The '90s Are Now A Period Piece — Here's The One Thing Movies Are Getting Wrong
Image
The year was 1999 and as congratulations for my group's project getting the highest score in the class, our teacher invited us to have lunch in her room for a week to watch a movie. We chose the Tim Allen/Sam Huntington flick "Jungle 2 Jungle," which includes a character played by a young Leelee Sobieski. As a 9-year-old, Sobieski was my first celebrity crush, and I accidentally mentioned that I had recently seen "Never Been Kissed" and that "she's so pretty" in the movie. One of the kids in my group was also the class bully, and he wasted no time pouncing on this slip-up. "Are you a d**e or something?" It wouldn't be the last time he'd call me that, nor would he be the only one to do it. After years of therapy — I'll fully admit that my years of hypersexual behavior with men in my teens...

'Game of Thrones' Fans Will Love This Underrated Jason Statham Action Fantasy
Image
Jason Statham rarely steps out of his comfort zone, but despite what detractors might say, his approach has worked incredibly well for him. In 2024, he is still one of the world’s most bankable stars, and he is unlikely to slow down anytime soon. 99% of Statham’s movies involve him playing a man with a gun with fists as additional weapons. He also sticks to live-action, with Gnomeo and Juliet being his only foray into the animation space.

Every Jason Statham Movie From The 2000s, Ranked
Image
The 2000s were an incredible time for Jason Statham; having only previously starred in Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998, he hit the 2000s with a vengeance. Not following the typical acting career path, with more minor, supportive roles to build up a profile, Statham went in at the deep end, basically leading action films as the star since his first years. Known for his tough-guy persona, fighting skills, ripped physique, and witty delivery, he seemed destined to be an action star.

Statham has starred in a multitude of different genres, from martial arts films, gangster comedy dramas, and tenacious heist thrillers. Over the 2000s, his performances have continued to transcend the screen, delivering some of his best scenes that propelled him into pop culture; whether portraying the driver in The Transporter or a small-time promoter in Snatch, his roles always stand out from the norm. His unique film choices,...

Jason Stathams Lowest Rated Movie Is as Bad as You Think
Image
Action superstar and Hollywood heavy hitter Jason Statham may be one of the silver screen's most bankable actors, but even he isn't immune to taking on questionable projects and roles. The charismatic performer is one of the film industry's most alluring stars, but back in 2007, Statham headlined one of the cinema's biggest box office blunders and most critically-panned flicks: the fantasy flick In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, which was an adaptation of the popular video game series.

In the notorious movie, Statham plays a man on a mission as he sets out to get revenge against the evil forces that killed his beloved son and kidnapped his wife, a plot that sounds right up the actor's alley but also takes place in a fantasy world in a medieval kingdom where nefarious creatures run rampant. The adaptation tanked upon its worldwide release and holds just a 4% Rotten Tomatoes score,...

Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and Paul Walker in Fast & Furious (2009)
Paul Walker's Underrated Horror Thriller Lands at New Streaming Home
Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and Paul Walker in Fast & Furious (2009)
Though he's primarily recognized for his Fast & Furious fame, late actor Paul Walker has some hidden gems apart from the action franchise on his CV. One of his more underrated movies, Joy Ride, is set to journey onto a new streaming service very soon.

Hulu confirmed that Joy Ride will premiere on its platform on Oct. 1. The 20th Century Fox horror flick, which also stars Steve Zach, Leelee Sobieski, Jessica Bowman and Ted Levine, was originally released in theaters on Oct. 5, 2001.

Related Documentary Details Why Paul Walker Declined a Lucrative Deal to Play Superman

A recently aired documentary reveals the reasons why Fast & Furious star Paul Walker was never meant to play Superman.

Co-written and produced by J.J. Abrams, Joy Ride chronicles three young people on a road trip who talk with a trucker on their Cb radio. However, a seemingly innocuous interaction turns into a fight for...

