Are you ready for some football? The first look at Nicolas Cage as legendary NFL coach/commentator John Madden, alongside Christian Bale as Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, has hit the gridiron.

As seen in the picture (supplied by Deadline), Nicolas Cage’s John Madden and Christian Bale’s Al Davis are both flaunting Super Bowl rings. As Madden served as the Raiders’ head coach from 1969 – 1978, that would put this picture sometime after the team’s Super Bowl XI victory over the Minnesota Vikings. That would be Madden’s only Super Bowl win, although Davis would go on to win it again in 1981 and 1984 (after the Raiders moved to Los Angeles.

Joining Cage and Bale in Madden will be Kathryn Hahn as John’s wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Al’s wife Carol and John Mulaney as Trip Hawkins, who founded Electronic Arts, the company that launched the prolific Madden...

Nicolas Cage & Christian Bale Join Forces in First Look at Amazon's John Madden Movie
Image
Amazon MGM has unveiled a first look at Christian Bale and Nicolas Cage in their respective roles as Raiders team owner Al Davis and head coach John Madden in its forthcoming biopic, Madden, which officially kicked off production on May 13. At first glance, the actors appear unrecognizable in the photo (seen below), courtesy of Deadline, as they both sport very different appearances, taking to the field as the two NFL legends for the film, which will celebrate the life and career of the titular football coach-turned-broadcaster.

The two actors are pictured side by side, with both men punching their fists out in front of them to show off their sparkling Super Bowl rings, which are awarded to winning teams at the annual sporting event to commemorate their victory. Bale is clean-shaven with his hair styled high and tight, just like Davis' signature quiff, which is quite far removed from the bushy-bearded,...

Never Forget How Much Christopher Nolan Loves ‘Talladega Nights’
Image
When IndieWire dropped a list of Christopher Nolan's favorite movies, I excitedly opened it and scrolled through for an inclusion I would have been devastated not to see. Thankfully, they hadn’t omitted what is my favorite Christopher Nolan fact in his list of favorite movies: The fact that Christopher Nolan absolutely fucking loves the Will Ferrell racing comedy Talladega Nights.

Nolan first shared his love of Ricky Bobby’s adventures on The Rich Eisen Show, when Eisen asked him for a movie that, if it’s on, he’ll absolutely never change the channel. Nolan not only nominated Talladega Nights but went on to call it one of the “great comedies.” High praise, especially considering the fact that most people wouldn’t necessarily call it one of Ferrell’s “great comedies.”

Not that it’s not funny, of course. I think Talladega Nights was put in a bad...

‘SNL’ Is Like A Cult, Says John Oliver
Image
There are so many reasons why a British version of Saturday Night Live is an awful idea, John Oliver told Seth Meyers this week. But the biggest reason SNL should stay on this side of the Atlantic, he says? SNL is like a cult.

“Saturday Night Live is such a unique group. It’s a cult,” Oliver claimed. “I’m trying not to say the word, but it’s a cult. And so I don’t know how you can impose that cult onto the U.K.”

Hang on a second — did Oliver forget who he was talking to? Meyers isn’t only a former cast member of SNL but its head writer for a spell as well. The Late Night host was curious about Oliver’s perspective as an outsider: What exactly was “cult-ish” about his old show?

For starters, Oliver pointed to the SNL ritual of staying up...

Danny McBride Talks ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Finale and His Note for Suburban Movie Theaters
Image
The May 4 series finale of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones marked the end of a grand experiment for its creator and star. Tired of the whiplash that came with shooting his previous series Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals back east, Danny McBride and his wife formally relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, with their two sons in 2017. That’s where he wrote, filmed and finished his end of postproduction on all four seasons of the megachurch comedy.

“Nobody would ever let us shoot in town,” McBride says of Los Angeles. “We were always just barely given permission to do stuff. And we had to find the rebates. It got to the point where it was like, ‘Why are we living in L.A. just to work in a writers room?’ ”

As California production tanks, it’s hard to not look at McBride’s move as ahead of its time. The actor and showrunner,...

