‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Takes the Franchise to the Viking Era: Where (and When) Else Have Predators Gone?
Image
“Predator: Killer of Killers” arrives this summer on Hulu, the first animated film in the long-running franchise and one of two new “Predator” movies due out this year. “Killer of Killers” also finds the franchise headed to another era — actually, in this case, three.

The new animated film, directed by “Prey” filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg and set to release on June 6, 2025, will be an anthology story. In total, fans will get to experience a Predator story in the Viking era, feudal Japan, and WWII Europe, each with different heroes leading them. More details on that below.

But before we get there, let’s take stock of everywhere — and every time — the “Predator” franchise has been. It actually dates back pretty far.

The first “Predator” film, released back in 1987 — with the events of the film taking place the same year — stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch Schaefer, who is...

Steven Soderbergh Has “Terrifying Ideas” for ‘Contagion’ Follow-Up But Doesn’t Want to Be “Irresponsible”
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)
Director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns have been discussing a “philosophical sequel” to their 2011 pandemic thriller Contagion after Covid-19 gave the film new resonance.

Speaking on the One Decision podcast, Soderbergh said that they’ve “come up with some terrifying ideas” for the follow-up after speaking with pandemic experts. “There would have to be, I think, a plot that doesn’t feel predictable.”

He continues, “I don’t want to torture people. There are scenarios that you could come up with that I would categorize as irresponsible; you know, that I would go, ‘That’s a big idea, but I’m not sure I want to put that idea out there, frankly.’ I do think about that.”

Contagion‘s ensemble cast included Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, and Sanaa Lathan.

Steven Soderbergh Wants To Make “Terrifying” Post-Covid ‘Contagion’ Sequel Without Being “Irresponsible”
Image
Nearly 15 years and a worldwide pandemic later, Steven Soderbergh has considered revisiting one of his most relevant titles.

The Oscar-winning director recently teased a followup to his 2011 public health thriller Contagion, noting he wants to be “responsible” with the post-Covid sequel without making it “feel predictable.”

“We talk about it and have come up with some terrifying ideas. There would have to be, I think, a plot that doesn’t feel predictable,” he said on the One Decision podcast following conversations with pandemic experts.

“I don’t want to torture people. There are scenarios that you could come up with that I would categorise as irresponsible,” added Soderbergh. “You know, that I would go, ‘That’s a big idea, but I’m not sure I want to put that idea out there, frankly.’ I do think about that.”

The Best Sports Films That Aren’t About Sports
Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor in Challengers (2024)
Whether you intend to watch ’the big game’ on Sunday or not, there’s just something about a great sports narrative. And no, we’re not talking about the NFL’s tired retread of a matchup we already saw two years ago between Kansas City and the Philadelphia Eagles— we’re talking about sports movies. Even if you’re more into watching film than sports— and let’s be honest, if you’re part of the Film Independent community, then there’s a good chance of that — the best sports films have something for everyone. There’s the irresistible underdog you can’t help rooting for. Determined characters coming together to face insurmountable odds. The framework— an individual or team in pursuit of greatness — is a classic hero’s journey. But as the films below showcase, the best sports stories aren’t actually about the sport at all. They’re about relationships,...

The Best Dylan O'Brien Movies & TV Shows (That Aren't Maze Runner), Ranked
Image
A decade ago, Dylan O'Brien was a rising star in the entertainment industry. After success on a little-known MTV series, he was tapped to lead what should have been the next big franchise. The popularity of dystopian franchises such as The Hunger Games and Divergent made it apparent that there was a market for more content. O'Brien starred as Thomas in The Maze Runner, an adaptation of James Dashner's book of the same name about a group of boys who wake up in a terrifying maze with no memory of who they are.

While The Maze Runner was a commercial success, critics were less impressed, and the franchise lost steam during the third film, The Death Cure. O'Brien was injured during a stunt gone wrong when he was hit by a car. The actor has since gone on the record about how his safety concerns were disregarded, leading to a bad experience on set.

Harley Quinn Season 5, Episode 1 Review: Brainiac's Debut Promises To Give DC's Animated Series A Much-Needed Boost
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1Harley Quinn season 5 might not have been talked about much before its release due to the focus on James Gunn's DC Universe, but I have to say it will likely turn heads. I'm a fan of the show and the expanded universe it has created, which now includes a Kite Man spinoff series. That kind of worldbuilding, presenting a lived-in world from the start full of established heroes and villains, is exactly what Gunn is going for with the Dcu, and Harley Quinn could teach the franchise some lessons.

