When Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Co-Star Took This Extreme Measure To Transform His Physique—But The Studio Let Him Down
Image
What Extreme Measure Did Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Co-Star Take For His Role? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

In 1999, The Matrix reshaped more than just reality. It reshaped bodies. While Keanu Reeves and the gang trained like martial arts machines, one of their co-stars took a more… surgical approach. Joe Pantoliano, who played the slippery Cypher, went under the knife to get in shape for the role. But the real twist: Warner Bros. never paid him back.

Pantoliano had worked with the studio before – Risky Business, The Goonies, U.S. Marshals – so he thought he had some goodwill built up. And when the Matrix team demanded he be in top-tier shape, he took them seriously. Very seriously. “They wanted me to be in the best shape of my life,” he told author Brian Raftery in Best. Movie. Year. Ever: How 1999 Blew Up the Big Screen (via Cheat Sheet). “No drinking, eating steamed vegetables,...

Was The Matrix’s Iconic Green Code Inspired By This Popular Japanese Dish? Here’s What We Know
Image
The Matrix Iconic Green Digital Rain Visual (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

The 1999 sci-fi action film, ‘The Matrix’, is still regarded as one of the best and most visually stunning movies of all time. If you remember, the film featured a cascading green code that rained down the screen.

Source of The Matrix’s Digital Rain

That code has a surprising, rather weird, origin story behind it. It’s not anything remotely related to a cryptic computer program, encrypted data, alien language, or some text with a deeper philosophical meaning. In fact, they were not real codes at all. On the contrary, it was sushi, the Japanese dish. Can you believe it?

In an earlier interview with CNET, Simon Whitely, the production designer of The Matrix, said, “I like to tell everybody that The Matrix’s code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes.” The source of the digital rain was...

Why Laurence Fishburne Didn't Return As Morpheus In The Matrix Resurrections
Image
When the first two sequels to the Wachowskis' "The Matrix," titled "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions," both released in theaters in 2003, it set a strange precedent for Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. Certain 2000s-era hits, rather than getting a single expected sequel, were granted a gigantic, outsize, super-sequel finale that was released in two parts. In addition to "The Matrix," major studios also took a "mega-sequel finale" approach to "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Harry Potter," "Twilight," and "The Hunger Games." Indeed, "Mission: Impossible" has since done the same thing with "Dead Reckoning" and "The Final Reckoning." Heck, even Marvel Studios made an "Avengers" mega-sequel-finale with "Infinity War" and "Endgame."

"The Matrix," however, also proved that the mega-sequel approach doesn't always work well. While "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" were hugely ambitious and exciting hits, they were also overstuffed, clunky, and wrestled with too many ideas. The mythology also became far too complicated for its own good.

Finding Nowhere Man — and Why TV’s Past Is Full of Hidden Gems
Image
I’ve been thirsty for TV to make me think. Something fresh. Who knew I’d have to turn to the past to get what I wanted?

And when you do find a hidden gem, sometimes you fall down a rabbit hole, and there’s no getting back out.

That’s precisely what happened when I stumbled onto Nowhere Man, a forgotten 1995 TV series starring Bruce Greenwood.

(Upn/Screenshot)

Diving into this show that was previously unknown to me made me realize just how many incredible shows are still buried in television’s past, waiting to be uncovered.

Most people know the famous one-season wonders — My So-Called Life, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks.

Every The Matrix Movie, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Short of "Star Wars" and "Star Trek," you'd be hard-pressed to find a science fiction franchise of the modern era more influential than "The Matrix." Did the Wachowskis' 1999 magnum opus take major inspiration from prominent anime and cyberpunk stories? Yes, but it blended those with a distinct philosophical angle, strong style choices, and an approach to action that completely revolutionized the Hollywood blockbuster.

Though the films that followed were more controversial, don't believe the lie that "The Matrix" is the only part of the franchise worth watching. Each piece brings new ideas, memorable moments, and serves a key role in the larger ideological narrative of "The Matrix." They may be less straightforward than the original, but in some ways, that only makes them more intriguing.

Today, we're ranking all of the "Matrix" movies, including the 2003 animated anthology film "The Animatrix." Each is a success in its own right, but some stand taller than others.

Warner Bros. begged the Wachowskis to make The Matrix
‘The Matrix’ director Lilly Wachowski has revealed the movie was a "last-ditch, Hail Mary part of the deal" with Warner Bros. The 57-year-old filmmaker - who helmed the iconic 1999 action movie and its two sequels ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ with her sister Lana Wachowski, 59 - explained the film was greenlit after a Warner Bros. executive begged the directing pair to make it in an effort to save their job.Speaking with Collider, Lilly said: “‘The Matrix’ was a last-ditch, Hail Mary part of the deal. "It was part of a three-picture deal. We were just going to write and direct ‘Bound’, and write two other scripts."After ‘Bound’, the head of production at the time called us into his office and said, ‘You have to save my job. We need this.’"Even after the Wachoskis handed in the script, the pair weren’t sure how the studio...

