Based on Martha Wells' bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, Murderbot is a sci-fi comedic thriller about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients.
Murderbot (Alexander Skarsgård) must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.
Last month, we got to speak with Skarsgård and creators/writers/directors/producers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz about working on the series. We started by asking the show's lead about finding the humanity in a character called "Murderbot."
"We wanted a contrast and a juxtaposition between the name of the character and the way we designed the look of the character. We wanted a tough name like Murderbot, who looks like he could definitely beat you up, but it's...

Review: A series called Murderbot seems like it would be focused on buckets of blood and bodies strewn every which way, but it is a surprisingly balanced blend of comedy and drama based on the book series by Martha Wells. With Alexander Skarsgard in the title role as the humanoid machine who hates humans as much as he dislikes working when his favorite television series is on, Murderbot faithfully interprets the source material. With impressive production values courtesy of the deep pockets at Apple Studios,...

This Friday, Apple TV+ will premiere Murderbot, its new television show based on the beloved Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells. Wells' books are cult favorites in the sci-fi reader sphere, and have racked up a number of major awards in the field like the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. Saying the anticipation is high to see this series brought to the screen feels like a massive understatement; many people are dying to watch this show, and after reading the first book, I fully understand why.
Apple's TV show is created by Chris and Paul Weitz and stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular Murderbot, a self-hacking security construct which has found a way to bypass its failsafes and gain free will. As such, it no longer needs to listen to humans! Except that if the humans find out that it did this, they would melt it down to scrap. So rather than take any risks,...

Murderbot is the latest science fiction series from Apple TV+, taking an ambitious swing at a well-worn trope in the genre. Paul and Chris Weitz — known for Rogue One and American Pie — bring a deadpan comedic style to the source material that proves deadly effective. However, they rarely push the envelope within the genre.
While the series can be addictive and engaging at times, it often falls into the trap common to many Apple productions: a gluttonous display of style over substance, more concerned with showing off than telling a compelling story. (It is the “Look at me!” approach.)
Thank goodness for Alexander Skarsgård, whose humorous spin on the material keeps the viewer engaged. Skarsgård’s dilemmatic turn and dry wit engage the audience enough to keep coming back for more.

Two years after Infinity Pool, Brandon Cronenberg’s next film, the space horror Dragon, has secured a valuable bit of funding.
Following his 2012 debut Antiviral, it took director Brandon Cronenberg almost eight years to secure the funding for his follow-up, the similarly uncompromising horror-thriller, Possessor (2020). The warm reception to his 2023 genre piece, Infinity Pool (pictured above), however, means that the Canadian filmmaker appears to have had an easier time finding a backer for his next film.
Called Dragon, it’s said to be a “trippy space horror” about the crew of a ship coming into contact with “ancient organic lifeforms.”
The film almost went into production in 2017, but then financing abruptly fell apart. “I thought I had a career after Antiviral, and I fell on my face immediately,” Cronenberg told Film Stories magazine in 2023. “I just could not get another film made.”

Alexander Skarsgård has had an impressive and long career with roles spanning different emotional spans, continents, and genres. He has been a blood-thirsty vampire to different kinds of complex villains, to even existentially varying androids.
His performance in different roles has been unexpected, unforgettable, and layered to perfection. Whether it is the first time for you to see him perform in the upcoming Apple TV+ show, Murderbot, or have followed his work through the years. Let’s dive into some of his most notable works across the years.
1. True Blood: Eric Northman (2008-2014)

Apple TV+’s highly anticipated sci-fi show Murderbot, created by Chris and Paul Weitz from Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, sees Alexander Skarsgård as an AI robot. The storyline of the series from the trailer has been interpreted as very intriguing because who would think about a robot being more interested in watching a soap opera?
Even when we read or hear the title of the show for the first time, the image of a crazed, violent, non-sentient cyborg with the intent to wipe out humanity comes to mind, but in reality, Murderbot just wants to be left alone. Alexander Skarsgård, in a recent interview, speaks about bringing Murderbot from paper to life.

Next week, Apple TV+ will premiere its new science fiction series Murderbot, and viewers should be prepared for a wildly entertaining ride. Murderbot is based on the award-winning Murderbot Diaries book series by Martha Wells, about a self-hacking security construct who has to grapple with suddenly having free will — so long as the humans around it don't find out its secret. It handles its newfound existential questions just like any of the rest of us would: by binge-watching cheesy television shows in hopes of avoiding the pesky humans demanding its attention, and maybe finding some truth-through-media along the way.
If you can't tell from that description, Murderbot is a series which toes the line between hilarious and contemplative, and I can't wait to see how viewers react to Apple's new television adaptation. Alexander Skarsgård stars as the titular Murderbot, but he's far from the only compelling cast member we'll be meeting this season.

