‘The Chronology of Water’: Will Kristen Stewart’s Directorial Debut and Jim Belushi and Thora Birch’s Supporting Performances Generate Awards Heat?
Image
Okay, now Kristen Stewart is just showing off.

The Oscar nominated “Spencer” star steps behind the camera, writing and directing “The Chronology of Water,” which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. A portrait of pain, rebirth and reclamation, the film’s heartbeat comes from Stewart’s skillful and natural filmmaking. It is bolstered by two veteran actors we haven’t seen do something like this in years, Jim Belushi and Thora Birch.

Adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir, it recounts her story of going from a champion swimmer, to an addict, and later a writer. Stewart’s directorial debut has an avant-garde sensibility that’s part “The Basketball Diaries,” part Terrence Malick reverie, with a dash of Jim Jarmusch’s cool restraint and an undercurrent of rebellion that flows through it. The film benefits by being made from a female perspective that never shies...

Greenwich Entertainment Acquires Matthew Shear’s SXSW Prize-Winner ‘Fantasy Life’
Image
Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Fantasy Life, the debut feature of actor turned writer-director Matthew Shear, which won multiple prizes, including the Audience Award, at SXSW 2025.

No release date was disclosed. Visit Films is overseeing international sales at Cannes.

Shear (Between the Temples) stars opposite Amanda Peet (Your Friends and Neighbors), the winner of a Special Jury Award at SXSW, as Sam Stein, who after losing his job as a paralegal, suffers a panic attack and stumbles into a job babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters. The girls’ mother, Dianne (Peet), is an actor whose once-promising career has stalled; she’s in a difficult marriage to David (Alessandro Nivola), a rock bassist. When David goes abroad on tour, Dianne and Sam discover an easy rapport as well as a shared history of mental illness. Sam joins Dianne’s family to babysit for the summer on Martha’s Vineyard,...

Matthew Shear, Actor-Filmmaker Behind SXSW Prize-Winner ‘Fantasy Life,’ Signs With Gersh
Image
Exclusive: Actor, writer, and director Matthew Shear has signed with Gersh for representation in all areas.

Shear is coming off of his directorial debut with Fantasy Life, an indie comedy he also wrote, where he stars opposite Amanda Peet, Alessandro Nivola, Bob Balaban, Judd Hirsch, and Andrea Martin. The winner of the marquee Narrative Feature Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, Fantasy Life follows a 30-something paralegal in New York who, after getting laid off, starts babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters and falls for their mother, an actress in a rocky marriage. Peet was also recognized for her work on the film at SXSW, earning a Special Jury Award for her performance.

In his review of the film out of SXSW, Deadline’s Pete Hammond suggested that the project establishes Shear as “a triple-threat filmmaker” to watch.

A frequent on-screen collaborator of Noah Baumbach, Shear starred...

Bill Hader and John Mulaney's sketches exhausted some people at SNL
Image
Bill Hader and John Mulaney are among the most prolific performer-writer duos in Saturday Night Live history. But for all their accomplishments together, the pair did find their sketches eventually overstayed their welcome.

Stefon is arguably SNL's most famous character of the past 20 years, and it's all thanks to Hader and Mulaney. The hyper-specific character served as a prime example of the kind of comedy Hader and Mulaney gravitated toward, even if not everyone at Saturday Night Live felt the same way.

“Lorne [Michaels] ... likes a home run hitter," Conan O'Brien said to Hader on Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. "He likes someone who’s gonna go out there, like, ‘Gimme your church lady. Gimme the character that everyone just can’t wait to see,’ softball down the middle.”

That's essentially the exact opposite approach taken by Hader and Mulaney at SNL. O'Brien knew at much, adding he knew Michaels...

Hollywood Icon Nathan Lane Calls New Sitcom "More Important Than Ever"
Image
Mid-Century Modern star and Hollywood icon Nathan Lane explains exactly why the hit sitcom is "more important than ever."