When Keanu Reeves Jumped Off A 46-Story Building 19 Times To Get One Perfect Take For This Movie
Image
Here’s Why Keanu Reeves Jumped Off A 46-Story Building Multiple Times! (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Keanu Reeves didn’t just play Neo. He launched himself off a 46-story building 19 times to get one shot just right for The Matrix Resurrections. No green screen. No backup. Just Keanu, wires, and gravity. The man wasn’t pretending to be a superhero. He was one.

The fourth Matrix film arrived more than a decade after The Matrix Revolutions wrapped up what everyone thought was a trilogy. But Neo’s story wasn’t done. Neither was Reeves’ commitment to pushing the limits. When The Matrix Resurrections dropped, so did he from a skyscraper. Repeatedly.

At 57, Reeves still did most of his stunts. He told The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he jumped off the same building nearly 20 times for one perfect take. The light had to be right. The timing was everything. Nerves of steel were required.

Keanu Reeves’ $160 Million Disaster Should Change Warner Bros’ Mind About the Next Matrix Movie
Image
Keanu Reeves is one of the most beloved action stars of our time, but even he isn’t immune to box office flops. The same can be said for his Matrix franchise, which, despite its legacy and fan base, gave us one of the most disappointing films that tarnished the legacy of the franchise for good.

Of course, we are talking about The Matrix Resurrections, a sequel that spanned decades and ended up bombing at the box office. Given the film’s critical and commercial performance, one would have thought that Warner Bros. would not make the same mistake again. However, as was recently revealed, a new Matrix film is in the works.

“That’s The Truth”: Laurence Fishburne Gets Candid on His Conditions for a ‘Matrix 5’ Return After Previous Snub
Image
The Matrix 5 is in the works, and it is only natural that fans of the franchise have been curious about how development and casting have been coming along. In recent development, Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original Matrix trilogy, has revealed that his proposal to reprise the role in the 2021 sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, was met with mild resistance from the film's production team. During an appearance on The View, Fishburne shed more light on the events that transpired when he offered his services to the fourth Matrix while addressing his future in the sci-fi franchise.

Despite the return of co-stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, Fishburne was notably absent from Resurrections. The character of Morpheus was reimagined and played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, representing a new iteration within the film's story. Reflecting on this casting decision, Fishburne expressed no animosity, acknowledging the filmmakers' creative direction. When questioned...

"He’s Just a Hoot": Carrie-Anne Moss Teases Her Upcoming Scenes With Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Fubar’ Season 2
Image
Netflix's Arnold Schwarzenegger-led action comedy series Fubar is about to deploy for Season 2, just over two years after retired CIA operative Luke Brunner rejoined the fight. This time around, though, there will be "2x the Fubar," with the Governator set to share the screen with another action icon in the form of The Matrix legend Carrie-Anne Moss. A set of images released earlier this week officially pulled the curtain back on Moss's character this week, revealing that she'll play the mysterious black-clad East German spy Greta Nelso, who has "a passionate history" with Brunner dating back to their younger years. In recent comments to Tudum, the star shared her experience working with Schwarzenegger for the series and teased how they'll tango in the upcoming run of episodes.

Fubar won't be Moss's first rodeo with series creator Nick Santora. Before developing and showrunning his megahit Prime Video series Reacher,...

It's been two long years since Netflix first released the action comedy series Fubar, and for fans eagerly anticipating the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the streaming service, the wait is almost over. Laurence Fishburne Says 'Matrix 4' Team Declined His Morpheus Return Offer
Image
Laurence Fishburne has explained why he didn't show up in The Matrix 4, officially titled The Matrix Resurrections— and the reason for his absence might surprise fans of the sci-fi franchise. The actor famously portrayed Morpheus in the first three Matrix movies but didn't reprise the role for the 2021 sequel, which arrived in theaters 18 years after the conclusion of the original trilogy and reunited Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, respectively. Fishburne has now revealed that he wanted to return alongside his co-stars, but ultimately, the decision was out of his hands.

"I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn't respond well to that," Fishburne admitted as he got candid about his role in the franchise during a recent appearance on The View. Laurence Fishburne says he was turned away from The Matrix Resurrections
Image
Whether or not anybody really wanted a fourth Matrix movie (we didn’t), getting Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne to reprise Neo, Trinity and Morpheus was clutch. There was only one problem: Laurence Fishburne wasn’t going to be in The Matrix Resurrections. And while the story was originally that Fishburne was never asked, the actor now says he actually tried to be a part of it.

