Cannes Caméra d’Or Winner Anthony Chen Begins Production on ‘We Are All Strangers,’ Completing His ‘Growing Up’ Trilogy (Exclusive)
Image
Exactly 12 years after winning the Caméra d’Or at Cannes with his debut feature “Ilo Ilo,” Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen has begun production on “We Are All Strangers,” the third and final film in his acclaimed “Growing Up” trilogy.

The project reunites Chen with actors Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, who starred in both previous installments of the trilogy, 2013’s “Ilo Ilo” and 2019’s “Wet Season.” Set in contemporary Singapore and spanning two and a half years, the film is Chen’s most ambitious work yet – an epic story capturing intimate moments of love, life, and coming of age in the city-state.

“I filmed Jia Ler at 11 and then again at 17, so it felt like a natural step to capture him approaching adulthood,” Chen said of his continuing collaboration with the young actor.

The director explained his thematic focus: “I have always been fascinated by the bonds and...

Why Rogue One's Jyn Erso Didn't Appear In Andor Season 2, Explained By Andor Showrunner Tony Gilroy
Image
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy reveals why Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) does not appear in season 2. With the second and final season of the critically acclaimed series taking place in the four years leading up to the events of Rogue One, there was speculation about whether Jyn would join the Andor season 2 cast. The season features multiple references to Jyn's father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), and to the planet Eadu where he is stationed, but Jyn does not make an appearance and is never referenced.

While speaking with Backstory Magazine, Gilroy shares that when crafting season 2, he considered everything, including the possibility of Jyn appearing. He praises Jones as an actor and individual, emphasizing that he would have loved to work with her again, and that he was aware of the many fans who wanted to see her return. However, Jyn does not appear because Gilroy did not see a feasible...

Andor: Cut Mon Mothma storyline changes her entire season 2 arc
Image
From getting her scenes cut in Revenge of the Sith to becoming a lead cast in what is undoubtedly the best Star Wars TV show, Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma has come a long way. Despite being a Rebel Alliance High Council member, Mon was barely noticeable in the prequels and was overshadowed by Padme Amidala and Bail Organa in the few episodes of The Clone Wars in which we see her.

But Andor forces you to sit up and take notice of this soft-spoken yet strong-willed Senator with irrefutable faith in democracy, who does not shy away from calling a spade a spade, or in her case, a genocide a genocide.

In Andor Season 2, Mon is rescued from the Senate by Cassian (Diego Luna) and taken to the Coruscant safehouse after her open defiance of the Empire in a rousing speech. From there, she is expected to make a...

‘Lucky Lu’ First Look: Lloyd Lee Choi’s Directorial Debut Confronts the Fallacy of the American Dream
Image
How much luck does one need to make it in America? Lloyd Lee Choi’s feature directorial debut “Lucky Lu” confronts the tenuous nature of achieving the American Dream, as the indie centers on an immigrant delivery messenger (Chang Chen) whose life is upended after his bike is stolen.

Choi wrote the script as an expansion of his short film “Same Old,” which premiered at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition and went on to screen at TIFF with a Special Jury Mention and New York Film Festival before winning Best Short at Raindance. “Lucky Lu” now debuts at Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight as a buzzy sales title. Indie filmmaker turned Marvel mainstay Destin Daniel Cretton produces the feature.

The official logline reads: “‘Lucky Lu’ follows a New York City delivery rider whose world is turned upside down when he loses his only source of income. With...

Andor Showrunner Tony Gilroy Says There Were Early Discussions About A Princess Leia Cameo
Image
Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has revealed that he did consider including a cameo from one of the original Star Wars trilogy's leads, Princess Leia Organa, in the second season, but the idea was ultimately scrapped.

"There were some conversations early on, there was much to be made. This is in the sketching stage," Gilroy told ScreenRant. "This is in the really soggy beginning, trying to figure out what to do because trying to figure out, I was trying to make that Investiture Week I idea. I was trying to get the most out of that investiture week and those parties, and we have Alden's party now… and we're making a thing out of it. And we were trying to find out on the timeline where she would be in the Senate."

While an appearance from either Luke Skywalker or Han Solo wouldn't have made much sense, Leia was already...

How Italian Cafes, French Housing, and Sushi Inspired the Look of ‘Andor’
Image
Production designer Luke Hull and set decorator Rebecca Alleway brought the vast scope of Andor’s second season to life with 180 sets, half of which were built from scratch.

