Happy Gilmore 2 will be tinged with sadness after latest news
Image
Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 is going to be a hoot. Even the trailer brings some laughs, and we can assume, based on the previous Happy Gilmore, that the flick will be worth watching. It might not be Oscar material, but that isn't the point. The point is to have a fun time.

The sequel will, of course, star Sandler as Happy but also feature Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, and, of course, Christopher McDonald. There will also be a number of cameos from well-known celebrities and athletes.

One part of the original film that will not be part of the second is an alligator named Morris. Unfortunately, he passed away recently from old age at his gator farm home in Colorado. Based on his teeth and growth rate, he was presumed to be around 80 years old. But he wasn't just a one-film star.

Morris the...

You Don’t Want to Miss Baltimore Ravens’ ‘Severance’ Tribute as They Reveal 2025-26 Schedule
Image
The NFL schedule reveal has quietly transformed from a casual date drop to a full-out entertainment event. In recent years, teams have gone all-in on turning their schedule announcements into small, high-quality productions of parody trailers and popular pop-culture references woven into the team’s announcements, to show who they will be going against in this season. And does all of this have any impact? Well, looks like the fans seem to eat it up.

The full 2025 schedule dropped at 8 p.m. Et on Wednesday, May 14, and social media started doing what it does best—turning heads. Each team’s reveal looks better than the last one, each team trying to out-viral each other, and it looks like this year they have really upped the production value a notch.

While many teams had notable revelations, it’s the Baltimore Ravens that turned heads with their creative way of revealing the 2025-26 schedule.

Adam Sandler Mourns Death Of ‘Happy Gilmore’ Alligator Co-Star
Image
As the stars of Happy Gilmore reunite for a long overdue sequel, Adam Sandler is paying tribute to one original cast member.

The 2x Golden Globe nominee mourned the death of his alligator co-star Morris, who played the titular character’s nemesis in the 1996 golf comedy, on Wednesday with a sweet tribute to the reptilian actor on Instagram.

“Goodbye, Morris. We are all gonna miss you,” he captioned the post. “You could be hard on directors, make-up artists, costumers – really anyone with arms or legs – but I know you did it for the ultimate good of the film. The day you wouldn’t come out of your trailer unless we sent in 40 heads of lettuce taught me a powerful lesson: never compromise your art. I will never forget at craft service that time when we split the Three Musketeers bar and you let me have the bigger half. But that’s who you were.

The Baltimore Ravens Spoofed ‘Severance’ for Their Schedule Reveal. They Just Forgot to Make It Funny
Image
I’ve been writing a lot lately about my lengthy Zoom with The Naked Gun! and Airplane! creator David Zucker. Our interview was ostensibly set up to discuss his upcoming web series MasterCrash, a more-sincere-than-usual sendup of MasterClass, and to provide space for him to gripe about being left out of Seth MacFarlane and Akiva Schaffer’s new Naked Gun movie — a classic win-win media & PR collab! The residual impact has been how much I’ve since thought about parody, and how not everybody knows how to do it right.

Time will tell if MacFarlane and Schaffer’s take starring Liam Neeson as the new Lt. Frank Drebin, son of the old one (Leslie Nielsen), strikes the right tone. Considering the IP and talent attached — and even factoring in the talent not attached — Naked Gun (August 1, 2025) has a shot. The big Baltimore Ravens short film released this week, on the other hand,...

Tom Cruise | The tiniest of hints that the Les Grossman film is still active
Image
Tom Cruise isn’t ruling out a Les Grossman movie, now that his Mission: Impossible work is pretty much complete. More here.

Straight up front: that’s not a clickbait headline. It is a story about the tiniest of hints. Nothing more, nothing less.

Back in 2008, Tom Cruise did something it’s hard for one of the most famous actors in the world to do: he appeared by surprise in a movie. It was in the film Tropic Thunder, directed by Ben Stiller, with Cruise appearing under prosthetics as studio executive Les Grossman.

The character is one that Cruise has talked about with fondness, and at various times in the 17 years since, there’s been chat about a spin-off movie for him.

Lest we forget too, he danced for the film’s ending as well. Here’s a refresher, with some fruity language involved…

Separately, it’s unlike to have...

12 Best Travel Movies Ever, Ranked
Image
More than 1.4 billion people are estimated to have traveled in 2024, while the number of tourists was expected to grow to more than five billion in 2025 for the first time ever. We're no sociologists, so we won't pretend to know exactly why travelers feel the need to escape from their everyday lives in search of ... what exactly? What beckons billions of people the world over to traverse the roads, seas, and skies to arrive at a new destination beyond their familiar surroundings? Many things: pleasure, entertainment, adventure, peer pressure, Fomo, Yolo, Ig-worthy backdrops for their social media (#takemeback), and self-discovery.

