As of July 18, 2012, Vergara was the highest-earning woman in American television, taking in $19 million for the past 12 months on a list released by Forbes.com.

While living in Colombia, she used to watch the Spanish-dubbed version of Married... with Children (1987) featuring her co-star-to-be Ed O'Neill. After she landed the role as Ed's wife Gloria on Modern Family (2009), she was disappointed to learn that Ed spoke no Spanish.

Her older brother was murdered in a bungled kidnapping attempt in 1998. She later brought her son, mother and sister with her to live in the US.
