How to Produce a Hit TV Show and Save the Environment at the Same Time
Image
When actress Wendie Malick joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” she was attentive, as always, to the sustainability standards on set. “If you’re not part of the original cast, it’s harder to come on and start telling people what to do,” Malick, who plays Harrison Ford’s neurologist and love interest, told TheWrap. “Happily, there wasn’t much left for them to do.”

Now shooting the third season of the therapy-themed comedy, Malick has been concerned about sustainability in entertainment production for decades. Since 200o, she has been on the executive board of directors for the Environmental Media Association (Ema), a nonprofit whose Green Seal certification stamps Hollywood projects for their eco-conscious methods, spanning from energy efficiency to the use of recyclables.

Wtf Happened to Road Trip – Does the Todd Phillips-directed teen sex comedy still have gas?
Image
Every once in a while, a movie makes so much money that it totally shakes up the film industry. This instance is especially true when a genre many considered dead and buried comes along and makes some serious cash. This rarity happened in a big way back in 1999 when American Pie, a movie that cost $11 million, made $235 million worldwide. Think about it – the biggest star in the film was Eugene Levy. More than that – it was a teen sex comedy. That genre played out in the early eighties when Porky’s was such a big hit that every studio decided to make a sex comedy, and pretty much all of them tanked – especially the multiple Porky‘s sequels. Teen sex comedies were replaced by John Hughes’s brand of more thoughtful teen comedies, only for that genre to fall off as well. A year before, Sony made a John Hughes-style teen comedy,...

Wtf Happened to Crank?
Image
As far as modern action heroes go, one of the most enduring has certainly been Jason Statham, who’s headlined a slew of modestly budgeted action flicks that have made him one of the few genre staples left in the game. His career has been interesting, with him alternating smaller-scaled action flicks with bigger, tentpole event films, such as the Fast & Furious films and The Meg 1 & 2. Yet, the movie that established his persona wasn’t the Transporter films or any of his Guy Ritchie movies. Nope, instead, it was a small-scale but ambitious quasi-remake of the film noir classic D.O.A that put him on the map in a big way. That’s right, folks, it’s time to figure out Wtf Happened to Crank!

Jump back to 1997, when a young English director named Guy Ritchie released a little film called Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which caused a sensation.

Jason Statham's 'Crank' Sequel Is Better than the First One
Image
While the age-old adage "less is more" is sound filmmaking advice, the opposite applies to Jason Statham's relentless action movies. A case in point is Crank 2: High Voltage, a balls-to-the-wall action sequel that goes so far over the top that it dwarfs the absurdity of the original to leave a big, fat grin etched on the faces of hardcore Statham fanatics. Critics were also impressed, giving Crank 2 slightly better reviews than its predecessor.

Boasting a wild premise that forces Statham's Chev Chelios into a ticking-clock health scenario, Crank 2's high-voltage electricity derives from the extreme plot, flagrant fight scenes, hyper-violence, morbid humor, kinetic camerawork, Statham's breathless stunt work, and more. With the film recently celebrating its 15th anniversary, it's time to hook up the jumper cables and bring Crank 2: High Voltage back to life.

Palisades Fire: High School Featured in Several Hollywood Movies Burned Down
Image
The Palisades Fire has engulfed Palisades Charter High School, a school that has long been a popular location for Hollywood productions.

NBC Los Angeles reported on Tuesday night that the fire spread through several structures at the Pchs campus, and had all but destroyed the adjacent Theater Palisades.

Earlier in the day, Pchs posted a note on its website that the school was closed due to the Palisades Fire.

As the fires continued to rage, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency, and nearly 30,000 people have been ordered to evacuate.

Pchs is a popular location for Hollywood productions. The school has featured prominently in films, most notably Brian De Palma’s 1976 horror classic Carrie, where it was dubbed Bates High School in the movie. The school also featured heavily in Danny Steinmann’s 1984 teen vigilante movie Savage Streets, the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday, the Teen Wolf TV series,...

The Butterfly Effect's 4 Endings Explained & Which Is Better
Image
The sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect follows Evan’s (Ashton Kutcher) travels through time and space in an effort to change his and his crush Kayleigh’s (Amy Smart) lives, and as such, it was given four different endings. Written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, The Butterfly Effect is the story of Evan, a college student with a turbulent past who experiences blackouts and memory loss since childhood. In his 20s, Evan discovers he can travel back in time to specific moments with his adult mind inhabiting his younger body.

Evan begins to use this power to change his and his friends' lives, especially that of Kayleigh, who went through a lot of childhood trauma. However, changing the past also changes the future/present, and in the third act of The Butterfly Effect, Evan ends up in a mental hospital. Evan now has irreversible brain damage...