Cinema has sought to capture this essential drive for a century. We're celebrating the best by highlighting travel movies, which we define as "movies where characters go from A to B for personal reasons." So we won't be looking at movies about traveling for work ("Midnight Run") or set in a...

Fifth Season’s New Global TV Sales Boss On How ‘Severance’ Could Become “The Foundation Of The Library” In The Future
Image
Exclusive: Severance, Apple TV+’s most-watched series launch of all time, could become “the foundation” of Fifth Season’s library in the future, according to the studio’s new global TV sales boss.

Despite the show currently being available on Apple globally and with at least one more season to come, Jennifer Ebell said there is plenty opportunity to monetize Severance both now and further down the line, while the smash sci-fi thriller is a perpetual reputation builder for Fifth Season.

“Being the number one show on Apple is such a loud calling card,” Ebell told Deadline in her first interview since replacing Prentiss Fraser and as she prepped for today’s L.A. Screenings. “Having great shows like Severance is the foundation of the library in the future. It speaks to the testament of what we are trying to do and what we continue to do.”

Severance Season 2 took the TV world by storm.

Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore (1996)
How Christopher McDonald Became ‘Happy Gilmore’s’ Straight Shooter
Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore (1996)
Happy Gilmore 2. (L to R) Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin and Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore in Happy Gilmore 2. Cr. Scott Yamano/Netflix © 2024. Nearly three decades after the original film came out, Happy Gilmore 2 will be released this summer as a streaming film on Netflix. Many of the original cast members are returning, including Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Dennis Dugan, and Christopher McDonald. In the first film, McDonald’s Shooter McGavin character was the perfect foil for Sandler’s Happy Gilmore, and one would think we’ll see that dynamic continue in the new film. When McDonald recently appeared at Steel City Con, he told the story about how he was specifically recruited for the role. The One Dramatic Role That Helped Adam Scott Land Severance
Image
If you're a longtime fan of Adam Scott, you probably know him best for his comedic roles. Think of his douchey "Step Brothers" character Derek, or his hilariously awful Bad Place demon from "The Good Place," or his exasperated struggling actor Henry Pollard on "Party Down" -- or, most famously, his lovable but goofy Ben Wyatt on NBC's beloved sitcom "Parks and Recreation." So how did this funny guy end up starring in one of TV's biggest dramas? Specifically, "Severance," the massively successful and critically adored Apple TV+ drama spearheaded by Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller.

I should get one thing out of the way here, which is that "Severance" is, at times, very funny. Even in its season 2 finale "Cold Harbor," Scott's character Mark S. gets some genuinely hilarious moments, including one where he's confusedly waving a gun at a freaked-out Sandra Bernhard. Still, the show is much...

Severance's Biggest Mysteries Are Solvable, According To The Show's Creator
Image
After two hit seasons, a lot of the mysteries of Dan Erickson's bizarre anti-corporate sci-fi series "Severance" remain unsolved. Central among them: What exactly does Lumon do? Lumon, as fans of the show can tell you, is a threatening corporate entity that has developed a system of severing its employees from their outside lives while they're in the office. Lumon employees volunteer to have a computer chip implanted in their brains that erase all their memories of the outside world when they step into the office. While at work, they only have memories of their job. When they go home, the chip restores their outside memories, but masks everything they encountered at work. The "Innies" and the "Outies" have no personal memories they share.

The premise seems like a drama about work/life balance, but Lumon is clearly up to something far more insidious. The main characters, led by...

'The Best Dad': Jerry Stiller Remembered 5 Years After His Death by Son Ben Stiller
Image
Acclaimed actor Ben Stiller fondly remembers his late, great father, Jerry Stiller, on social media.

Ben Still shared a classic image of his father from all the way back in the elder Stiller's first heyday in 1974. The image, shared in a May 11 X post, was accompanied by the caption, "5 years today. Will always miss this man who was so incredibly generous, loving and funny. And the best dad."

Jerry Stiller's career in entertainment began in the early 1950s, during which time he appeared in numerous productions of Shakespearian classics. It was also around this time when Jerry met his future wife and fellow comedian, Anne Meara. Together, Stiller and Meara found success as a comedy duo, making...

Why Adam Scott Found The Severance Season 2 Finale Heartbreaking
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Severance" season 2.

At the beginning of season 2 of Dan Erickson's semi-surreal anti-corporate sci-fi drama "Severance," Mark S. (Adam Scott) discovers that Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman), one of his co-workers at Lumon, is actually Gemma, Outie Mark's presumed-dead wife. Mark, recall, has had his mind "severed" by Lumon, which means he only has memories of his 9-to-5 job when he's at work. Outside of work, Mark has no memories of what happened while he was on the clock. The procedure allowed Lumon to hire both Mark and Gemma before putting them in a room together, assuring they wouldn't recognize each other. There is a further scandal, of course, in that Lumon seemingly faked Gemma's death for its own insidious purposes.

