Istvan Szabo’s ‘Sunshine’ Lights Up Cannes, Restored Version ‘Brings Out the Most Minute Details’
Image
István Szabó is bringing some “Sunshine” to Cannes Classics.

His 1999 historical epic, starring Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, John Neville and Jennifer Ehle, followed generations of a Hungarian-Jewish family until the mid-20th century. No stranger to Cannes thanks to award-winning “Mephisto” (which also picked up an Academy Award) and “Colonel Redl,” Szabó wrote the script with Israel Horovitz.

The full 4K digital restoration of the film was “prepared especially for Cannes,” reveals Nfi’s Filmlab director Viktória Sovák.

“The frames of the 181-minute-long film were partially corrupted and dotted with large white spots. During color grading, carried out with [the film’s original] cinematographer Lajos Koltai, the opportunity arose to make minor adjustments to the digital material that were not possible at the time it was shot. His greatest pleasure came with being able to bring out even the most minute details, which was impossible in the analogue era.”

Overall, Szabó’s nine feature...

James Foley, Director of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Fifty Shades,’ Dies at 71
Image
James Foley, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker who collaborated with A-list stars like Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Madonna and Mark Wahlberg across a 30-plus-year career in film, TV and music videos, has died. He was 71.

Foley’s rep said Thursday he died “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a yearslong struggle with brain cancer.”

Born on Dec. 28, 1953, and raised in New York, Foley graduated from high school and went on to study film at New York University followed by USC in Los Angeles. It was during his final year of film school that a chance meeting would change the course of his life and jump start his career behind the camera.

“I was very lucky, and in the perverse calculus of Hollywood I was in the last year of film school and shared a house with a guy. There was a woman who was pursuing my friend so we had this film school party,...

Image
James Foley, the longtime filmmaker known for directing “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “At Close Range” and the two “Fifty Shades of Grey” sequels, died this week at age 71, TheWrap has learned.

The director had been privately battling brain cancer over the last year. He died earlier this week peacefully in his sleep, a spokesperson said.

With mainstream international hits “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed” topping his years-long resume (and the latter marking his last film), Foley is also known for feature films “Fear,” “Who’s That Girl” starring Madonna (a frequent collaborator) and “The Chamber.” His work in television included “Billions,” 12 episodes of “House of Cards,” “Hannibal” and “Twin Peaks.”

He is survived by brother Kevin Foley and his wife Mary Anne Myers; sister Eileen Foley; sister Jo Ann Foley; and nephew Quinn Foley.

His body of work is wide-ranging, genre-hopping and eclectic — a fact that was not lost on...

Image
Tomas Alfredson’s anticipated psychodrama “Séance on a Wet Afternoon,” starring Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”), has been boarded by FilmNation ahead of the Cannes Film Market. Domestic rights are being repped by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance.

Penned by “Adolescence” writer Jack Thorne, “Séance on a Wet Afternoon” is based on Mark McShane’s bestselling 1961 suspense novel of the same name. Weisz will star as Myra, a self-proclaimed medium who convinces her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family so she can lead the police to the “missing” child and legitimize her psychic abilities. When Myra’s true intentions come to light, however, Billy realizes her plan threatens to consume them both.

The novel was previously adapted into a critically acclaimed 1964 film starring Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley, who earned a best actress Oscar nomination for her performance.

Thunderbolts Leaves Out an Important MCU Character, But David Harbour Says a Deleted Black Widow Scene Provides Answers
Image
Thunderbolts* features the Marvel Cinematic Universe return of several characters that fans had not seen since their initial appearances. Unfortunately, one important character with close ties to David Harbour's Red Guardian and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova wasn't able to make her way into the movie.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Harbour opened up about Rachel Weisz's absence in Thunderbolts* as Black Widow character Melina Vostokoff. While Weisz was at one point rumored to appear in the crossover movie, the actor was ultimately nowhere to be found, although Harbour is keen on seeing Melina reunite with the Red Guardian in a future MCU movie. "I’ve talked to [Marvel] people about Melina, and I think there’s still very much potential for Melina," the actor shared.

