Cannes Review: Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love Strikes Rote Chords Despite Jennifer Lawrence’s Visceral Performance
Image
Near the climax of Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, two assassins––one well-dressed but dying, the other ragged but definitely alive––laid together on a kitchen floor, their hands lightly touching as Charlene’s “Never Been to Me” drifted in from a nearby radio, the lyrics barely escaping the wounded man’s mouth. That shock of counterpoint elevated what was, until then, a clinically well-executed revenge picture into something approaching the sublime. Ramsay plays that card again with less-convincing results in her long-awaited follow-up Die My Love, a visceral, coiled film about a woman in the throws of a mental breakdown. As ever, Ramsay’s soundtrack choices are equal-parts fun and unpredictable, not least David Bowie’s “Kooks” on a car radio or the director herself warbling an acoustic cover of “Love Will Tear Us Apart” over the closing credits––fitting choice for a work of toxic...

Jennifer Lawrence & Robert Pattinson's New Psychological Movie Debuts With Strong Rotten Tomatoes Following Cannes Premiere
Image
The new psychological drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson has been well-received by critics. While Pattinson is perhaps best known for his franchise roles including Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Bruce Wayne in The Batman, he has also starred in a variety of titles from auteur directors. This includes Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse, Christopher Nolan's Tenet, Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars, and Claire Denis' High Life.

Jennifer Lawrence movies have taken Pattinson's co-star on a similar career trajectory. She has held two major long-running franchise roles, playing Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games movies and Mystique in the most recent branch of the X-Men franchise, prior to the characters joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, she first rose to prominence off the back of her Oscar-nominated performance in 2010's Winter's Bone,...

Cannes: ‘Die, My Love’ reviews kickstart early Oscar buzz for ‘astonishing’ Jennifer Lawrence
Image
Based on the reaction to Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, the first significant Oscar-caliber performance of the year has arrived thanks to Jennifer Lawrence.

“Cannes is a festival where Oscar narratives typically start to take shape, and while it’s far too early to make predictions, Lawrence has announced herself as an early frontrunner,” wrote The Daily Beast in an unbylined review (although critic Esther Zuckerman has filed several reviews for the outlet this week from France). “Die, My Love still has yet to find distribution, but it inevitably will get picked up with a big campaign in place. The second coming of Jennifer Lawrence is here and it’s astounding.”

In the headline for his review, Vanity Fair critic Richard Lawson called Lawrence “astonishing.”

“What keeps our attention during the film’s slightly sagging middle, and makes it such bracing viewing,...

‘Die My Love’ Review: Jennifer Lawrence Goes Full Feral in Lynne Ramsay’s Intense, Exhausting Postpartum Psychosexual Frenzy
Image
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Jennifer Lawrence doing any of the debasing things she does in Lynne Ramsay’s “Die My Love,” like crawling on all fours through a field of grass, a kitchen knife in hand as she closes in on her character Grace’s newborn baby, or masturbating gloomily in a state of postpartum doom while her husband Jackson (Robert Pattinson) finishes cooking dinner downstairs, a self-induced orgasm timed to the spring of a toaster below.

Grace is just trying to be a good wife, a good mother, but she’s failing spectacularly at it in Ramsay’s alternately absorbing, exhausting tone poem of post-birth grief turned into psychosexual frenzy. Lawrence — whose fearless skill in conjuring women gone perilously over the verge and unhinged from top to toe while trying to play house was already established in Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” — gives the kind of...

Sony Pictures Entertainment Saw Profit Surge In March Quarter On Lower Costs
Image
Sony Pictures Entertainment saw profit jump 70% in the March quarter to $354 million on lower theatrical marketing costs. Revenue for the three months, Sony’s fiscal fourth quarter, was essentially flat at $2.7 billion.

Paddington in Peru was a hit in Q1, a notably quiet one for Hollywood. Other releases included One Of Them Days, Walter Salles’ much decorated I’m Still Here and Becoming Led Zeppelin from Sony Pictures Classics and Heart Eyes from Screen Gems. The year earlier quarter featured The Book Of Clarence, Madame Web and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in late March, which was an expensive movie to market.

Coming soon: Karate Kid: Legends, which opened in Latin America (no. 1 spot in Mexico) this past weekend and hits Stateside on May 30; Danny Boyle horror 28 Years Later directed by Alex Garland opening June 30; and I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot in July. All went over well at CinemaCon...

Why Cujo's Lead Star Demanded A Different Ending For The Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Stephen King's 1981 novel "Cujo" is about a Saint Bernard dog that contract rabies from a bat and goes on a killing spree. The dog, Cujo, belonged to an abusive mechanic, so it was already seemingly predisposed to violence. It mauls several people throughout the course of the story. The novel climaxes with a local mom named Donna Trenton and her young son Tad becoming trapped in a Ford Pinto on a hot day as Cujo stalks them from outside. There comes a moment when Donna has to choose to stay in the car and risk dying of heat stroke ... or exiting the car and facing the killer dog.

