No trip to Nashville is complete without a day (or late night) spent at Robert’s Western World when Sarah Gayle Meech is onstage: The queen of the honky-tonk plays the last true country bar in town every Thursday and Saturday. On Friday, Meech dropped her new video for “Love Me,” premiering on Rolling Stone Country.
It’s a smooth-as-bourbon performance, with Meech evoking the sheen of Seventies country music. Bonus: There’s a steel guitar! Meech says the track is a nod to Glen Campbell’s polished vibes, in...

The song features a prologue delivered by the late Tom Petty himself describing how the moment of inspiration that led to “Southern Accents.” Dolly Parton then provides an emotional, stirring rendition of the song, kept at the same balladeer tempo as Petty’s original. She retains much of the song, though she adds a crucial change to the song’s latter third when belting “Yes I’m proud to be what I am/ A southern girl from a southern town/ I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed, I ain’t ashamed.”

Brian Wilson is finally set to release his 1970s era country album featuring the vocals of former Beach Boys manager Fred Vail. Titled Cows in the Pasture, the long-lost album is slated to see the light of day sometime in 2025, according to a new feature in Rolling Stone.
As the story goes, Wilson presented Vail with the concept for the project in 1970 despite the manager not having formal training. “I said to him, ‘Have you written any country songs?'” Vail told Rolling Stone. “And he said, ‘Well, no.’ I said, ‘Do you have any idea who you’d like to use as musicians?’ He said, ‘Well, no. I’ve only worked with the Wrecking Crew for the most part. You find the songs. You select the musicians. We’ll go into Wally Heider’s Studio. We’ll start working on the album.'”

Here’s a trivia question for you: Who was the first person to win the Grammy for Album of the Year? It was legendary composer Henry Mancini, who won for the soundtrack to the television show “Peter Gunn.” Let’s take a look back at all of the albums that have claimed this coveted prize in music history.
The attributes of what makes a great album always vary but a well made album will always be viewed as a work of art. Great albums can just be an amazing collection of songs that flow together musically or they can be songs that collectively make a statement. The albums that have won Album of the Year have encompassed all of these areas. They have ranged from some of the most revered classics, from “Sgt. Pepper” by The Beatles and “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, to the biggest achievements in recent years, from...

The Grammy for Best Country Song has gone to some of the most iconic tunes ever in the genre. From all-time classics like Glen Campbell‘s “Gentle on My Mind” and Willie Nelson‘s “On the Road Again” to modern smash hits like Lady A’s “Need You Now” and critically acclaimed gems like Kacey Musgraves’s “Space Cowboy,” voters are often very careful and accurate in awarding the very best in country music. This year’s set of nominees is, in my opinion, one of the strongest the category has ever seen, with a mix of Grammy favorites and already-classic country songs facing off.
Perhaps the only song that doesn’t have much of a chance to win here is Brandy Clark’s “Buried.” The track isn’t really a big hit or particularly acclaimed, and Clark will likely fare better in the Americana categories anyway. Still, Clark got six nominations this year,...

As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. The album ranked Number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of...

In his career, Elvis Presley covered a number of popular songs. He did not typically write his own music and so relied on lyrics written by others to build his career. One song he covered to great, devastating effect was “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Elvis was a longtime fan of its original singer, Hank Williams, and described the song as the saddest he’d ever heard.
A Hank Williams song was the saddest tune Elvis had heard
Elvis’ deep, crooning voice was perfect for ballads, and he tackled a number of sad songs in his career. One of his favorite artists was Williams, and Elvis often sang his melancholy songs in casual settings with friends. He covered the song “Your Cheatin’ Heart” in 1965 and would later go on to sing “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

Though he certainly didn’t invent the genre, Elvis Presley became widely known as the King of Rock’ n’ Roll. Little Richard tried to reclaim that title during the 1970s with an album called King of Rock and Roll. Sadly, it didn’t work out well for him. Little Richard discussed why the album performed so poorly.
Little Richard tried to reclaim ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ from Elvis Presley with a covers album
There’s no broad agreement as to who invented rock ‘n’ roll. Some of the artists named as the genre’s progenitor include Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. The latter released an album called King of Rock and Roll in 1971, well after that title had been applied to Elvis. The album largely featured covers of songs by other stars such as Martha and the Vandellas, Three Dog Night, and The Rolling Stones.

