‘Man on the Inside’: Mike Schur Is Ready to Keep It Running Forever After Season 2 Got Approved by Netflix
Image
Michael Schur’s latest project, Man on the Inside, starring the ever-charming Ted Danson, is officially coming back for a second season, and fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. But before Netflix gave it the green light, the team behind the show had some very understandable hesitation. After all, Netflix has a bit of a reputation for ghosting its own shows just when viewers start getting emotionally invested.

And no one can’t blame them for being cautious, especially when one’s working with a high-concept comedy that’s not exactly built for instant algorithmic gratification. Shows like this take time to bloom. But even with the streaming red flags waving, there was one major reason to have hope, Michael Schur.

Known for turning offbeat premises into gold,, Schur reportedly had a roadmap laid out, not just for season one, but beyond. That kind of vision is rare,...

Back to the Future 3’s Ending Should Change Its Writer’s Mind for a 4th Movie
Image
It’s been well over 3 decades since Back to the Future III graced cinemas with one of Hollywood’s most celebrated sci-fi trilogies. But for many fans, the ending never really felt like a chapter closed. While the film summed up Doc Brown and Marty McFly’s arcs with a sappy flourish- time-traveling train and whatnot- the ending left more questions than answers for the viewers.

Teased characters, loopholes in the plot, and the secret lives of Doc’s children fueled years of speculation and, most importantly, a wish for continuation. Despite screenwriter Bob Gale’s repeated refusal to revisit the franchise and consider a fourth film, fans remain firm on their stance that the final film left a lot of loose ends. In fact, the third film’s ending should be a good reason for a sequel.

The ending of Back to the Future III left fans wanting more...

8 Times ‘SNL’ Cast Members Made Weirdly Unexpected Cameos in Music Videos
Image
It’s the Inverse Law of Entertainment: All musicians want to be comedians, and all comedians want to be musicians. Most comics aren’t blessed with musical talent, but some still get a taste by appearing in the videos of their favorite artists. Saturday Night Live cast members, probably thanks to their musical heroes guesting on the show, get more chances than most.

Here are eight times that SNL comedians randomly pop up in music videos by iconic artists…

1 Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler

The Beastie Boys’ “Make Some Noise” video is full of comedy cameos, including Seth Rogen, Jack Black, Rashida Jones, Will Arnett, Rainn Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson and David Cross. SNL is well represented as well with Ferrell as the future Ad-Rock, Rudolph as a lady hitting on Danny McBride and Poehler as a sneering bistro patron.

2 Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte Play

A24 Boards Jesse Eisenberg’s Theater Comedy; Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu & Bernadette Peters Added To Cast
Image
A24 has boarded Jesse Eisenberg’s next film behind the camera — the untitled musical comedy, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, on which we were first to report in November. Sources said this was a worldwide negative pickup, in the vein of the studio’s deal for Heretic, the horror hit from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

The film follows a shy woman (Moore) who is unexpectedly cast in a community theater musical production, going to extremes as she loses herself in the role. Production kicked off this month, with Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid), Havana Rose Liu (Lurker), and Bernadette Peters (Mozart in the Jungle) among the newcomers to the cast.

Fruit Tree’s Emma Stone, Dave McCary and Ali Herting will produce, with Topic Studios serving as executive producers. Eldar Isgandarov, Bonnie Milligan, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, and Maulik Pancholy round out the cast.

The project continues Eisenberg...

Road Show | The unlikely Sean Connery and Cher team-up that never happened
Image
In the early 1990s, Sean Connery and Cher almost appeared together in a romantic adventure called Road Show. Here’s why it never got made:

The ending of this story is that the movie never happened. Sean Connery and Cher never came together in a feature film from the director of Die Hard, and if you follow their respective IMDb pages, you’ll know their streams never crossed.

But for time in the early 1990s, it nearly happened. The project that nearly brought them together sounds as unlikely now as the cast list.

