‘It keeps me on my toes’: ‘St. Denis Medical’ star Allison Tolman on walking a fine line between zany and ‘incredibly heartfelt’
Image
“I’ve always wanted to do a mockumentary,” admits Allison Tolman about what immediately drew her to St. Denis Medical. The self-professed Christopher Guest fan had heard word about the project and told her team to get their hands on the script. Once they did, the premiere episode by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer did not disappoint: “I was already pretty excited about it just based on the format, but then, read the first script and was like, ‘Oh, this is really lovely. The jokes are funny, the characters are interesting, they really know how to make this format sing,’” she recounts. (Watch our full interview above).

Tolman plays supervising nurse Alex in the new workplace comedy series, which is set in a regional hospital in Oregon. Though the character struggles with setting work-life boundaries, especially considering that she has two young children at home, Alex serves as the calm-ish...

NBC Chairman reveals plan to boost popularity of 'iconic' One Chicago franchise
Image
One Chicago has weathered the storm. Sure, the franchise is going to have to make some changes in order to limit its budget, and part ways with select stars, but all three shows have been renewed by its network, NBC, for additional seasons. And apparently, the good news doesn't stop there.

One Chicago was one of the franchises singled out and praised during NBC's Upfront presentation on May 12. The network presented its fall plans, and Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios Donna Langley assured loyal One Chicago fans that the network is making moves to ensure that the franchise performs better than ever. How? By leaning into sports coverage.

NBCUniversal Has Hoop Dreams As Sports Set To Dominate Upfronts
Image
Last year, it was movies. This year, it seems, it’s all sports. The Upfronts kicked off at Radio City Music Hall with NBC reminding advertisers that it will soon have NBA basketball.

The company scored the first basket at the three-day event that will likely be dominated by live sports with the news that Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, had signed up to be a special contributor to its NBA coverage.

“Sports is definitely having a moment in the industry and, God knows, you’ll hear the word ‘sports’ ten-thousand times this week, how some sports are moving to streaming or other platforms are adding a day or two to their schedule,” said Mark Marshall, Chairman, NBCUniversal Global Advertising & Partnerships.

But Donna Langley, whose team just put together its first fall schedule (sort of) that includes primetime basketball, said that she hopes its $2.5B annual deal will have a positive impact on the rest of its programming.

Langley, Chairman, NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studio, said, “Every game will be a new event, a weekly tentpole that maximizes the impact of the league across our platforms and delivers a sizable audience watching in real time for our advertising partners. By adding NBA games to the schedule, we’ll build on decades of sports programming on NBC and create a halo effect around the entire entertainment schedule. So whether you’re a Bravoholic, a cinephile, a sports fanatic, news junkie, or simply can’t miss Weekend Update, our franchises offer something for everyone, which means our advertisers can, without question, reach the broadest possible audience.”

NBC’s October schedule features less than a third scripted programming with only one new series – Jimmy Fallon’s marketing reality series On Brand, with The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe, who were on stage, being added at some point over the fall.

There were a handful of other NBC stars on stage including David Alan Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey from St. Denis Medical, which is returning for a second season, Reba McEntire, star of Happy’s Place and a coach on The Voice, and S. Epatha Merkerson from Chicago Med.

“One of the many powers of this portfolio is the ability to build and maintain audiences season after season whether it’s newer comedies like our show St. Denis Medical or iconic legacy franchises like Law & Order or Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago Pd, Chicago Sanitation and Chicago Municipal Zone,” Grier joked.

The Upfronts presentation leaned heavily on Peacock programming including The Office spinoff The Paper and Dig starring Amy Poehler.

Poehler, who was joined on stage by her “work husband” Tina Fey, said that production on the show, which reunites her with her Parks and Recreation cohort Mike Schur, starts this summer.

The company showed a trailer for The Paper, which comes from The Office’s Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, which featured The White Lotus star Sabrina Impacciatore as a female Michael Scott. “You’re going to get tired chasing my pretty little butt around with that camera,” she says in the clip.

