The isolation of the Wild West, the ever-present danger of starvation, unforgiving terrain, and the rougher way of life in period settings make westerns well suited to the horror genre. Yet it’s not often that the two genres cross paths; the horror western is a niche subgenre compared to horror’s other genre pairings, like the horror-comedy.
Even the horror western’s more well known entries, like Near Dark or Ravenous, don’t appear on streaming often. Luckily, there are plenty of other entries in the horror western category on streaming, some overlooked, that capture the tension, isolation, and danger of the wild frontier.
Here’s where to stream five of them this week.

Remember Courtney Stodden? The teen bride who, at 16, married 51-year-old actor Doug Hutchison? The story, back in 2011, was a tabloid tornado of eyebrow-raising quotes and public appearances. When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. Here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

Frank Castle has always been a vicious vigilante, but he is at his most brutal in the 2008 film Punisher: War Zone. While the film went largely unwatched at the time of its release, it's now streaming for free 16 years later, providing Marvel fans who've never seen it an opportunity to check it out at no cost.
Currently, Punisher: War Zone is streaming on Pluto TV. A box office bomb, the film was not a big money-earner upon release. It grossed $10 million worldwide with a budget of around $35 million. Critics in 2008 were also not very kind with their reviews, and Punisher: War Zone has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 29%. Despite the disappointing reception, however, the film has since earned cult status with some fans considering it to be Marvel's most underrated movie ever.

The hit and miss nature of both early 2000s horror and the premise are quite obvious in today’s selection. While the original Willard and its sequel Ben are known entities, it’s not like they are the heaviest of hitters in terms of horror property. In fact, Willard is Exactly the type of property that I will always argue needs a remake. Well, needs is a strong word, but it lends itself better to a remake than something as perfect as the first Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Willard is a solid movie but underseen by today’s audience and would have maybe been more attractive to the audiences of 21 years ago who maybe grew up with the original. Sadly, that didn’t happen as it was arguably one of 2003’s biggest flops and that’s a huge bummer because not only is the movie fun with great, mostly practical effects,...

The 1999 Frank Darabont film "The Green Mile" has its fair share of truly despicable characters, but the grossest of them all has to be Sam Rockwell's "Wild Bill" Wharton, who assaults and abuses both corrections officers and his fellow inmates with abandon. In the film, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, Wild Bill is an inmate who comes to the death row facility where guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) works and makes life hell for everyone there, and Rockwell really put his all into it, portraying one of cinema's biggest slimeballs. He uses racist slurs, urinates on a guard's shoes, and spits a whole bunch of Moon Pie chocolate filling all over another guard. He also spits right in Paul's face, and it's nasty.

Frank Darabont's 1999 Oscar darling "The Green Mile," based on an inexplicably serialized novel by Stephen King, is set in 1935 Louisiana in the fictional Cold Mountain Penitentiary, specifically the prison's death row. The correctional officers are overseen by Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who struggles to retain his soul working such a dire job. The floor that leads to the prison's electric chair is painted green, earning it the titular nickname. Paul attempts to wrangle his officers' cruelty and retain what little hope he can, even after witnessing the state execute prisoner after prisoner. To make matters worse, he's suffering from a bladder infection.
The wildest prisoner on death row is William "Wild Bill" Wharton, played by the always amazing Sam Rockwell. Wharton was clearly mentally ill, and would frequently assault the officers, forcing him into a padded cell. He spat insults and racial epithets, flashing his yellowed teeth and horribly casual hate.

The X-Files is an iconic sci-fi show known for its unique blend of science fiction, horror, drama, and comedy. The show's standout episodes feature suspenseful plots, creepy villains, and the strong chemistry between stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Few TV shows have had the seismic impact of The X-Files – with its swirling mysteries, long-running conspiracies, and shocking monster-of-the-week episodes. Factor in the legendary roles of Mulder and Scully (the incredible David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) and you have the recipe for a multiple-decade-spanning phenomenon, that began on the small screen, moved to the big one (twice), and was revived for two additional series just when fans thought it was all over. Packed with alien encounters, supernatural shenanigans, and moments of very human horror, the show – spawned by Chris Carter – brought audiences into a world where you never quite knew what the next episode would bring.
30 years later, the impact of The X-Files hasn’t been diluted – and throughout its reign on big screens and small, Empire spoke to several of its key voices. Take a rifle through the X-Files Interview Archive…

From their windowless sub-basement office, FBI Agents Fox “Spooky” Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) began their assignment on The X-Files chasing little green men, or rather gray, as Mulder points out during the third episode, “Squeeze.” The “Pilot” episode was about alien experimentation. “Deep Throat” was about pilots who fly experimental craft, possibly designed using extraterrestrial technology. Season 1 episode 3 was more down to earth, while still out of this world.
According to both his DNA report and FBI profile, animal control officer Eugene Victor Tooms (Doug Hutchison) would be due to wake up some time in 2023, if only he’d have stepped off that mini-mall escalator. Fan favorite Tooms wasn’t only the first monster-of-the-week on The X-Files, but one of very few monsters who showed up on two different weeks. The fantasy drama The Green Mile is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name — here are all the differences between the book and the movie. Prolific horror writer Stephen King has written 65 fiction novels (with seven under the pen name "Richard Bachman"), five nonfiction books, and over 200 short stories. His works have been adapted to the big screen over 50 times, with many projects receiving rave reviews. While products like The Shining and The Stand have received multiple on-screen adaptations, The Green Mile has only been brought to the screen once, featuring the award-winning film stars Michael Clarke Duncan, Tom Hanks, and Sam Rockwell.
Bringing a novel from the page to the screen is no easy task, and it's common for there to be many changes made from the source material. Usually, narrative coherency, run time, and visual aesthetics are responsible for changes in cinematic adaptation. Unlike Stanley Kubrick's The Shining,...

There’s something inherently terrifying about subterranean horror. Getting trapped underground creates a tense survival scenario thanks to various dangers. But what about what’s lurking in the dark? Survival horror with carnivorous creatures provides fertile ground for fear.
Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) is back with the brand new underground monster movie The Lair, which comes to theaters and on Digital and VOD on October 28, 2022.
In The Lair, “Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is shot down over Afghanistan and finds refuge in an abandoned underground bunker where deadly man-made biological weapons – half human, half alien – are awakened.”
Jonathan Howard (Thor: The Dark World) and Jamie Bamber (“Battlestar Galactica”) also star.
Charlotte Kirk co-wrote the screenplay with Neil Marshall.
In anticipation of Marshall’s return to the subterranean creature feature, we look back at eight horror movies that feature underground monsters.

Frankel has recently making headlines for bashing the Kardashians for “irresponsible” filtering on social media posts, complaining that all that Photoshopping creates an unrealistic image that is “not fair to women.”

Stephen King may be a master of horror, but as stories like "The Body" (which later became "Stand By Me") and "The Green Mile" have shown, King is also a master of the heart. Adapted and directed by Frank Darabont, "The Green Mile" sees Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb, a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who bares witness to inexplicable events after a larger-than-life convict named John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) arrives at his facility to serve his final days. The film was a commercial success at the box office and nabbed four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Although "The Green Mile" is a period piece, no one on the cast or crew would ever declare the film to be historically accurate. For starters, there's the whole "is John Coffey actually Jesus Christ?" question to be answered, but on a smaller scale, the costuming is intentionally inaccurate.