The production used a number of real locations in the U.K., Spain, and Italy: Valencia’s futuristic City of Arts and Sciences building was transformed into the Senate complex, while England’s Greenham Common became the Rebel hideout used by Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). Shots of Lake Como, Italy, were used to augment the planet of Ghorman and farmers’ huts...

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

Final Destination: Bloodlines (In Theaters) Credit – Warner Bros.

Final Destination: Bloodlines is a supernatural horror film co-directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein from a screenplay co-written by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor. The 2025 film is the sixth entry into the Final Destination film franchise, and it follows a college student who saves the lives of many people who were supposed to die,...

Andor season 2 was incredible, but I still wish we got to see these 4 storylines
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Andor season 2.

Andor Season 2 is a remarkable and moving work of art. It is one of the best all-time seasons of any show, and not just in Star Wars. The structure of every three episodes taking place in a different year, leading up to the events of Rogue One, could have felt disjointed. However, the season ends up feeling mostly seamless in its transitions and becomes a deeply satisfying continuation and conclusion to the story that began in Season 1.

While Season 2's structure overall works incredibly well, there are a few times where I could not help but think of the original five-season plan that Tony Gilroy had in mind. There are some storylines between or during each three-episode arc that I would have loved to see further explored. Given the nature of the Star Wars franchise, there is always a chance of these...

Andor Season 2 Echoes A Star Wars Rebels Moment That Makes Saw Gerrera Even More Tragic
Image
Revolution is not for the sane, but it is for those who have watched the season 2 finale of "Andor," because there are heavy spoilers ahead.

Much like "Rogue One" before it, part of the magic of "Andor" is seeing how much nuance and context it gives to the space opera of the original trilogy. It turns what is a rather simple story of good guys rising up to fight an evil empire into a complex tale of morality, detailing the hardship of resisting oppression and fascism, and the personal cost of standing up for others. Thanks to this show, the Empire is now a much more recognizable thing than it was before -- no longer just a collection of mustache-twirling villains, but an everyday evil. (The kind that meets in fancy snow resorts to plan a genocide and then hides it through propaganda.) The Ghorman massacre arc in the second...

Andor Season 2 Almost Featured A Cameo From A Major Star Wars Character
Image
"Andor" might be officially over, but the reactions, revelations, and discussions surrounding the most acclaimed live-action "Star Wars" series ever certainly aren't going anywhere anytime soon. After spending years getting to know Diego Luna's Cassian Andor with far more subtlety and nuance than "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" ever had time for, we now know exactly what made him into the hardened Rebel operative we saw in the 2016 movie. Yet, even this sprawling, 12-episode final season had quite a few surprises up its sleeve -- not all of which ultimately made the final cut.

Creator and writer Tony Gilroy has been making the press rounds lately (including a recent conversation with /Film's very own Ben Pearson), and in one particular interview, he opened up about his original plans for a major original trilogy cameo that was simply not to be. The timeline of "Andor" allowed quite a few...

Andor Creator, Genevieve O’Reilly Discuss Mon Mothma’s Series-Ending Make-Under: ‘There’s Not a Great Salon on Yavin Yet’
Image
Having played Mon Mothma: Low-Maintenance Rebel Alliance Leader in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (as well as in mostly deleted scenes from 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith), Genevieve O’Reilly knew throughout her Andor run that a major make-under awaited her at the end of the Disney+ prequel series.

“We always knew that that’s where she had to be,” O’Reilly notes in the TVLine video below. But what made the “return” of that circa-Rogue One Mon Mothma fun is how Andor Season 2 leaned into the senator and mother-of-the-bride’s glam self.

Spring Breakers 2: Cast, Plot & Everything We Know So Far
Image
Harmony Korine's 2013 film "Spring Breakers" is a time capsule of the early 2010s -- a time when James Franco was still a big-name movie star and Skrillex's brostep bass wobbles soundtracked all of the cool parties in town. Starring Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, the film follows four college students who turn to a life of crime after meeting Alien (Franco), a drug dealer who convinces them to wear pink balaclavas, carry machine guns, and dance to Britney Spears power ballads.

Considering that Harmony Korine was banned from "The David Letterman Show" for causing mischief, it makes sense that he'd create a movie about renegades wreaking havoc. That said, "Spring Breakers" also taps into the universal feeling of being young, carefree, and wanting the party to last forever -- themes most of us can relate to, even if we didn't grow up listening to...