Exclusive: Elaine McMillion Sheldon, the filmmaker known thus far for her Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning work in the documentary space, is making her first move into narrative as the director of a film on Marry Harris Jones — the hallowed labor figure known to history as Mother Jones.
Jerry Bowles and David O’Malley penned the script for the project, with Lisa Saltzman set to produce.
An Irish-born American working at various points as a dressmaker and schoolteacher, Jones pivoted her focus to union and community organizing and activism after experiencing two major, personal tragedies: the death of her husband and four children from yellow fever in 1867 Memphis, and the destruction of her dress shop in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The impassioned figure would come to be known as “the most dangerous woman in America” while working to secure rights for mine workers and ban child labor.

True Grit actor John Wayne refused to accept roles that didn’t fit into the character that he took so long to establish with moviegoing audiences. Additionally, he wouldn’t star in any movies that insulted his morals and values. Wayne played a tough marshal in True Grit with Rooster Cogburn, but he once explained why his sense of justice made sense.

Movie star John Wayne created an iconic character in True Grit‘s Rooster Cogburn. The eyepatch-wearing U.S. marshal became a legendary figure of cinema, continuing to influence contemporary feature films and their characters. However, Wayne doesn’t typically cuss a whole lot in his movies, yet he had a specific reason for why he allowed it while starring as Cogburn in True Grit.

Henry Hathaway directed True Grit from Marguerite Roberts’ screenplay based on Charles Portis’ novel. It’s a story of revenge after Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey) murders the father of an independent 14-year-old named Mattie Ross (Kim Darby). She’s young, but she refuses to allow him to continue surviving after taking her father’s life.

True Grit actor John Wayne became the face of the Western genre thanks to iconic classics, such as Stagecoach and Red River. He always had a firm understanding of characterization, but he always wanted to keep it family-friendly. Wayne once said that he actually preferred the changes made to the True Grit ending compared to the one in the original book, which wasn’t so “uplifting.”

Jeff Beck played his first gigs on a guitar he built himself, plugging in with local bands in the London suburbs from age 13, before honing his craft at Wimbledon School of Art, studying the artistry of rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Beck mixed the virtuosity and speed Les Paul displayed on radio broadcasts, and the heaviness of even the most melodic Gene Vincent records into his own sound. Beck transformed The Yardbirds from blues purists to proto psychedelia pioneers before inventing hard rock on The Jeff Beck Group’s 1968 Truth album. A new Jeff Beck Group came out with Rough and Ready, infusing fluid jazz phrasings onto R&b ensemble rhythms.
It’s been said Pink Floyd considered asking Beck to join after Syd Barrett left. Beck turned down an invitation to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones for a project with Vanilla Fudge bassist and vocalist Tim Bogert,...

Producer Lisa Saltzman has acquired the rights to “Burning Bridges: Life With My Father Glen Campbell” and plans to adapt the story of the “Rhinestone Cowboy” singer into a feature film.
Debby Campbell, the singer’s daughter, wrote the best-selling biography with Mark Bego. Saltzman will produce alongside Rick Bieber (“Crazy”).
“Burning Bridges: Life With My Father Glen Campbell” offers a firsthand, warts-and-all account of one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century, a man who released more than 70 albums which sold more than 50 million copies. At the pinnacle of his fame, Campbell recorded chart-toppers such as “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman.” He won four Grammys in the country and pop categories, and also received a lifetime achievement award.
In addition to music, Campbell also branched out into acting and television. He co-starred with John Wayne in “True Grit” and sang its Oscar-nominated title song.

Country music legend Tanya Tucker has been enjoying a career resurgence of late, a phenomenon due not only to her talent but also to the efforts of a fellow country superstar, Brandi Carlile.
It was Carlile who helped convince Tucker to come out of semi-retirement and record While I’m Livin’, her first album in 17 years. The process of making that record, and what it meant for Tucker to re-enter the spotlight, is documented in The Return of Tanya Tucker – Featuring Brandi Carlile, directed by Kathlyn Horan.