Appearing on The View, Laurence Fishburne claimed that he approached those making The Matrix Resurrections but was quickly turned away. “I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn’t respond well to that. Hey, it’s not like I didn’t say, ‘I’d like to offer my services.’ I did. And for whatever reason, that didn’t happen, Ok.” Instead, he would be replaced by The Trial of the Chicago 7’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, playing an entity merely embodying the character.

Val Kilmer Almost Played One Of The Matrix's Best Characters
Image
One of the hardest aspects for any talent turning down a project is watching it flourish beyond their wildest expectations without them. Michelle Pfeiffer turned down the role of Clarice Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs," and the film went on to win five Academy Awards, with one of those going to lead actress Jodie Foster. There are also nuclear-level missed opportunities like Matt Damon and James Cameron's "Avatar," where he not only turned down the role that Sam Worthington eventually played, but a 10 percent margin of the profits. But then you have cases like "The Matrix," where all of the possible casting outcomes open up a multiversal rift where the film takes on a completely different stature in each of them.

Lana and Lily Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi mind-bender was not only a critical and box office sensation, but ultimately went on to become one of the most influential films ever made.

Laurence Fishburne Was Turned Down for Reprising His Morpheus Role for ‘The Matrix Resurrections’
Image
Laurence Fishburne is revealing why he did not return as Morpheus for “The Matrix Resurrections,” and it turns out, it wasn’t Fishburne’s decision to be excluded from the 2021 franchise installment.

Fishburne said during “The View” (via THR) that he was turned away from the project. Fishburne did not disclose which team member disagreed with his casting. Lana Wachowski solo directed the fourth film, which was a Warner Bros. release. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were both back as franchise protagonists Neo and Trinity, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took over as a different iteration of Morpheus, the character originated by Fishburne in 1999.

“I offered my services to the fourth ‘Matrix,’ and they didn’t respond well to that,” Fishburne said while on “The View.” “It’s not like I didn’t say, ‘I’d like to offer my services.’ I did.” He added that “for whatever reason,” his casting...

Laurence Fishburne Didn’t Watch Will Smith’s ‘Matrix’ Music Video, Offered to Play Morpheus in ‘Matrix 4’ but ‘They Didn’t Respond Well’
Image
Laurence Fishburne hasn’t seen Will Smith play Neo in the “Matrix”-inspired music video for Smith’s single “Beautiful Scars” with rapper Big Sean. In fact, Fishburne wasn’t even aware the video existed.

“Oh really? I haven’t seen it,” Fishburne told Variety at the premiere of “The Amateur” on Wednesday night in New York City. “What’s it called?”

In the “Beautiful Scars” video, Smith portrays Neo, a role he turned down when the Wachowskis offered him the lead in their 1999 sci-fi action movie “The Matrix.” Keanu Reeves ultimately accepted the career-defining role. In Smith’s video, Big Sean steps into the role of Morpheus, originally played by Fishburne. When asked for his thoughts on the music video concept, Fishburne simply said, “I think that’s cool.”

Fishburne famously portrayed Morpheus in the first three “Matrix” films. However, he did not reprise his role in 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections...

'I Offered My Services': Laurence Fishburne Talks The Matrix 5 Return Prospects
Image
Fans can only hope to see Laurence Fishburne in the upcoming The Matrix sequel, but the actor weighed in on that prospect. He said he was all-in to reprise Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections, but the studio "didn't respond well" when he expressed interest.

The odds are stacked against Laurence Fishburne returning in The Matrix 5. "It depends on the circumstances, who was involved, how well the script has been written, if they offer me [a part]," he told The View. Fishburne set clear-cut expectations, hinting he's still open to the prospect; he said he also wanted in on The Matrix Resurrections but was rejected. "I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn't respond well to that," he asserted. "It's not like I didn't say, 'I'd like to offer my services.' I did. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back when he squares up against Carrie-Anne Moss for Fubar Season 2
Image
Netflix’s Fubar is making double trouble for its second season by adding Carrie-Anne Moss to the cast. Created by Nick Santora, Fubar shows what happens when a father and daughter discover their relationship is a lie and they are each CIA operatives. As the two join forces, the series depicts themes of family dynamics with humor, action, and spies. Today’s Fubar update includes the first photos of Schwarzenegger and Carrie-Anne Moss, who joins the Terminator actor for Season 2.

Netflix’s Fubar offers a hilarious look at Schwarzenegger – who is 77 years old – getting back to his action roots. While Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) does most of the heavy lifting in the hand-to-hand department, Arnold still displays his chops while dispatching goons like a pro. There’s also plenty of humor throughout the series, with the daddy/daughter duo bickering about poor life choices and co-workers razzing Schwarzenegger about his relationship aspirations.

