now, many executives fear a radical shake out. “We have the incentive freeze, coronavirus, economic crisis, need for a new audiovisual law,” says Fabiano Gullane, one of Brazil’s biggest film-tv producers. The shingle has drama “Paloma,” from Marcelo Gomes, on tap.
“I fear for the future of medium-sized and small companies in Brazil,” he says. “They are near 100% dependent on [federal film agency] Ancine, [and] may well not have the cash-flow to survive the crisis.”
Adds producer Rodrigo Teixeira: “If we don’t have access to subsidies, production will stop, not only because of the pandemic but also the way Brazilian film financing is structured.”
The double crisis will push Brazilian companies into producing for TV as well as Brazil’s digital platforms.

Philippines director Dodo Dayao’s supernatural horror project “Dear Wormwood” claimed the top prize on Sunday at the Iffam Project Market, part of the ongoing International Film Festival & Awards Macao.
“Wormwood” is a tale of five women living together in a remote house in the forest, where a mystery illness strikes one of the quintet, followed by a series of cataclysmic events in the surrounding forest. Dayao says he originally conceived the film as a chamber piece about the end of the world, but has expanded it into something larger and more political. He calls it a: “Lovecraftian cosmic horror that seems like a tonal fit for our times.”
It boasts Malaysian director Bradley Liew as producer, alongside Patti Lupus and Bianca Balbuena. Prior to the Macao event it had secured roughly 15% of its estimated $525,000 budget. The winners shared a cash prize of $40,000.

As the only film entry to represent Brazil at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, Vicente Amorim’s Motorrad enjoyed much success as part of the fest’s Contemporary World Cinema slate earlier this month. Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of catching up with Amorim to discuss his supernaturally infused moto-horror project that follows a group of dirt bikers who head out to a remote region of Brazil, and are in turn hunted down by a sinister gang of motorcycle riders hell-bent on killing the travelers who have apparently entered an area in which they are not welcome.
During the interview, Amorim discussed the inspiration behind the story of Motorrad, striving to make an unusual horror movie in Brazil, the technical and physical challenges that he and his entire cast and crew were up against during production, and more.
Congratulations on the film, Vicente. How do you feel everything went over at Tiff this year?...

You won’t find a better locale for a film than Serra da Canastra in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its rocky landscapes and serene hills are gorgeous, their quiet solemnity a perfect contrast to the loud gas-guzzling motorcycles director Vicente Amorim has roaming their dirt paths in Motorrad. The only other man-made objects found are constructions out of flat stones — an isolated home or ancient wall that shouldn’t be where it’s found. The same stones line the shores of calm lakes with which to let off steam: the main reason this group of six riders have come so far from their home on a beautifully sunny day. But this desire to live free comes at a cost once a random quartet of stalkers arrives to kill them one by one.
The result is an interesting film steeped in ambiguity and metaphor that I’m not sure resonates without research into the filmmakers’ motivations.

After celebrating romance in Paris and New York, “Rio, I Love You” is the latest installment in the Cities of Love series. And despite featuring vignettes by acclaimed directors (Paolo Sorrentino, Fernando Meirelles) and actors (Harvey Keitel, Vincent Cassel, John Turturro), the third time in this case is not the charm. Austrian director Vicente Amorim is credited for “transitions,” but with 11 shorts packed into just less than two hours, it’s difficult to discern what constitutes a transition and what’s an actual story. A few characters repeatedly pop up during these interludes, but other characters wander into different shorts as.
