For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived animated series “Gravedale High” (aka “Rick Moranis in Gravedale High“), which aired on NBC in 1990.
During the era of Saturday Morning Cartoons, there was always this idea by studios to build on a big star’s name by giving them an animated vehicle. We saw it with Mr. T, Chuck Norris, Macaulay Culkin, and Gary Coleman, as well as comedians like Louie Anderson and Howie Mandel. John Candy got (the still celebrated) “Camp Candy,” while his Sctv colleague Rick Moranis headlined his own animated horror comedy series for kids: “Gravedale High.”
Rick Moranis garnered immense fame and cult status in the eighties and nineties with an iconic comedy career that carried over into big films like Ghostbusters and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. As a means of marketing off his momentum, an animated series was developed by NBC...

The latest episode of "X-Men '97," called "Motendo/Lifedeath, Part 1," features the return of Mojo, a longtime X-Men villain who made his debut in "Longshot" #3, published in November of 1985. Mojo was a horrible, mutilated cybernetic monster with robotic spidery legs and a series of mechanical tubes sprouting from his body. He ruled a dimension called the Mojoverse, and oversaw one of the realm's most popular TV shows, "Mojovision," a gladiatorial show wherein superpowered beings from across multiple dimensions would be forced to fight to the death. Mojo lived for ratings and only cared about watching his numbers increase. He was modeled after the shallow TV executives and schmoozing moneymen who oversee most creative efforts in Hollywood.
Mojo made a memorable appearance in two episodes of "X-Men: The Animated Series" wherein he was enthusiastically played by Canadian voice actor Peter Wildman. In "Mojovision", he snarled and cackled as he forced the...

Created by Ton Ruegger and overseen by executive producer Steven Spielberg, "Tiny Toon Adventures" debuted in September of 1990, marking a sea change in mainstream TV animation. "Tiny Toons," tapping into 1990s trends toward self-awareness, regularly addressed its own status as a cartoon show, and the characters would frequently give side-eyes to the audience, extract scripts on camera, or even exit their animation cels to cause havoc for the animators. The show's regular obliteration of the fourth wall reflected — and guided — the prevailing winking sarcasm of the 1990s, making it (and I am not exaggerating) a vital and definitive text of the decade. It's no coincidence that it landed the same year as Richard Linklater's "Slacker."
"Tiny Toons" was striking, funny, and launched an entire series of notable Spielberg-backed 1990s cartoons like "Animaniacs," "Histeria!," and "Freakazoid!"
The characters on "Tiny Toons" were largely all distaff "youth" counterparts of established Looney Tunes characters.

In the 31st century of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's "Futurama," Christmas has evolved. Instead of fir trees, for instance, people decorate palm trees. Gift exchanges are still common, but families don't merely gather together to enjoy the warmth of the holiday season. They gather together because a rogue robotic Santa Claus, judging the entire world to be "naughty," annually flies around the Earth murdering anyone outdoors with guns and missiles. Families gather out of fear. Robot Santa was initially played by John Goodman, but the role was taken over by John Dimaggio after his first appearance.
Eventually joining Robot Santa in his holiday shenanigans was the Kwanzaa-Bot played by late rapper Coolio, and, with the release of "Bender's Big Score" in 2007, the Chanukah Zombie played by Mark Hamill. The machinations of the film's plot had all of Earth's denizens stranded at the North Pole of Neptune,...

Tiny Toons Looniversity is headed to Cartoon Network this fall. The animated series will also be released on the Max streaming service. The reboot follows the education of the next generation of toons -- Babs Bunny, Buster Bunny, Plucky Duck, Hamton J. Pig, and their classmates -- with classic Looney Tunes characters as their mentors.
Tiny Toons Looniversity is a sequel to the Tiny Toon Adventures series, which ran for three seasons and 98 episodes, from 1990 until 1992.
The casting for the new series has mainly been kept under wraps, but original voice actors Charlie Adler, Maurice Lamarche, and Cree Summer have said that they won't be reprising their roles. Candi Milo and Jeff Bergman have indicated that they will be back.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,“ the fondly remembered Nickelodeon animated series that aired from 1994 through 1997.
Every Nickelodeon fanatic has their period where they thought the network really hit their stride. For me, 1994 was their real peak of pure kids entertainment. It was a time where they’d tapped into a wonderful momentum with programming blocks like Saturday Night’s Snick, weekday morning’s Nick Jr., and excellent series like “Rugrats,” “All That,” “Legends of the Hidden Temple,” “The Secret World of Alex Mack,” and a whole lot more.
It was also the year that “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters” premiered.
Debuting officially on October 30th, 1994, the program was another of the many Klasky-Csupo produced animated shows that had dominated the airwaves for most of the Nickelodeon golden age. Breaking in to their tendency to spotlight the lesser explored corners of our society, “Aaahh!!! Real...

