Last week, HBO announced that The Last of Us scene-stealer Kaitlyn Dever would be campaigning as a guest star, as opposed to a supporting actress, for the zombie apocalypse drama. That left an opening in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds that has since been filled by ... drumroll, please ... her costar Isabela Merced.
Dever plays Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) in Season 2 for the death of her father in Season 1. Since Dever has only appeared in two episodes (so far), she's eligible to compete as a guest star for The Last of Us because of the TV Academy's "less than 50 percent" ruling. The 28-year-old will also be on the Emmy ballot for Apple Cider Vinegar in Best Limited Series/Movie Actress.

L.A.-based the Mediapro Studio U.S. & Canada has secured film adaptation rights to “The Museum of Cursed Artifacts,” an upcoming novel by Evan Spiliotopoulos, writer of 2017 Disney blockbuster “Beauty and the Beast.”
Described by the Mediapro Studio as action-packed, blending suspense, adventure and supernatural twists, “The Museum of Cursed Artifacts” begins with a famed entrepreneur completing his collection of cursed artifacts. He then takes his life in a shocking manner.
His family, gutted that he blew all his money but still hoping to turn a profit with this macabre museum, assemble leading experts to verify the items’ authenticity. All hell literally breaks loose.
In what the Mediapro Studio calls a “highly competitive deal,” rights to the novel were acquired in a two-book deal with Emily Bestler Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. Spiliotopoulos — whose screenplay credits also include Russell Crowe starrer “The Pope’s Exorcist,” “The Huntsman: Winter’s War...

The Emmy race for Best Drama Actor just received a shot of adrenaline.
For the first time since Gold Derby's 2025 Emmys predictions center opened in February, Noah Wyle is leading the odds in this topsy-turvy category. The Pitt star has overtaken Adam Scott (Severance), who has been in the No. 1 position since early March. Before that, Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) was the frontrunner.
Max's real-time hospital drama has been on a major upswing since its final episodes streamed in April. In one buzzed-about moment, Wyle's character, Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, had a mental breakdown after a concert shooting brought dozens of patients into his emergency room, including his quasi-stepson's new girlfriend. Wyle is a five-time Emmy nominee for ER (1995-99), but this would be his first win.
For Best Drama Series, The Pitt is now tied with The Last of Us in second place, both behind Severance. Taylor Dearden as...

On Dan Erickson's strange corporate dystopia series "Severance," the main characters have all undergone a medical procedure that allows them to "sever" their work lives from their home lives. A chip implanted in their brains suppresses all their memories of the outside world when they step into the office, and then suppresses all memories of the office when they exit back into the world. The four lead characters of "Severance" work for a mysterious company called Lumon Industries, and no one is wholly sure what Lumon does. Outside of Lumon, the four main characters don't know each other. Inside, though, they become friends and co-conspirators.
One of these four core characters is Dylan (Zach Cherry), a foulmouthed and confident team-player who, when we first meet him, is eager to collect gold stars and reward points for strange, minor prizes in the office; sometimes Lumon will throw sterile dance parties for the macrodata refinement team.

Profits nearly doubled and turnover hit record levels at Zorro producer Secuoya Content Group last year, according to the Spanish major’s latest financials.
The outfit said Ebitda rose 85% to €59.1M ($67M) for 2024 fiscal year, while revenues shot up by 33% to a record €142M. Additionally, the group experienced a 51% increase in adjusted Ebitda, 118% growth in Ebit and a 214% rise in consolidated net profit, according to Secuoya.
Secuoya said the “outstanding results are a direct consequence of the strong performance of Secuoya Studios, which has become the main pillar of value creation for the company and a benchmark in the industry for content creation, production, post-production, and distribution.”
Last year, the 2,000-staff company shot five series and four movies totalling 156 hours of content, having doubled down on the studio and launched a production hub in Colombia. We revealed in Feb that Secuoya had struck a first-look development and production deal with...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 of “Severance,” streaming now on Apple TV+.
Ben Stiller has been particularly active on social media lately. For the “Severance” director and executive producer, fan interactions are one of the positive things about being a public figure.
“I find it, actually, really inspiring to be interacting with the audience because we never had that, my generation growing up,” Stiller told Variety at the “Severance” Season 2 FYC event on Saturday in Los Angeles. “When somebody doesn’t like something, I’ll [still] go back and forth with them sometimes and I find that fun, too, because usually once you start talking to somebody or interacting, something positive can come out of it. It’s also kind of fun. And at the end of the day, I don’t really take it that seriously.”

‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Andor’ Redeem Struggling Franchises, While ‘Weapons’ Is the Year’s Best Trailer

The cinematic universes of Marvel and Star Wars have been struggling critically — and even in viewership — for awhile now, but “Thunderbolts*” and Disney+’s “Andor,” respectively, are restoring faith to desperately treaded I.P. On this week’s episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dive into the merits and demerits of each.
Disney’s “Thunderbolts*” co-starring Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan is about to dethrone “Sinners” at IMAX theaters, though Warner Bros. is prepping to re-release the latter hit film in premium venues. And on 70mm. For now, this weekend’s best box-office bet looks to be “Thunderbolts*,” which has garnered better-than-usual reviews for a Marvel movie and promises something different and more character-driven than simply movie chess pieces across a board, as so many MCU movies tend to be doing.
Anne praises the character work and Pugh’s performance especially, while Ryan...

Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.
Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.
Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

Two of the stars of The Last of Us are on the rise this week in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions.
Pedro Pascal, whose beloved character Joel had a brutal run-in with a golf club in the second episode of Season 2, has jumped from fourth place to third place in Best Drama Actor. Meanwhile, series newcomer Isabela Merced, who plays the free-spirited zombie apocalypse survivor Dina, has ascended from ninth place to eighth place in Best Drama Supporting Actress. This would be Pascal's fourth career Emmy bid after receiving three in 2023 for The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia; Merced is seeking her first nomination.
Series lead Bella Ramsey is still in second place in Best Drama Actress, behind only Kathy Bates (Matlock), who has claimed the No. 1 position since we began tracking the 2025 Emmys. Ramsey's defiant character Ellie must now learn how to survive without her father figure in her life.

John Waters was among the handful of celebs at the 50th annual Chaplin Gala in New York Monday night to tribute friend and collaborator Pedro Almodóvar. The Spanish Oscar-winning “Talk to Her” and “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” director received Film at Lincoln Center’s equivalent of a lifetime achievement award with remarks from his beloved screen muse Rossy De Palma, John Turturro, Richard Peña, and Dua Lipa, and even a flamenco dance from Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Waters’ speech, though, was the night’s most memorable and mischievous — no surprise from the “Pink Flamingos” director and Pope of Trash — with Waters praising Almodóvar as “the best filmmaker in the world” while singling out how generous the “Room Next Door” director is with complex roles for women.
Waters recalled “a completely insane club kid party for me when I appeared with my films in Malaga, Spain,” praising Almodóvar as “never pretentious,...

Pedro Almodóvar did not hold back on his opinion of Donald Trump as he accepted the 50th annual Chaplin award from Film at Lincoln Center on Monday evening in Manhattan.

Speaking at Canneseries, Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter — whose credits include hits from “Doctor Who” to “Succession” — recalled how her creative collaboration turned friendship with late “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini changed her career. Tranter met the actor while working on their passion project “The Night Of,” which Gandolfini was supposed to star on before his untimely death in 2013. The series pilot would become the last thing the actor ever filmed, with his role later taken over by John Turturro.

Oh, you know how sequels go: strikes and gutters, ups and downs. The Big Lebowski has been a bonafide classic — and not just of the cult variety — for so long now that it’s become inevitable that sequel talk would come up. So where does it stand? Well, it might come down to — I won’t say “heroes”… — brothers who would be the ones to get it going. But The Dude himself and Maude Lebowski are on board…
Jeff Bridges recently spoke (as part of his “An Evening with The Dude” tour) about how the idea of a sequel to The Big Lebowski gets brought up quite a bit, and although he’s sure it will never happen, Joel and Ethan Coen have surprised him before. “Julianne [Moore] and I would fantasize about that. Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Through the Valley”, the second episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2, now streaming on Max.
Pedro Pascal’s fate in this year’s Emmy Awards race remains uncertain as HBO/Max and his awards team deliberate over which category best suits his performance in Season 2 of “The Last of Us”: lead drama actor or supporting.