In the book, Donna successfully fights off Cujo with a baseball bat, beating the dog and stabbing it to death with a shard when the bat breaks. Tad, sadly, does not survive the ordeal, dying of heatstroke in the Pinto.

"Cujo...

Tom Rothman Reups As Sony Pictures Motion Group Chairman & CEO In Multi-Year Contract
Image
It’s official: Tom Rothman has signed a multi-year extension of his contract as Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. The deal will currently make Rothman the longest serving film chief in Hollywood, and that includes his run at 20th Century Fox.

Some have wondered whether Rothman would ever retire, and the fact of the matter is that he loves the movie business a tremendous amount. This is seen in him being a steadfast proponent of theatrical, and a believer in its future longevity, not just in franchises, but original movies as well. For Rothman, cinema is about the big swings. If theatrical is going to survive, originality must prevail, and sometimes that means co-financing some projects ensuring that they hit the screen.

The news comes as Sony is expected to have a big summer with Karate Kid: Legends on May 30 and Oscar winner Danny Boyle’s...

Sony Pictures Movie Chief Tom Rothman Signs Multiyear Contract Extension
Image
Sony’s movie studio doesn’t have to worry about succession — at least not for the foreseeable future.

The company announced Friday that Rothman, 70, has entered into a multiyear extension of his contract as chairman-ceo of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. The news underscores the close professional bond he has developed with his relatively new boss, Sony Pictures Entertainment president-ceo Ravi Ahuja, who continues to believe that Rothman’s resolute commitment to fiscal responsibility and ability to push creative boundaries and take risks when needed make him the best person for job.

The well-respected Ahuja, 54, was tapped by Sony leaders in Japan to take over for Tony Vinciquerra earlier this year. The Hollywood Reporter has previously reported that Rothman was reupping, but the company made the news official on Friday.

Rothman is now the longest-running movie studio chief in modern times between his decade at Sony and, before that, at the now-defunct 20th Century Fox,...

Cannes Films ‘Alpha,’ ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ ‘Colors of Time’ and ‘The Great Arch’ Showcase Growing Maturity of French VFX Sector
Image
France’s VFX industry has grown rapidly, initially driven by a 2020 tax measure that allowed qualifying international productions to claim a full 40% rebate on digital expenses. This incentive revitalized the post-production sector, attracting major projects that, in turn, spurred further development.

Subsequent public initiatives have only accelerated this virtuous cycle, as the government’s France 2030 investment plan looks to widen a talent pool that now boasts 4,500 professionals while the country’s national film board, Cnc, has rolled out a series of VFX bonuses and incentives for local productions as well.

“We’ve seen a dramatic rise in local VFX spending over the past two to three years, helping to grow the sector despite a general international slowdown,” says Cnc director of digital Pauline Augrain. “French productions have really embraced VFX — both artistically and industrially. From that perspective, we’ve clearly reached a new level of maturity.”

This new creative maturity...

‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper Improvised the Funniest Moment of This ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Episode
Image
Remember, boys, Da’ Maniac loves you like you’re his own — so it’s probably for the best that the cops took him away.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been blessed to host so many incredible guest stars and celebrity cameos throughout the years, but only one A-lister who graced the set of the show was so good that the cast feared for both their and his safety: the late, great Roderick George Toombs, better known by his WWE stage name, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. On multiple episodes of Always Sunny, the professional wrestling legend played Da’ Maniac, an unhinged, emotional and entirely hilarious amateur wrestler whom the Gang hires and nervously befriends shortly before the police drag him away for his unpaid parking tickets.

Piper made his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia debut in the classic Season Five episode “The Gang Wrestles for the Troops,” and in the...

Image
A summer with strikes in the rearview and Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” poised to keep kicking ass at the box office and sticking in IMAX theaters? We’re here for it.

Starting this month, the summer movie season is upon us, with indies and blockbusters and some freshly burnished I.P. rolling out in theaters and on streamers. But people vote with their dollars — and, these days, their Letterboxd accounts — not their mouths, after all.

So which summer movies are likely to hit big?

While IndieWire always roots for originals, there are, of course, some familiar properties coming back to theaters this summer to guarantee cash flow. This is Hollywood after all, where rinse-and-repeat is hopefully less rote with (we hope) invigorating updates on titles and characters we...

Back in October, we heard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt of The Dark Knight Rises and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F had signed on to star in the film. 42 Years Ago, This Gory Stephen King Adaptation Changed the Book's Ending (& Got an Unexpected Letter of Thanks From the Author)
Image
Stephen King is one of the most prolific authors, and many of his works have been adapted into films and television shows. The horror author has been very vocal about his thoughts on his adaptations, but one of them even got a letter of thanks for changing one of the endings.

In 1983, Lewis Teague directed the adaptation of Cujo, based on King's 1981 novel of the same name. The story follows a mother and son who are trapped inside trying to escape their dog, who gets wild after being bitten by a bat. In a new appearance on Steve Kmetko's podcast Still Here Hollywood, lead actress Dee Wallace detailed King's reaction to the film changing the ending, per Entertainment Weekly.

