Douglas C. Hart, an assistant camera operator on more than 50 feature films including Kramer vs. Kramer and such Woody Allen movies as Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig, died Tuesday while under hospice care at an assisted living facility in New York City. He was 73.
His death was announced by the Cinematographers Guild, IATSE Local 600. No official cause was given, but Hart suffered a brain aneurism last year and another crippling health event this week. His family said he died peacefully with his brother Randy and close friend, Gabor Kover, by his side
“As a member of the camera local, Doug was one of our finest camera technicians, working with many of the best camera crews in our business on over 50 feature films, many commercials and several documentaries,” the guild wrote. “Perhaps most notably, he was the ‘A’ Camera First Assistant on ten...

Sir Christopher Lee left us in 2015. In doing so he left even his most rabid fans to spend a good portion of their lives trying to track down all of the films he appeared in since 1946. This Kino Lorber Studio Classics Blu-ray release of director Kevin Connor’s Arabian Adventure (1979) will be a welcome one to his many devotees, especially as it sports a transfer superior to the old Televista DVD issued in 2007. This new transfer is colorful and bright, with very few issues of scratches or speckling and with just enough authentic film grain.
Though a near life-long fan of Christopher Lee’s work, I somehow managed to miss this film when on U.S. release in 1979. I vaguely recall a feature cover story on the film in a very early issue of Fangoria magazine but, perhaps since Arabian Adventure was marketed as a “family film,...

Lewis Rothenberg has been elected to a three-year term as president of the powerful International Cinematographers Guild, ousting incumbent Steven Poster from a post he had held since 2006.
The Icg, which operates as Local 600 of the Intl. Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, reps about 8,600 camera crew workers and publicists and is Hollywood’s biggest below-the-line local.
Rothenberg, who was a digital imaging technician on “Avengers: Infinity War,” 2016’s “Ghostbusters” and “Girl on the Train,” ran on a platform of increasing organizing and member involvement.
“I feel that we need to be less of a top down organization, and that we need to start internally organizing at the grass roots level,” he said in a campaign statement. “If elected, I will look to not only continue the progress that has been made, but also look at expanding it, with more two-way communication between the membership, elected leaders, and staff. I will look for more involvement,...

I admit it, I’m a sentimental old fart. I get choked up and maudlin very often, when I think of family and friends, a moment in time when I realized the tragedy life can bring to us, or the joy. I tear up at the movies regularly, or reading certain passages in books. But I never thought I would weep at the loss of a video system. If you read We Are Movie Geeks regularly you must be aware of the video revolution of the 1980s, when VHS players and recorders found a place in almost every home in America. I hope you recall the early days when VHS was neck and neck with Betamax, a technically better system. Remember the days of Mom and Pop video rental stores when almost anyone could open a store front, and with a collection of VHS tapes start making money? As one of the many,...

A paranoiac Luke Treadaway and a pulp writer in decline star in the two standouts of this diverting half-dozen short films
A half-dozen shorts care of distributor Soda's New British Cinema programme, all diverting, two outstanding. The narrative-short food groups are amply covered: twist-in-the-tale jobs (Douglas Hart's Long Distance Information has splenetic Peter Mullan forming a surprising telephonic bond one Christmas), pun-films (Dan Sully's short, sweet urban legend The Ellington Kid; Romola Garai's straining Scrubber, about a woman juggling dogging with Ocd), zeitgeisty star vehicles (Chris Foggin's agreeably cosy Friend Request Pending, with Judi Dench as a lovelorn silver surfer). The picks are William Jewell's teasing, stylish feature-in-waiting Man in Fear, which conjures a fatalistic universe around paranoiac Luke Treadaway and no-nonsense copper Tim Healy; and Matthew Holness's A Gun for George, a tremendously assured, funny-sad portrait of a pulp writer in decline, which envelops...

How do you build a better hearing aid? Researchers at MIT believe the answer is to bring new eyes to the ears, with imaging technology to make an aid that fits the user perfectly. At present, custom hearing aids are modeled on molds made by injecting silicone into the ear. Douglas Hart, the principal investigator behind a new 3-D digital ear-canal scanner, says there are a number of problems with this antiquated method. First, it's uncomfortable. Second, it can't measure shifts in ear-canal shape when the body moves -- for instance, when patients open their mouths. And third, it doesn't gauge the pliability of the soft tissue, which varies from person to person and can radically affect fit. With the new device, however, Hart says, "we can actually film the 3-D shape of an ear as you chew."
The scanner is essentially a fiber- optic camera inside a liquid-filled mem-brane.