Jeff Bridges has had an illustrious career. He's worked with some of Hollywood's greatest directors and has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. However, for many people, he'll always be associated with the 1998 comedy classic, The Big Lebowski, which, if the legendary actor had his way, would be receiving a sequel.
Per Deadline, Bridges attended a screening for The Big Lebowski in Los Angeles and was asked whether he'd be interested in reprising his iconic role of The Dude in a potential sequel. The acclaimed actor would confirm that not only would he be more than willing to return, but that his The Big Lebowski co-star Julianne Moore would as well. "Of course," Bridges said. "Julianne and I would fantasize about that. We did another movie together, Seventh Son, she played a witch in that movie. And we would often say, ‘Gee it’s all set up for a sequel.

Jeff Bridges has shared that he’d be up for making a sequel to The Big Lebowski – which brought him one of the most beloved roles of his career.
Bridges, who played “The Dude” in the 1998 Cohen Brothers thriller, spoke to the audience after a screening of the original film at the Orpheum Theatre in LA.
The Daily Mail newspaper reports that Bridges was asked about the prospect of returning to the role that helped make him a star, and replied that he and original co-star Julianne Moore were of the same mind:
“Of course. Julianne and I would fantasize about that. We did another movie together, Seventh Son, she played a witch in that movie. And we would often say, ‘Gee it’s all set up for a sequel.’”
He added, though, he thought the prospect of the Coens wanting to return to the subject matter was unlikely:

Back when flip phones ruled and crime shows were everywhere, Monk stood out like a sore thumb, one that had to be washed 27 times. Adrian Monk wasn’t your typical detective. He was a genius with germ issues, a human magnifying glass with 312 phobias, and the reason millions of us developed an odd respect for hand wipes. Tony Shalhoub made Monk iconic, but the rest of the gang, Natalie, Stottlemeyer, Randy, and even Sharona, brought their own brand of chaos, charm, and comedy.
For eight glorious seasons, they solved murders, wrestled personal baggage, and somehow made Ocd oddly heartwarming. After the show wrapped in 2009, fans waited years for a comeback. Then boom, 2023’s Mr. Monk’s Last Case dropped like a nostalgic mic, reuniting the core crew. It reminded us just how much we missed this quirky crime-solving family. Now it’s 2025, and we’re snooping around like Monk himself...

Severancefans wondering what it would be like to be a macrodata refiner at the mysterious and important Lumon Industries may have just gotten one step closer. Per CNET,a company is making a replica keyboard just like Mark S., Helly R., Irving B., and Dylan G. used in the macrodata refinement department on Lumon’s severed floor.
Atomic Keyboard has replicated the macrodata department’s blue keyboard with no detail unnoticed. For now, those interested in purchasing the keyboard can sign up for preorder alerts on the Atomic Keyboard website. Although not yet available to purchase, the keyboard was originally set to cost $399, but due to tariffs, the price is not yet confirmed.
Per the description on Atomic Keyboard’s website, the keyboard is one “both your innie and outie will enjoy,” referring to the severed nature of Lumon’s macrodata refiners, who underwent a procedure to separate their work and home lives.

Emmy-winner John Turturro may not be on social media. But he is still grateful for the fan response he’s gotten from his latest role as severed Lumon employee Irving Baliff on Apple TV+’s Severance.
Speaking to People, Turturro talked about staying off social media and how the technology has changed the relationship between actors and fans. “Years ago, people didn’t have social media, so they would say those lines to you on the street, or they’d get tattoos of you,” he said. “A lot of people have tattoos of me on intimate parts of their body, and they sometimes want to show them to me, and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to look at that,’ you know what I mean?”
“I’m not really on social media because I don’t really want to read about myself, and then I don’t want to be self-conscious.

Just days after The Pitt's first season hung up its stethoscope, Noah Wyle's Emmy odds continue to rise.
The Best Actor contender, who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, received rave reviews for the storyline in which he had a mental breakdown after losing yet another patient while working an all-day shift. One month ago, Wyle ranked in fifth place to win Best Drama Actor among the Gold Derby odds, but buoyed by positive word-of-mouth for his performance on The Pitt, he's now in the No. 2 position to claim his first career statuette. He previously received five supporting Emmy bids for ER (1995-99).
The only person standing in Wyle's way, according to the Gold Derby predictions, is Severance star Adam Scott. Lest we forget, Scott also received a goat-load of kudos following the finale of his show, particularly for the scene in which the "innie" and "outie" versions of his character,...