Harley Quinn is a 2019 film focusing on the titular character's evolution after severing ties with the Joker. As she seeks to establish herself as an independent force in Gotham City's criminal underworld, the film explores her journey toward becoming Gotham's criminal Queenpin.

Why Laurence Fishburne Left CSI After Season 11
Image
Laurence Fishburne left CSI: Crime Scene Investigation for a specific reason. The show, which premiered on CBS in 2000, was created by Anthony E. Zuiker and ran for 15 seasons, in the process spawning half a dozen spinoffs including CSI: Miami, which ran for 10 seasons, and CSI: NY, which ran for nine. The flagship show, which followed a Las Vegas Police Department crime scene investigation team, featured a rotating cast of stars over the years, which included William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, Gary Dourdan, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Paul Guilfoyle, Eric Szmanda, Robert David Hall, Louise Lombard, and Elisabeth Shue.

Laurence Fishburne joined the CSI franchise in 2008, first appearing on the flagship show in season 9 as former medical doctor Raymond Langston and becoming a main cast member two episodes later, after the departure of Petersen's longtime character Gil Grissom, who had been a part of the series since the pilot. Alien Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best
Image
Let’s face it – Alien movies are not created equal. In my Alien: Romulus review, I noted that there have really only ever been two flawless films in the franchise, with the rest all having moments of genius (well – most of them) but none measuring up to the first two movies in the saga. All of this makes Alien movie rankings quite controversial, as it’s a divisive topic. So, how does our Alien movies ranked list shape up? Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007)

I honestly couldn’t believe Fox had the gall to release this as a legit entry into the franchise in 2007. At the time, the studio had a bad reputation for putting out half-baked and cheap genre fare (made even more frustrating by how many were based on top-notch properties). This was the nadir of both the Alien and Predator franchises.

Future Alien vs Predator Movies With Prey & Romulus Characters Seemingly Teased By 20th Century Boss
Image
More Alien vs. Predator movies could be on the way, combining characters from the new subfranchises spawned by Prey and Alien: Romulus. The original crossover franchise between the Alien movies and the Predator movies kicked off with AvP in 2004 and was followed by a sequel subtitled Requiem in 2007. While AvP 3 has so far failed to come to fruition, both franchises are still going strong with the 2022 prequel Prey being followed by Predator: Badlands and 2024's Romulus becoming the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down for an interview with 20th Century president Steve Asbell. During their conversation, he touched on the success of both franchises and the possibility of the Alien vs. Predator subfranchise continuing in the wake of their success. In a word, he said a new AvP movie would "probably" happen, though "we haven't gotten to that point." He adds that such...

The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat Review | Fine Cast Saves Melodrama
Image
The film portrays the undying friendship between three Black women through the joys and sorrows of life. Strong performances by the ensemble cast add depth to the emotional narrative of friendship and support, which helps us forget about the movie's empty supporting characters and weak attempts at humor. Despite some Lifetime Movie-style moments, the film's heartwarming portrayal of enduring friendship shines through all the melodrama.

The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat chronicles decades of friendship between three very different Black women. The narrative jumps back and forth from their teenage years to the turn of the 21st century with laughter, tragedy, and crises galore blended like a malted milkshake. A tear or two may be shed as the film pours melodrama on thick in a Lifetime movie of the week fashion, which doesn't help the long runtime, intermittent pacing, and cookie-cutter supporting characters. That said, both leading ensembles are endearing and...

Every ‘Alien’ Movie, Ranked
Image
“Alien: Romulus,” out now in theaters, is a surprise late-summer hit and proof positive that the “Alien” franchise is far from over.

And the new movie, plus the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth,” have us wanting to look back at the series – the highs, the lows and the what-were-they-thinkings. Below is the definitive ranking of every “Alien” movie.

Chest-bursters and face-huggers are, of course, welcome.

20th Century 9. “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007)

The poster for “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” is stylized as “Avp R,” which emphasizes the fact that the movie was actually rated R, unlike the earlier PG-13-rated “Alien vs. Predator.” And, in that sense, the movie delivers the goods – there’s a ton of splatter in this installment.

A direct sequel to the earlier extraterrestrial team-up movie, “Avp R” is set in a small Colorado town, where a predator/alien hybrid from the end of the previous movie is on a bloodthirsty rampage.