Around the 18:15 mark, Wallace opened up about Cujo. "Cujo is my favorite movie of mine," the actress revealed. "The movie is very different from the book. In the movie,...

'Cujo' Star Reveals Stephen King's Reaction to the Movie's Ending After It Was Changed
Image
When you think about Stephen King movies from the 1980s, there are a few classics that immediately come to mind. The Shining, Stand By Me, The Dead Zone, and, of course, 1983's Cujo. Directed by Lewis Teague, who can forget the horrifying tale of a rabid St. Bernard terrorizing a mother and her son trapped in a Ford Pinto on a blistering-hot summer day? Both the book and the movie managed to strike a chord with audiences, not only because of the subject matter, but also because of the way each one ended. Now, star Dee Wallace has revealed King's reaction to the film's conclusion, which was noticeably different from his novel.

Appearing on Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, Wallace spoke at length about her incredible career, which has included appearances in Steven Spielberg's E.T., The Howling, Rob Zombie's Halloween, and Cujo. Wallace played Donna Trenton in the King film,...

Darren Aronofsky Was ‘Really Upset’ After ‘The Whale’: ‘I Couldn’t Figure Out What Was Next’ for My Career
Image
Darren Aronofsky had a big problem after the huge success of “The Whale”: He didn’t know what to do next. While “The Whale” landed lead star Brendan Fraser the Best Actor Oscar in 2023, Aronofsky was weighed down by the intensity of the feature’s plot about a man who essentially eats himself to death. Aronofsky wanted to work on a film that was lighter in tone.

“I was really upset that I couldn’t figure out what was next,” he told Vanity Fair. “And I kind of had this urge to do something fun.”

That led him to revisit Charlie Huston’s script for “Caught Stealing,” which had been in the works for about 15 years. “I felt like there was just so much tension in our normal lives that I felt like the one thing that Hollywood has always done great is entertain. I looked at my projects and I said,...

Back in October, we heard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt of The Dark Knight Rises and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F had signed on to star in the film. Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton and Fair Play joined in March. Now, Deadline reports that Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead and The Bikeriders has been added to the cast.

'The Batman' Stars Zoë Kravitz and Robert Pattinson May Be Reuniting... With a Twist
Image
Zoë Kravitz is undoubtedly one of the most prolific actors of this generation. From starring in one huge film franchise to another, she recently proved that her talent can extend beyond acting with the release of her acclaimed directorial debut, Blink Twice, just last year. Now, Kravitz may be stepping behind the camera once again after the successful theatrical debut of the psychological thriller. According to Deadline, the actress-turned-filmmaker is in talks to direct Sony Pictures' How To Save a Marriage. It is reportedly still in early stages of development.

While plot details about How To Save a Marriage remain under wraps, sources close to Deadline say that the film exudes "edgy undertones" akin to Blink Twice. The film's dark nature reportedly pushed the executives behind the project to choose Kravitz as its director. Kravitz's critically acclaimed directorial debut follows cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie), who must discover the truth...

Blink Twice director Zoë Kravitz is in talks to helm How to Save a Marriage with Robert Pattinson producing
Image
The cat’s out of the bag! Zoë Kravitz could get back behind the camera for his first directorial project since last year’s Blink Twice with a new film titled How to Save a Marriage. The mysterious project is setting up at Sony Pictures, with Ross Evans penning the screenplay and Kravitz’s The Batman co-star, Robert Pattinson, producing alongside Brighton McCloskey through their Icki Eneo Arlo studio. Geoff Shaevitz and Evan Silverberg will produce through Entertainment 360.

The plot remains a mystery, but Deadline says Sony jumped at the chance to snatch up Kravitz’s next film. While we don’t know much about the project, sources say it has Blink Twice vibes, making Kravitz the perfect choice to direct. I highly recommend seeing Blink Twice if you’ve not seen it. It’s a twisted tale about a mysterious island getaway where guests experience more than they signed on for.

'I Always Hate [It]': Natalie Portman Reveals the Career Question She Really Doesn't Like Being Asked
Image
Star Warsprequel trilogy star and Hollywood icon Natalie Portman explains why one interview question particularly irks her.

Speaking to Interview Magazine, Portman was asked about how she finds herself within the various characters she portrays and whether she looks for any of that kind of connection when going into a role. "I don’t know that it’s always the same for me," Portman replied. "I always hate the question of 'How do you relate to your characters' because I'm usually most interested in playing someone who's quite different from me."

"Because if it’s like me, I'd rather just live my own life," Portman explained. "But I think, because I have an aspect of my life that’s quite logistical now—I've got two kids who are in school and I want to spend as much time with them as possible—sometimes I take a job that is great,...

Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman Brawl Over Bitter Divorce in ‘The Roses’ Trailer
