Why Jack Wagner Didn’t Want To Star On Melrose Place After General Hospital
Image
Jack Wagner joined General Hospital as Frisco Jones. When he left, he thought his soap opera past was behind him. He had no interest in joining Melrose Place. At first, he nearly skipped the audition.

Soap Opera Strike

Wagner reflected on his acting career during his interview on the Still The Place podcast. He spoke to hosts Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga, and Laura Leighton about his audition for Melrose Place. Wagner almost didn’t star on the sexy primetime drama. He didn’t want to do another soap like Gh.

It wasn’t the genre that he was against. Wagner feared that he would get typecast. When his agent suggested the role as Dr. Peter Burns, he tossed the thought aside. Wagner was asked to audition for the show. His initial reaction was, “No chance. I’m not doing it. It feels like a soap.”

Then, there was one thing that changed his mind.

‘Melrose Place’ Stars Daphne Zuniga, Laura Leighton and Courtney Thorne-Smith Reflect on Crazy Story Lines, Rewatching Their Younger Selves and the Show’s Best Kisser
Image
It’s been three decades since Melrose Place debuted on Fox — and Mondays haven’t mellowed one bit. They’re still a bitch.

Since last July — though not always on Mondays — Melrose Place stars Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga and Laura Leighton have been reuniting weekly for their iHeartRadio podcast, Still the Place. Each episode takes a nostalgic stroll down 4616 Melrose memory lane, as the trio revisits and recaps their old episodes.

“It was pre-cell phone, it was pre-streaming, it was appointment television. It’s when you got together to watch a television show with your friends so you could remember watching a show where you were in your life and who you were with,” Leighton says. “And that’s a unique thing we don’t get any more with television.”

Their journeys often include candid conversations with former castmates, including Thomas Calabro, Andrew Shue, Grant Show, Vanessa Estelle Williams, Doug Savant,...

In a recent podcast, Melrose Place co-stars Jack Wagner and Josie Bissett opened up, saying they want to work on another Hallmark movie together.

What is it about these movies that makes the co-stars want to make another together? Meanwhile, they probably aren’t alone, as Andrew Walker, Tyler Hynes, Cindy Busby and Peter Benson also starred.

Lucille Ball Kick-Started Her Acting Career With A Dramatic 1980s TV Movie
Image
While Lucille Ball is etched into the side of Sitcom Mount Rushmore, by the mid-1980s, the TV comedy well had run dry. Check out her acting IMDb in the 1980s — it’s a complete blank for the first half of the decade. She’d been off TV since a bit in a Cher variety special in 1979. Sure, she had plenty of residuals to keep the lights on, but she “wanted to go back to work because I like to work," she told The Abbotsford News, as reported by MeTV.

“I had no idea what I wanted to do until I saw my first shopping bag lady in New York,” Ball confessed. “When I started passing her and not giving a second look, I got worried that something was wrong with me. The lady had become part of the scenery, and I wasn’t caring. So when CBS called and...

Malls, Mayhem, and Murderbots: Celebrating ‘Chopping Mall’ and the Horrors of Retail
Image
On this day in 1986, a gang of sassy teens snuck into the Park Plaza Mall for a night of partying, hook-ups, and maybe a little light property damage. Unfortunately for them, the mall’s new security system wasn’t just state-of-the-art, it was armed, dangerous, and very eager to enforce after-hours rules with deadly precision.

Welcome to Chopping Mall, the gloriously schlocky sci-fi slasher that gave us killer robots, exploding heads, and the absolute blueprint for shopping mall carnage in horror cinema.

Directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by Roger Corman’s wife Julie Corman, Chopping Mall took a simple premise – teens locked in a mall with killer security droids – and ran full-tilt into cult-movie gold. With laser-eyed ‘Protectors’ going haywire thanks to a freak lightning storm, the film delivers a perfect cocktail of ‘80s neon, gore, and robot death-ray madness.

But what’s endured just as strongly as the...