Harbour continued, "It’s funny, when we shot Black Widow, there was no time for this scene in the movie itself, because the...

Thunderbolts* Director On Replacing Steven Yeun As The Sentry; David Harbour Pushed For Rachel Weisz's Return
Image
Thunderbolts* originally cast Invincible and The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun as The Sentry, marking a reunion for him and Beef director/executive producer Jake Schreier.

Scheduling issues caused by 2023's Hollywood strikes led to Yeun dropping out of the MCU movie, with Lessons in Chemistry actor Lewis Pulman later taking over the role of "Bob." That wasn't the only change, as Geraldine Viswanathan also replaced Ayo Edebiri.

Talking to Fortress of Solitude, Schreier revealed whether the change led to any alterations in the script and how The Sentry is portrayed in Thunderbolts*.

"From a writing perspective, not a lot [changed]," he confirmed. "I think what you always want with any actor is to explore what points of connection they find with that character, and so it was a new process with Lewis, who is so open and so committed to figuring out all the levels of that character. And it...

Paul Rudd Explains How He Accidentally Flashed an Off-Broadway Audience
Image
On a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast, Paul Rudd shared the story of an embarrassing theater mishap where he inadvertently flashed an Off-Broadway crowd, which earned snickering from the audience at the time and greatly amusing hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes.

In Monday’s episode, Rudd recalled the moment when he realized something was amiss during the 2001 production of “The Shape of Things” with Rachel Weisz.

“I was lying on top of a bed and I was wearing boxer shorts and a T-shirt and all of a sudden — this had never happened before — I heard the audience laughing,” said the actor. “And I’m like, what is going on? I realized it’s because I was lying on the bed and I had my leg up and I realized my balls were hanging out. Which is worse than actually, like even your penis. When it’s just your balls.

‘Thunderbolts*’: Florence Pugh and David Harbour Talk Absent ‘Black Widow’ Stars and Pretending to Be Tom Cruise
Image
As Florence Pugh and David Harbour enter into the home stretch of the Thunderbolts* press tour, a couple of key absences are on their minds from their collective MCU debut in 2021’s Black Widow.

When Pugh joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yelena Belova, she was introduced as the heir apparent to Scarlett Johansson’s outgoing Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. After all, Johansson’s character had died two years earlier in Avengers: Endgame, as her sacrifice played a key role in the Avengers finally taking down the almighty Thanos and restoring the population he blipped out of existence, including Yelena herself.

Johansson’s long-overdue solo movie was then meant to shed light on Natasha and Yelena’s origin story and also pass the torch to Pugh’s adoptive sister character. In the early ‘90s, they spent three years together in Ohio, posing as the daughters of Russian operatives Alexei Shostakov...

The 5 Best & 5 Worst Movies About Ancient Egypt
Image
While the world has been fascinated with the mysteries of ancient Egypt since Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon stole all the credit for the glorious reveal of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 from the local diggers and historians, the truth of those mysteries rest better in the hands of Egyptians today. And there are still mysteries and wonders aplenty, from the way its colorful mythology slowly blended — syncretized — with the Roman occupiers that gradually wore away the country's golden monarchy, to its early understandings of science and math that remain lost.

It's a tough period of time for amateur historians who love the occasional pop culture dive; unlike other history buffs with their Medieval costume dramas and the upcoming Christopher Nolan-helmed version of "The Odyssey," there's not much that truly digs into the dynastic periods of Egypt. It's mostly Biblical-era epics, the occasional Roman overlap, and some hilariously bad science fiction...

Film Quiz Friday | Turner And Who?

One of this week’s new releases stars Steve Coogan and a penguin, so here’s a film quiz about other actors and their animal co-stars.

They say you should never work with children or animals, but that’s not stopped movie stars teaming up with animal co-stars. There are usually mixed results – even the can’t-lose buddy pairing of “Tom Hanks and a French mastiff” definitely didn’t end happily for both of them (spoilery details here). Now in UK cinemas, Peter Cattaneo’s new movie The Penguin Lessons teams up Partridge and penguin, so we’ve got some quiz questions about other live-action animal star vehicles as part of your usual movie-related trivia safari.

Once you’ve completed this week’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun,...