Jason Statham's Worst Movie Has The Best Cast He Ever Worked With Including The Expendables
Image
Jason Statham is no stranger to working with some seriously talented people, but perhaps the most impressive cast he's ever featured in bizarrely came in his worst-ever movie. With a track record in action franchises like The Fast and the Furious and The Expendables, Statham has arguably forged his reputation by augmenting ensembles. And yet, while these movies have become some of Statham's best-known releases, one oft-forgotten film still reigns supreme as the pinnacle of Jason Statham's screen collaborations.

It speaks to Statham's strengths as a performer that he is capable of shining both as a solo lead and a supporting player in a sprawling cast. Even his early career before he became an action superstar was defined by performances in projects like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch: both movies that rely on extensive personnel and surprise cameos to succeed. And yet, even with this history,...

Five Road Trip Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Summer is winding to a close, though the blistering sun has not yet received the memo. That means the final days of vacationing or summer road trips are in order. Of course, horror has taught us the myriad of ways that the open road can induce abject terror and stress; flat tires are the least of your summer worries in horror.

Films like The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Splinter highlight how car troubles, creepy rest stops, and seedy motels don’t compare to humanity’s worst- human or otherwise- prowling the highways.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to road trip horror movies. These five titles exploit our travel anxieties by pitting their protagonists against vampires, cannibals, psychopaths, and the devil himself over vast stretches of highway.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Eyes Wide Shut’s Ending with Nicole Kidman Is Darker Than You Remember
Image
At the end of Eyes Wide Shut, Dr. Bill Harford and his wife Alice come together in that most normative of spaces: an Fao Schwarz toy store. As they watch their daughter look at potential presents, Bill feebly tries to explain his sexual sojourn through the city we just watched, one prompted by Alice’s confession of lust for a random sailor. Upon the completion of Bill’s story, Alice declares, “There is something we need to do as soon as possible.” What’s that, her husband and the audience asks? Fuck.”

The camera holds on her face for a beat or two and then cuts to black. End of movie.

Between Nicole Kidman’s percussive line delivery, Tom Cruise’s bewildered expression, and the sudden cut to credits, Alice’s statement feels definitive. Yet, like every other part of Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick’s final film, the word is both precise and beguiling,...

Deep Impact's Sci-Fi Premise Was More Science Than Fiction
Image
It's practically impossible to talk about Mimi Leder's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Deep Impact" without also cursorily mentioning Michael Bay's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Armageddon." Leder's film was released on May 8, and was presented as a stern and realistic view of what might happen to the Earth if a massive, Mount Everest-sized comet struck. Bay's film was released on July 1, and presented a much more cartoony, ultra-macho version of the same story, this time with a comet the size of Texas. The former was about somber politicians planning for the worst, the latter was about muscular, blue-collar miners flying into space. Curiously, both films were hits; "Deep Impact" made $350 million on a budget of $80 million, and "Armageddon" made over $550 million on a budget of $140 million.

Of the two, "Deep Impact" is the "classy" choice, featuring a wide ensemble of recognizable actors, each doing their best to prepare for -- and...

Drew Barrymore Says Studio Told Her ‘You’re Looking Too Unattractive’ in ‘Never Been Kissed’ and ‘It’s Too Far’: ‘I Was Forced to Tone It Down’
Image
Drew Barrymore revealed on a recent episode of her daytime talk show that she was told to dial her performance back during the making of the 1999 romantic comedy “Never Been Kissed.” Barrymore starred in the film as Josie, an insecure copy editor who has never had a real relationship. The movie was notable for Barrymore as it marked the first official title under her Flower Films production banner.

“At that time, people were very weary of actors being producers,” Barrymore said. “A lot of it wasn’t necessarily working, and it didn’t mean because you were an actor, you knew how to produce the film. And it was about the economics. So if you didn’t make the film work, and you produced it as an actor, you are likely to not be able to do it again.”

“I was very stressed throughout the movie,” she continued. “I was...

