We’ve gotten a lot of werewolf movies over the decades and while some of them have been great, it still feels like we should have more great ones to turn to whenever we’re in the mood to watch some lycanthropic action. Lionsgate will be giving a new werewolf movie called Shadow of the Wolf a Digital and VOD release on March 25th, and while we’ll have to wait and see whether or not this one makes its way onto the list of great werewolf movies, we do know that it has a special ingredient none of the other greats have had: the Highlander himself, Christopher Lambert, is in the cast! You can see Lambert and a preview of some of the werewolf action in the trailer embedded above.

"She saw things she wasn't supposed to see." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for the US release of the indie horror film Shadow of the Wolf from Italy. Originally titled L'ombra del lupo in Italian, this is getting a VOD release in March after first premiering in 2018 years ago (and opening already in Italy at the end of 2020). Christopher Lambert and Maria Grazia Cucinotta star in a chilling tale of horror. When Nico returns from overseas to say farewell to his ailing mother in Italy, he discovers something monstrous is happening in the small town he once called home. As the list of grizzly murder victims begins to grow and the authorities fear the killer is a beast unlike anything that they have ever seen (you mean - a werewolf?), Nico senses a savage transformation within himself and uncovers the terrifying secret his family could never reveal. Another werewolf spin?...

Nava Mau earned an Emmy nomination (in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category) for her breakthrough performance as the lead character’s love interest Teri in the hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer, and was named as a 2024 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort. We’ve previously heard that she will be following up her Baby Reindeer success with a role on the final season of the Netflix series You, and now Deadline has broken the news that she’s set to star in the comedic thriller The Dregs – which has something to do with a cursed wine bottle.
Before appearing on Baby Reindeer, Mau played the role of Ana on 16 episodes of the Max streaming series Generation. (16 episodes also happens to have been the show’s full run.)
Set in Tuscany, The Dregs will mark the directorial debut of writer Connor Martin. Filming is expected to begin in Italy next March.

The following contains spoilers for The Simpsons season 36 episode 2, "The Yellow Lotus," now streaming on Hulu
The Simpsons brought back Sideshow Bob for season 36, which highlights a long-standing hole in the character's supporting gallery. Introduced in season 1 as Krusty's sidekick, Sideshow Bob first stepped into the spotlight in that season's "Krusty Gets Busted." Since then, Bob has returned multiple times to bedevil the Simpsons and Springfield as a whole. In that time, Bob has also developed a minor supporting cast of his own, which includes members of his family who share his homicidal tendencies. However, those characters eventually faded into the background alongside countless other guest stars and minor players in The Simpsons' world.
Season 36's "The Yellow Lotus" highlights this problem with the way it brings back Bob. Still played by a perpetually game Kelsey Grammer, Bob has a minor but important role in the episode. This episode...

Italian auteur Mario Martone, who was recently in Cannes with “Nostalgia,” is set to direct a high-profile doc about the late Massimo Troisi, one of Italy’s most beloved comic actors who starred in the Oscar-winning film “Il Postino.”
Troisi, who played the simple postman who rides his bicycle on the sandy terrain of an Italian island to deliver mail to his sole client, the Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, died tragically of congenital heart failure at age 41 in June 1994, the day after “Il Postino” finished shooting at Rome’s Cinecittà studios.
The film directed by Michael Radford, which also starred Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Philippe Noiret, became an arthouse sensation one year later when it opened in the U.S. distributed by Miramax.
“Il Postino” went on to win an Oscar in 1996 for best dramatic score, having earned five nominations, including for best film, as well as best director for Radford,...

In Italy, which is suffering the biggest coronavirus outbreak in Europe with more than 350 deaths, box office crashed to an all time low of €439.000 over the March 5 weekend frame. Or rather, the portion of the weekend prior to Sunday May 8.
On Sunday the government ordered a total shutdown until at least April 3 of all movie theaters. Prior to Sunday, roughly half the country’s screens – those in the less affected central and southern regions – had been allowed to stay open, provided spectators sit three seats apart in what turned out to be a short-lived Italian experiment.
Battered by all these impediments, Italy’s March 5 frame repped a roughly 90% plunge in grosses compared with the same period in 2019 and a 79% drop compared to the previous weekend, which had already been a total bloodbath.
The top title was Berlin prizewinner “Hidden Away,” the biopic of eclectic painter Antonio Ligabue that recently scored...

China’s streaming and online games companies have received a boost from the cancelation of seven major film releases that were expected to have dominated the Chinese New Year holidays, and the enforced closure of the country’s cinemas.
Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, and a dozen other Chinese cities are under government-mandated lockdown, causing tens of millions of people to cancel their travel plans and stay at home instead. That has handed the initiative to streaming companies.
Social media postings suggest that millions of people are stuck at home – some in cities under lockdown, others simply benefiting from the extra three days holiday mandated by the Chinese government – playing games and watching movies online.
The New York-traded shares of games and online entertainment firms have defied the recent stock market downturns and made modest gains. Streamer iQIYI closed the Thursday trading session at $22.43 per Adr, compared with $20.80 on Friday.

Golden Globe-winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emile Hirsch, Paz Vega, and Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Jeremy Piven will star in American Night, a neo-noir thriller helmed by first-time film director Alessio Jim Della Valle.
Written by Della Valle, the plot follows Michael Rubino (Hirsch) who has just become the Don of the New York Mafia, but his greatest dream is to devote his life to painting and become a great artist. John Kaplan (Meyers), an art dealer, may feel like his life is in shambles, but he still has the best eye for spotting fakes in the world. Their paths, apparently distant, cross when Andy Warhol’s Pink Marilyn is stolen, setting off a series of unexpected events that upend their lives.

