Proof of Concept, an accelerator program supporting women, trans and nonbinary filmmakers founded by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, producer Coco Francini and noted researcher Dr. Stacy L. Smith, debuted the work of its inaugural class at a showcase on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

“The showcase is a celebration of a cornucopia of new, wonderful points of view, and importantly, it’s a celebration of this vital step for these filmmakers,” said Blanchett. “From here, we know that these helmers can start shaping and remaking the industry.”

A generation of kids grew up watching Raja Gosnell's 2002 live-action comedy flick "Scooby-Doo," an adaptation of Hanna-Barbera's long-running Scooby-Doo cartoon shows from the 1970s. Fans of action movie icon Jason Statham can revisit his heist movie that's nearly two decades old. At the start of next month, the film is getting a new streaming home.

Statham's The Bank Job is set to start streaming on Max on Feb. 1. Originally released in 2008, the heist thriller is based on the true story of the infamous 1971 burglary known as the "Baker Street robbery." The film earned respectable reviews, scored at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. It made over $66 million worldwide at the box office against a budget of $20 million.

Everyone loves a solid crime thriller, and The Bank Job, directed by Roger Donaldson, is as solid as they come. The plot follows Jason Statham’s Terry as his crew is set up by Martine Love (Saffron Burrows) to rob a safe deposit vault within a bank. Unbeknownst to Terry, their true purpose is a government plot to steal photos of a royal sex scandal from a ruthless gangster, Michael X (Peter de Jersey). While the robbery is based on true events, The Bank Job embellishes the truth, adding in government involvement and exploring conspiracy theories surrounding motivations for the robbery. Gangsters and corrupt politicians in the film have possible real-world equivalents, but the vagueness of the overall narrative assists in heightening the tension.

2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the Renny Harlin shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here) – and all these years later, one of the film’s stars is still waiting to have a rematch with the genetically engineered mako sharks at the heart of the story. Director Renny Harlin had a few successes and some major bombs throughout his career in the '80s and '90s but achieved moderate recognition for Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea, both featuring Samuel L. Jackson. In modern cinema, he's best remembered for the latter, which only received mixed reviews upon its release but has succeeded in being one of the most beloved creature features starring the ultimate predators of the ocean. "Scary, absurd, inessential." That's how critic David Denby described director Renny Harlin's 1999 shark movie "Deep Blue Sea" in his review for The New Yorker. I think it's fair to say that history agrees with his first two points. That third point, however? That one has been challenged greatly as the film was a success in its day and has gained a much larger following in the years since its theatrical run. It's now a franchise with two direct-to-video sequels. More than that, one could easily make the argument that it's the second-best shark movie ever made, only behind Steven Spielgerg's all-time blockbuster classic "Jaws."

Tarf Media has acquired world sales rights excluding UK on romantic thriller White Widow, a debut feature from UK filmmaker Henry Mason.

Tarf will launch sales on the film at Cannes this week, with Yet Another Distribution Company representing UK sales rights.

Alberto Corredor’s directorial debut, the supernatural horror film Baghead, is now out on digital, DVD and Blu-ray.

Based on his short film of the same name, Alberto Corredor’s Baghead follows a young woman who inherits a pub in Berlin. She discovers a disturbing entity, the titular Baghead, in the basement. Baghead has the ability to bring the dead back for a wee chat, but unfortunately, there are terrifying consequences as there usually is with these things.

The film stars The Witcher’s Freya Allan in the lead role. She is joined by Jeremy Irvine, Ruby Barker, Peter Mullan, Saffron Burrows and Julika Jenkins in the cast.

The film marks Allan’s first feature film lead role, but Allan will next be seen in Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes as the human character that forms a connection with Noa, Owen Teague’s ape protagonist.

Yesterday, we shared a new interview with director Renny Harlin that mostly focuses on his latest film, the action movie The Bricklayer, which was given a theatrical, On Demand, and Digital release earlier this month. But the interview also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects, including the 1999 shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. During his conversation with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Harlin revealed that Samuel L. In the sixth-season episode of "Bones" called "The Finder," which aired in April of 2012, Brennan and Booth (Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz) travel to the Florida Everglades to investigate the death of a maritime museum worker whose remains in the woods lead to the discovery of a fragment of a 17th-century map. The map may lead to sunken treasure (!) and our heroes know that if they find the rest of the map, they'll likely uncover a murderer.

Walter is a kooky former soldier and head injury sufferer who possesses a bizarre, obsessive talent for locating lost objects. It's implied that Walter may even have semi-clairvoyant powers.

It’s the execution that matters in thrillers, and Dangerous Waters is one film that dwindles a lot in that department. Directed by John Barr, the film is one of the last performances by Ray Liotta, and this movie is dedicated to his memory. Besides that, the interesting part about this movie is that there is a lot of emphasis on grit and survival in the plot. The whole film screams of being a low-budget cult film, but there just isn’t that ‘x factor’ present to make it so. Odeya Rush, Eric Dane, and Saffron Burrows are good performers who understand the tone of the film, and they are cast quite brilliantly, but the structure and believability of the scenario of the film don’t do justice to the otherwise decent thriller.

Finalists are now being revealed for this year’s 16 Days 16 Films festival, an annual competition that’s attracted entrants from around the world.

To qualify, films are directed by a filmmaker who identifies as female, with their films 25 minutes or under. This year’s selection all, in the words of the festival, ‘explore, emote, or educate on a form of violence against women.’

Partners for the festival include Un Women, The Geena Davis Institute and the BFI. Previous finalists have included How To Have Sex director Molly Manning Walker, and Girl director Adura Onashile.