Per Deadline, Lane spoke about the importance of the series during an appearance at the Deadline Contenders TV panel. "It's more important than ever these days now that we're in an authoritarian regime," Lane said, "and all of our rights are under threat."

Created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan and directed by James Burrows, Mid-Century Modern premiered on Hulu on March 28 to largely positive reviews from critics. The series stars Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, who joins his best friends Jerry Frank and Arthur Broussard, portrayed by Matt Homer and Nathan Lee Graham, respectively, in moving to Palm Springs following the death of another close friend. Mid-Century Modern also stars Linda Lavin as Bunny's mother, Sybil, who lets the trio move into her home upon their arrival. Apart from its leading cast,...

How ‘Will & Grace’ Creators Came Together to Reinvent Sitcoms Once Again With ‘Mid-Century Modern’
Image
When Max Mutchnick and David Kohan first partnered on “Will & Grace,” they paved the way with a fresh sitcom that was immediately embraced by queer communities. Now, over two decades later, the duo hopes to reinvent the genre once again with Hulu’s “Mid-Century Modern.”

“I hope we’re able to be a show that breaks the mold of a multicam a little bit in the way that we get to sound a little bit more like the world sounds,” Mutchnick told TheWrap. “The gift of working at Hulu is that we got a chance to graduate to a language and a sound and a cadence that really is more like what we sound like. I hope that that’s one of the things that’s able to stick with this show, which is, it’s a little bit more grown up.”

“Mid-Century Modern” centers on three gay best...

‘Thank You Very Much’ Review: Engaging Doc Showcases Andy Kaufman’s Unique Genius
Image
One of the most memorable highlights of “Thank You Very Much,” Alex Braverman’s consistently engaging documentary about comedy legend Andy Kaufman, doesn’t directly involve Kaufman at all.

Well, technically it does — but in the circuitous, convoluted way that only he could design. It’s an audio recording of actor Judd Hirsch, who is so furious he seems ready to explode. His complaint? That a two-bit, no-talent buffoon named Tony Clifton has taken over the set of his 1970s sitcom “Taxi,” which co-starred Kaufman. The fact that Hirsch knows Clifton is one of Kaufman’s alter egos hasn’t remotely mitigated the problem; he’s genuinely angry at Clifton — a guy who doesn’t, in any traditional sense, actually exist.

If there is a moment that distills Kaufman’s unique genius, surely this is it. In other hands, the whole situation would look like a dopey and inexcusably indulgent prank.

‘Mid-Century Modern’ Review: ‘Will & Grace’ Creators Craft a Raunchy Love Letter to Chosen Family for Hulu
Image
“You don’t look sad … you just look like a reluctant bottom.”

When a new series receives the James Burrows stamp of approval, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hysterical ride. After all, the iconic television director has been at the forefront of some of the most recognizable sitcoms in history, including “Friends,” “Cheers,” “Frasier” and a significant number of episodes of “Will & Grace.” The sitcom genre has seen better days with the invention of streaming services that have practically made the format obsolete, but Burrows keeps chugging along when he finds a show worth investing his talents in.

At 84 years old, Burrows continues his impressive run as sitcom’s greatest living director by taking the helm with a new series from “Will & Grace” creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, “Mid-Century Modern.” Starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and Linda Lavin, the Palm Springs-set series...

Five Famous Sitcoms That Never Got a Proper Finale
Image
Say what you will about the final Seinfeld episode — namely, that it sucks — but at least it had a proper finale. While TV networks can be cutthroat about axing new shows with low ratings, when they cancel a long-running show — say, five seasons or more — they usually give the creators a heads-up so they can plan accordingly.

And, typically, the creators use that final season to build up to a climax and resolution. Say, a big wedding, a surprise pregnancy or a character’s unexpected revelation that gives new meaning and depth to the series. Or they can just call all their old guest stars and parade them into a courtroom set for an unsatisfying glorified clip show offering no new laughs (that Seinfeld finale is truly terrible).