Andor Season 2 Tragically 'Erases' The True Creator Of The Rebel Alliance
Image
Major spoilers ahead for "Andor" season 2, up to the series finale.

"Andor" is not only the best "Star Wars" experiment in decades, it's arguably the timeliest and most poignant TV show currently airing. This is a harrowing portrayal of the evils of fascism and how genocide can happen right under everyone's noses. It is also a phenomenal story about the cost of revolution and the sacrifices made in the fight against tyranny.

Showrunner Tony Gilroy builds on the world introduced in "Star Wars: Rogue One," which showed us the dirty side of rebellion: the assassinations, the spying, and the mistrust. It is a show about the extraordinary effort required to start the spark that will eventually light the fire that will burn the Empire down. We've seen the idealism of Karis Nemik (Alex Lawther), who genuinely believed in the purity of the struggle and tried to inspire others with his manifesto.

What happens in the ‘Andor’ finale, and how it leads into ‘Rogue One’
Image
Warning: The following piece contains spoilers about Andor Season 2.

It feels paradoxical that Andor is over. On the one hand, creator Tony Gilroy and his team have been working on the series since at least 2020, with various delays in production and release caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes, so now all that work has finally paid off. On the other hand, how can the most acclaimed Star Wars show be over after only two seasons, when other big-scale genre shows last for years and years?

But because the end of Andor ties so directly into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which runs right into the original Star Wars, the show is now part of a chain of epic storytelling beyond any release.

One result of that connectivity is that Andor viewers have known how titular hero Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) will die since before the show began.

This iconic Rogue One reference was never supposed to be in Andor season 2
Image
One cannot accuse Tony Gilroy of being a hardcore Star Wars fan, but fortunately for us, his son is. Sam Gilroy, who plays Gerdis of the Maya Pei Brigade in Andor Season 2, is why a major Rogue One reference made it to the script.

While Andor has been one of the franchise's grittiest, most ambitiously real projects, the showrunners haven't forgotten to connect Cassian's (Diego Luna) story to the overarching lore of Star Wars. From paying tribute to Star Wars Legends events like the Rakatan Invasion or the Tarkin Massacre on Ghorman, to tying Mon Mothma's Senate speech to Star Wars Rebels, fans have been treated to Easter eggs well.

One such was the phrase: "Rebellions are built on hope."

We first hear Cassian say it to Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) in Rogue One when they are in Jedha City on their way to Saw Gerrera's (Forest Whitaker) hideout,...

Utopia Acquires ‘Megadoc’ On Making Of Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’
Image
Utopia has acquired North American rights to Megadoc, a new documentary on the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Megalopolis, which premiered a year ago at Cannes before going on to a nationwide theatrical release via Lionsgate.

The doc, from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas), will be released in theaters this fall.

The making-of project emerged from a chance encounter, sparked by an email between two old friends, with Coppola inviting Figgis to the Megalopolis set in the lead-up to the first day of principal photography and granting him permission to document whatever he wished. Armed with a small camera and crew throughout the entire shoot, Figgis’ unrestricted access to the production gave way to Megadoc, a unique look into the creative process of one of the most revered directors of all time, and behind the curtain of the most ambitious film of his career.

“Francis gave me access to everything,...

‘The King of Kings’ Hits One Last Milestone as Theatrical Run Starts to Slow
Image
There has rarely been a time as promising as now for faith-based movies. With The Chosen: Last Supper trilogy and other Dallas Jenkins properties proving biblical adventures are as popular as ever, it's true that the release of Seong-ho Jang's The King of Kings was perfectly timed. Massively surpassing many people's expectations as to what it could achieve, Jang's tale of Charles Dickens (Kenneth Branagh) and his young son's trip to the past as they witness the life of Jesus Christ, voiced by Oscar Isaac, has been an almighty hit, even hitting another major box office milestone despite its theatrical run slowing down.

In total, The King of Kings has now surpassed the $65 million mark globally, split between $59.1 million in domestic revenue and $6.8 million from overseas markets. Not only is this enough for it to overtake DreamWorks' big-budget animated financial failureThe Road to El Dorado domestically, it also...

Gareth Evans Gives 3 Reasons Behind Havoc’s 4-Year Delay: “It was just a perfect storm…”
Image
After years of waiting, Gareth Evans’ action thriller Havoc has finally stormed onto Netflix in all its grit and glory. Starring Tom Hardy as a battered detective navigating the dirty underworld, the film has delivered bone-crunching action that will compel audiences to physically get up and sit on the edge of their seats. The rawness of each action sequence has been a wonderful delight for fans.