When it was first announced, The Penguin was set to be a one-season spin-off that would further explore the Gotham City established by Matt Reevesin The Batman. At the end of the film, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) has been assassinated, which leaves a massive space open for the city’s other aspiring crime lords to step in. Picking up shortly after the events of the film, The Penguin sees Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) do everything in his power to claim that open seat, and shows him facing off against other rising bosses like Cristin Milioti’s Sofia and Clancy Brown’s Sal — often to explosive outcomes. By the time the miniseries celebrated its finale, the title was a hit with fans and critics alike, holding an 85% approval rating with the former and a 95% approval rating with the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. 2025 may be a quarter way through, but in the world of TV the year is still incredibly young. And so even though we’ve already been down to the severed floor for Severance Season 2, stared at our reflection once again in Charlie Brooker's Netflix series Black Mirror, brought out the billy clubs for Disney+ must-see show Daredevil: Born Again, and had our collective socks knocked off by Philip Barantini's Adolescence, a veritable streaming smorgasbord still lies ahead of us over the next eleven months or so.
From Andor to Zero Day, The Last Of Us to Stranger Things, and Alan Partridge to Wonder Man to Doctor Who, there is no shortage of returning favourites, fresh franchise offerings, original programming, weekly droppers and binge-ready shows in store for us before the year is through. So whether you’re chomping at the bit for Sally Wainwright’s Happy Valley follow-up,...

Arguably the most talked-about moment (that didn't involve a death or tainted coconut milk) from Sunday's The White Lotus finale was when Carrie Coon's Laurie delivered her "I have no belief system" monologue to Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) on their final night in Thailand. The awards buzz immediately started on social media, with fans suggesting it was a "give me that Emmy" type of speech. Take a look:

The work the macrodata refiners do on the severed floor in the Apple TV+ series Severancemay be mysterious and important, but the vehicles the characters drive also fall into that category. In the series, technology plays a huge role, specifically in the development of a procedure called severance that enables a person to split their work lives and home lives by placing a chip into their brain. Characters are also seen using smartphones, but notably, they drive cars that are decades old.
In an interview with BuzzFeed, Severance creator and showrunner Dan Erickson answered the question of why characters like Mark (Adam Scott), Harmony (Patricia Arquette), and Irving (John Turturro) drive such retro cars. For instance, Harmony drives a white Volkswagen Rabbit, which could be a reference to Alice in Wonderland, in addition to being a car from the 1980s. This post contains spoilers for season 1, episode 16 of "Miami Vice."
In 1991's "Barton Fink," the titular playwright (John Turturro) undergoes hellish horrors while experiencing the worst writer's block known to man. Stuck in a hotel room that is anything but a comforting nook for an artist, Barton finds little solace in those around him, and things get progressively worse when someone ends up getting murdered. The film defies genre categorization, playing out like a riveting, unconventional symphony with Barton's escalating anxieties at dead center. Turturro's character is the very picture of complexity, evoking both sympathy and disdain; it's no surprise that this multifaceted performance led to Turturro winning Best Actor at the 44th Cannes Film Festival.
That's just a sliver of Turturro's long and illustrious career, which had bloomed long, long before the actor played the measured, compassionate Irving B. in Apple TV+'s hit show "Severance." His breakthrough film,...

Severancefans were left with a nearly three-year gap between the April 8, 2022, Season 1 finale and the premiere of the Apple TV+ show’s second season this January. With the Season 2 finale having premiered on March 21, and the show officially renewed for a third season, Severance creator and showrunner Dan Erickson hopes it won’t take as long to create the third installment of the dystopian sci-fi thriller.
The critically acclaimed Severance follows the lives of workers at a mysterious company called Lumon, whose “innies” and “outies” have different personalities and identities, keeping their work lives and personal lives separated.
While there is no release date for the third season, given that the show was just renewed, Erickson told Entertainment Weekly he hopes Season 3 comes sooner than the three years it took for the second season. “I would love to finish the show before I’m 70,” Erickson said. For reference, Erickson is 41 years old.

One Severance star has opened up about her thoughts on the critically acclaimed Season 2 finale. Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller threw audiences for a loop when Mark (Adam Scott) ultimately chooses to stay at Lumon with Helly (Britt Lower) instead of leaving with Gemma (Dichen Lachman). This choice was made despite Mark working all season to break Gemma out of Lumon. However, his innie couldn’t contain his love for Helly. During a recent interview with Dazed to speak about the Season 2 finale, Lachman pulled back the curtain on her relationship with Mark, and even though he ultimately decided to stay with Helly, she still believes the two have a familiarity despite the severance barrier keeping them from fully knowing each other:
“I think in all of the iterations of Gemma’s innies, in their subconscious, they know each other. It’s why Mark makes the tree in season one.