Drew Barrymore Was Told To “Tone It Down” In ‘Never Been Kissed’: “You’re Just Looking Too Unattractive”
Image
Drew Barrymore recalls filming Never Been Kissed and being asked to “tone it down” because her character, Josie Grossie, was deemed “too unattractive.”

In a recent episode of her talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress talked about her experience while filming the 1999 romantic comedy, the first one from her production company Flower Films.

“At that time, people were very weary of actors being producers,” Barrymore told her talk show guests Christine Taylor and David Lascher. “A lot of it wasn’t necessarily working, and it didn’t mean because you were an actor, you knew how to produce the film. And it was about the economics. So if you didn’t make the film work, and you produced it as an actor, you are likely to not be able to do it again.”

Joy Ride: The Thriller That Dared Not to Reveal Its Killer's Face
Image
Joy Ride cleverly taps into post-9/11 fear with a faceless killer, offering a unique twist on the classic thriller genre. The film's originality and suspense make it a fantastic noir thriller that still holds up over 20 years later. Steve Zahn and Paul Walker deliver great performances in a film that explores the horrors of domestic, American, and faceless threats.

Just as the summer of 2001 ended, an event occurred in the United States that would change the country, the entire world, and all the generations that lived through it. The dynamics underwent a radical shift, bringing songs, movies, and TV shows under scrutiny. If they dared show terrorism, anger, and what existed before Ground Zero, then they’d have to be changed in favor of the sensibility of an entire nation that would grieve for many years.

The fear was felt everywhere. Osama bin Laden’s face was in every corner of the media.

Why Nicolas Cage's The Wicker Man Failed According to Its Director
Image
Filmmaker Neil Labute shares his thoughts on why he feels The Wicker Man remake failed. Despite Labute's efforts, 2006's The Wicker Man couldn't even recoup its budget, earning only $35.8 million worldwide. Establishing the right tone for The Wicker Man remake proved tricky, trying to balance the horror and comedic elements.

Nicolas Cage’s remake of The Wicker Man was roasted alive by audiences and critics during its release in 2006, and director Neil Labute has a few thoughts on why. For many, Cage's film didn't come close to capturing the atmosphere of the wild-haired Christopher Lee and his followers who chanted as Edward Woodward's character is sacrificed in the 1973 original. Playwright and famed filmmaker Labute was tasked with helming the reimagining of the dark and tense story, and the writer/director offered up his thoughts on why his horror movie ended up failing in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb.

Joy Ride (2001) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering Joy Ride was Written, Edited, and Narrated by Kier Gomes, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Prank calls are like a right of passage for children of the 80s and 90s. The ritual of hanging out at a friend’s house on a Saturday night when you’re a kid usually included at least one or two calls to unsuspecting households with immature and entertaining interactions. Harmless enough? Well… Mostly. What if the person you prank called turned out to be a sadistic serial killer with limited patience for practical jokes, and even less patience for unruly young people who waste his time and give him the dreaded… blue balls. That is the premise for 2001’s Joy Ride (watch it Here) – a horror thriller about a pair of brothers and their childhood friend who are making their way...

‘The Glass House’ Is a Half Empty But Still Fun Teen Thriller [Young Blood]
Image
Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.

In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Star Ethan Peck Nearly Played Captain America In The MCU
Image
Ethan Peck's first professional acting credit came in 1995 with an appearance on the short-lived ABC crime drama "Charlie Grace" with Mark Harmon and Leelee Sobieski. He was nine. At age 13, he appeared in the Olson Twins vehicle "Passport to Paris" before landing a notable gig as the young Kelso in flashback scenes on "That '70s Show." This would only be the first time Peck would play a "legacy" character. In addition to Kelso, Peck inherited the role of Patrick Verona from Heath Ledger in the TV adaptation of "10 Things I Hate About You."

The most notable legacy character in Peck's career to date has, of course, been Spock from "Star Trek," a role he inherited from Leonard Nimoy. Peck's version of Spock fills out the character's backstory for the decade immediately prior to the events of the original series, wherein audiences learned that he had a long lost...