John Cena's Worst Early Movie 'The Reunion' is Streaming on Tubi
Image
John Cena has made some good movies, and he has made some absolute dross. One of the latter is the 2011 movie The Reunion, which has found a surprising new audience since landing on Tubi this month. The film falls very much into the category that made many question whether Cena could make it as an actor, with the wrestler-turned-actor's attempt to deliver a nuanced performance falling mostly flat. Cena plays Sam, a suspended cop who gets caught up in a dangerous scheme while attempting to claim the inheritance left to him and his siblings by their late father. To many, the nuance was very much lost, and this was not the John Cena that would end up leading several huge franchise projects a decade later.

When it came out, The Reunion was one of Cena’s first movies, and, as would be pointed out by several critics, it was one of several critical bombs.

Ryan Reynolds & Anna Faris' Wildly Underrated Christmas Comedy 'Just Friends' Is a Streaming Hit
Image
Sometimes, a movie can take a little while to catch on, which was the case with the 2005 Christmas romantic comedy Just Friends. Although the film was only a moderate hit upon release, the Ryan Reynolds-led comedy has gained traction over the years as a bit of a cult classic and a part of the Christmas movie rotation for some fans. This appears to have been the case this year as Just Friends is making strides on streaming as Christmas approaches.

Just Friends is currently ranked tenth on Hulu's Top 10 films. It would make sense for the movie to rise in popularity on streaming because fans probably watch many Christmas movies before the big holiday. The movie offers an easygoing viewing experience and is suitably romantic and funny. It features a talented ensemble cast that makes the most of the screenplay, written by Adam 'Tex' Davis.

The Director's Cut of This Disturbing 20-Year-Old Thriller Went Too Far
Image
This article discusses suicide, sexual violence, and reproductive trauma.

For fans of Ashton Kutcher, who got to know the wholesome heartthrob through lighthearted fare like That '70s Show and Dude, Where's My Car?, his 2004 thriller The Butterfly Effect came as a shock. In this gruesome horror film, Kutcher has the ability to change his past — but every choice he makes begets an even worse outcome. However dark and disturbing the film is, though, the director's cut was too extreme even for the horror-friendly distributor New Line Cinema.

The version preferred by co-writers and directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber runs only around seven minutes longer than the theatrical cut, and most of that time is devoted to the radically different ending. Though the alternate conclusion was judged to be in poor taste — and understandably so — it does make a bit more sense out of the complicated and occasionally confusing Butterfly Effect.

Ryan Reynolds Parodies Netflix's Holiday Hit 'Hot Frosty' For Aviation Gin
Image
Ryan Reynolds is bringing his own (grim) twist to the holiday season with a hilarious spoof of Netflix's hit film, Hot Frosty. In a new ad for his Aviation Gin, Reynolds voices a muscular snowman who bears a striking resemblance to himself. The commercial playfully parodies the Netflix holiday rom-com that follows a widow who brings a handsome snowman to life. While Hot Frosty focuses on said snowman finding love, Reynolds' ad takes a more comedic approach and sees a different outcome for its snowman. This time, the protagonist isn't interested in romance with a chiseled snowman, but rather a bottle of gin.

Reynolds and his Maximum Effort banner have a knack for creating clever ads for his gin brand. Last year, they delivered two memorable holiday ads. For Just Friendsgiving, Reynolds reunited with his Just Friends co-star Amy Smart; for the brand's Christmas ad, Gingle Bells, Reynolds taps...

10 Best Live-Action DC Shows, Ranked
Image
DC has produced many high-quality TV shows over the years, with key aspects that make many stand out, and the best of them offer variety for those looking for live-action DC series. While Marvel Studios has been dominating the movie landscape since the MCU started, DC has the upper hand on TV. After all, the Arrowverse's series soared when the Dceu faltered, showing how a shared universe on TV can work.

Recently, director Matt Reeves and his The Batman universe proved once again that is something DC should look into, as The Penguin perfectly expanded upon Robert Pattinson's Batman movie. James Gunn's DC Universe is well aware of the potential that live-action series have. The Dcu already has many announced shows in different stages of development, with Peacemaker season 2 being the franchise's first live-action series to debut, set for a 2025 release. 10 Over-The-Top Action Movies From The 2000s That Are Tons Of Fun
Image
While gritty, realistic action has its place, there's nothing quite like an absurd action thriller that pushes beyond the boundaries of reason. The 2000s delivered plenty of silly action movies that married humor with excitement. Action has the ability to reduce anyone to awe and glee when it's done right. People can get swept away in the all-out fun of action movies in a way that doesn't necessarily happen for all other genres.