A Thunderbolts* Scene is Hiding 2 Surprise Characters Yet to be Revealed, Everyone Thinks It’s Just ‘Bad Framing’
Image
There are certain scenes from all the footage that has been released about the Thunderbolts* that have fans wondering why a few particular shots in the trailer look off. While some have chalked this up to bad framing, others believe that Marvel is up to its old tricks, erasing characters that ought to be there so as to not reveal them too early.

Given the lineup of the Thunderbolts* and who the characters will be going up against, it is likely that there could be some heavy hitters lurking behind the CGI shots. Alternatively, there could be some enhanced individuals who could find themselves in league with the likes of Yelena, Bucky, and John Walker.

Vicky Krieps and Emma Mackey in Hot Milk (2025)
Hot Milk (2025) Movie Review: A Tepid Romance Redeemed by a Scalding Mother-Daughter Dynamic
Vicky Krieps and Emma Mackey in Hot Milk (2025)
“Hot Milk” (2025) marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the scribe behind the Keira Knightley-starring biopic “Colette,” the Weinstein-based drama “She Said,” and the sizzling tale of forbidden romance featuring Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz, “Disobedience.” Her first feature presents an uneven outing that falters over the rocks of its central romance but pulls itself together when it turns to the topic of generational trauma.

Emma Mackey stars as Sofia, an anthropology post-grad accompanying her mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw) to Spain, where she is set to receive experimental medical treatment. Since Sofia was four, Rose has been largely unable to walk, save for occasional bursts of ambulation, thanks to a condition that traditional medicine cannot diagnose.

While stuck with her mother amid the sweltering Spanish heat, Sofia does what every young Brit abroad must do and begins a summer fling with Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), who quite literally rides...

Terrence Malick’s ‘To The Wonder’ Receiving Extended Cut Which Could Restore Removed Appearances By Jessica Chastain, Rachel Weisz & More
Image
It’s quite fascinating seeing different edits of acclaimed films, as we’ve seen plenty of filmmakers like Ridley Scott boasting extended versions of their movies. Sometimes studios press directors for shorter versions to make the theatrical experience a bit more pleasant for audiences, as that has long been the thinking of studios/exhibitors. So, when someone talks about a more extended edit of Terrence Malick’s “To The Wonder” being the works, that will get some attention as the director is infamous for hiring high-profile actors only for many of them not to end up in the final edit.

Extended Cut of Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder Confirmed; Longer Song to Song Rumored
Image
Terrence Malick’s status as a moving target––more accurately, a target who rushes towards us while seen through a wide-angled lens––makes it easy to lose track of odds and ends. Thus I sometimes forget our report from August 2023, based on a pair of rather reliable sources, about a longer cut of To the Wonder, à la The Tree of Life or The New World, which would possibly integrate footage from Eugene Edwards’ adjacent docufiction Thy Kingdom Come. (A great film in its own right and essential companion you can rent here.) When we’d first heard of this in 2019 it was deemed a major time-consumer, and with workflow later derailed by Covid it became uncertain when (or if) this project saw the light of day.

But now a major update comes courtesy Keith Fraase, one of that film’s five credited editors, who told podcast Writers on Film,...

Colin Farrell, Jenna Ortega & Johnny Depp Among Betting Odds Frontrunners for Next James Bond Villain
Image
The proliferation of online gambling has led to the wagerification of not just sports, but films, television, and politics. Since the sale of the James Bond franchise to Amazon MGM, gambling sites have put up live odds for actors that are likely to get cast as the villain in the new film. The frontrunners seem to be Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, but Johnny Depp and Jenna Ortega aren’t far behind.

Per Gambling.com, Farrell has become an 11/8 favorite (+138 odds or a perceived 42% probability of landing the role) to become the next antagonist to face off against 007 in Amazon MGM’s first foray into the franchise. The speculation around Farrell comes from his connection to new Bond producer David Heyman, who has previously worked with the actor on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them– where Farell appeared as Percival Graves, who was really the evil magician Grindelwald in disguise.