"What Would Be the Actual Core of the Story?": Jack Wagner Expresses Concerns Over ‘Melrose Place’ Reboot
Image
A revival of the beloved '90s daytime soap opera, Melrose Place went into development at CBS in early 2024. The announcement revealed that original stars Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga were onboard to reprise their respective fan-favorite roles. There's since been no concrete update on the status of the revival, and it appears things might be stalling in development. However, the show could feature another original member as Jack Wagner, who played Dr. Peter Burns, has expressed openness to reprising his role in the reboot. Wagner, who, these days, is best recognized for his role on Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart, equallyhighlighted a key challenge the reboot must overcome.

40 Years Later, ‘Vision Quest’ Is Still a Great Sports Movie — with a Wild Horny Streak
Image
Before you read a 40th anniversary piece about the 1985 film “Vision Quest,” it would be malpractice to not watch star Matthew Modine as Louden Swain jogging along in a rubber suit to the sounds of Journey’s “Only the Young.”

Anyway, you’re in luck, here’s a link to that scene right now:

“There’s a song from a band named Pony Up, they wrote a song called ‘Matthew Modine,’” said Modine during a recent interview with IndieWire, reflecting on this particular scene. “And they talk about me running in my jogging suit and how they want to sexually violate me. It’s a filthy song, but it’s really funny. It came out when my son was in high school and he was just absolutely horrified because all his friends were listening to it. That’s not what you want to hear.”

No, if you’re Matthew Modine’s son,...

Wicked Star Ariana Grande Has Been Offered A Role In The Spaceballs Sequel
Image
There's been talk of a potential Spaceballs sequel for many years, and we recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Mel Brooks' '80s Star Wars spoof is officially in the works.

The movie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Josh Gad set to star and produce alongside Brooks. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.

Gad aside, no cast members have been announced, but we're now hearing that the studio has reached out to a major up-and-coming star for an undisclosed role in the movie.

In THR's profile of Wicked star Ariana Grande, the trade mentions that the recent Academy Award-nominee has been offered a number of roles which she has yet to commit to, including a part in Spaceballs 2.

"A disaster wedding comedy, a female detective romp set in a Housewives-style reality show, and a Spaceballs sequel.

Ariana Grande Reportedly Offered Role in 'Spaceballs 2'
Image
Ariana Grande has been the talk of Hollywood lately thanks to her standout performance as Glinda the Good in last year's Wicked. This awards season, she's up for multiple trophies, including Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, where she'll compete against the likes of Zoe Saldaña and Isabella Rossellini, to name a couple. Her stock has risen so much that now the former Nickelodeon star is apparently being offered a slew of roles, including one in the upcoming Spaceballs 2.

According to a new in-depth profile on Grande published by The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and singer is so hot right now following the success of Wicked that she's been approached about numerous follow-up roles. These include, the profile says, "a disaster wedding comedy, a female detective romp set in a Housewives-style reality show, and a Spaceballs sequel." However, Grande, now 31, isn't too eager to just accept anything that comes her way.

Mel Brooks Got a Hilarious 'Star Wars' Refresher for 'Spaceballs 2'
Image
When Mel Brooks made Spaceballs, he didn’t need a Star Wars refresher course; it had only been a few years between Brooks' 1987 film and the end of the original Star Wars trilogy in 1983. However, when Josh Gad recently pitched a sequel to the comedy classic, nearly 40 years had passed along with countless films, shows, games, and books in the Star Wars franchise. Brooks was the first to admit that he hadn't exactly kept up with the galaxy far, far away. So when Gad pitched Spaceballs 2, he had to do so while also bringing the famed filmmaker and comedian up to speed, which seems like a Herculean task.

Gad revealed on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast that getting Brooks' approval for the project (and having him sign on as a producer) required the Frozen star to engage in a frenetic, one-man, 40-minute pitch. Gad elaborated to host...