Yet, its journey to release was not without a few major bumps in the road. The project was apparently initially wrapped in October of 2021, but it faced a 4-year-long delay before its celluloid debut in 2025. In a candid interview, director Evans has described the ordeal as a “perfect storm” of hindrances. So, what exactly kept this high-powered, action-thriller on the shelf for so long?

Andor Season 2 Explores The Extreme Ends Of The Rebel Cause Like Never Before
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Andor."

The latest season of "Andor" has been steadily gaining momentum, with its first six episodes already laying a sturdy foundation for the inevitable. It is certainly not easy to sustain tension when the end of an arc is a foregone conclusion, which is very much the case with Cassian (Diego Luna), who dies a martyr in "Rogue One." Although Cassian's fate is written in stone, we still care deeply about his evolving ethics in "Andor" and how he will arrive at his preordained future. Moreover, "Andor" has never shied away from the visceral discomfort of being part of the rebel cause, which comes with its own set of moral conundrums that demand constant and unflinching sacrifice. As a result, the Rebellion means something different for everyone, even if the end goal is to topple the Empire for good.

Although Cassian and Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) are still aligned,...

Image
Aaron Eckhart has signed on to star in The Old Man in the Dunes, an “inspirational thriller” from Angel Studios, the faith-based distributor behind Sound of Freedom and The King of Kings.

Andor Star Kyle Soller On Syril Karn's Fate During Episode 8's Devastating Battle - Spoilers
Image
After obsessively hunting Diego Luna's Cassian Andor since the very first episode of Andor, Syril Karn finally got his hands on the Rebel pilot in season 2, episode 8 - but a moment's hesitation ended up costing him everything.

Towards the end of "Who Are You?," Syril learns the truth about the Empire's evil plans for Ghorman, and stumbles through the protestors in a daze before catching sight of Andor just as he's about to assassinate Dedra Meero.

Karn brutally attacks the man he views as his sworn enemy, ultimately managing to gain the upper hand when they are both knocked down by a nearby grenade blast. Syril is about to shoot his nemesis, but Andor's question - "who are you?" - causes him to hesitate, and he is shot dead by revolutionary leader Carro Rylanze.

A sad end for a pathetic, but fascinating character who realized far too late that...

Andor season 2 episode 8’s big death explains a major Rogue One absence
Image
Just as Tony Gilroy’s Andor gets into its stride, it’s time to accept that the story is nearly over. While the first season played out over 12 thrilling episodes set in year 5 Bby (Before the Battle of Yavin), the final season has leaped through the galaxy far, far away at breakneck speed. Even though we’ve enjoyed having our own mini Star Wars movie every week, releasing three-episode blocks, with each covering a different year, means there’s been a lot to pack in.

Gilroy previously told Empire how Andor will lead directly into the events of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As well as Diego Luna leading the charge as the titular Cassian Andor, Rogue One alumni including Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), and Bail Organa (recast with Benjamin Bratt) are neatly knitting things together. The question is, what...

New Thriller With 44% Rotten Tomatoes Score Dethrones Tom Hardy’s ‘Havoc’ on Netflix
Image
Once in a while, a non-English language comes to Netflix that blows the viewers’ minds, and fans have found the movie of the season. German language movie Exterritorial has dethroned Tom Hardy’s action-packed feature Havoc in its second week. Exterritorial is an action feature, starring Jeanne Goursaud as a mother and former soldier whose son vanished inside a US consulate, and she does everything to find him. The movie has been at the top spot in 74 countries. In contrast, Hardy’s Havoc, another long-awaited action flick, enjoyed the top spot for a week and is now on #2.

The film, directed and written by Christian Zübert, follows a former Special Forces soldier, Sara (Goursaud), who is turning a new leaf as she heads to the US Consulate General in Frankfurt to obtain a work visa. She and her son, Josh (Rickson Guy da Silva), are planning a move to America...

Blown Away: The Best 90s Action Movie You Never Saw!
Image
The Story: A mad Ira bomber (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes prison and travels to Boston, where he stalks his former protégé (Jeff Bridges) who now has a new identity and is a member of the police bomb squad.

The Players: Director: Stephen Hopkins. Writers: John Rice, Joe Batteer, and Jay Roach. Starring: Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Forest Whitaker, and Suzy Amis (Titanic). Score by Alan Silverstri (The Avengers).