The point is, it’s good to know things are ending, and the long-running sitcoms below clearly never saw that axe falling.

Apple TV+ snagged The Dealer from competitors after a heated bidding war, giving the project produced by the A Doll’s House, Part 2 trio of Sam Gold, Lucas Hnath, and Sarah Lunnie, a straight-to-series order.

Sam Gold directs The Dealer from a screenplay by Lucas Hnath. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, the show presents a “biting exploration of power, class, seduction and culture set inside the glittering world of the high-end art market, told through the eyes of an aspiring super gallerist, played by Jessica Chastain, and the tangled relationship with her most gifted and unnerving artist, played by Adam Driver.”

‘Fantasy Life’ Review: Amanda Peet Sparkles in Matthew Shear’s Low-Key Directorial Debut
Image
If the recent rash of older-woman-younger-man romances have had one thing in common, it’s the emphasis on the first half of that equation. Films like The Idea of You or Babygirl may not have totally ignored the male point of view, but it was purposefully deprioritized against the fantasy of female sexual awakening — the rush of discovery, the anxiety of aging, the sheer fun of hooking up with a pretty young thing.

Against that framing, the SXSW debut Fantasy Life plays, accidentally, like the flip side to that equation, with its focus on his perspective and its less starry-eyed, more downbeat tone. But if the movie does not offer the same kind of pleasure, it serves as an interesting variation on the theme, as well as a worthy discovery in its own right. With Amanda Peet in a remarkable star turn, it marks a promising debut for writer-director Matthew Shear.

‘Fantasy Life’ Review: Amanda Peet Puts a Brave Face on an Uncomfortable Reality in Sensitive Dramedy
Image
It isn’t hyperbole to say that Amanda Peet gives the performance of a lifetime in “Fantasy Life.” There probably shouldn’t be any confusion between the actress and the role she inhabits as Dianne, a one-time screen star now in her early fifties who stopped booking parts a decade ago when the material wasn’t up to snuff. But there’s a wisdom and weariness to suggest Peet’s seen some things, and it can be unnerving to realize that it’s been about as long since she has been on the big screen herself. Her luminous return in Matthew Shear’s lightly comic drama about two people at a crossroads reminds that her fearlessness has been sorely missed as she throws any vanity out the window to play a walking tangle of anxieties, despite living quite comfortably with homes in New York and Martha’s Vineyard.

‘Fantasy Life’ Review: Writer/Director/Actor Matthew Shear Takes His Own Anxieties And Turns Into A Triple-Threat Filmmaker – SXSW
Image
It is probably no accident that among Matthew Shear’s acting credits are no less than four movies directed by New York filmmaker extraordinaire Noah Baumbach, or that one of his most recent is another angst-ridden Jewish comedy, Between the Temples. Clearly he has spent his downtime on those sets soaking up the atmosphere and the comedic beats in preparation for his writing-directing debut Fantasy Life, premiering at SXSW today in the Narrative Feature competition.

Assembling a dream cast of actors who know how to deliver this kind of New York Jewish-centric character-driven comedy that Woody Allen trademarked and others like Baumbach have also travelled in so successfully, Shear actually seems to me to be more of a modern-day Richard Benjamin who also turned into a fine filmmaker in his own right. That seems to be the trajectory here except Shear is clearly cribbing from his own life and experience with depression,...

Amanda Peet Hadn’t Starred in a Movie for a Decade — Until a Fellow Actor Wrote Her an Irresistible Role
Image
Talk about life imitating art, imitating life. About a month ago, Amanda Peet told IndieWire during a recent interview, something funny and mortifying happened to her at the grocery store in front of her two teenage daughters. Someone recognized the actress. Well, sort of. They said hello, and complimented her on her work. And then it became clear that this person “recognized” her as Lake Bell, and complimented her on Lake Bell’s work.

