    Served with the with the 4th Ranger Battalion during World War II, taking part in six campaigns, 17 battles and four assault landings through North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. After the war he ran an unsuccessful campaign as the independent Democratic candidate for Mayor in Philadelphia.