Apple TV+ is working on releasing a new sci-fi action comedy; the new original from Apple – Murderbot, which has been turning heads since its trailer was released, is about a security robot that is owned by a company that gives out robots to be used as tools for space missions.
Since it’s an Apple TV+ show, they are not going to make just another series that blurs the line between humans and machines. That has been done plenty of times; they are known to go all in with creators, writing, and most importantly, the casting. If Apple’s track record shows anything, it’s that they almost always nail these aspects.
Be it Shrinking, Ted Lasso, or The Studio, you can always see yourself pointing at the screen, excited to see an actor you adore doing some silly roles. The same is seen with the casting of Murderbot, from Alexander Skarsgård,...

Chris Weitz knows a thing or two about fandemonium. He directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon after the first Twilight movie, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, was a runaway box office hit and proved there was a ravenous base of Stephenie Meyer readers just bursting to see her stories adapted to the big screen. At the time, Twilight was intensely beloved by its fans and reviled by those who were very vocal about the fact that they didn’t get the appeal of vampires that sparkle. The “Twi-hards,” as the fan community would commonly become known, didn’t let any of that nay-saying stop them from being proud fans of the franchise. So when it came to crafting the titular character (played by Alexander Skarsgård) in his new Apple TV+ series Murderbot with brother Paul Weitz, he borrowed a bit from his experience ...

When it comes to the world of horror, the genre has allowed filmmakers to display their creativity by pushing the norms of traditional filmmaking. No less than a never-ending canvas and a boundless paint palette, filmmakers in the horror genre have the chance to go to the depths of human fear in whatever way they deem fit. Apple TV+ originals are slowly making their way into the minds of viewers thanks to shows like Ted Lasso, Severance, Silo, Pachinko, and more. The streaming platform has been competing with streaming giants like Netflix, but over the past couple of years, it has been seen that viewers have been shifting to Apple TV+ because of the original, authentic content.
Sure, Apple TV+ shows are exclusive to Apple users, but now they’re available for viewers who have smart TVs, consoles, and are online. Some viewers who have been watching the shows for a while now stated that the streaming platform should be given a chance because the shows on it know how to make the audience feel. It’s just quality over quantity for them, and I have no regrets in saying that I have canceled my Netflix subscription for Apple TV+, especially when it comes to these four shows.

Alexander Skarsgard would like to play a "very polite" James Bond. The 48-year-old actor explained how he undertook national service in Sweden as a teenager because he liked the idea of being like the suave spy, and with no successor yet appointed to take over the role from Daniel Craig, he pitched the idea he could take the part - but with "no violence at all".He told The Times newspaper of his national service: "I did it because I was 19, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I wanted to be James Bond for 18 months.”Asked about taking the character to the big screen, he added: “I could be a very polite, diplomatic Swedish James Bond, who negotiates. There’ll be no violence at all. It’ll just be boardroom meetings where people try to find consensus, everyone’s stressed out and desperately tries to avoid an argument or complications,...

The modern era of Hollywood only has a handful of true movie stars. The definition of the role has changed fundamentally over the years as the studio system morphed and shifted, and as a result, the amount of undeniably bankable stars the studios actually want to invest in has dwindled. But in the small handful that still remains, Florence Pugh shines as one of the brightest and best movie stars we have today.
She is absolutely fearless in front of the camera, and her taste in roles supports her obvious drive to find the most exciting and challenging ways to build her craft. Though her career has been, realistically, quite short so far, Pugh has already established herself as a risk-taker, and because of that, audiences are excited to show up when she makes the choice to lend her skills to a project. Honestly, she's rarely in something that doesn't deserve high praise.

The future of James Bond remains undecided, with the sale of the franchise by owners Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson to Amazon and producers scratching their heads as to how to reintroduce 007 following the character’s demise in Daniel Craig’s final outing in No Time to Die.
All stakeholders could do worse than consider Alexander Skarsgard’s offering of a Swedish James Bond, a superspy with all the requisite Bond trappings – tuxedo, licence to kill, way with the ladies – but with a particularly Scandinavian flair.
The subject came up in an interview with The Times of London in which the Big Little Lies actor explained he previously joined his country’s national service: “I did it because I was 19, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and I wanted to be James Bond for 18 months.”

In a few short weeks, Apple TV+ will premiere its new comedic sci-fi series Murderbot. Based on the beloved Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells, Murderbot follows a self-hacking security unit which has freed itself from the restraining measure which forces it to obey humans. Now it can do whatever it wants! And what it wants to is to watch soap operas and ignore the stupid humans in its midst as much as possible.
Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular SecUnit, who is purchased as part of a contract by a group of surveyors who are setting out to study a remote planet. Things eventually spiral, as they do, and Murderbot will have to decide whether it cares enough to help its human clients or leave them to their own inept devices.