'Constantine 2': Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
Constantine 2 is finally a reality as Warner Bros. announces a sequel for the DC demonologist. In September 2022, Deadline first reported that Constantine would return with Keanu Reeves reprising his role from the 2005 cult classic. The article also said that Frances Lawrence, who directed the original film, would be back to direct the sequel. Though the Dceu has seen several versions of the character over these past 20 years, none has hit the same spark that Reeves had in that first movie. Now, it seems DC wants to resurrect its universe’s most dangerous demon hunter with the same people that brought him into this world.

Constantine has been a fan favorite of the Dceu since the last time he saved us from the antichrist. The movie created a new kind of world in which angels and demons were living right beside us and going to some crazy clubs. It took...

Lee Cronin's 'The Mummy' Reboot Casts 'Transformers' Actor Jack Reynor
Image
The newest Mummy film has recruited one of the stars from the Transformers franchise as its new lead, but it doesn't sound like he will be the titular Monster. In December 2024, shortly before the release of Nosferatu and Wolf Man, it was announced that Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin was set to make TheMummy reboot for the newly combined Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. However, Cronin's take on the character would not be an official Universal Monster: instead, a version was created for New Line Cinema, the same studio behind Evil Dead Rise.

Deadline now reports that Jack Reynor has been cast in the lead role for The Mummy. The Deadline story states that Reynor is not expected to wear the mummy bandages, implying he will be the human protagonist that the Mummy terrorizes. Lee Cronin’s ‘The Mummy’ Summons Up a ‘Midsommar’ Star to Lead
Image
The Mummyjust got one step closer to becoming a reality. Jack Reynorhas been cast in the upcoming project produced by Atomic Monster, Blumhouse and New Line. It's relevant to point out that Reynor has not been cast as the titular monster, with details surrounding his character being a mystery, for the moment. The studios have been very careful when it comes to crafting this new iteration of the classic big screen creature. Not much is known about the premise of The Mummy, other than the fact that the title will be making its way to cinemas on April 17, 2026.

Before he was cast in The Mummy, Jack Reynor stole the spotlight in The Perfect Couple. The Netflix series allowed the actor to portray Thomas Winbury, a character closely connected to the wedding that took place at the center of the project's premise. The Perfect Couple was originally intended to be a...

Todd Solondz Updates Us on Funding for Elizabeth Olsen Film
Image
You know an actor wants to get a movie made when they use interviews to announce financing opportunities. That's what Elizabeth Olsen did for Todd Solondz's film Love Child a few months ago when she spoke with Vulture. She said at the time, "If anyone’s writing about this interview, if you guys want to make a big, bold notice that says, 'Todd Solondz needs money to make a movie,' that would be great!" Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell were previously attached to Love Child back in 2021, but without financing, they couldn't commit. Currently, Olsen and Charles Melton are attached to star, and hopefully Solondz gets the funding he needs. The great auteur (of Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness fame), who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his film Palindromes, spoke to MovieWeb about Olsen and their potential film.

"One tries to remain and hold onto a level of optimism,...

Audiences were shown the thrill of discovery, the adrenaline rush of danger, and the magic of the unknown.

The heroes were explorers, rebels, and reluctant underdogs thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Whether it’s an archaeologist outpacing the forces of evil, a pirate navigating the high seas, or even two toys meeting, these films deliver the kind of escapism that holds up completely. 12 Best Movies Like Wicked
Image
"Wicked," released with enough green and pink merchandising to choke a horse, has been one of the rare musical extravaganzas to cross over from an audience of theater enthusiasts into the mainstream. Based on the popular Broadway musical starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth (which in turn was based on a Gregory Maguire novel of the same name), "Wicked" tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz." Elphaba ends up becoming roommates with Glinda (Ariana Grande as the future good witch) while they're both studying magic at university. An unlikely friendship blossoms between the two total opposites -- until it's suddenly tested by the lure of the Wizard and his Emerald City.

"Wicked" was a smash hit, earning over $700 million at the box office and 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Grande). It ultimately won...