Some of the most entertaining action movies of the 2000s kept things light by poking fun at the absurd excesses of the genre. This trend produced a string of action comedies which remain both hilarious and thrilling all these years later. Even if movies weren't overtly gesturing toward the history of the genre, they were often parodying the tropes of action and pushing to see where the boundaries lie.

Shameless: Fiona's Greatest Lovers Ranked

While Shameless follows the Gallagher family in all their schemes and misdeeds, the show also puts a serious emphasis on the love lives of Frank's children, especially all the Fiona Gallagher boyfriends. She had a knack for making reckless and impulsive decisions, which extends to her romantic partners. In the world of Shameless, Fiona's boyfriends are often as reckless as she is. From Steve in season 1 to Ford in season 9, all of Fiona Gallagher's love interests from Shameless seem to share a few qualities.

More often than not, it's the same drive that the Gallaghers possess when it comes to making a space for themselves in their cut-throat surroundings. Some are good people with whom Fiona wouldn't mind settling down, while others are never intended to be more than a one-time fling. Jason Stathams Crank Almost Starred Nicolas Cage

For more than two decades, the effortlessly cool and charming Jason Statham has dazzled moviegoers all across the world with his dominating on-screen presence and jaw-dropping physical prowess. Known for portraying tough-as-nails characters who kick butt and take names, the Hollywood leading man is one of the entertainment industry's most bankable stars and has appeared in a slew of silver screen hits like The Transporter, Spy, The Expendables, and Hobbs & Shaw.

Back in 2006, Statham was still making a name for himself and showing audiences his dazzling skill set when he headlined the action flick Crank, a pedal-to-the-metal thrill ride that follows hitman Chev Chelios as he is forced to run around Los Angeles and perform adrenaline-pumping stunts after being injected with a lethal poisoning. The movie would help further elevate Statham's status as an actor, though he almost didn't end up playing the memorable character; let's look at how different Crank could have been.

The Five Scariest Moments of Alexandre Aja’s Filmography
Image
Alexandre Aja is one of those filmmakers whose work I’ll always sit up and pay attention to. It’s because the man has consistently created horror movies that have scared, fascinated, and downright pissed me off as a human being. He’s provocative, in all the right ways.

So, with Alexandre Aja’s latest horror movie Never Let Go releasing in theaters this week, we thought we would take a look back at his five most haunting horror movie moments.

Double Entendre – High Tension (2003)

Mere minutes into Aja’s second feature film, we’re smacked in the head with a horrid act that will set the tone for things to come. We see the truck moving...

His diverse filmography spans more than just comedies, which is why fans on Ranker came together to rate all his movies. Let’s take a look at which ones made it to the top 10.

10. ‘Safe House’ (2012)

Ryan Reynolds stars alongside Amy Smart and Anna Faris, though critics agree that the movie isn’t quite as funny as you’d expect from a Reynolds comedy.

Mirrors (2008) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

Deadpool & Spider-Man Team Up Following MCU Director Movie Comments In Marvel Poster Art
Image
Shawn Levy has suggested that he wants to bring Deadpool and Spider-Man together in the MCU after Deadpool & Wolverine. New fan art sees Deadpool and Spider-Man join forces in a parody of the poster for 2006's Just Friends, which starred Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool and Spider-Man would work brilliantly together in the MCU, particularly given their rich Marvel Comics history.

After Shawn Levy's recent comments regarding his MCU wishes, Deadpool and Spider-Man have been imagined joining forces in new Marvel fan art. Ryan Reynolds will be making his MCU debut as Deadpool in Phase 5's Deadpool & Wolverine, bringing him into Marvel Studios' franchise permanently, and creating the opportunity for him to cross paths with other heroes in the future. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy wants one of these heroes to be Tom Holland's Spider-Man, and this could be a superhero team-up for the ages.

After Levy expressed his hopes to...

The Hidden Gems of Tubi’s Horror Catalogue
Image
With the recent news that Tubi surpassed Max, Disney+ and Paramount+, it got me thinking about how far the service has come. It was mostly just seen as a joke but now it’s beating some of the heavy hitters. I’m not exactly shocked as even my grandparents have proclaimed their love for Tubi. The ease of access is always going to be the biggest winner for the average viewer. Plus the fact that it’s Free doesn’t hurt either. At a time where other streaming services are adding ads of their own and increasing their paid tiers to absurd prices, services like Tubi become more and more appealing.

Tubi has come a long way since its days of direct-to-streaming shlock. Sure, there are classics like Child’s Play, Interview with the Vampire, Pumpkinhead, The Descent and Near Dark. But what about some titles that are more off the beaten path?...