Madonna Regrets Passing On An Iconic Batman Role
Image
During her heyday as one of the biggest musical icons in the world, Madonna seemingly had it all. In the 21st century, Madonna has become something of a legacy act, with bigger names like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift taking over as female pop icons. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, however, Madonna had the world gripped by her every move. And like Beyoncé and Swift, she confidently jumped from one medium to another, appearing in films like "Desperately Seeking Susan" and "Dick Tracy," the latter of which paired her opposite Hollywood legend Warren Beatty as a riff on the classic femme fatale archetype in Beatty's comic strip adaptation.

That 1990 film from Touchstone Pictures is worth keeping in mind for this story for a couple of reasons. While Dick Tracy was not a character or intellectual property that had been captivating audiences in the previous decade, it was chosen as...

‘Die Alone’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Douglas Smith, Kimberly-Sue Murray, Carrie-Anne Moss, Frank Grillo, Jonathan Cherry | Written and Directed by Lowell Dean

Die Alone is the most recent film from Saskatchewan-based filmmaker Lowell Dean. If you’ve heard of him, it’s probably because of the over-the-top genre comedies WolfCop and Another WolfCop. But he’s done several other films, including the zombie film 13 Eerie and the post-apocalyptic action film SuperGrid, which I was lucky enough to catch along with a Q&a session with him at the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival a few years back.

Both zombies and a post-apocalyptic setting return in Die Alone, but it’s not a typical tale of the zombie apocalypse, although that isn’t easy to tell from the opening scenes. Ethan and his girlfriend Emma were heading to his cabin when their car crashed. Ethan wakes up to find Emma and most of his memories, are missing.

Die Alone review – Carrie-Anne Moss is enigma wrapped in a parka in zombie survival thriller
Douglas Smith
Our hero Ethan is contending with a strange kind of cyclical amnesia that makes dealing with the flesh-eating undead a good deal harder

As this highly derivative but mildly absorbing Canadian horror thriller kicks off, we meet Ethan (Douglas Smith), a young man seemingly on the verge of killing himself. He looks out over a picturesque stretch of Saskatchewan landscape bathed in magic-hour glow before we cut to a welter of confusing, often blood-soaked flashbacks (or flashforwards) – and his voiceover then explains that although his memory doesn’t work so well, he’d rather not remember most of his life anyway. That’s because unfortunate Ethan is suffering from a kind of cyclical amnesia, not unlike the disorder that bedevilled Guy Pearce’s character in Memento, which compels him to keep reintroducing himself to people he’s met many times before. This is a particularly dangerous condition to have because...

When Brad Pitt Revealed He Passed On Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix: “I Took The Red Pill”
Image
Did You Know Brad Pitt Passed On The Matrix Before Keanu Reeves Came Onboard? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

For years, sci-fi enthusiasts have been caught off guard by a revelation about Brad Pitt: that he once turned down a role in The Matrix. The idea of Pitt entering the cyberpunk universe alongside Morpheus and Trinity has left fans in a state of wonder. Would he have slipped into the iconic black trench coat as Neo, or was another part on the table?

A Role Never Meant To Be

While promoting Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2019, Pitt casually acknowledged that he had been approached for the now-legendary film but chose to walk away. He kept the details vague, only admitting to passing on The Matrix and hinting at a few other major projects he had declined over the years. To him, the role was simply never meant to be.

“I did pass on The Matrix.

How To Watch The Marvel Netflix Shows In Order
Image
Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man" kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a multimedia superhero property that would remain dominant in the pop consciousness for over a decade. Initially, "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's own 2008 MCU movie "The Incredible Hulk" (which finally got a sequel of sorts in 2025) were meant to be mere stand-alone superhero sories, only including references to the Avengers as a cute wink to fans. But when Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009, a grander plan was put in motion, laying out multiple films at once, each one introducing a new character. Eventually, all the superhero characters teamed up in 2012's "The Avengers," which was essentially the cinematic version of a TV season finale. That structure held fast through to "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, the 22nd film in the franchise, and one that featured many, many superheroes.

While the McU's movies were dominating theaters, Netflix got in on the action as well.

The Matrix Reloaded Is Actually a Great Sequel
Image
How many movies arrive with the seismic thunder of The Matrix? Debuting to little fanfare in 1999, the movie became a sensation. Suddenly, black leather, trenchcoats, and sleek sunglasses became all the rage. Other movies rushed to parody and pilfer the film’s fight choreography. And in a feat matched only by Star Wars, The Matrix spawned its own religion. Suffice it to say anticipation ran high for the arrival of The Matrix Reloaded four years later.

In another feat also only matched by Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Matrix Reloaded debuted to Leviathan hype. Warner Bros. promoted the film with 24-hour showings in cinemas, but this time, the audience walked away feeling cheated and confused. In fact, despite earning positive reviews and doing mammoth box office, The Matrix Reloaded gained — and still maintains — a reputation as one of the worst sequels of all time. Thus, the time has come...