The History: Blown Away was supposed to be the sleeper hit of 1994. It had all the ingredients. Tommy Lee Jones had just won the Oscar for playing U.S Marshal Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive, and this would be his first full-on bad guy part since Under Siege, which was an unlikely megahit towards the end of 1992. It also had Jeff Bridges in full-on action hero mode for the first time in his career. While Bridges is now regarded as a beloved character actor,...

Andor Season 2 Episode 8 Makes The Destruction Of Alderaan Look Like Child's Play
Image
Be ready to give up all chance at inner peace and make your mind a sunless space if you haven't watched episode 8 of "Andor" season 2, because there are major spoilers ahead.

One of the biggest magic tricks "Andor" pulls is make you forget it's a prequel. The problem with prequels is that, by knowing what's coming, the tension disappears. How can you surprise the audience when they know where things are headed? Where the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy focused almost entirely on just showing the origin of characters we knew and how they ended up where the audience first met them, "Andor" (and "Rogue One" before it) have a similar approach to the balancing act of the masterpiece that is "Better Call Saul."

Though we know where Cassian (Diego Luna), Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) end up, the surprises and tension rest on those characters whose fates we don't already know.

1 Year After Series Exit, Former Chicago Fire Star Talks Playing Real-Life Gangster in Godfather of Harlem
Image
Rome Flynn, who portrayed Derrick Gibson in NBC's Chicago Fire, recently spoke with Cbr about playing a real-life gangster. Flynn plays Frank Lucas in Season 4 of Godfather of Harlem.

Speaking with Cbr's Brittany Frederick, Flynn acknowledged how different playing Frank Lucas is compared to his Chicago Fire character. "Very different approaches, both equally challenging in [their] own way," he said of the shift from being a hero to an antagonist. "But this is a lot different. Procedural is a lot more technical, a lot more by the book. For this show, it's about the details, but a lot of it's unpredictable, and it's written in that way too. So very different forms."

While playing Frank Lucas is challenging, Flynn also shared how much he learned from his time on Chicago Fire. "I've found a heavy level of appreciation for our essential workers," he revealed. "They're heroes of our communities, and...

‘Havoc’ Is Now One of Tom Hardy’s Lowest-Rated Movies As the Rotten Tomatoes Score Continues To Plummet
Image
Tom Hardy’s new action movie, Havoc, has only been streaming on Netflix for a couple of weeks, but it has been anything but well-received by general audiences. After debuting with a solid critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed like Havoc was heading in the right direction, but fans have been much harsher on the film than reviewers. Hardy’s Havoc finished last week with a 40% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since dropped to 37%, which makes it one of Hardy’s 10 lowest-rated movies ever. While the film was promoted as a bone-crunching, no-holds-barred action thriller, audiences have criticized the weak writing of the characters and overuse of CGI during fight scenes that detracts from any realistic feel.

Havoc was written and directed by Gareth Evans, who is best known for his work on The Raid: Redemption and its sequel, The Raid 2. Evans also recently worked on...

It has beaten Den of Thieves: Panterra and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 20th Anniversary re-release to achieve this notable at this year’s highest-grosser list. 'Havoc' Director Says Tom Hardy Asked Him About a Sequel to the Netflix Action Hit
Image
The following contains spoilers for Havoc.Director Gareth Evans entered the Netflix arena with the high-octane ultraviolent offering that is the recently released Havoc. Starring Tom Hardy, the film impressed action fans across the globe, who reconnected with the director's peculiar manner of executing the genre. Naturally, the next question that comes to mind is whether Havoc could get a sequel, and, per Evans' claims, the most important player at the moment is open to returning. Hardy has asked Evans about a sequel and even juggled some ideas for the director to consider.

Evans sat down with The Playlist for their podcast The Discourse, and he shared a few details about the Netflix movie that also stars Forest Whitaker and Timothy Olyphant. The director highlighted how he bonded with the actor, and he revealed that Hardy's Mad Max: Fury Road may have been a strong inspiration for the movie:

For Chris Brancato, co-creator and showrunner for Godfather of Harlem, if there is a show that can hold a mirror to some of the volatile issues gripping America today, the MGM+ series — now in its fourth season — just may be the one.

