American Idol has a new winner.

Jamal Roberts was voted as the Season 23 finale by fans of the ABC singing competition. Host Ryan Seacrest said there were 26 million votes cast, which broke a record and was twice as many as for last year’s finale.

Roberts is the first Black man to win the singing competition since Ruben Studdard was crowned champ of Season 2, which aired in 2003.

On Sunday night (May 18), the 44-year-old singer made her first TV appearance in 15 years by performing during the American Idol season 23 finale.

The final three contestants — pop-country singer Breanna Nix, R&b artist Jamal Roberts, and country star John Foster — went head-to-head-to-head during ABC's three-hour finale on Sunday night. After America voted live coast-to-coast, Jamal was named the winner, John finished as the runner-up, and Breanna came in third place.

Jamal is now the second Black man to win American Idol after Season 2's Ruben Studdard 22 years ago, in 2003. Meanwhile, there have been four Black women to prevail: Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, Candice Glover, and Just Sam.

Going into the finale were the Top 3 – John Foster, Breanna Nix, and Jamal Roberts – who all took to the stage again for their final performances of the season.

During the episode, singers including Jelly Roll, Pattie Labelle, Goo Goo Dolls, and Jessica Simpson all performed with this season’s Top 14 contestants.

At the end of the three-hour finale after all of America’s votes were counted, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest announced the new winner!

The Final 5 contestants — Breanna Nix, Jamal Roberts, John Foster, Slater Nalley, and Thunderstorm Artis — will appear alongside the nine most recently eliminated artists: Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, Josh King, Canaan James Hill, Kolbi Jordan, Ché Chesterman, Filo, Amanda Barise, and Desmond Roberts.

The three judges — Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie — will sing a showstopping number together, and "Artist in Residence" Jelly Roll will deliver a performance in addition to his role as the season finale mentor. “They’re like, ‘What are you drinking?’ Because it’s this Chinese herb thing,” the singer admitted.

The 44-year-old singer, who recently returned to music after over a decade, shared a video of herself drinking an herbal tonic.

“They’re like, ‘What are you drinking?’ Because it’s this Chinese herb thing,” she told musicians in a studio.

“And I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ My vocal coach told me to drink it, and they Googled the ingredients and—snake sperm. It’s like a honey.”

In a new Instagram video, Simpson drinks a bottle with darkly-colored liquid and a yellow label while hanging in the studio recording her recently-released Nashville Canyon EP. She explains that her vocal coach told her to drink the “Chinese herb thing,” and upon googling the product’s ingredients, she learned that one of the ingredients was snake sperm.

She seems unbothered by it in the video, however, comparing the beverage’s taste to honey (rather than tea) and laughing it off. She concludes the video with a bit of advice: “If you want a good vocal, you got to drink snake sperm.” I guess it’s working! Watch her Instagram video below.

On Thursday, Jessica Simpson delivered a surprise performance at the Luck Reunion 2025 festival in Spicewood, Texas, with a gesture that shocked some fans.

Simpson has been attempting to make a comeback in the music industry and had a busy week. On Wednesday, she appeared at the South By Southwest festival in Austin Texas, marking her first performance in 15 years. She sang her 2003 hit “With You” and her famous 2005 cover of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin.”

After festival-goers at her performance at SXSW commented that she seemed to be “slurring” her words, Simpson amped up her energy for her Thursday performance. She donned a loud cheetah print dress accentuated by a giant turquoise statement necklace and a white lace cover.

Simpson was joined on stage by a bass player and two backup singers and kept a white Stanley bottle nearby for regular hydration checks.

Some of the biggest stars at SXSW 2025 spent the festival’s third full day of music at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch, where everyone from Julien Baker and Torres to Jessica Simpson and Lucinda Williams all showed up. Others were at Rolling Stone‘s Future of Music showcase, where música mexicana heartthrob Ivan Cornejo drew a sea of adoring fans.