This has happened before. It’s happened enough, in fact, that Peet encouraged her “Fantasy Life” filmmaker and co-star Matthew Shear to include it in his feature directorial debut, in which Peet plays an actress who, yup, often gets mistaken for Lake Bell. It’s funny, and it’s a little sad, and it’s incredibly honest, and it speaks to the spirit in which Shear, a Noah Baumbach regular and former star of the series “The Alienist,...

Hulu's highly anticipated Matt Bomer sitcom is coming sooner than we thought
Image
Have you been missing Matt Bomer on your screen? Well, we're about to get a whole lot more of him when his highly anticipated Hulu sitcom Mid-Century Modern makes its premiere in March 2025. Even though the actor has been known for his drama work, most recently earning an Emmy Award nomination for his work in Showtime's limited series Fellow Travelers, he's prepared to bring the laughs as the lead of a multi-cam sitcom for the first time.

Mid-Century Modern premieres on Friday, March 28 on Hulu. That's much sooner than I imagined Hulu would drop the show! While the premiere's coming up very soon, the release date news gets even better. Hulu isn't releasing the 10-episode season weekly, instead opting for a binge drop. It's great to hear that Hulu learned from its mistake of weekly drops of sitcoms, which killed the momentum of How I Met Your Father, and will...

Mid-Century Modern Signals a Return to Multi-Camera Comedy for Hulu — When Does it Premiere?
Image
Many exciting shows are coming to Hulu over the next couple of months.

The streaming service confirmed on Monday that Mid-Century Modern, its highly-anticipated multi-camera comedy, is one of those and will receive its debut on March 28.

The series will stray from the typical weekly rollout, with the streaming platform dropping all 10 episodes on the premiere date.

(Disney/Chris Haston)

Some shows benefit from the weekly release strategy to keep the conversation flowing, but we’ll reserve judgment on whether a binge release will benefit this series.

“Three Best Friends – gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother,” reads the logline.

“As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done,...

David Lynch’s Last On-Screen Performance Became 1 of the Best Movie Endings
Image
One of the best films of the 2020s and the latest in a long lineage of one of the best filmmakers of all time, Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical masterpiece The Fabelmansis a fantastic piece of self-reflective dramatic storytelling. It follows the childhood of Sammy Fabelman (played by Gabriel Labelle), a young man in the 1950s and 1960s who becomes enamored by the magic of cinema. The story closely mirrors the actual coming-of-age of Spielberg himself.

Though the film features numerous excellent scenes that draw directly from Spielberg's life, one of the most profound comes at the end of the movie, when teenage Sammy Fabelman has the chance to meet the director of such classic Westerns as Stagecoach and The Searchers: John Ford. Ford, played in a final on-screen performance by the late, great director David Lynch, instills valuable lessons into Sammy in a scene that is one of the best endings in recent film.

Anthony Michael Hall Dishes on John Hughes
Image
With news of a potential St. Elmo’s Fire sequel blowing up the internet, all eyes are turning to other 1980s cult classics, primarily Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. In a recent interview with MovieWeb to chat up his gritty role in Season 3 of Reacheropposite Alan Ritchson, Anthony Michael Hall, who starred in both films, told MovieWeb that, “I’ve always tipped my hat to [director] John Hughes.”

“I wouldn't be here without him,” Hall added. “I think of that great Isaac Newton quote about, ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants.’ In my life, John Hughes was that. Harold Ramis was that. Lorne Michaels. I was very privileged at a young age to work with great people. And it's always about that. It's about the company you keep and the collaboration. And of course, your work-life experience.”

A Scrapped Sheldon & Leonard Joke Could Have Changed The Big Bang Theory
Image
In the season 9 finale of "The Big Bang Theory," titled "The Convergence Convergence," Penny and Leonard Hofstadter (Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki) decide to renew their vows after their disastrous Las Vegas elopement in that season's premiere, "The Matrimonial Momentum" (which, as it happens, is one of the lowest-rated episodes of the entire show). When everyone's families gather in Pasadena for the ceremony, something very unexpected happens ... which is that Leonard's father Alfred (Judd Hirsch) and Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) mother Mary, played by Laurie Metcalf, really hit it off. Leonard's mother Beverly, played by Christine Baranski, is also present — and not particularly pleased by this development.