That wasn’t, however, intentional. Brancato and co-creator Paul Eckstein weren’t out to make political statements with the series, but it so happened that the Godfather of Harlem chronicles the latter part of the life of legendary Harlem gangster Ellsworth Raymond “Bumpy” Johnson (starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker) during the chaotic 1960s. This was a time of not just high-profile crime families ruling the streets of New York, but also a time of civil unrest and the height of the Civil Rights Movement.

There were leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. espousing his doctrine of passive protest regarding the injustices that plagued Black Americans for hundreds of years.

New Biblical Movie Crosses Major Global Box Office Milestone On 2025 Chart
Image
While they are not always popular in the mainstream, faith-based movies have the potential to do well at the box office. Some of these titles are overtly religious, such as the 2024 Alan Ritchson drama Ordinary Angels. Other titles that get looped in the faith-based subcategory are less overtly God-infused but still resonate with Christian messaging. One such success is Sound of Freedom, a 2023 movie about a government agent who attempts to rescue children from child traffickers. Sound of Freedom made a remarkable $250.5 million at the worldwide box office.

2025 has already been strong for Christian-centric works. Episodes of the Biblical series The Chosen: Last Supper were released in theaters and performed remarkably well, given that they were also slated to hit the small screen. These episodes ended up making just shy of $25 million worldwide, makingThe Chosen the no. 30 highest-grossing title at the 2025 box office. Now, another faith-based title is succeeding at the box office,...

‘The King of Kings’ Is Poised Overtake One of DreamWorks’ Biggest Global Box Office Bombs
Image
Considering how well Christian-themed movies have done in recent months, Mel Gibson may be relieved about the box office prospects of his planned sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The animated film The King of Kings exceeded all expectations in its box office run, which was timed around the Easter holidays. It has emerged as the highest-grossing Korean production in domestic box office history — yes, it's a Korean production — while earning over four times its reported budget at the global box office.

With $57 million domestically and over $6 million from overseas markets, The King of Kings has generated nearly $64 million worldwide so far. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, the religious-themed film is around $1 million shy of passing the lifetime global haul of The Road to El Dorado, a big-budget DreamWorks animated film that tanked upon release in the year 2000, but has developed a cult following. In fact, The King of Kings...

Netflix Action-Thriller With Only 37% Audience Score Beats Tom Hardy's New Film in the Charts in Just 1 Day
Image
Netflix might have gained popularity as a studio with popular series like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Bridgerton, but the streamer has also focused on giving a platform to foreign titles. After Squid Game's undeniable success, Netflix further branched out with many new foreign films and TV shows that were extremely popular online.

Netflix non-English language movies have received millions of views in the past year, with Under Paris reaching the top of the charts, and being joined in the Top 10 list by this year's French action movie Ad Vitam and Mexican military film Counterattack. It also found success with titles like Revelations, the Swedish limited series The Glass Dome and the Dutch thriller iHostage. Now, the bilingual German-English action thriller Exterritorial beat Tom Hardy's Havoc to the top of the charts after just one day on the platform, per FlixPatrol.

Exterritorial premiered on Netflix on Apr. 30, just five days after Havoc.

How to watch Andor season 2, episodes 7, 8, and 9 release date
Image
Star Wars: Andor episodes 4-6, “Ever Been to Ghorman,” “I Have Friends Everywhere,” and “What a Festive Evening” bring us to the halfway point of Season 2.

Week Two was a masterclass of worldbuilding, introducing the audience to the world of Ghorman and their rebels. While Cassan Andor doesn’t think they’re ready for the Rebellion, Luthen Rael wants them to fail. Neither of them knows that Isb agent Dedra Meero is setting up Ghorman’s supposed wins so the Empire has a reason to put their boot down on the planet. They need it to mine a special mineral on the planet for the Death Star, but it would basically destroy the world. After our heroes lost Cinta Kaz, as she helped Vel Sartha train the Ghorman rebels, it’s setting up an explosive Week Three.

We’ll have to see what happens next.

Below is how you can...

Andor Creator Reveals How the Star Wars Series Laid the Groundwork for Saw Gerrera's Rogue One Condition
Image
Saw Gerrera's body was in dire shape near the end of his life, and Andor helps plant the seed for how he reached that point.

Following his Season 2 return, showrunner Tony Gilroy told Entertainment Weekly the ulterior purpose of Gererra deliberately breathing in rhydonium fumes, as it sets up the oxygen mask he requires during Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's events. "The Saw Gerrera thing in Rogue, he has the mask and he's huffing that thing all the time. And people always ask, 'What is that?' I'm like, 'I don't really f---ing know what it is! What is it?,'" Gilroy explained.