4 must-watch movies and series coming to Netflix
Image
It's May, which means with the upcoming warmer months (north of the equator), we get more beachy films. Or, at least, a warmer and fluffier feel as far as the films we see on Netflix. The comedy will be fun, and the drama less emotionally upsetting. Well, maybe.

To be sure, we might get more Beach Bingo-type things than Ironweed. Both are fine films, though one is better suited for winter, while the other is more suitable for summer. We like both, but we need them at specific times of the year.

Which films and series should you stream on Netflix beginning May 1? Here are some suggestions. All will entertain you.

Four gems to stream on Netflix to begin May 2025Ocean's Eleven (2001)

While some might not remember it, this film is a remake of an original that featured Frank Sinatra and others of the Rat Pack. That 1960 film is fun,...

Will Ferrell & Stephen Colbert Sing Rick Astley Hit in Wild ‘Late Show’ Segment
Image
Stephen Colbert and Will Ferrell Rickrolled viewers of The Late Show during a chaotic edition of the “The Colbert Questionert” on Tuesday night’s (April 29) show. Ferrell joined the show to participate in the popular segment, which sees Colbert asking rapid-fire questions to get to know his guests better. Of course, the Anchorman star didn’t take the questions seriously at all, ending with the two comedians performing a hilarious rendition of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The moment came as Colbert asked Ferrell what song he would pick if he could only listen to one song for the rest of his life. After answering “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the Saturday Night Live alum broke into a rendition of the 1980s classic, which resurged in popularity in the 2000s as the bait-and-switch “Rickroll” Internet meme. Colbert soon joined Ferrell for the funny duet, which quickly descended...

Julia Garner is under suspicion in creepy Weapons trailer

Weapons, the horror thriller from director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), got its first trailer, which introduces the highly anticipated film's story. One day, none of the kids in Mrs. Gandy's (Julia Garner) room show up to school, because at 2:17 the night before, they all left their houses and disappeared into the night. According to Cregger, the mystery is just the starting point. "By the midpoint, we've moved on to way crazier s--- than that," he told Entertainment Weekly. The cast also includes Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Weapons opens in theaters on Aug. 8.

‘Despicable Me 4’ Helps Franchise Make History And Is No. 4 On 2024’s Most Valuable Blockbuster List
Image
Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

‘Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie’ Review: The Fabled Stoner Comedy Duo Get Their Own Documentary, and It’s Good Enough to Give You a Contact High
Image
The title of “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie” makes it sound like another of the duo’s agreeably shambolic made-up-on-the-spot-but-who-could-tell-if-it-wasn’t? buddy-comedy rambles. And given their age (Tommy Chong is about to turn 87; Cheech Marin is a relative spring chicken of 78), you could be forgiven for presuming that they wanted to have one last go at the kind of stoner comedy they invented, a form now as mainstream as the cannabis outlet down the block.

But no, “Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie” turns out to be a straight-up (if not always entirely straight) documentary, a film that takes two hours to trace the life and career of these shaggy comic revolutionaries. We hear about their interesting life stories (Chong started off as an accomplished musician in a group signed by Motown; Cheech was passionate about being a potter), their beyond-random meet-up, the evolution of their act, the way they became huger than huge…...

Saturday Night Live celebrated its 50th anniversary in February with a star-studded concert and an A-list primetime special, a “huge moment” for the NBC late-night show.

Ego Nwodim, who joined the cast in 2018 for Season 44, said during Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety event that the three-hour special February 16 felt like “building up to a wedding.”

“All throughout the season, I feel like we anticipated what the 50th was going to be. We didn’t know. I called it an SNL wedding, [even though] birthday is obviously more fitting. It felt like we were having a wedding, and it was like we’re building up to this wedding,” she said. “We had these episodes leading up to the actual 50th celebration, but all the while just knowing, ‘Okay, we’re working toward this thing, and that is going to be such a huge moment.’ You could just feel it in the air.