After "The Convergence Convergence" aired in May of 2016, executive producer Steve Molaro spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the potential tryst between Alfred and Mary and what that could mean for longtime best friends Leonard and Sheldon. "I don't know what happened,...

Jules Feiffer, Famed Cartoonist and ‘Carnal Knowledge’ Screenwriter, Dies at 95
Image
Jules Feiffer, the provocative satirist, cartoonist, playwright and 1960s counterculturist who wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ classic Carnal Knowledge and Robert Altman’s Popeye, has died. He was 95.

A Pulitzer Prize winner, Feiffer died Jan. 17 at his home in Upstate New York of congestive heart failure, his wife, Jz Holden, told The Washington Post.

The Bronx native joined such luminaries as Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard, John Lennon and Robert Benton in contributing material to the bawdy 1969 Broadway musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, and he earned a Tony nomination for best play in 1976 for Knock, Knock. Starring Judd Hirsch, it was “a wild spree of jokes, pratfalls, word games, collapsing scenery, falling bodies and burlesque sight gags,” according to The New York Times.

In 1967, his original comedy Little Murders made its Broadway bow with a cast that included Barbara Cook, Elliott Gould and David Steinberg, and Feiffer wrote the screenplay for...

'Such an Original and Unique Voice': Steven Spielberg Pays Tribute to David Lynch
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg opens up about the loss of David Lynch.

Per Variety, Spielberg joined the numerous Hollywood icons who have publicly mourned the tragic death of David Lynch. "I loved David’s films," Spielberg stated. "Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in The Fabelmans. Here was one of my heroes—David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will."

‘A Complete Unknown’ Director James Mangold on Consulting With Bob Dylan, Adoring Pete Seeger and Why Newport ’65 Was Like ‘Thanksgiving Dinner Gone Amuck’
Image
Something is happening here and, given the hoopla over “A Complete Unknown,” probably even Mr. Jones has an idea what it is: Bob Dylan mania. Thanks to James Mangold’s new film, America is currently experiencing a spike of collective fascination with Dylan that probably hasn’t peaked quite this high since 1965, when the events of the biopic wrap up.

Thankfully, “A Complete Unknown” has turned out to be a thoughtful treatment as well as a crowd-pleasing one that, against most odds, seems to be equally bowling over deeply Dylan-informed boomers and younger audiences that might have Timothée Chalamet as their first point of entry into this world. As a filmmaker, Mangold doesn’t try to solve the mysteries of Dylan for moviegoers. But it appears he’s given them something they like even better than easy psychological tropes: electricity.

Variety talked with Mangold about the challenges in structuring the...

39 actors and actresses with the longest gaps between Oscar nominations
Image
In 1982, 76-year-old Henry Fonda finally won a long-overdue Best Actor Oscar trophy, becoming the oldest Best Actor winner up to that time. His last acting nomination had been in 1941, and he held the record for the longest span between acting nominations until 2023. Judd Hirsch broke Fonda’s 41-year record 41 years after it was set, earning his second supporting nomination for “The Fabelmans” 42 years after his bid for “Ordinary People.” Now, one of his former co-stars could possibly break that record.

Hirsch earned two Best Comedy Actor Emmys for the sitcom “Taxi” (1978-1982). Carol Kane co-starred on the series from 1980-1983, also earning two Emmys, one for lead and one for supporting comedy actress. She is now receiving rave reviews for her role in “Between the Temples,” and might be on track to break the record Hirsch broke two years ago. Kane has already earned the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress,...