‘The Woman King’ headlines the African American Film Critics Association’s annual list of the top 10 films of the year. The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, has ensemble cast led by Viola Davis which includes Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Thuso Mbedu as the Agojie, an all-female army of fierce warriors. John Boyega also stars as King Ghezo.
“The best films of this year prove that diverse stories – the true and the fantastical – are not only important to the culture but are equally important to the movie-making business,” said Aafca president and co-founder Gil Robertson. “Black films which make an impact on our minds and hearts are also making a sizable impact at the box office. Harley heads home to reconnect with her roots in a charmingly mundane episode of Harley Quinn
Though the last outing of Harley Quinn might have been slightly lackluster, it turns out splitting up the crew of crims wasn't necessarily a bad thing. The 10th episode of animated series delves into the history of the (anti)heroine and looks at the impact that Harley and (her absence) has on those around her.
One of the funnest things about Harley Quinn is how much creative freedom the team behind it have been given, and they take full advantage of that here offering a completely new backstory that's as hilarious as it is completely and utterly ridiculous.
Harley's origin has long been one steeped in the baggage of being the Joker's girlfriend. Whether it's their toxic relationship or him driving her mad enough to fall in love with him we've...

Disney’s dormant film franchise, The Rocketeer, will be revived as an animated series, starring a female hero, on Disney Junior.
The Rocketeer franchise is ready for another liftoff more than a quarter of a century after it was grounded. While rumblings in recent years have teased a reboot movie and even a straight sequel to the original 1991 film, Disney’s family-friendly genre-mixing action brand will soon manifest as an animated series on the Mouse’s youth-aimed cable platform, Disney Junior.
Disney has announced that production on The Rocketeer animated series has already commenced. The franchise-reviving cartoon will – apropos to its platform – be aimed at young children and families, targeting a release in 2019. The story will draw inspiration from The Rocketeer comic book series of Dave Stevens, which adhered to the original film. However, the series will follow the rocket pack-powered exploits of a young female hero.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and their new Entertainment Lab in Burbank, CA. I chatted with Chris Young, Senior Vice President for the Entertainment Lab; Chris Savino, creator of The Loud House; and Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz, creator of Shimmer and Shine. I played around in their newly developed immersive and interactive Vr experience; sat in on a recording session for Shimmer and Shine; stopped in to say hi to Ciro Nieli, executive producer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and see his cool office; and viewed all kinds of creativity in progress during the studio tour.
And let me tell you: the experience was awesome.
As in, so awesome, I’m wondering how Alternate Me could get a job there. Because let’s be honest – there are office jobs that look like The Office, and then there are workplaces like Nickelodeon, which has slime stairs, a SpongeBob wall,...

It looks like all of Spike Lee's noisy tub-thumping for his recent successful Kickstarter campaign was not only good for him and his new movie but for the site itself. 47% of his backers had never visited the site before reports the site's Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler in a blog post entitled "The Truth About Spike Lee and Kickstarter" in which they defend celebrity crowdfunding campaigns. Lee and Zach Braff ignited controversy with their well-hyped Kickstarter fundraising at the same that their fans happily forked over the cash for them to make their movies. See the Kickstarter post below: Last week, “The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint” reached its funding goal thanks to more than 5,000 backers. While filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh cheered Spike Lee’s project, outlets like CNBC and Bloomberg accused him of abusing Kickstarter and taking money from other creators. A day after video surfaced of Zach Braff discussing why he loves Kickstarter and used it to finance his next project, the founders of the crowdfunding site posted a missive whose title asked a simple but controversial question: Who is Kickstarter for? Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler and Charles Adler note that their “mission is to help bring creative projects to life,” and they argue that goes for anyone. The trio deflected criticism aimed at their service — along with Braff and Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas — saying that high-profile projects merely “bring new backers to other projects.” Agree or not, the trio is in spin-control mode amid the backlash as crowdsourcing continues to be the latest cyber-Wild West. In response to all the criticism Kickstarter has been on the receiving end of, or found itself in the middle of, in recent months, thanks to successful multi-million dollar celebrity campaigns, the founders of the online crowd-funding service - Perry Chen, Yancey Strickler, and Charles Adler - penned an open letter to address your concerns - some of you anyway - in a post titled Who Is Kickstarter For? My 2 cents on the whole thing, in brief, goes something like this: if there are fans willing to give money to these "celebrity campaigns" (for lack of a better term), then who am I to discourage them from doing so. All I can do is contribute to those campaigns that I'm attracted to and...

A recent NPR story, “When a Kickstarter Campaign Fails, Does Anyone Get Their Money Back?”, raised the issue of failed crowdfunding campaigns and financial restitution to supporters. It’s a relevant topic as Kickstarter is increasingly acting as a pre-sale, customer-financing platform for sundry consumer, tech, and design goods. iPod wristwatches, Raw-shooting cameras, tripods and remotes, aquariums — many projects, some from creators with manufacturing backgrounds and some without, are bypassing the angel investor round and raising start-up capital directly from their customers. And while these are creative projects, they’re different from the short films and features we highlight on our curated Kickstarter page. Folks donating to these projects are pre-buying the product itself and will be justifiably angry if it doesn’t arrive. As for a film… well, it’s hard to put a timeline on art. Some projects happen and some don’t. Maybe that $25 you sent to...

