The Actors Who Were Almost Spider-Man
Image
It’s no secret that a certain wall-crawling hero was Stan Lee’s favorite Marvel creation, with the comic book legend having so much of a soft spot for Spider-Man that he modeled J. Jonah Jameson on a grumpier version of himself. Still, despite Spider-Man’s introduction in 1962, he didn’t get the Hollywood treatment until Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 40 years later in 2002.

And in the years before and after Tobey Maguire first swung across the New York City skyline, there’s been a galaxy of stars who’ve nearly donned the red and blue suit. So from those who’ve gone on to lead billion-dollar franchises of their own to others who’ve landed other roles in the Spider-Verse, here are 10 actors who nearly played Spider-Man.

Heath Ledger

The search for Tinsel Town’s Spider-Man went through several iterations, but when Raimi eventually took the reins, Tobey Maguire wasn’t his first choice.

Heath Ledger Channeled Showgirls And Fred Astaire For 10 Things I Hate About You
Image
"10 Things I Hate About You" has its fair share of timeless moments, one of its finest being when Heath Ledger's snazzy, uber-cool Patrick Verona crashes the school's soccer practice to sing and woo Julia Stiles' Kat Stratford. It's so over the top it's almost extraordinary. It's memorable in the most endearing way. Ledger exuded the charm and goofiness necessary to make this scene one of the most classic displays of romance in film over the decades.

When director Gil Junger and his team envisioned the scene, they were inspired by "Showgirls" and Fred Astaire and hoped that Ledger could capture the magnetism for which the late dancer was famous. It wasn't an easy task: Ledger was no dancer, but he did have copious amounts of charm.

An Unforgettable Rendition

In an interview with HuffPost for the film's 20th anniversary, filmmaker Gil Junger, actress Julia Stiles and the rest...

Heath Ledger Always Had Ambitions Beyond Being A Rom-Com Heartthrob
Image
The late great Heath Ledger is mostly remembered for his versatility onscreen. Never daring to shy away from a challenge, he jumped from genre to genre. Whether drama, fantasy, romantic comedy, he was always up for an adventure and, as a casual observer of his work, Ledger was one of those talents that seamlessly slipped into whatever role he took on. From "Brokeback Mountain," where he played the leading love interest to Jake Gyllenhaal's character, to playing a California surfer-type in "Lords of Dogtown," and most notably portraying one of the best Jokers in cinema history in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," he truly could do it all.

However, at the very beginning of his career when he was cast in the teen comedy, "10 Things I Hate About You," the future could have gone completely differently for Ledger. Cast as the contrarian rebellious bad boy Patrick Verona,...

I Am Heath Ledger Clip: Watch Late Actor Craft His Portrayal Of The Dark Knight’s Joker
A clip released from the recent I Am Heath Ledger documentary shows the late, great actor channeling his portrayal of the Joker for Christopher Nolan’s comic book opus, The Dark Knight.

Unveiled via JoBlo, the 9-minute promo features archived footage of Heath Ledger slipping into the iconic role, while there’s also an interview with Steve Alexander, Ledger’s former agent, about the time when he accepted that by-now famous gig as DC’s Clown Prince of Crime.

It’s a heartfelt and poignant tribute to the actor, who passed away almost a decade ago. Here, Alexander remembers the phone call he made to Heath Ledger about the vacant Joker role, and how he accepted it without a second’s hesitation.

I called Heath and I said, ‘This is what’s happening. They’re putting together the next Batman movie and the Joker’s going to be the villain and is that of interest?...

During his close to a decade at CAA, Alexander's clients included Heath Ledger, Jeff Bridges, Natalie Portman, Kim Basinger, Orlando Bloom. He subsequently left CAA to become a producer, working on films such as "Swimming with Sharks" and "Season of the Witch." In a statement, Alexander said he was happy to become an agent again. 'Glee' Star Heather Morris Is Indeed Considered for 'Buffy'
Heather Morris is apparently still circling "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Despite the fact that screenwriter Whit Anderson had debunked a previous news linking her to the reboot project of the 1992 film, the actress herself confirmed that she is being considered for the movie.

"They're considering me!" she told Access Hollywood when met at an event for Flirt cosmetics, for which Morris is a paid spokesperson, in Los Angeles on Thursday, Decemeber 16. She further shared, "I found out and I almost peed my pants 'cause I was so excited!"

Morris, who stars on Fox musical series "Glee", additionally admitted that she is a fan of the story's heroine Buffy, that she would take any role in the upcoming film. "If they make ['Buffy'] when ['Glee'] is on hiatus, I don't even care what I do. I can just run through the shot and do nothing - even if I'm not Buffy!" she declared.

Warner Bros. to Joss Whedon -- You Passed On "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Movie!
As "Buffy" fans, we all are in unison that in every generation, you can only have a chosen one to make a film version of the beloved TV show. And we all agreed that creator Joss Whedon is the chosen one.