For over a decade, a script called Road Show was doing the rounds among Hollywood studios. A romantic action-adventure set in and around a ranch, it was in turn based on a book called The Last Cattle Drive, penned by Robert Day, and it moved onto the docket of director John McTiernan just after he’d enjoyed...

So does Mary Steenburgen, who is married in real life to Danson. And if you like it when real-life couples are also on the same series, whether they be in a couple or not, then you are going to love Season 2 of Danson's Netflix show.

That is because Steenburgen is set to make an appearance as a lead character in the second season. Each season, Danson's Charles will face a new criminal case that he will investigate. This is a comedy, though, so what viewers see isn't going to be some overly bloody murder. Think Murderville without the ad-lib.

Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg Saved Will Forte’s Career After ‘MacGruber’ Crashed and Burned
Image
Thankfully, Will Forte didn’t have to beg some fellow SNL alumni to help him get his career back on track after the failure of MacGruber. We all know what he gets like when he starts begging.

On paper, the 2010 feature film adaptation of a Lorne-Michaels-beloved SNL character had all of the makings of a blockbuster: MacGruber was a movie parody of a TV show that hadn’t been on the air in 18 years at the time of release, a YouTuber who had never shot anything much longer than “I’m on a Boat” wrote and directed the film and, most promisingly, MacGruber was an R-rated comedy that released on the exact same night as the fourth Shrek movie. MacGruber had everything going for it, but, on a $10 million budget, it somehow failed to even hit eight figures at the box office, and it landed near the top of the...

Netflix is dropping 8 movies this week
Image
While Netflix is constantly adding things to its vast library, the streamer also has to get rid of things too. One can assume that Netflix has many large servers to house all the movies and series that we get to see. But maybe those servers begin to lack room, so some things have to go.

This week is not too bad for having to say goodbye to some items. The 21st is by far the saddest day. Southpaw is a fantastic film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer who must turn his life around after a tragedy occurs. It is a bit too by note at times, but the acting makes up for any lag in the story.

Book Club also leaves on that day. There is also little doubt as to the acting ability of the cast. The film features Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen.

Neither the Police Nor an Eviction Threat Could Stop ‘Bulldozer,’ the Underdog Sundance Sitcom
Image
At some point during the filming of Bulldozer, law enforcement got word that the half-hour comedy pilot was filming without proper permits.

“They started trying to bust down the door,” recalls director Andrew Leeds of officers showing up to their shoot in the Valley, demanding the production clear out.

It was a potentially disastrous moment, given that Bulldozer was self-financed (no studio lawyers to intervene), and was largely made by calling in favors to people like Mary Steenburgen, who plays the mother to creator/star Joanna Leeds’ character. Producers held the door shut so they could finish filming, and tried to shield Steenburgen from the chaos, not wanting the show’s biggest name to feel she was on a production that didn’t have its shit together.

“I am literally chatting Mary up, looking over my shoulder at these cops going, ‘Oh my God, please don’t turn around,’” says executive producer Rhett Reese,...

Will Ferrell Explains Viral Beer-Drinking, Cig-Smoking Buddy The Elf Stunt: “I Just Like To Do Weird Things”
Image
Buddy the Elf has seen better days.

After going viral for reincarnating the title character from 2003’s Elf — as a beer-drinking and cigarette-smoking brooder, no less — Will Ferrell explained the thought and preparation process behind the stunt.

“Buddy the Elf got laid off, I think, from the North Pole,” the multi-hyphenate joked to Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce on a recent episode of their New Heights podcast.

The moment took place at a Dec. 29 hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, after a week of prep — simply for the vibes. Commentators joked that Ferrell’s demeanor and commitment to the bit made it unclear if he was actually enjoying the match-up or not. Meanwhile, those on social media had jokes aplenty, with film references deeming this version of Buddy the Elf a “South Pole elf” and saying he had finally been sacked for not meeting his gift-making quota.