'It Would Be Excruciating': Jeff Goldblum Reflects on Emotional Independence Day Scene
Image
Many years have passed since Jeff Goldblum starred in Roland Emmerich's classic alien invasion film, Independence Day. The acclaimed star has had many substantial life changes such as having children since the movie premiered in theaters all the way back in 1996, and upon a rewatch of a scene from Independence Day, has found a new emotional connection to the movie he didn't have before.

Per Screen Rant, Goldblum recently rewatched scenes from many of his classic movies in a video by Vanity Fair, which saw the actor reacting to a clip from Independence Day in which his character, David Levinson, says goodbye to his father played by Judd Hirsch. Jeff Goldblum Gets Emotional Rewatching Independence Day's Ending Goodbye With Judd Hirsch 28 Years Later
Image
Jeff Goldblum emotionally reacts to his and Judd Hirsch's Independence Day farewell scene 28 years later with newfound insight as a father. In Roland Emmerich's 1996 sci-fi action movie, Goldblum played satellite engineer David Levinson, who is swept up in an extraterrestrial invasion. Levinson would be part of a two-man infiltration mission to bring down the mothership with a computer virus by disrupting their protective shields, opening the vessel up for a large counterattack.

While promoting his Netflix show Kaos, the actor sat down with Vanity Fair to rewatch some of his most iconic roles throughout his career.

As Goldblum rewatched the farewell between David and his father Julius before the Independence Day ending, Goldblum found himself overwhelmed as he viewed the 28-year-old scene with a new perspective as a father, before celebrating co-star Hirsch for his previous emotional scenes and cinema's power to move audiences. Check out Goldblum's full recollection below:

Sandy Bresler, Jack Nicholson’s Longtime Agent, Dies at 87
Image
Sandy Bresler, who served as Jack Nicholson’s agent and spokesman for more than 60 years, died Thursday in Santa Monica after a short illness, his family announced. He was 87.

Bresler first met the eventual three-time Oscar winner when both were serving in the California Air National Guard. He began representing the actor in 1961 after starting his career as a secretary at the William Morris Agency a year earlier.

Bresler’s clients also included actors Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid and Louise Linton, now wife of film executive and former U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He “established the gold standard for personally curated talent representation,” his family noted.

On July 14, 1969, the day the Nicholson-starring Easy Rider premiered, the agent announced the launch of Sandy Bresler & Associates with an ad in The Hollywood Reporter in which he noted he was the actor’s “exclusive” representative.

Born on Jan. 20, 1937, Bresler was the son of Jerry Bresler,...

We recently hosted a poll asking which TV legend should be the next person to receive the 2025 SAG life achievement award. The overwhelming top choice was Emmy and SAG winner Jean Smart. She received 31.84% of support among the 18 candidates we offered for consideration.

When we offered a similar poll last year, double Oscar winner Barbra Streisand was the top choice, and then she was indeed selected for this honor on the Screen Actors Guild Awards. We created a separate poll earlier this month about film legends with Meryl Streep receiving the most support over Glenn Close, Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange.

The SAG-AFTRA selection committee will likely be announcing their next recipient in the near future. The 2025 ceremony will be live February 23 streaming on Netflix.

Independence Day 3 Chances & Will Smith Return Get Honest Response From Franchise Director
Image
Roland Emmerich may be the king of the modern disaster epic, but the Stargate director is on a different path today. He's into historical epics, as he's currently the executive producer and director of Those About to Die, a Peacock event series about the Roman Empire, starring the legendary Anthony Hopkins. During an appearance to discuss the series on the podcast Bingeworthy, Emmerich briefly discussed his biggest hit of all, Independence Day, and revealed that killing off Will Smith's character in the sequel isn't the biggest obstacle to a third film.

Fans of the original 1996 film were pretty disappointed in the 2016 sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence. Set 20 years after the original, Resurgence finds the aliens returning to conquer Earth. Mankind's technology has evolved in the meantime, but once again, they find themselves overwhelmed by the invaders. Despite the return of Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, the absence of Will Smith is very noticeable,...