So, who doesn’t love the story of a comeback, the rise from the ashes soaring into greater glories and triumphs? Well, this particular performer at the heart of this new feature-length documentary isn’t too keen on it. It actually annoys her a bit, as she prefers something closer to a “resurgence” or a “re-appreciation”. If anyone has truly earned the right to specify a “labeL’ then it’s this artist, who’s been part of the music charts for over fifty years now. She’s amassed lots of fans in that time, but happily one of the youngest fans is making quite a name for herself now, and she’s using her clout to forge a new collaboration with her longtime inspiration. Which explains the lengthy title, The Return Of Tanya Tucker: Featuring Brandi Carlile.
The “making of” part of the doc really begins with that “featured” performer.

In August, Brandi Carlile had a viral moment when footage was released from Joni Mitchell’s magical performance at the Newport Folk Festival, which Carlile had organized. As Mitchell sang with an age-defying grace and power, Carlile sat a few feet away, playing guitar and beaming in a mixture of pride and awe.
Two months later, you can see a variation on that same look in “The Return of Tanya Tucker – Featuring Brandi Carlile,” a documentary that shows how Carlile has helped bring back more of her idols than just Mitchell. If nothing else, the tale of Tanya Tucker is one worthy of its own epic country music song and, as “The Return of Tanya Tucker — Featuring Brandi Carlile” shows, even its own documentary.
Country music legend Tucker scored her first major hit, “Delta Dawn,” in 1972, when she was 13 years old and since then, has painstakingly crafted a career despite the ups and downs that come with fame. But it had been 17 years since Tucker had released an album of original music, but with fellow country singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile by her side, she returned to the studio. And at the very last moment, so did a film crew.
Director Kathlyn Horan stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at TIFF to discuss “The Return of Tanya Tucker — Featuring Brandi Carlile” with TheWrap’s editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman, and explained how she came to be involved in the project.

Here’s an awards trajectory you don’t see too often, at least in country music: Lainey Wilson has never even been nominated for the CMA Awards before, but as of Wednesday morning, she’s officially the leading nominee for 2022.

Racking up a four-pack of nods were Cody Johnson and writer-producer Josh Osbourne. Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs, Hardy and Midland all came up as triple-nominees.

Close behind with five nominations each was a quartet of contenders: Ashley McBryde, Carly Pearce, Chris Stapleton and songwriter/producer Shane McAnally.
Racking up a four-pack of nods were Cody Johnson and writer-producer Josh Osbourne. Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Luke Combs, Hardy and Midland all came up as triple-nominees.

The biggest surprise about Shark Side of the Moon is that, in a genre that’s already seen Sharks of the Corn, Sharkula, Ouija Shark and even Shark Encounters of the Third Kind, it took so long for someone to use the title. What shouldn’t be so surprising is that it was The Asylum that did it and it makes its bow as a Tubi Original, part of Bitefest, the streaming service’s Shark Month.
During the Cold War, the Soviets were experimenting with human/shark hybrids at a launch facility. As is usually the case in these situations the experimental creatures got free. In a desperate bid to keep them from reaching the ocean, Sergey lured them onto a shuttle...

From the directors of The Asylum’s Dune knockoff and the writers/director of The Asylum’s Aladdin ripoff comes The Asylum’s Tubi Original Shark Side of the Moon. Just when you thought it was safe to colonize Earth’s crater-covered moon again, Glenn Campbell and Tammy Klein introduce Russian human-shark hybrids as cosmic predators. Or, more appropriately, lower-than-low-budget digital renderings of what The Asylum standards define as extraterrestrial Street Shark lookin’ freakshows. You’re going to read the review you’d expect for Shark Side of the Moon, a zero-star technical affair that’s barely fit for Syfy’s Sunday headliner slot — but with such an out-of-bounds concept, it’s hard to ignore and not marvel at the Frankensteining of genres on display.
The gist is simple. Russian scientists create humanoid-shark supersoldiers that can survive any situation, which escape their facility and are flown to the moon by...

Bill Pitman, a guitarist whose work as part of the legendary recording session group The Wrecking Crew made an invaluable contribution to countless radio hits, TV series and films, died yesterday at his home in La Quinta, California. He was 102.
His death was announced to The New York Times by wife Janet Pitman, who told the publication her husband died after four weeks of hospice care following a fall that fractured his spine.
Pitman’s guitar playing was ubiquitous, if largely anonymous, for decades beginning in the 1950s. Just a sampling of the songs he played on: The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night,” Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were, The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and The Monkees’ “Papa Gene’s Blues.” He played the ukelele on the B.J. Thomas hit “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,...