Oscar Nunez, who played Oscar Martinez in The Office, is back, this time in Toledo, Ohio. “Oh, no, not again, I’m not agreeing to any of this. Don’t you guys have enough after nine years, I’m starting over with another of these things,” Nunez’s Martinez says in the trailer.

“I told Mr. Greg Daniels that if Oscar came back, he would probably be living in a more, bustling, cosmopolitan city. Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton, so it was nice to be heard,” joked Nunez.

Domhnall Gleeson plays idealistic journalist Ned Sampson. “Fans of The Office will be delighted to see Oscar back at work. Some older fans will look at me and be glad that Meredith is also coming back. That’s a red hair joke,” said Gleeson.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth Banks, Keke Palmer and Dakota Fanning were on stage to promote The Miniature Wife, The Burbs and All Her Fault, respectively.

Banks, whose series is a marital comedy also starring Matthew Macfadyen, joked that her relationship with NBCU goes back to the time that she did a spot on Third Watch, which ran between 1999 and 2005, as well as an appearance on Law & Order: Svu, which Palmer also starred on when she was 12.

“Every person you see up here today, every performance, trailer or clip actors have prepared for you, brings us back to four little words, the mantra that greets us every day in the headquarters in Los Angeles: Above All Else: Entertain, and that’s what we do best,” concluded Langley.

Inside the NBCU Upfront: Seth MacFarlane Takes Aim at Rival Streamers, ‘Wicked’ Gets Another Big Showcase, Snoop Dogg Closes It Like It’s Hot
Image
Seth MacFarlane may have made network upfront history on Monday, opening the NBCUniversal presentation with a song-and-dance routine boasting the chorus, “NBCU has the shit you’re after!”

That was likely the first time any network boasted that they’re “the shit” in their message to advertisers — but it was very on brand, of course, for MacFarlane, whose overall deal with the company has so far generated a live-action Peacock series based on his “Ted” film franchise, and now an animated take on it as well.

Among MacFarlane’s competitive barbs in his number, which kicked off the two-hour NBCU upfront: “You can give all your money to Netflix/ just to have your commercials on auto play/ But I got news, buddy, all your views are the Tinder Dates just busy getting laid.

On Disney and Hulu, where MacFarlane still has a ton of business via his animated series “Family Guy...

Poker Face Season 2 TV Review: Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson reunite for more mystery-of-the-week shenanigans
Image
Plot: Poker Face is a mystery-of-the-week series following Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.

Review: While Rian Johnson revived the whodunit on the big screen with Knives Out and the Netflix sequel Glass Onion, his charmingly retro small-screen series Poker Face has truly proven its worth in the tried-and-true genre. Echoing classic shows like Columbo and The Rockford Files, Poker Face‘s first season centered on Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), who solved mysteries while on the run from gangsters looking to kill her. The overarching narrative of the first season was engaging, but the standalone mysteries boasting famous guest stars turned Poker Face into must-watch programming. After a two-year wait, Poker Face is back with another ten mysteries,...

Natasha Lyonne clarifies that her AI directing debut ‘Uncanny Valley’ is ‘not really an AI film’
Image
The second season of Poker Face was celebrated Thursday at the Hollywood Legion Theater where Natasha Lyonne, the star, executive producer, writer, and director, took a time-out from the premiere party to talk to Gold Derby about her upcoming movie, which has received plenty of attention this week.

Lyonne announced just days earlier that she was embarking on her feature film directorial debut, called Uncanny Valley, that would employ generative AI. Although Lyonne said she and her team would use the technology "ethically and creatively," the news was met with ambivalence due to industry-wide fear of artificial intelligence not only replacing artists but incorporating their work without permission.

Seemingly wary after some reports got it wrong, Lyonne on Thursday was cautious to note that Uncanny Valley “is not really an AI film.” Very aware of the reputation and threat the term AI carries in Hollywood, she clarified “ultimately, what this...

