Last month, we got to speak with Skarsgård and creators/writers/directors/producers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz about working on the series. We started by asking the show's lead about finding the humanity in a character called "Murderbot."

This Friday, Apple TV+ will premiere Murderbot, its new television show based on the beloved Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells. Wells' books are cult favorites in the sci-fi reader sphere, and have racked up a number of major awards in the field like the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. Saying the anticipation is high to see this series brought to the screen feels like a massive understatement; many people are dying to watch this show, and after reading the first book, I fully understand why.

Apple's TV show is created by Chris and Paul Weitz and stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular Murderbot, a self-hacking security construct which has found a way to bypass its failsafes and gain free will. Murderbot is the latest science fiction series from Apple TV+, taking an ambitious swing at a well-worn trope in the genre. Paul and Chris Weitz — known for Rogue One and American Pie — bring a deadpan comedic style to the source material that proves deadly effective. However, they rarely push the envelope within the genre.

While the series can be addictive and engaging at times, it often falls into the trap common to many Apple productions: a gluttonous display of style over substance, more concerned with showing off than telling a compelling story. (It is the “Look at me!” approach.)

Thank goodness for Alexander Skarsgård, whose humorous spin on the material keeps the viewer engaged. Skarsgård’s dilemmatic turn and dry wit engage the audience enough to keep coming back for more.

Two years after Infinity Pool, Brandon Cronenberg’s next film, the space horror Dragon, has secured a valuable bit of funding.

Following his 2012 debut Antiviral, it took director Brandon Cronenberg almost eight years to secure the funding for his follow-up, the similarly uncompromising horror-thriller, Possessor (2020). The warm reception to his 2023 genre piece, Infinity Pool (pictured above), however, means that the Canadian filmmaker appears to have had an easier time finding a backer for his next film.

Called Dragon, it’s said to be a “trippy space horror” about the crew of a ship coming into contact with “ancient organic lifeforms.”

The film almost went into production in 2017, but then financing abruptly fell apart. “I thought I had a career after Antiviral, and I fell on my face immediately,” Cronenberg told Film Stories magazine in 2023. “I just could not get another film made.”

Next week, Apple TV+ will premiere its new science fiction series Murderbot, and viewers should be prepared for a wildly entertaining ride. Murderbot is based on the award-winning Murderbot Diaries book series by Martha Wells, about a self-hacking security construct who has to grapple with suddenly having free will — so long as the humans around it don't find out its secret. It handles its newfound existential questions just like any of the rest of us would: by binge-watching cheesy television shows in hopes of avoiding the pesky humans demanding its attention, and maybe finding some truth-through-media along the way.

If you can't tell from that description, Murderbot is a series which toes the line between hilarious and contemplative, and I can't wait to see how viewers react to Apple's new television adaptation. Alexander Skarsgård stars as the titular Murderbot, but he's far from the only compelling cast member we'll be meeting this season.

The modern era of Hollywood only has a handful of true movie stars. The definition of the role has changed fundamentally over the years as the studio system morphed and shifted, and as a result, the amount of undeniably bankable stars the studios actually want to invest in has dwindled. But in the small handful that still remains, Florence Pugh shines as one of the brightest and best movie stars we have today.

She is absolutely fearless in front of the camera, and her taste in roles supports her obvious drive to find the most exciting and challenging ways to build her craft. Though her career has been, realistically, quite short so far, Pugh has already established herself as a risk-taker, and because of that, audiences are excited to show up when she makes the choice to lend her skills to a project. Honestly, she's rarely in something that doesn't deserve high praise.

The future of James Bond remains undecided, with the sale of the franchise by owners Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson to Amazon and producers scratching their heads as to how to reintroduce 007 following the character’s demise in Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die.

All stakeholders could do worse than consider Alexander Skarsgard’s offering of a Swedish James Bond, a superspy with all the requisite Bond trappings – tuxedo, licence to kill, way with the ladies – but with a particularly Scandinavian flair.

Apple TV+ has announced the programming that will be added to the streaming service next month. The Apple TV Plus May 2025 lineup includes Bono: Stories of Surrender, Deaf President Now!, Fountain of Youth, Long Way Home, Lulu Is a Rhinoceros, and Murderbot.

Apple TV+ offers drama and comedy series, feature films, documentaries, and kids and family entertainment. It is available on the Apple TV app on the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Mac, smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Tcl, and others, Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and at the Apple site.