Well, for weeks, the internet was buzzing about the supposed non-inclusion of creator Joss Whedon in the planned big-screen version from Warner Bros.

Now, studio insiders are saying that Whedon was the one who slayed "Buffy." We'll get to that in a minute. But first, let's recap the drama shall we?

Warner Bros. Announces Buffy Reboot
Another day, another remake/reboot emerges from the Hollywood-work, so ready or not here it comes! What’s the exploited target this time? A reboot of 1992’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie starring Kristy Swanson which launched the long running television series that gave the world Sarah Michelle Gellar from 1997-2003. Rumors have swirled since last year of Warner Bros’ interest in developing the project and today the studio officially announced its Joss Whedon-less plans to option the rights from original producers Fran Rubel Kazui and Kaz Kazui.

Not much is known at this point except the involvement of a Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and producer Steve Alexander under Atlas Entertainment, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison are on to produce also, and newcomer Whit Anderson as scriptwriter. As hinted, Joss Whedon (who is busy prepping for upcoming The Avengers film), the muse behind the original...

A "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Movie Without Creator Joss Whedon? Read His Reply!
The Buffyverse came to a halt with news that creator Joss Whedon would not be a part of the reboot. But if you're an avid Manny the Movie Guy reader, you know that back in May of last year, we posted a story pretty much saying that Whedon was not going to be involved (Check out "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" the Movie! But Wait, Creator Joss Whedon is Not Involved!)

Back then we said:

The new "Buffy" film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching "Star Trek."

Then we came across this press release confirming Whedon's non-involvement:

A "Buffy" movie reboot is happening — without Joss Whedon
Can we all just agree that this is a bad idea and call it a day? Warner Bros. Resurrect Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Movie
It started its life as a so-so movie with Donald Sutherland, Kristy Swanson, Rutger Hauer, Paul Reubens and saw early appearances by David Arquette and Ben Affleck. But Joss Whedon wasn’t happy with the film. At all. He took it to television and made one of the greatest telly shows ever. Fact.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer ended in 2004 and since then there’s been rumbles about a movie but it certainly wouldn’t see Sarah Michelle Gellar and the gang returning to their roles. No sir. Instead film rights holders Fran and Kaz Kuzui are relaunching the film through Warner Bros and today we got an official press release:

Warner Bros. Rebooting Buffy The Vampire Slayer
We've heard rumblings in the past about the possibility of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot, but today it's official! Warner Bros. Pictures and Atlas Entertainment are the studios developing the new project, and Batman Begins producer Charles Roven is the man spearheading the operation along with Steve Alexander, Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed).

Whit Anderson is attached to write the script, and she hasn't really done much prior to this film, but Roven had this to say about her involvement in the project,

Generally, I wouldn’t have said ‘Let’s revive this,’ but Whit’s take is pretty compelling and a lot of fun, and it’s interesting to see all of this re-imagined. This is a completely new reboot. Tone is extremely important and you want the audience to realize what is at stake and the peril is real,...

Warner Bros. Buys Rights to Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot; Whit Anderson to Pen the Script
In May 2009, we reported that Fran and Kaz Kuzui were going to re-launch Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a feature film but without the input of Joss Whedon (and after reading Buffy: Season Eight, that might be a good thing). Whit Anderson has been brought on to write the script. Atlas’ Charles Roven said of the new take “Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be.” Hit the jump for the full press release.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Gets A Writer, Joss Whedon Isn't Mentioned
Back in June there was a pretty heavy rumor going around that Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be getting a remake, with the possibility of either Vanessa Hudgens playing the role or Sarah Michelle Gellar bringing the character back. The rumor was squashed fairly quickly, with Hudgens denying ever hearing about the part and Gellar saying that she is not involved, and we haven't heard anything since. But that doesn't mean that folks haven't been hard at work trying to get it happening. Atlas Entertainment sent out a press release today announcing that not only will the franchise be rebooted, but that producers have already been lined up and a writer has been hired to script the project. According to the release, Charles Roven and Steve Alexander of Atlas will produce movie with Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and first-timer Whit Anderson will be taking care of...

Johnny Depp Considers Bigelow's "Frontier"
Johnny Depp is considering a role in Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming project "Sleeping Dogs" (aka. "Triple Frontier") according to Deadline New York.

The story centers around five men of varying age who all work in the Triple Frontier, the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge and a haven for organized crime and terrorist funding activities.

On Tuesday it was reported that Tom Hanks could also star in the project. Depp is interested in co-starring with Hanks, but his commitment to shoot "Dark Shadows" in February clashes with this film which begins shooting around the same time. There's hope however an arrangement will be made allowing Depp to shoot both projects simultaneously.

"The Hurt Locker" scribe Mark Boal has penned the script while Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander are set to produce.