‘St. Denis Medical’ Co-Creator Breaks Down Joyce’s Big Plan for the Hospital’s Future and Why the Show May Never Address Its Mockumentary Format
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from “This Place Is Our Everything,” the Season 1 finale of NBC’s “St. Denis Medical,” now streaming on Peacock.

A big change is coming to St. Denis Medical, just as long as the ceiling doesn’t cave in.

All season, hospital executive director Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) has gone to great lengths, often to the chagrin of her employees, to bring renown and resources to the Oregon hospital. But in the Season 1 finale, she took a major step in that direction, securing $10 million to further her plans, even though she immediately starts promising it away to the needs of others. But when she is sidelined by an injured ankle, she takes the quieter moment to confide in Ron (David Alan Grier) that she already has her own vision for the windfall –– to open a birthing center at St. Denis to make it the destination for...

‘St. Denis Medical’ Boss Unpacks Finale’s Romantic Cliffhanger, Teases ‘Getting Out of the Hospital’ in Season 2
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “St. Denis Medical” Episode 18.

“St. Denis Medical” wrapped up its first season with big money and big reveals, setting the stage for interesting dynamic shifts upon its return.

Episode 18, titled “This Place is Our Everything” followed as Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) juggled many demands from hospital staff on how to use the $10 million funds that were raised in last week’s gala. With an assist from Ron (David Alan Grier), Joyce was encouraged to reject everyone else’s ideas in favor of implementing her own to turn St. Denis into the prime destination for maternity medicine in Oregon — with the money helping to kickstart those efforts ever so slightly.

The episode also saw some full-circle moments for Matt (Mekki Leeper) and Alex (Allison Tolman). After spending the day getting questions from Serena (Kahyun Kim) about his ideal lover, Matt helped a patient with an EpiPen emergency,...

‘Elsbeth’ Debuts Kaya’s Replacement & Sets Up Michael Emerson’s Final Return (Recap)
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17, “Four Body Problem.” The new cop assigned to work with Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni made his debut in the Thursday, April 10 episode of Elsbeth, and he’s played by Wicked‘s Ethan Slater. Officer Reese Chandler has his quirks, as did every guest star in this episode. From an internet conspiracy theorist who was searching for her missing friend to the people Kaya (Carra Patterson) interviewed through her detective tip line grunt work, there was no shortage of unique personalities in this installment, which ended with a chilling warning about investigating Michael Emerson‘s Judge Crawford. Slater’s Reese is a well-intended cop who’s not the best at reading a room. While investigating a long-running funeral home run by David Alan Grier‘s Clark Greene Jr., the newbie cop kept talking loudly about his personal life. Elsbeth had to remind him to focus on the task at hand.

What Is the Point of Wicked’s Ethan Slater on Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 17?
Image
That was certainly, uh, an episode of Elsbeth. What exactly did we just watch? A lot was happening, but none of it made much sense.

I’m starting to think this series takes place in an alternate reality because sometimes the dots just don’t connect.

Honestly, the character of Elsbeth must be psychic because there was barely any reason for her to suspect the murderer. Sure, Miss Tascioni is an excellent sleuth, but she isn’t Theresa Caputo.

(Michael Parmelee/CBS)

There was virtually no reason for the character to investigate the killer. While she was right on the money, the plotting wasn’t there.

That said, the real crime on this episode was the price of coffins. Two hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars for an “eco-friendly” coffin? Burn me up, put me in little matchboxes, and hand me out to my loved ones.

Elsbeth Is Only in Its Sophomore Season,...

2025 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Matt (Mekki Leeper) is the newest staff member of St. Denis Medical, the setting of NBC's new hit workplace sitcom. A former resident of an isolated religious community, he's had trouble fitting in to the bustling hospital. In a Collider-exclusive sneak peek of this week's episode, the good news is that Matt has a new mentor to help him improve; the bad news is that his new mentor is conceited surgeon Bruce (Josh Lawson).