Breaking Baz: Viola Davis & Ted Danson Give Masterclasses In Artistry At Special Golden Globe Awards Ceremony
Image
Those actors scurrying around at the festival in Palm Springs would have been better served witnessing masterclasses in artistry from Viola Davis and Ted Danson, the recipients of Golden Globes honors on Friday night.

Not only that, there was Mary Steenburgen and Meryl Streep, too.

And Carol Burnett and Jane Fonda!

Streep spoke of her first meeting with Davis. It was when the two women met at the table read for the screen version of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt.

Streep admitted that that she’d been a little out of sorts because playwright Tony Kushner had hailed Davis as his “favorite actor in the whole world.”

But then Streep sat opposite Davis at the read-through, with Amy Adams and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and saw exactly what Kushner had meant.

Image
Viola Davis and Ted Danson were presented with distinguished awards in a room full of their peers — which included Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Anthony Anderson and Babyface — at the Golden Globes’ Golden Gala, held at the Beverly Hilton on Friday. The event marked the first time the organization hosted a special ceremony for the recipients of its two historic honors, the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, which in the past have been presented during the show’s live telecast.

“I hope this inaugural evening of excellence is a night that all of us will remember for years to come,” said Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne in her opening remarks. “As we’ve been thinking about how to reinvent the Golden Globes over the past few years, we’ve embraced change and opened ourselves to fresh ideas. Viola Davis and Ted Danson Honored at Golden Globes’ Inaugural Golden Gala
Viola Davis at an event for Suicide Squad (2016)
It was the first Golden Globe Gala, held at the Beverly Hilton to honor Viola Davis and Ted Danson’s amazing careers. Both stars’ acceptance talks were clearly moving to the crowd.

Meryl Streep presented Viola Davis with the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award. Streep talked about the first time she saw Davis’s talent, at a table read for the 2008 movie Doubt, which won Davis her first Oscar nomination.

As Davis took the stage, tears ran down her face. “I feel like someone just set me on fire,” she said. To make her laugh, she told Streep in jest, “You’re just a great broad. ” You forgot that I went with you to the bathroom on the first day of practice. “I just wanted to smell you.”

Davis then talked about her amazing rise from poverty to fame in Hollywood. She was honest about her background, talking about a...

Viola Davis Gives an Emotional Speech for the Ages and Ted Danson Spreads the Love at the Golden Globes’ Inaugural Golden Gala
Image
The room was overflowing with emotion, gratitude and appreciation Friday night as the Golden Globe Awards’ inaugural Golden Gala paid tribute to two singular and beloved stars, Ted Danson and Viola Davis.

Danson took the audience at the Beverly Hilton through his journey as an actor as he accepted the Carol Burnett Award for his contributions to television over his long career. It all started when he was given the chance to bring the indelible character of Sam Malone to life on the NBC sitcom “Cheers,” which ran 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993. The creators and executive producers of that series, brothers Glen Charles and Les Charles, were in the audience.

“Everything I have in life acting-wise comes from you all,” Danson said to the Charles brothers. “I can’t thank you enough. You’re brilliant.”

The kudo was presented by his wife of more than 30 years, actor Mary Steenburgen, who was...

Viola Davis and Ted Danson deliver heartfelt speeches at Golden Globes event: ‘Little Viola is squealing’
Image
Viola Davis and Ted Danson got their golden moment a couple of days before the Golden Globes.

On Friday, the duo was feted in a lavish “Golden Gala” as this year’s recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award (Davis) and the Carol Burnett Award (Danson) for their respective career achievements in film and television. (Watch their full speeches below.) Traditionally these awards have been bestowed live during the annual Golden Globes broadcast, but that’s not the case this year; instead, Davis and Danson have been asked to present at Sunday’s ceremony on CBS.

Meryl Streep presented the award to Davis, exactly eight years after Davis honored her Doubt co-star with the same prestigious trophy. As for Danson, his wife Mary Steenburgen served as the presenter. The Cecil B. DeMille Award was first created in 1952 and salutes film achievement, while the Carol Burnett Award, which celebrates television talent,...