This foreshadowing element, he added, was drafted by writer Beau Willimon, with Saw's episodes also linking his tenuous bond to rebel leader Luthen Rael through the constant fuel-gathering operations. "What if Luthen gave him a chance to steal fuel, wherever it was? What a...

Andor season 2's big recast should be an important lesson for Star Wars
Image
It’s hard to believe that there are just six episodes of Tony Gilroy’s Andor left, but as we scooch closer to the events of Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, some familiar faces from the galaxy far, far away are sure to stop by. Andor season 2 has already brought back Ben Mendelsohn’s villainous Orson Krennic to expand the Imperial director’s backstory, while Alan Tudyk is confirmed to reprise his role as K-2So. There are whispers we could see more of Mads Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso, and although the idea of Felicity Jones popping up might be a pipe dream, the fact that Andor is confirmed to collide with the start of Rogue One means anything is possible.

More than just old favorites, Andor has juggled his plenty of newcomers with a starring role for Diego Luna’s titular 'rebel scum”. Standouts like Stellan Skarsgård...

The #1 Most-Watched Movie on Netflix Today Is an Action-Packed Highly Violent Thriller
Image
Netflix debuted the new action thriller Havoc last Friday. And the film has already established itself as the most-watched title on the platform in the days since. Judging from the marketing materials, Havoc looks like a gritty actioner that throws back to the exploitation output of yesteryear. Critics are already drawing comparisons to early John Woo, with many praising the fight choreography and dynamic action sequences.

Havoc writer/director Gareth Evans came onto our collective radar with the scrappy action picture The Raid: Redemption and from there he went on to write and co-direct the V/H/S/2 segment ‘Safe Haven.’

Evans is quickly making a name for himself in the genre space. On many of his projects, he takes a producing credit, a writing credit, and a directing credit. Having a role in multiple steps of the filmmaking process is a good way to maintain a higher level of creative control.

Andor Season 2 Just Recast a Major Star Wars Character (& Here's Why)
Image
The following contains minor spoilers from Andor Season 2, Episode 6, "What a Festive Evening," now streaming on Disney+.

Another beloved character in the Star Wars galaxy has just been recast. In the sixth episode of Andor Season 2, Bail Organa made a quick appearance; however, it wasn't long-time portrayer Jimmy Smits in the role of the rebellion hero, but Benjamin Bratt.

In "What a Festive Evening," as Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) and her husband Perrin (Alastair Mackenzie) are on their way to a party, they are greeted by Bail Organa, who is on his way out. The episode marked the first appearance of Bratt in the role of the familiar character, whose casting came as a result of Smits being unavailable during production on Andor Season 2. "We couldn't work it out," showrunner Tony Gilroy told Entertainment Weekly. "The scheduling didn’t work out. We really tried hard, but he wasn't available and couldn't make it.

‘Andor’ Season 2 Latest Episode Has a ‘Godfather’ Level Plot Twist, Kleya’s Mission Is the Stuff of ‘Star Wars’ Legends
Image
The second season of Andor is now in full swing, reaching its midpoint in just two weeks. For better or for worse, episodes are dropping in batches of three, and the latest set delivers a fascinating look at life under the Empire as several Rebels gather on Ghorman, resulting in two major plot events.

One of the key events puts Kleya in a perilous situation as she must undertake a daring mission in the most adverse circumstances. Meanwhile, another subplot sees Saw Gerrera transform into an almost Don Corleone-like figure, leading to a Godfather-like twist. Here is everything you need to know about two of the most understated actions in Andor season 2.

Andor season 2 gives Kleya a legendary Star Wars mission

Andor season 2 episodes 4 to 6 primarily revolve around Ghorman, with Cassian and Bix infiltrating the Empire-occupied planet to run a mission for Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård). Meanwhile, Luthen and his...

Andor Season 2 Finally Explains Why Saw Gerrera Needs His Breathing Device In Rogue One
Image
Looking back, Saw Gerrera was always waiting for "Andor" to arrive. One of the last new Star Wars characters created by George Lucas himself, Saw debuted in season 5 of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and returned much older and more paranoid in "Rogue One," played by Forest Whitaker. Saw has always been a favorite among a certain subset of fans, bringing an intensity and radical revolutionary sensibility that's often missing in Star Wars. But the writing of "Andor," which embraces that same sensibility throughout, is where the character has really been able to shine.