One of the last movies of the late Gene Hackman has entered the Netflix Top 10 Global Movies chart 22 years after its initial release. Hackman was one of the most revered and successful actors in movie history, and enjoyed a strong filmography, which included a diverse mix of both blockbusters and character-driven dramas. He shot to prominence with early roles in movies like Bonnie and Clyde and I Never Sang For My Father before achieving global recognition and leading man status with the role of Popeye Doyle in William Friedkin's crime thriller The French Connection.

Hackman won an Oscar for his performance and reprised his role in the follow-up The French Connection II. Scarlett Johansson Shuts Down Black Widow Comeback: ‘She Is Dead. Okay?
Image
Scarlett Johansson’s most recent appearance in the MCU was in 2021 Black Widow. Directed by Cate Shortland, the movie stars Scarlett Johansson in the titular role alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz.

The story follows Natasha as she confronts her past and reunites with her estranged “family” to take down the villainous organization known as the Red Room. The movie was notably a prequel, taking into account that the character died during the events of Endgame as she and Hawkeye had to fetch the Soul Stone.

In the meantime, the MCU has introduced an intriguing way for deceased characters to return—the Multiverse. Both Gamora and Loki met their demise in Avengers: Infinity War, yet they managed to return through variant versions of themselves. This has fueled fans’ hopes that Black Widow might receive a similar fate.

We Have a Bigger Problem Than Henry Cavill Losing the James Bond Role Again After Amazon Takes Over the Spy Franchise
Image
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced,” said James Baldwin. And maybe that’s where we find ourselves today, staring down a big, bold, and undoubtedly complicated change in the iconic James Bond franchise. You see, when Amazon swooped in and purchased MGM for a staggering $8.5 billion, it snagged an impressive array of properties.

However, the spy franchise remained the crown jewel of the deal and it wasn’t just Henry Cavill’s Bond dreams that hung in the balance. No, something bigger was at stake—something far more fundamental to the legacy of 007.

Oscar Winner Alejandro Amenábar on Miguel de Cervantes Film and His World War III Fears
Image
Oscar-winning auteur Alejandro Amenábar (The Others, While at War, The Sea Inside) is really worried about World War III.

The Spanish-Chilean filmmaker and composer first made a name for himself with horror thriller Thesis (1996), which won seven Goya Awards in Spain. His psychological thriller Open Your Eyes (1997) was remade by Cameron Crowe as Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise and Penélope Cruz, who also featured in the original. The writer-director’s English-language debut, ghost story The Others (2001), starring Nicole Kidman, became a global hit.

As if that weren’t enough, his 2004 drama The Sea Inside, starring Javier Bardem, won the best international feature, which was then known as the best foreign-language film Oscar.

Currently, the filmmaker is attending the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival where he was celebrated with a tribute during Thursday’s opening ceremony and was invited to share his thoughts and insights during a masterclass on Friday.

HBO's Harry Potter show closes in on new actors to play major characters
Image
The floodgates are opening. The other week, we learned that American actor John Lithgow would play Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV show, the first major casting announcement to come out of this series. Now, Deadline has the scoop on a couple more actors circling major roles. We'd already heard that Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu was close to nabbing the role of Harry Potter's caustic Potions professor Severus Snape; he's now closer than ever, although the deal isn't 100% done just yet. The new face in the crowd is fellow Emmy nominee Janet McTeer, who's up for the role of Transfiguration professor Minerva McGonagall.

McTeer earned her Emmy nomination playing Winston Churchill's wife Clementine in the HBO film Into the Storm, while Essiedu got his starring opposite Michael Coel in the HBO limited series I May Destroy You, playing Kwame. So the both of them are familiar to HBO.

Sentry's Costume in Thunderbolts* Finally Revealed (Though Not By Marvel)
Image
A full look at Sentry's costume in Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* has finally been revealed. However, it wasn't Marvel who was behind the costume reveal, with that honor instead going to the movie's Funko Pop! line of collectibles.

The first look at the Thunderbolts* Funko Pop! figures was shared by Funk Pop News! on X and feature John F. Walker, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, and Sentry, who will be portrayed by Wyatt Russell, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, and Lewis Pullman, respectively, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The Sentry costume shown in the Pop! figure is fairly comics-accurate, although way more stylized, a design decision that some comic book fans have openly spoken out against during suit reveals for past MCU projects.