The beloved Murderbot book series by Martha Wells is coming to the small screen on May 16, and if you're a sci-fi lover, there's reason to get excited. Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as a self-hacking security construct (called a SecUnit) who has overridden its own governor module, the bit of technology that forced it to obey humans. Now it has free will and can do whatever it wants...so long as the humans don't find out what it's done and melt it down to scrap. With such high stakes, it can't afford to slip up, so rather than drawing attention it distracts itself by binge-watching cheesy soap operas. Who among us hasn't?
The Murderbot Diaries books have won a slew of major science fiction literary awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. But even more importantly, they've carved out a passionate fanbase of readers who can't get enough of the SecUnit's...

Alexander SKARSGÅRD has always been drawn towards anarchy: disruptive characters who turn worlds upside down. Now, as he plays a rogue android in Murderbot, we meet him to discover what pushes his buttons
“Is there blood in my hair?”, asked Alexander Skarsgård’s Eric Northman, having just killed, dismembered and feasted upon some unlucky soul in HBO’s vampire saga True Blood. For many, the show was their first exposure to Skarsgård, who was starting as he meant to go on: anarchic, provocative, and unafraid to play characters with an unhealthy moral compass.
True Blood wasn’t *quite* the start. The son of Stellan Skarsgård, he acted in a few things as a child in Sweden before jacking it in, then appeared in 2001’s Zoolander, playing a model, Meekus, who gets blown up in a petrol station. After spending a few years in the Hollywood wilderness, Skarsgård finally broke through...

With the trailer for Murderbot just dropped, fans have gone into a frenzy. The action-packed, stealthy, rogue robot, Alexander Skarsgard, delivers perfectly. While the fantastic trailer has given everyone a glimpse of what to expect in the Apple TV+ show, set to release in May 2025, hardcore fans of The Murderbot Diaries found something entirely different very interesting.
Hidden brilliantly, but in plain sight, the kind of gesture a sharp robot would take notice of, in the trailer, is a subtle nod to the hit sci-fi novel series that started it all.

Succession star Alexander Skarsgård stars as a self-hacking robot, Murderbot, in Apple TV+’s upcoming science fiction action-comedy Murderbot. The series is an adaptation of Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, which takes an interesting twist on the usual sci-fi stories the audience has watched on-screen. The author serves as a consulting producer on the show to make sure that her story is being portrayed in the way she envisioned in her novel series.
Interestingly, the author mentioned in an interview that she started writing the novel series in 2016 when she was overwhelmingly angry at the political situation. Murderbot became her escape, and now Apple TV+ is bringing that to an audience intrigued by the idea of AI and humans coexisting in the same world. But ahead of the show’s release, some fans are worried that the streaming giant could take a different approach.

‘The Rise & Fall of Sanctuary Moon’: Why Murderbot’s Favorite Media Deserves an Apple TV+ Adaptation

Very few anti-heroes hold the ability to fascinate audiences like Martha Wells’ Murderbot has. The self-aware security robot, obsessed with sci-fi shows, has absolutely captivated viewers with its hyper-intelligence, deadpan humor, and unexpected relatability.
Among his favorite shows to binge-watch is the fictional series The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon- a dramatic, over-the-top soap opera which is both comforting and a coping mechanism for the shy and introverted bot.
With preparations in full swing for the release of the upcoming AppleTV+ series, starring Alexander Skarsgård, it could be worth dissecting why Sanctuary Moon itself warrants a standalone adaptation.
A meta-fiction brimming with potential
The fictional show within Alexander Skarsgård’s Murderbot has great storytelling potential and is filled with emotions, intrigue, and satire that could spark excitement among contemporary audiences. Talking about his character in Murderbot to Vanity Fair, Skarsgård said:
It just doesn’t get humans at all.

The HBO limited series "Band of Brothers" was the most expensive television miniseries at the time, recreating the American military unit Easy Company's European activities during World War II. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series provided an expansive and factually grounded account of American combat involvement in Western Europe during the war. Like Spielberg and Hanks' previous collaboration, the award-winning "Saving Private Ryan," "Band of Brothers" was praised for its stellar cast, realistic action, and expert attention towards historical authenticity. The series still sets the bar of quality for military shows, of any conflict, though there are a number of similar shows fans should check out next.

From the relentless Terminator to the calculating Hal 9000, AI typically falls into two categories: emotionless servants or humanity’s destruction. But Apple TV+ is about to introduce us to something entirely different.
Their upcoming adaptation of Martha Wells’ award-winning series The Murderbot Diaries brings us a security robot that’s neither a hero nor a villain. Instead, imagine an artificially intelligent being whose greatest desire is simply to be left alone to binge-watch futuristic soap operas.

Sound familiar to anyone else’s weekend plans? This SecUnit (security unit) has hacked its governor module to gain autonomy but uses this freedom not for world domination but to consume entertainment and avoid awkward social interactions.