Bigelow's "Triple Frontier" Shoots Next Year
Oscar-winning "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow will shoot her next feature film project "Triple Frontier" next year in the troubled region reports The Playlist.

Argentinean press have linked Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Denzel Washington for roles in the high-stakes ensemble project set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge. The area has proven a haven for organized crime and terrorist funding activities.

However that trio is thought to be mere speculation based on a piece from The New York Times of actors who recently met with 'Locker' scribe Mark Boal about future projects. One of those projects of Boal's is 'Frontier'.

Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander are set to produce the project for Paramount Pictures and Atlas Entertainment.

Interview: The Future of Voltron - Jeremy Corray
With budgets on the rise and total investments for studio pictures creeping toward the half a billion dollar mark, Hollywood needs a sure thing. So we hear terms like, “built-in audience” or “high-concept” or “ancillary revenues.” The summer movie schedule becomes a long list of sequels, prequels and remakes in the studios’ quest to recoup their investments. The success of the Transformer franchise has them scrambling. Cartoons from the 80’s are now the hot property. The studios are scouring the countryside for the next Transformers. I’m hearing names that I haven’t heard since I was eight, He-man, Thundercats, Go-Bots, Silverhawks and the Mighty Orbots. But one of the most popular cartoons from the 80’s is still out there, Voltron.

I remember the years 1984-1986 fondly as “the Voltron years.” I lived, breathed, ate and slept Voltron. I believe I was 10 when I discovered the company that owns Voltron,...

Voltron Movie Looks for New Writer
There are several things in Hollywood right now that are hot and popular topics: vampires, remakes, comic books and Robots! As far back as I can remember, robots have always been popular in movies. Going back to the late 1940’s and early 1950’s when the science fiction boom really took off, robots were always involved in one form or another. Just quickly off the top of my brain I can think of “The Robot” from Lost in Space, Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, Mechagodzilla, of course Transformers and now Voltron.

Back in July we reported that Atlas Entertainment along with producers Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander where teaming up to bring the robot quintet of Voltron to the screens everywhere. Then just like that *Poof*, no more information. Now last week, due to a new contract between United Talent Agency (UTA) and World Events Prods (and some pointing in...

Hurt Locker team re-upping on Triple Frontier
With the mounting success of The Hurt Locker behind them, director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal are collaborating again on a new project called Triple Frontier. The duo went to Paramount and pitched the studio on their idea, the exact nature of which is being kept a secret. We know that it's an action-adventure and that the story takes place in the shady borderzone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Easy access to two rivers and heavy vegitation make it a perfect hideaway for crimelords that don't want to attract curious onlookers.

Charles Roven (The Dark Knight), Alex Gartner (Get Smart) and Steve Alexander (Swimming With Sharks) will produce for Paramount while Bigelow and Boal will both receive executive producer credits.

Bigelow and Boal Re-Team for Triple Frontier
War correspondent turned screenwriter Mark Boal has re-team with his “Hurt Locker” director, the ridiculously hot Kathryn Bigelow for a new movie: “Triple Frontier”. Variety says the crime film will be set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge to form the titular “Triple Frontier”, an area that is difficult to monitor and thus has become a haven for organized crime and other characters of ill-intentions. It’s also the setting for “Elite Squad” director Jose Padilha’s upcoming terrorism movie “A Willing Patriot”. After working on the Iraq War-set “Hurt Locker” together, Boal and Bigelow re-teamed to pitch the story for “Triple Frontier” to the boys at Atlas Entertainment. The company’s Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander will produce the movie, one of many that Atlas has gotten their hands on in recent months, including “Season of...

Double Threat Bigelow & Boal Join 'Triple Frontier'
  • Let's just say they ain't trading coffee beans at this trading post. Almost guaranteed to be among the Oscar shortlist for their set in the Iraq, edge-of-your-seat thriller, the pairing of director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal will now go into dense, snake infested back country - a very particular spot on the globe. Variety reports that Bigelow will follow up The Hurt Locker with, Triple Frontier - a tale set in the notorious border zone between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge -- making "la triple frontera" difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime. Those that are monitoring this area are probably one of the high ranking intelligence branches in the U.S. I imagine Paramount Pictures, who are looking to set up shop next year, will allow for Boal to immerse himself in the arms trades and contraband culture

Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal Reteaming for Triple Frontier
Paramount is reteaming director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal on a new action/adventure project titled Triple Frontier. Bigelow and Boal last collaborated on The Hurt Locker (read my interview with them), one of this summer's best films about a bomb tech in Iraq. Triple Frontier is described as a high-stakes ensemble project that is set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil - making "la triple frontera" difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime. The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is developing through Atlas Entertainment with Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander. If you haven't seen The Hurt Locker yet, then I suggest you make it your mission to see it before the summer is over, it's that good. My hopes are that Triple Frontier is a lot like that, with very intense scenes and an incredibly realistic feel, but set in that border...