Saw's appearances in "Andor" season 1 primarily showcased his ideology as a revolutionary leader, and that's mostly true so far in season 2 as well. But in addition to fantastic monologues about the cause, "Andor" season 2 also finally gives us an explanation for the complicated breathing apparatus Saw uses in "Rogue One."

By the time we meet him in that film,...

‘Andor’ Week 2: Revolution Is Dirty Business
Image
This post contains spoilers for Episodes Four through Six of Andor Season Two, now streaming on Disney+.

Forest Whitaker makes his first appearance of the season as our old friend Saw Gerrera in this week’s trio of episodes. He is as paranoid as usual, but, like the saying goes, is it paranoia if they — in this case, a member of his own resistance cell — are out to get you? Yet in the midst of his usual erratic, intimidating behavior(*), there’s also a bit of the romantic. As he...

Now We Know Why Tom Hardy Fights Like an Animal in Movies
Image
Be it Pigs and Whistle in Legends, a barren wasteland in Mad Max: Fury Road, or an old wooden cabin in Havoc, seeing Tom Hardy fighting in films gives us this one thought: ‘If you ever come across a guy like this, don’t even plead, just run.’ Because, one, he won’t listen; two, if he gets you, you are done. The English actor was recently seen in Gareth Evans’ street-level John Wick-esque film, where he plays a corrupt cop, Walker, on mayoral candidate Beaumont’s (Forest Whitaker) payroll, trying to save the politician’s son.

Recently, Hardy and Evans appeared in a chat with Letterboxd, one of the most beloved communities among moviegoers, where the former shared how he brings that animalistic personality into those fearsome fighting sequences. He said:

With fighting, I always look for an animal. I think of animals like the orangutan or the gorilla,...

The Starship Fuel Rhydonium In Andor Season 2, Explained
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Andor" season 2 and the wider "Star Wars" universe.

The latest season of "Andor" is as (if not more) deliberate and audacious as its predecessor. Episodes 4-6 constitute the second arc of the story, intensifying tensions across the galaxy -- from the anxiety-tinged events in Chandrila to the disastrous fate that is yet to befall Ghorman. Episode 5 primarily tackles Cassian Andor's (Diego Luna) involvement with the budding Ghorman Rebellion, underlining the amateurish unpreparedness of a rebel group that isn't fully cognizant of the risks that come with the cause. On the flip side, we have Saw Gerrera's (Forest Whitaker) paranoia-tinged hold over D'Qar, where a trapped Wilmon (Muhannad Bhaier) is reluctantly aiding his schemes. Gerrera delivers a tragic revelation to Wilmon towards the end of the episode, reminiscing about his horrific struggles on Onderon while referring to the starship fuel Rhydonium as his "sister."

There are dense layers to the statement,...

Andor Recasts Legacy Star Wars Character — Find Out Who, and Why
Image
Though Disney+’s Andor series — a prequel to the 2016 motion picture Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — has been pretty great about casting continuity, at least one legacy character is now sporting a brand-new face.

Midway through Episode 6 of Season 2 (now streaming on Disney+), Senator Mon Mothma (played by Genevieve O’Reilly) and her husband Perrin (Alastair Mackenzie) got gussied up to tour the art collection of shady Chandrilan financier Davo Sculdun aka their daughter Leida’s new father-in-law. En route to the VIP experience, they ran into Mon’s colleague, Senator Bail Organa.

Andor Season 2 Brings Star Wars Fans Back To A Familiar Sequel Trilogy Location
Image
Spoilers ahead for the second arc of "Andor" season 2.

During the dark times of the Empire, when the Alliance to Restore the Republic was nothing more than a dream of an idea, the rebels are little more than cockroaches scattered across hidden coverts in any nook and cranny they could find across the galaxy. Each disparate part finds a place to hide and sticks there as long as they can until they have to move on.

Sometimes, these groups bubble up on their homeworlds, like we saw in the first season of "Andor" with Ferrix. "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" showed us Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) building a base on the planet Onderon as his partisans transition from fighting against the Separatists to fighting the oppression of the Empire from their hiding spots. In the second season of "Andor," we see some of the rebel elements move to other locations.

Tom Hardy's Havoc's Rotten Tomatoes Score Hinted the Audience Hated the Film (But It's a Hit on Streaming)
Image
Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.

The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.

Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Havoc entered the top 10 in 93 countries,...