What to watch this weekend August 23, 2024: Movie awards contenders
Image
Our top streaming pick this week, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s spiritual sequel to his seven-time Oscar winner “Dances With Wolves.” The awards chances for “Horizon” look dimmer than “Dances,” though, especially after the passion project flopped in theaters.

The film is a Western epic following the arduous journeys of settlers and outlaws as they try to reach the frontier town of Horizon. In addition to Costner, who plays a stoic horse trader named Hayes Ellison, the sprawling cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, and Luke Wilson, among many others. The release of in-the-can second part has been postponed indefinitely, but now that “Chapter 1” can potentially gin up some interest with its streaming release on Max, maybe “Chapter 2” will get a new date soon.

Here are some other movies to stream this weekend:

The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat – Review
Image
Okay all you music biopic fans, just keep reading the title past the first two words. This should give you a hint that it’s not the “rags to riches” tale of the 60s talented titanic trio from Motown. Actually, this story is set quite a distance from Detroit. way down in North Carolina. And yes, much of the flashback sequences are set in the 1960s, but the title refers to a nickname given to three childhood friends. And if you’d guess that the ploy revolves around their “ups and downs”, romances and challenges, well you’re perhaps familiar with the novel this film is based upon…or you picked up the gist of it from the poster. So, get those tissues ready to wipe away the tears inspired by The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat.

After a brief flash-forward, the film focused on three middle-aged women strolling toward the aforementioned eatery.

From escaping troubled homes as teenagers in 1960s Indiana, the women lean on each other through everything from heartbreak and loss to health scares.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays the outspoken Odette, with Uzo Aduba as pianist Clarice and Sanaa Lathan portraying Barbara Jean. Younger versions are acted by Kyanna Simone, Abigail Achiri, and Tati Gabrielle.

At its heart, the film celebrates the solace women can take in sisterhood when facing adversity. From their antics as youth to familial roles as adults, the Supremes lean on each other and local haven Earl’s Diner. Their friendship proves a source of fun, comfort, and strength,...

Alien vs Predator Saved Both Franchises Whether You Like It or Not
Image
Alien vs. Predator revived both franchises by introducing a new generation of fans to the iconic sci-fi monsters. The PG-13 rating for Alien vs. Predator made it accessible to younger viewers, expanding the audience and attracting new fans. Despite mixed reviews, Alien vs. Predator set in motion the continued success of both the Alien and Predator franchises with several sequels.

August 2024 saw the release of Alien: Romulus, the latest entry in the Alien franchise. It also marked the 20th anniversary of Alien vs. Predator, which hit theaters on Friday, the 13th of August 2004. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Alien vs. Predator, or Avp, was marketed as an epic crossover between the Alien and Predator franchises. The film was a moderate box office hit, but the critical reaction was far from kind to the movie and is only saved from being the worst-reviewed entry in either franchise thanks to the 2007 follow-up,...

The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat review – female friendship saga falls flat
Kathy Najimy, Randy Quaid, Ashley Johnson, Jason Mewes, Peter Scolari, and Zachery Byrd in All You Can Eat (2018)
Adaptation of Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel has admirable intentions and terrific cast but is too rushed to soar

In The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, three best friends lock arms for life, hoisting each other up as they are dealt one tough hand after another. The women – played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Uzo Aduba and Sanaa Lathan in their later years – keep their heads up through crushed dreams, manipulative romances, domestic abuse, addiction, violent hate crimes, the devastating loss of a child and a cancer diagnosis. There’s a lot of trauma to unpack. But that’s not really what The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat is out to do.

The movie, adapted from Edward Kelsey Moore’s bestselling novel and directed by Tina Mabry, stays buoyant and lighthearted, with intention. Hollywood only tends to tell Black stories when they can dwell on misfortune. This dramedy, instead, chooses joy and laughter,...

Alien: Romulus Director Comments on Possibly Making Alien vs. Predator 3
Image
The reception to Alien: Romulus has already been rather strong, making the future of the franchise seem much brighter. There's no telling if there will be any more Predator crossover movies, though Romulus director Fede Alvarez is open to the idea.

Per Deadline, Alvarez was asked about the possibility of working on a new Alien vs. Predator film following the release of Romulus. The director commented that it could be a collaboration with filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, who directed the hit Predator prequel Prey. As far as whether he'd seriously be interested in heading down that road, Alvarez suggested that it would depend on the success of Romulus along with how much fan desire there might be for Alien vs. Predator 3 to happen.

One of the greatest franchises of all time, Alien has found its way to immortality through its unique ability to evolve. Few franchises can bounce around genres quite like Alien.
