Another of the main creative forces behind Netflix's One Piece live-action adaptation is jumping off the Going Merry after Season 2 wrapped production. Matt Owens, who originally co-created and served as co-showrunner on the series with Steven Maeda has decided to step back to focus on his mental health. With his decision announced on Instagram, the main creative duo who spearheaded the effort at Netflix to adapt Eiichirô Oda's long-running manga is no longer involved, or, at the very least, is no longer calling the shots. Only Percy Jackson and the Olympians writer and co-executive producer Joe Tracz remains as showrunner for post-production after he took over for Maeda last April.

“The last six years working on the live-action One Piece have been a life-changing journey. A dream come true. It’s also been A Lot. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health,” Owens wrote on Instagram. “For now I’m gonna take a breath, do some therapy, try and rank up in Marvel Rivals, and come back refreshed for the new adventures that await.”

His departure comes after filming on Season 2 wrapped last month.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Sagal opened up about claiming the role as Dr. Kureha of Drum Island after fellow Hollywood icon and scream queen extraordinaire Jamie Lee Curtis turned the part down due to scheduling conflicts with her upcoming horror-comedy sequel, Freakier Friday. "If you haven’t watched live-action One Piece, you have to watch it. It’s on Netflix. I saw it by accident. We were just scrolling around and there it was. I was not familiar with the manga," Sagal recalled. "And like within a month, my agents call me and say ‘Hey, we got this offer for you on this show called One Piece. We’re not sure what it is.’ I was like ‘Are you freaking kidding me?’ So, I immediately—I just got back from South Africa.

Netflix’s beloved fantasy action comedy-drama series One Piece has officially wrapped production on Season 2, with an important casting of Rigo Sanchez as Luffy’s father, Dragon, revealed.

Based on the popular Japanese manga series of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, the Netflix series follows Monkey D. Luffy as he goes on a perilous adventure to become the King of the Pirates. He is joined by his crew, which includes master swordsman Roronoa Zora, expert thief and cartographer Nami, chef Sanji, and storyteller Usopp.

Netflix has shared a brand-new set photo showcasing the cast of One Piece to celebrate the official filming wrap of the eagerly anticipated second season. Given the end-of-production news, the Eiichiro Oda manga series adaptation could still premiere on the streaming platform this year after it was left out of Netflix's 2025 line-up announcement.

ABC has set a March 26 premiere date for the comedy’s seventh and final season. The Conners is ending with an abbreviated, six-episode run; ABC announced the final season in May 2024.

The show will take up its usual 8 p.m. Wednesday time period for the final episodes. That spot’s current occupant, Shifting Gears, is scheduled to conclude its first season on March 19.

Season seven will bring the series to a total of 112 episodes, an increasingly rare accomplishment for a network comedy series. Only one other current live-action broadcast comedy — CBS’ The Neighborhood — has more than 100 episodes to its name. (Fox’s animated stalwarts The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are also long past that mark.)

The Conners — a spinoff of ABC’s 2018 Roseanne revival that was canceled after one season following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr — has been a solid performer throughout its run.