There have been countless scandals involving game shows over the years. The most famous adaptation of such an event was Robert Redford’s acclaimed Quiz Show, starring Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro. Still, there have been more recent instances, including a bizarre one in 1984 involving a man who figured out how to beat one of the most popular game shows on American television, Press Your Luck. Due to its very premise, "Severance" tends to focus on the "innie" workers who toil away on the severed floor of Lumon Industries' headquarters in Kier, Pe. These characters lead a mysterious, isolated, and utterly strange existence that forms the backbone of the show's mysteries. However, the very reason they exist is that at some point, a person agreed to undergo Lumon's infamous and controversial severance procedure. This split their personalities into their usual "outie" selves and the innies, the latter of which only exist within the confines of the severed floor -- or, in rare circumstances, when Lumon activates them off-site with a process called the Overtime Contingency Protocol.
As the show slowly reveals, the severance process is drastic, and many of the outies have equally drastic reasons for agreeing to it. Some of them are on a mission, others are looking for better opportunities, while others still are simply trying to escape something.

In the first episode of Dan Erickson's dystopian corporate drama "Severance," a woman named Helly R. (Britt Lower) awakens on a corporate meeting table next to an intercom. She is dressed in office-friendly clothing yet has no memory of how she got there. A voice on the intercom introduces himself as Mark (Adam Scott) and begins speaking to Helly in a disturbingly friendly fashion. It's eventually explained to Helly -- and, by extension, the viewers -- that she has been "severed." She now works for Lumon, a company that's implemented a revolutionary medical technique into their employees' work-life balance. While they are in the office, a chip implanted in their brains will block all memories of the outside world. When they leave the office, the chip switches off, leaving them unable to recall a single thing from their day at Lumon.
This, of course, causes Lumon employees' personalities to bifurcate.

For Terry Knickerbocker, the call came in the dead of night.
It was Sam Rockwell, his longtime friend and client. Knickerbocker, a renowned acting coach based in New York, has worked with Rockwell on every gig since the early 1990s, helping Rockwell find the shades and contours of everyone from Chuck Barris to Bob Fosse.
So close are the two, Rockwell served as best man at Knickerbocker’s wedding and thanked Knickerbocker by name when he accepted his 2018 Oscar for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Rockwell, 56, was calling from South Africa, where for months he had been working on a grueling shoot for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, a sci-fi feature also starring Juno Temple from director Gore Verbinski. The film requires him to recite a 10-page monologue.
“We worked on that monologue for months just to hit all the points,” Knickerbocker, 69, says.
But it was not that movie that he was calling about.

The song from one of the most memorable scenes from the Severance Season 2 finale has been released in its entirety, even for those who don’t have an Apple TV+ subscription. Apple TV+ has dropped The Ballad of Ambrose & Gunnel by Theodore Shapiro, the song played during the Marching Band scene, in the final episodes of Severance Season 2. Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) calls upon Lumon’s Choreography and Merriment department to celebrate Mark Scout (Adam Scott) finishing Cold Harbor, but things don’t go as planned when he gets locked in the bathroom and the entire band turns on him. The Defiant Jazz scene from Severance Season 1 had long been regarded as one of the most iconic moments in the show, but the Marching Band scene takes the cake and is now Milchick’s best moment.

Matt Reeves' The Batman fought colossal headwinds to become an instant classic, which is a major feat considering how crowded the field was. From Adam West to Christian Bale, movie screens have had no shortage of memorable Caped Crusaders. Bringing a new one into the equation felt like overkill, particularly with Ben Affleck's admittedly underrated Dark Knight being part of the Dceu monumental struggles. Another Batman movie on top of that felt like oversaturation, and yet Reeves created a compelling new version of The Dark Knight that felt as fresh as a daisy and as timeless as the classic comics stories that inspired it.
A great deal of that is owed to the totality of Reeves' world, and how every little detail fits his distinctive version of Gotham City. That pays huge dividends with his villain, The Riddler, who requires delicacy to render properly, but who soars under Paul Dano's terrific performance.