Over the course of the show's second season, Outie Mark not only learns that Gemma is alive but also aims to locate her and free her from Lumon's clutches.

Ben Stiller's $128M Dark Comedy Lands On Netflix's Global Charts 18 Years Later
Image
Ben Stiller's dark comedy, which made over $128 million at the box office, has landed on Netflix's global chart 18 years after its release. Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence since the 1990s, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. He went on to make guest appearances in television shows like Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and Extras, the last of which earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, including romantic comedies like There's Something About Mary and Along Came Polly, and more absurdist and satirical style comedies such as Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tropic Thunder. Since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. However, many of Stiller's...

How ‘Severance’ Composer Theodore Shapiro Evolved “Using Piano As The Source” In Season 2, And What He Plans For Season 3 – Sound & Screen TV
Image
Severance composer Theodore “Teddy” Shapiro said during a sit-down conversation at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television awards-season event how the music evolved from the first to the second season of the Apple TV+ series.

“I said my first thought was that we could do something that contrasted one world for the innies and one world for the outies,” Shapiro said about the vision he had for the score working alongside producer Ben Stiller. “So I sent Ben a bunch of ideas and he was really enthusiastic about sort of what I was coming up with.”

While getting ready to shoot Season 1, Shapiro noticed Stiller kept “coming back to this section of peace,” which was “based on four chords.” With Stiller’s “incredible instincts,” Shapiro then “sat down at the piano and played those four chords,” which turned into the main title.

Shapiro noted that the music was influenced by 1970s cinema,...

Image
Okay, so the broomsticks, margarita glasses, and sisterly screaming from Practical Magic are happening again. Yep, Practical Magic 2 is officially on its way, and we’re all set to rewind the golden age of VHS. Seriously, it’s been over 25 years since Sally and Gillian Owens first cast their chaotic charm on us. Now they’re back, still witchy, fabulous, and hopefully still making midnight drinks while breaking generational curses.

With Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman returning, we’re about to dive into the magic mix of potions, drama, and probably dancing in the moonlight. But while we wait for this magic to happen on September 18, 2026, let’s rewind the ‘90s mood of cult classics. Yep, we’re talking about those slightly weird, wildly lovable movies that stuck us like glitter on a velvet dress.

So, before the iconic Owen sisters return, let’s revisit the vibes that actually...

It’s that time of year again, where people want some statues.

The final Emmy submissions are due Thursday, May 8, at 10 p.m. Pt, and if you listen closely, you can almost hear the collective scrambling across Hollywood. For those of us who live and breathe awards season strategy, this is when things get interesting. On the surface, it’s just paperwork. But in reality? Below, I’ve broken down the most urgent and talked-about questions insiders are still debating, with implications that could echo all the way to nomination morning in July.

Here are the biggest questions still hanging in the balance:

Ben Stiller loves having 'really inspiring' chats with devoted Severance fans online
Image
Ben Stiller frequently engaged with Severance fans during the airing of the hit Apple TV+ show. The actor/director says that he found the interactions with the show’s fans “inspiring,” because he didn’t have the chance to do that growing up. Stiller has directed 11 episodes of the series and acts as the show's executive producer.

Season 2 of Severance earned a huge fan following, with people soon taking to social media to comment on theories, romantically pair together their favorite characters, and predict what they thought would happen in the season finale. Stiller was often seen liking and interacting with these fan posts, which were sometimes as fun to follow as watching the show itself.

During a Sxw panel the filmmaker said the huge critical and fandom reception is a testament to the show because audiences had so many options to choose from. “In this day and age, it...

To celebrate the release of 'Thunderbolts*' here are the best anti-hero action movies to stream right now
Image
Not every hero wears a cape — some curse, cheat, and still save the day.

I’ve always been more of an anti-hero guy than a full-blown superhero fan. Don’t get me wrong, I respect the capes — but there’s just something way more interesting about characters who break the rules, bend the line between right and wrong, and still manage to save the day (sort of). That’s why I’m genuinely excited for “Thunderbolts*.” It looks like Marvel is finally embracing the messier side of heroism. So if you’re like me and prefer your heroes a little rough around the edges, here are my top seven anti-hero action movies you can stream right now, ranked.

Helena or Helly?: Severance Season 2 Finale Fan Theory Gets Response From Creator
Image
Severance Season 2 caused an explosion of fan theories. Everyone was trying to think fast and prove they'd outsmarted the writers. And one popular fan theory did in fact come true: the Helly (Britt Lower) that came in through the door in episode one was not Helly at all. It was her outie, Helena.