There’s something really satisfying and simultaneously surreal about seeing the person behind a cartoon voice in the flesh. It’s why Hank Azaria always gets asked to do all of his Simpsons voices whenever he does the late night circuit. It’s a serious profession undertaken by seriously talented people, but it’s one that’s been shifted to video games as a result of growing popularity and the continued use of movie stars to do animated voices. So it’s a triumph to see a documentary celebrating and exploring that craft. I Know That Voice features a long list of the best in the business. Billy West, Tom Kenny, Andrea Romano, John Di Maggio, June Foray, Charlie Adler, Carlos Alazraqui and Tara Strong are just a few of the people who lent their voice (and the rest of themselves) to the doc. There are various cornerstones of a person’s childhood. Be it singular moments such as the first day of school, or much broader entities like your first favorite album or the first time you see a movie in theaters, nothing quite impacts a child quite like the things that they do during their free time.
Some may spend it playing sports or practicing an instrument; others may be studying or reading. One thing that everyone has in common are their favorite childhood cartoons. And now, thanks to Shout! Factory, one of the ‘90s most interesting cult cartoon classics has just made its way onto DVD.
Shout has released the first season of the classic cartoon, Rocko’s Modern Life, and while the supplements may be nonexistent; the quality is more than there.

When vampires start to become involved in the pulp world of the 30’s, with some good ol’ gangbuster action, there are only a few good choices producers can make to represent an era. Here, Bonnie and Clyde vs. Dracula provides the formula. In the solution, what the film delivers is an oddball mix of character development and weird science.
The idea seems sound. The gangster couple's exploits stirred the public imagination in a time that's been polarized as highly criminal. Certain gangsters ran amok. To include the undead implies that the influence of the mafia is indeed eternal. No matter how hard the law tries, they cannot be put down.
For most of the film, Bonnie (Tiffany Shepis) and Clyde (Trent Haaga) are simply hiding out from the law. In the shack they are in, they are slowly just learning about what's happening nearby. They don't...

Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron is one of those cartoon series you can only love if you grew up watching it as a kid. Otherwise, the formulaic storytelling and lack of interesting characters just doesn’t make for an enjoyable time. The stories get so repetitive that even those who watched the series when it originally aired in 1993 will have a hard time watching more than a few episodes.
The series is released as a 5-Disc DVD set as part of the Hanna-Barbera Classic Collection. It features the voice talents of Barry Gordon as Razor, Charles Adler as Chance Furlong, Gary Owens as Commander Ulysses Feral and Tress MacNeille as Callie Briggs. Jim Cummings (Winnie the Pooh, Gnomeo & Juliet, The Super Hero Squad Show), Mark Hamill (Batman: Arkham City), Candi Milo (Planet Sheen) and Lori Alan (90210, Family Guy) also perform guest roles.

Imagine the world's most prominent superheroes gathering together to face an alliance of the world's most cantankerous villains. Well, The Super Hero Squad Show Volume 1: Quest For The Infinity Sword! isn't quite what I'd imagine for that scenario, but I believe that was the intention of Marvel Animation. In Super Hero City where the Shs (Super Hero Squad) reside, the Hulk (Travis Willingham), Iron Man (Tom Kenny), Falcon (Alimi Ballard), Silver Surfer (Mikey Kelley), Thor (David Boat) and Wolverine (Steve Blum) are the supreme alliance of heroes, along with a little help from some other well known characters. Together, they guard the city from mayhem, all while trying to stop Dr. Doom (Charles Adler), and his own alliance of villains, from gathering infinity stones, which when pieced together hold the power to rule the universe.
This over-the-top, wacky series, which airs on Cartoon Network, is anything but a traditional comic spin-off.

There appears to be no shortage of marketing materials for this summer's most anticipated film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen from director (and my personal hero) Michael Bay. Paramount and Dreamworks have been working overtime splicing together clips and TV spots that integrate in small bits and pieces of the film so as to not give too much away, but also to keep us coming back for more. And it appears to be working. Today brings us a wide array of clips and TV spots, all full of footage that we've seen before -- more Shia Labeouf talking about how this isn't his war, more Megan Fox yelling "Sam!" and looking rather attractive and more Optimus Prime telling us that there's a lot that has been kept from Sam (and us, for that matter). So lets get into the ones that don't show much in the way of new footage. First...

Like many things in life (and perhaps even more in entertainment), Tiny Toon Adventures can only be fully understood when considered with what came before and after it. For example, how much more irritating were the Ewoks when you realized that they were paving the way for Jar Jar Binks? Can you watch Jack Nicholson’s original interpretation of the Joker without thinking of Heath Ledger’s more recent portrayal? All the same, Tiny Toons can really only be seen in retrospect as the link between the Muppet Babies of the late 1980s and the subsequent, far more engaging Animaniacs, which premiered in 1993. It should be evaluated on its own terms, but it can’t really be thought of or remembered any other way.