A Woman's Mind Unravels in Bight Hill Road [Review]
Canadian director Robert Cuffley's credits over the years have included a wide variety of projects from dramas and comedies to thrillers but they all have one thing in common. They all feature outstanding performances from actors on the verge of a breakout: Katharine Isabelle, Leelee Sobieski, Amanda Crew and most recently Siobhan Williams in Bright Hill Road.

Cuffley's first foray into horror isn't full of jump-scares or gore, the type of horror movie one might expect from a filmmaker looking to make a short-lived splash. Instead, the movie is clearly the work of a filmmaker who values story, character, and focuses on performance to really get at the heart of the thing: in this case, a woman on the verge of a mental breakdown.

‘The Last Film Festival’ Clip: Dennis Hopper’s Final Film Asks ‘Why Are You in Movies?’
Jacqueline Bisset, Dennis Hopper, JoBeth Williams, Leelee Sobieski, Chris Kattan, and Donnell Rawlings in The Last Film Festival (2016)
Dennis Hopper may have passed away six years ago, but his fans can still catch him in his last movie, “The Last Film Festival.” IndieWire has an exclusive new clip from the comedy which features Hopper asking a junior agent (Joseph Cross) why he’s in the movie biz, since for him it was because of Sophia Loren.

Directed by Linda Yellen, the film follows Nick Twain (Hopper), a failing Hollywood producer whose latest movie has been rejected by every film festival in the world except for one. When an obscure festival is the last hope for Twain and his disaster of a movie, he does anything to get his picture distributed, including manipulating his dysfunctional cast into attending. Jacqueline Bisset, Chris Kattan, JoBeth Williams and Leelee Sobieski co-star.

Rihanna Goes Glam at Dior's Paris Fashion Week Show -- But Wtf Is Leelee Sobieski Wearing?!
Pretty in pink! Rihanna stole the spotlight at Dior's Spring/Summer 2016 runway show on Friday at Paris Fashion Week, donning an oversized pink statement coat from the designer's Fall 2015 collection. She completed her eye-catching look with black leather thigh-high boots, a tousled updo and pink eyeshadow and lipstick. We have to say -- the singer's hair and makeup have never looks better! While RiRi looked pretty in pastel, Leelee Sobieski raised some eyebrows when she showed up looking like Pope Frances. Sporting a full-length white tent dress with long sleeves and a high collar, the actress was completely covered up from head to toe. She even added the Pontiff's signature lariat necklace to her all-white ensemble! Another Dior darling to attend the star-studded soiree was Emilia Clarke, who kept it classic in a long-sleeved black mini, which featured a plunging neckline and a hi-low design. Dennis Hopper’s final film, The Last Film Festival, is nearly complete -- but it needs help your help.

Five years after the actor died of prostate cancer at the age of 74, Emmy award-winning director Linda Yellen is turning to Kickstarter to raise $90,000 -- they have raised over $47,000 with 17 days to go -- in order to put the final edits on the film and release it publicly to fans.

News: TLC Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Final Album

But for Yellen and the film’s cast, including Jacqueline Bisset, Katrina Bowden, Chris Kattan, Leelee Sobieski, and Donnell Rawlings, it’s more than a film. It’s about Hopper’s legacy. “Dennis was such a maverick and independent spirit,” Yellen tells ETonline and this Kickstarter campaign is in keeping with that mentality.

While there was never any hesitation about releasing The Last Film Festival, it was about doing it correctly. Following his death, Yellen says that...

Dennis Hopper in Crash (2008)
Dennis Hopper’s final film seeks closure through Kickstarter
Dennis Hopper in Crash (2008)
Producers of the last film to feature Hollywood icon Dennis Hopper are turning to Kickstarter to complete the film.

Filming on comedy The Last Film Festival came to a halt four years ago when Easy Rider star Hopper died from cancer aged 74.

The production is now looking to raise $90,000 to complete post-production and assist distribution on the feature, in which Hopper stars as a big-shot Hollywood producer whose recent flop is accepted in just one film festival – the disastrously executed O’Hi Film Festival.