In our exclusive sneak peek of this week's episode, "Anything to Push Zaluva," Matt laments how he's constantly cracking under the pressure of the hospital's high-stress environment, resulting in him acquiring an unprintable nickname from the rest of the staff. The egotistical Bruce thinks this is a plea for his services as a mentor. However, he's reluctant to do it because he thinks that when Matt inevitably fails, it'll look bad for him. But...

Early Emmy odds in 16 categories: ‘Hacks,’ ‘Severance,’ ‘The Penguin’ out front
Image
The 2025 Emmy nominations won't be announced until July 15, but Gold Derby already has a head start on handicapping the races.

First things first, we are predicting last year's Best Comedy Series champion, Hacks, to win again for its upcoming season, which premieres April 10 on Max. After all, the Emmys love repeats. The Season 4 plot follows legendary stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) as she gears up for her nightly talk show with the help of her on-again/off-again comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Both Smart and Einbinder are also leading their respective Emmy contests for Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actress.

Severance is back for Season 2 after a three-year delay, and it's expected to receive a goat-load of Emmy love. Adam Scott, Britt Lower, John Turturro, and Zach Cherry play office workers at the sinister Lumon Industries, who all agree to separate their workplace memories from their external memories.

St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 14 Review: Finding Comedy in Chaos
Image
The following contains major spoilers from St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 14, "Listen to Your Ladybugs," which debuted Tuesday, March 11 on NBC.

St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 14, "Listen to Your Ladybugs" relies on the NBC sitcom's cast completely losing it. The humor in all three of the storylines revolves around a character being pushed to their breaking point. Luckily, the actors understand the assignment and are able to bring the laughs without making every situation feel like the end of the proverbial world. This is an example of taking heightened comedy situations and knowing just how far they can be pushed.

"Listen to Your Ladybugs" takes its title from the women's health initiative that Joyce tries to start at St. Denis. Like most of what Joyce thinks is a good idea, this winds up falling apart. But there's also Ron dealing with a plotline that will make every viewer think twice before Googling their symptoms,...

Extremely early Emmy odds: ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Bear’ expected to dominate comedy acting races (again)
Image
If you're looking for a major shakeup at the 2025 Emmys, don't hold your breath for the comedy acting races to make waves. For the second year in a row, Hacks and The Bear are predicted to extend their streak of domination — led by Jean Smart and Jeremy Allen White, who are both undefeated for playing Deborah Vance and Carmen Berzatto, respectively.

The last time one of those two names wasn't called on Emmy night was in 2023, when Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson took home Best Comedy Actress during an off-season for Hacks. Last year, The Bear clawed its way to three of the four main acting prizes and swept both guest star categories (Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis). Smart handed the FX series its only acting loss, snagging her third Emmy for Hacks over The Bear's Ayo Edebiri. Can anyone pull off an upset this year? Here's the state...

Inside the success of ‘St. Denis Medical’: ‘If you’re a comedy and you’re not trying to make people laugh, I don’t think you’re doing it right’
Image
Let's face it: We all need a good laugh — now more than ever.

“Laughing is one of the most fundamental, foundational human joys, if not the fundamental foundational joy,” says Eric Ledgin, showrunner and co-creator of St. Denis Medical, NBC's hit medical mockumentary. “So whatever the subject matter is, if you're a comedy and you're not at least trying to make people laugh, I don't think you're doing it right. And I think that audiences are really feeling the craving for that.”

Ledgin took the stage March 7 at SXSW's Film & TV Festival alongside Universal Television's EVP of comedy development Jim Donnelly to chart the series' comedic creative journey in a panel titled "Pitch to Screen," moderated by Gold Derby's editor-in-chief. Listen to the entire conversation in a special episode of the Awards Magnet podcast below.

Making people laugh, though, has become harder than ever. “Audiences are very savvy right now,...