Welcome to the penultimate installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the twelfth episode, “Isabella," coming up just as soon as I buy you some sweat socks at The Sports Authority... "To tell you the truth, I feel pretty good." -Tony I'll be honest: even though I'd never specifically recapped these early "Sopranos" seasons, I've written so much about the show over the years,...

Directed by Federico Zampaglione from a script he wrote with Giacomo Gensini, based on a story by veteran Italo-horror scribe Dardano Sacchetti, Tulpa stars Claudia Gerini as Lisa, a businesswoman who leads a secret night life of sexual exploration and experimentation, centered on the titular nightclub. When her lovers start getting brutally killed, she undertakes her own investigation to avoid exposing her carnal activities. Michele Placido and Nuit Arquint (Shadow’s memorable villaing Mortis) co-star; Leonardo Cruciano created the makeup FX, and actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta (whose credits range from The Day Of The Beast to The Rite) was one of the producers.
Tulpa, which we first reported on here, screened last year at London’s FrightFest in not-quite-completed form. “We knew what worked in the genre,” Zampaglione says, “but we were also aware of its shortcomings, and that is why we test-screened a rough cut of the film to an audience at Frightfest.

It's been close to a year since we've had any sort of update on Federico Zampaglione's Tulpa, but today we have a few screenshots and more to share on the Italian Giallo homage, which begins a five-week shoot in Rome on March 5th.
First, however, on February 25th Zampaglione will screen the opening sequence of Tulpa in Glasgow at the Film4 Frightfest.
Tulpa is based on a treatment penned by Dardano Sacchetti (The Cat o' Nine Tails, A Bay of Blood, City of the Living Dead and many more masterpieces) and then developed by Federico Zampaglione with Giacomo Gensini.
The film, which promises a lot of extreme gruesome death scenes, is about Lisa Boeri (Claudia Gerini), a rich businesswoman totally devoted to her work. She is alone, without any serious relationship, and while during the day she is almost a cold money machine, at night she becomes another person. Every...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Indican Pictures
Director: Joseph Tito.
Writers: Joseph Tito and Silvio Oddi.
Cast: Natasha Allan, Daniel Baldock and Maria Grazia Cucinotta.
Release Date: Sept. 20, 2011 (DVD).
The problem with the movie Death of the Virgin is that it does not quite know what it wants to be. There are elements of a psychological horror, the underpinnings of artistic expression, a potential ghost story and a question of faith to be explored. All of them can blend together into a powerhouse product like The Omen. But when the tale is not clearly defined and the characters are as flat as a pizza, where this movie goes is uncertain.
This film can travel anywhere, including making a quest for the meaning of life. Three maidens make a trip on a bus to go find it, and they arrive at Caravaggio, an Italian monastery.

Dread Central is always on the lookout for intriguing new information to share with our readers. So when an email arrived informing us of a supernatural thriller that was the equivalent of "The DaVinci Code meets The Exorcist", of course we sat up and took notice.
The film being described is none other than director Joseph Tito's Death of the Virgin. It's been an official selection of the Toronto and Rome International Film Festivals. And if the trailer is any indication, this religious-themed horrific thriller certainly looks to be able to deliver on the whole DaVinci Code/Exorcist thing.
Starring Maria Grazia Cucinotta (Rite, The Postman (Il Postino), James Bond – The World is Not Enough), Daniel Baldock (Letters to Juliet, Pope Pius Xii, Pillars of the Earth, Go Go Tales), Linda Valadas (Novellas Morangos Com Acucar, Detective Maravilhas, Tu E Eu) and Natasha Allan (Take Your Place (Prenez Vos...

There are supernatural happenings whirling about the art of Caravaggio in Death of the Virgin.
At first glance, the horror-thriller film Death of the Virgin looks like it could appeal to both lovers of 16th Century Italian art and devilish and violent supernatural movies. Hmmmm….
Here’s what the movie’s all about:
In 1432, an apparition of the Virgin Mary appears in the sleepy town of Caravaggio, becoming the inspiration for the gruesomely beautiful paintings of the artist, Michelangelo Merisi — better known as Caravaggio.
Five centuries later, in modern-day Italy, three women travel to Caravaggio: Lisa (Jennifer Healy), an aspiring art student; Claudia (Maria Grazia Cucinotta, The Rite); a sexy Italian translator; and May (Natasha Allan, Blue Bird), a young woman about to enter the nunnery. Their world is quickly turned upside down when the apparition reappears and May becomes plagued by premonitions of shocking murders.

With a price on his head, Carvaggio fled to neighbouring Italian cities, where he himself was attacked in an assassination attempt. He would die a year later. Although it doesn.t come close to the scares provided by The Exorcist or even the moderate chills provided by The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Rite does manage to give a goose bump or two thanks to the performance from Anthony Hopkins and the use of its Rome setting. Based on Matt Baglio's book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, The Rite was directed by Mikael Håfström (1408 and the underappreciated Derailed) and sees Hopkins joined by Colin O'Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, and Marta Gastini. It also features a chilling performance from Rutger Hauer (who manages to be the creepiest part of the movie without even really seeming to try).

Inspired by true events, this supernatural thriller follows a seminary student (Colin O'Donoghue) sent to study exorcism at the Vatican in spite of his own doubts about the controversial practice and even his own faith. Only when sent to apprentice with legendary Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who has performed thousand of exorcisms, does his armor of skepticism begin to fall. Drawn into a troubling case that transcends even Father Lucas's skill, the young seminarian glimpses a phenomenon science can't explain or control - and an evil so violent and terrifying that it forces him to question everything he believes.