The cast also includes Jacqueline Bisset, Joseph Cross, JoBeth Williams, Katrina Bowden, Chris Kattan, Leelee Sobieski, and Donnell Rawlings.

The picture was written specifically for Hopper by director Linda Yellen and her writing partner Michael Leeds, who pitched the idea to the star after meeting at Sundance. Yellen produces with Bob Jorissen.

Director-producer Yellen said: “May 2015 will mark the fifth anniversary of Hopper’s death, and we wanted to release the movie to coincide...

15 Years Later: Looking Back on Vanity Fair‘s Young Hollywood
In Hollywood, there’s always a battle for attention. The legends and icons are forced to fend off the pretty young things that pop up every year. They transform into talented, award-winning actors who take over both the big and small screen. They include the likes of Jonah Hill, Carey Mulligan, Emma Watson and Shailene Woodley, all of who have been featured in Vanity Fair’s Young Hollywood series.

While there have been a number of hits featured in the magazine of the years, there have also been a number of misses — Vinessa Shaw and Sarah Wynter anyone? Like them, we want to know where they are all now.

Starting with 1999 — the unofficial “Young Hollywood” issue — we look back on the hottest, youngest, brightest, freshest faces of the past 15 years.

Rubber, Road, Brains and Souls: 5 Killer Car Flicks That Will Never Be Forgotten
Inanimate objects often wriggle their way into horror films. We’ve seen porcelain dolls slaughter naïve victims. We’ve seen video game characters decimate the unsuspecting. And, perhaps the most lifeless menace to brutalize fleeing victims, the evil vehicle.

Four wheels (in most cases) designed to do nothing but obliterate mankind. It’s a petrifying thought when you consider all the deranged drivers behind the wheel these days. Really, how many fatal road rage incidents occur on an annual basis?

And that’s precisely the reason that killer car movies are infinitely more frightening than any other pic focused in on insensible, pulseless antagonists. We know that cars, trucks and motorcycles (this one doesn’t earn mention in this particular article, but look into Rage, a really entertaining indie moto-flick) can lead to instantaneous expiration. We understand that, be it a legitimate malfunction, a drunken fool or a crazed driver behind the wheel,...

15 Years Later: 9 Stars You Never Realized Are In Never Been Kissed
View Photo Gallery The year was 1999 and anything could happen, like, Drew Barrymore going back to high school as an undercover reporter. In Never Been Kissed, Barrymore played a Chicago copy editor looking for her first big break when she decides to go undercover as a high school senior. The comedy blurred the lines between the teen films (Varsity Blues, She’s All That, 10 Things I Hate About You) that were popular at the time time and the adult world of RomComs that Barrymore fans were used to. The film turned out to be a box office success and introduced fans to a cast of fresh young actors. While Leelee Sobieski, Michael Vartan and David Arquette were the stars, it was James Franco, Octavia Spencer and John C. Reilly among others who turned out be the big gets. On the 15th anniversary we look back on our favorite stars who...

Protecting Their Precious Bodily Fluids: Male Impotence in Kubrick’s Filmography
It’s both perfectly fitting and a darkly wry punchline that the last word in Stanley Kubrick’s last film is “fuck,” utilized in its most literal definition. The word is spoken, in both direct and slightly imploring fashion, by Alice Harford (Nicole Kidman) to her husband Bill (Tom Cruise) at the end of the still slightly underappreciated Eyes Wide Shut. Bill’s nocturnal journey into an unfamiliar world of group sex and general deviancy is one of missed opportunities and denied possibilities; he is surrounded by and beckoned into various couplings, and capitalizes on none of them. This weakness of the modern man is a recurrent theme in Kubrick’s filmography, from Paths of Glory to Eyes Wide Shut, released posthumously in the summer of 1999. Kubrick, who died 15 years ago today, was often categorized as a cold and distant filmmaker, always putting his characters at an emotional remove; this...