Horror for the Holidays: 1980s Slashers ‘The Dorm That Dripped Blood’ and ‘Trapped Alive’
Image
As fall turns into winter, and a chill enters the air, horror fans begin to feast on their favorite holiday horrors. Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are all seasonal staples, and more contemporary offerings, such as Krampus and Better Watch Out, have become new classics. Yet for additional helpings of festive frights, perhaps the following double-feature could be considered; both The Dorm That Dripped Blood and Trapped Alive even hail from the decade where Christmas Horror, as a subgenre, began to take shape and resemble its more modern form.

The Dorm That Dripped Blood also goes by Pranks, The Third Night, and Death Dorm. The later title is what appears on the source print for Synapse Films’ uncut restoration, however, the longer name is what sticks best, even for those who have never seen this 1982 obscurity. And for a lot of folks who have watched the film,...

Doug Savant, who played Matt Fielding, a gay character on Melrose Place, recently explained why he avoided discussing his own sexuality while on the show. He felt it was important to stay true to the role he was portraying.

On the Still The Place podcast, Savant talked with former co-stars Laura Leighton, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Daphne Zuniga about the challenges of playing a gay character as a straight actor during a time when TV had very little representation.

When we were shooting all those things and the trailers for the show, I said to Sam, our publicist, ‘Do you care to talk about how we’re going to handle this going forward, that there was a gay character?'”

I knew it was exceptional, and I thought people would be interested. But she goes, ‘Well, no, it’s not a big deal. You’re an actor, you’re just playing a character.

‘Melrose Place’ Actor Doug Savant Explains Why He Dodged Questions About Being Straight While Playing Gay Character On TV

Melrose Place‘s Doug Savant recalls why he evaded questions regarding his sexuality while playing gay character Matt Fielding on the ’90s sudsy teen drama, saying he “felt a responsibility” to not distance himself from his on-screen portrayal.

Spaceballs 2 Draft Script is Done; Josh Gad Hails Working with Mel Brooks on Legacy Sequel
Image
Spaceballs 2, the sequel to Mel Brooks' 1987 satirical space opera, was announced earlier this year and, from the sounds of it, things are getting closer and closer to the starting point thanks to writer Josh Gad, who recently provided fans with one heck of a galaxy-sized update. Gad famous for voicing the character of Olaf in Disneys Frozen franchise is penning the script along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu), and will also star in and produce the long-awaited follow-up, which also has Brooks on board as a producer, and Josh Greenbaum (Strays) sitting in the director's chair.

Sitting down with Forbes to discuss his new comic book series, The Writer, Gad was asked what he could share about the progression of Spaceballs 2, which hails from Amazon MGM Studios. No release date has been set, and while he couldnt go into too many details thanks to being...

A Spaceballs sequel is currently in the works with Josh Gad on board to star, produce, and co-write the script. While not many details are yet known about the new film, it's sounding like some new information is soon to be announced.

In a new interview with Forbes to promote his Dark Horse comic, The Writer, Gad shared a big update on the project. He confirmed that there's a finished draft of the screenplay for Spaceballs 2 that's left everyone who's seen it so far feeling "blown away." Stressing that he's spending "every hour of every day" working on the sequel, Gad hinted that the film will soon be ready to start with production.

Mel Brooks
Everyone who's read the script for Spaceballs 2 has been "blown away"
Mel Brooks
In 1987, comedy legend Mel Brooks released Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars that pit space rogue Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his furry companion Barf (John Candy) against the vile Darth Helmet (Rick Moranis). Star Wars mania had by no means abated by that point — Return of the Jedi had come out four years before — but Spaceballs didn't get its own cult of fans until it came out on home video, which is how watched it when I was a tiny baby in the 1990s. I actually think I watched Spaceballs before I watched Star Wars, and it's still probably first in my heart.

Brooks made a couple of attempts over the years to get a sequel to Spaceballs made, but nothing took; according to Forbes, Moranis once pitched him on a movie called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II, but it never came together. And so a couple...

Josh Gad Teases ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel Script: “Everybody Who’s Read It Has Been Blown Away”
Image
Josh Gad is working on a sequel to Spaceballs alongside Josh Greenbaum and Mel Brooks.

The actor will produce and star in the film for Amazon MGM Studios and recently revealed that the script’s first draft had been completed.

“Without MGM taking me into their Culver prison cells, I can tell you that the draft is done,” Gad told Forbes. “Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”

Gad says the whole experience has been “sort of a fever dream” and noted that Brooks “has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away.”

“It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen. I can’t say more than that,...

Bethany Joy Lenz on Escaping a Cult, Losing All Her ‘One Tree Hill’ Money and Fighting to Keep Her Daughter From That Life
Image
Fifteen months ago, during a recap episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, guest Michaela McManus asked co-hosts Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush whether they’d ever write a book. Lenz responded that she often writes, and that she would love to tell her story. And then she revealed to listeners something shocking about herself. “I was in a cult for 10 years,” she said. “That would be a really valuable experience to write about — and the 10 years of recovery after that. There’s there’s a lot to tell.”

Four weeks later, she talked about the experience at length for the first time, speaking with Variety over Zoom. As she sat outside her Nashville home, we spoke for 45 minutes about the shame she felt, how her “One Tree Hill” cast tried to help and how she ultimately overcame the fear she had about leaving the group.

Spaceballs 2 Director Confirms Sequel Will Mock Divisive Disney Star Wars Trilogy
Image
Yes, a Spaceballs sequel is now in the works, with director Josh Greenbaum now offering some insight into what audiences can expect from this long-awaited (but perhaps unnecessary?) follow-up to the Mel Brooks comedy classic. In a new interview with Esquire, Greenbaum confirmed that spaceballs 2 will be a true sequel, and will poke fun at more modern science fiction. Particularly the Star Wars franchise.

Theres been a ton of Star Wars content. Its just exploded beyond the fact that there have been not three but six Star Wars films madeand thats just in the Star Wars universe. So theres a lot of new [material to satirize], but we also certainly focus on continuing the old, so it is a true sequel.

There has, of course, been a whole lot more Star Wars stuff since the before times of 1987, with Disney now in charge of new movies and shows. The House of Mouse...

‘Killer Heat’ Review: Okay Greek-Island Noir, With Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley in the Tale of a Murderous Love Triangle
Image
A good tasty noir, like “Love Lies Bleeding,” always feels contemporary, even if set in the past; that’s because it should feel as urgent as the love-and-death stakes it’s about. “Killer Heat,” on the other hand, while not quite so old-fashioned that it creaks, definitely plays like a mirage of detective noirs you’ve seen before. To start with: Could there be a worse title? It makes the movie sound like some straight-to-tape potboiler from the ’80s starring Jim Belushi and Daphne Zuniga. “Killer Heat” opens with the voice of its star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who has a way of sounding like Keanu Reeves’ brainier brother), delivering one of those logy “hardboiled” philosophical nuggets to the audience (“The Icarus myth was set on the island of Crete. And apparently no one there had learned much from his story…”).

But just as you’re ready to nod out, Gordon-Levitt, as...

Daphne Zuniga Had Some Serious Fun Making ‘Spaceballs’ With Mel Brooks
Mel Brooks
Image Source: Amazon Fortunately, at the age of 98, Mel Brooks can still be called a living legend. Between his film, television, and recording careers, he’s been entertaining us for decades, giving us classics like The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and the Star Wars parody Spaceballs. And since Star Wars has stood the test of time, so has Spaceballs, which is still finding new audiences today. Image
One Tree Hill is coming back, as lead actresses Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton confirmed. The two are set to reprise their roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer and the news brought happiness to not only the show's fans but the original stars, as well.

One Tree Hill, which originally aired on The WB and later on The CW, came from controversial creator Mark Schwahn. Mel Brooks’ “Spaceballs 2”
When writer/director Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" comedy spoof of "Star Wars" was first released in 1987, fans of the 'space opera' genre were delighted with the film, but most reviewers dismissed the feature as lame 'shtick', thinking the whole "Star Wars" 'thing' had run its course and best left forgotten. ...and Phil Hartman as 'Dink'.

But Bill Pullman as 'Lone Star' and Daphne Zuniga as 'Princess Vespa' are still working.