This wasn't revealed until episode four of the show, and even the cast members were shocked when they first read the scripts. Tramell Tillman, who plays Mr. Milchick, revealed to Variety exactly what he thought upon learning the twist. “I could not wait for people to experience that because when I was at home and I read the script for the first time, I nearly tossed my laptop down,” he said. “I felt betrayed. I felt lied to! I said, ‘The whole time?’ So it was really rewarding when that episode aired and I got to see...

Ben Stiller on ‘Inspiring’ Interactions With ‘Severance’ Fans on Social Media: ‘We Never Had That, My Generation Growing Up’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 2 of “Severance,” streaming now on Apple TV+.

Ben Stiller has been particularly active on social media lately. For the “Severance” director and executive producer, fan interactions are one of the positive things about being a public figure.

“I find it, actually, really inspiring to be interacting with the audience because we never had that, my generation growing up,” Stiller told Variety at the “Severance” Season 2 FYC event on Saturday in Los Angeles. “When somebody doesn’t like something, I’ll [still] go back and forth with them sometimes and I find that fun, too, because usually once you start talking to somebody or interacting, something positive can come out of it. It’s also kind of fun. And at the end of the day, I don’t really take it that seriously.”

Stiller’s social media interactions have come at a time when...

Apple TV+’s Severance has emerged as one of the most successful streaming platform projects. It has captivated audiences with its thrilling storyline and mind-bending narrative. But a huge chunk of the show’s immense success can be attributed to its spectacular cast.

Casting decisions profoundly influence a show’s trajectory and performance. In a show like Severance, the actors need to deliver with conviction. Hence, when it came down to picking the show’s main man, Mark Scout, the show’s executive producer and director, Ben Stiller, knew exactly who he wanted for the role.

Adam Scott, primarily known for his comedic chops, now helms the sci-fi thriller and wonderfully so. It was quite an unconventional choice on Stiller’s part, but it certainly proved to be a great one. In one particular instance, the show director revealed the reasons behind his pivotal choice for the protagonist of Severance.

I Canceled My Netflix Account for Apple TV+ in May Because Nobody Is Beating These 4 Shows
Image
Apple TV+ originals are slowly making their way into the minds of viewers thanks to shows like Ted Lasso, Severance, Silo, Pachinko, and more. The streaming platform has been competing with streaming giants like Netflix, but over the past couple of years, it has been seen that viewers have been shifting to Apple TV+ because of the original, authentic content.

Sure, Apple TV+ shows are exclusive to Apple users, but now they’re available for viewers who have smart TVs, consoles, and are online. Some viewers who have been watching the shows for a while now stated that the streaming platform should be given a chance because the shows on it know how to make the audience feel. It’s just quality over quantity for them, and I have no regrets in saying that I have canceled my Netflix subscription for Apple TV+, especially when it comes to these four shows.

Ben Stiller Directed This Awesome Sci-Fi Pilot Starring Jack Black And Owen Wilson
Image
The pilot for "Community" creator Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab's TV series "Heat Vision and Jack" was ordered by Fox back in 1999, but the network was a little put off by the show and never picked it up for a series. The pilot did end up airing on Fox as a 30-minute TV special, although it gained more notoriety among VHS traders and cult TV lovers. "Heat Vision and Jack," as directed by Ben Stiller, was to be a "Renegade"-style series about Jack Austin (Jack Black), an itinerant loner-on-the-road who helps random people in trouble. His only possession is his reliable motorcycle, and he is on the run from the law.

The twist is that Jack's motorcycle could talk to him, as it contained the spirit of his best friend Doug (Owen Wilson). Doug had been recently shot by an experimental ray gun, shunting his consciousness into the motorcycle.

Adam Scott reveals the ‘Severance’ Season 2 scene that left him ‘freaked out’
Image
The stars of the hit sci-fi thriller Severance reconvened Saturday night for a hilarious grilling by Conan O’Brien.

The Q&a, at Apple TV+’s FYC space at the Hollywood Athletic Club, started with a few mishaps, including a missing chair for O’Brien and a shortage of microphones, which left Ben Stiller, the show's executive producer and primary director, without an amplification device. “Really? You guys have to share a mic?” O’Brien asked with a trademark incredulity when Severance costar Tramell Tillman passed his microphone to Stiller. “It’s Apple! They make a billion dollars a second, and they had to find me a chair at the last minute, and you two are sharing a mic.” Over loud laughter from the crowd, Stiller joked, “They spent all the money on the rooms upstairs.” O’Brien nodded before quipping, “It’s the tariffs.”

O’Brien explained that, as an old friend of Stiller’s,...

Why Jill Sobule “I Kissed a Girl” Remains a Model for Queer Representation
Image
LGBTQ audiences who wanted visibility in pop culture had it tough for most of 1995, when Morrissey’s “Boy Racer” was about as explicit as things got (“He’s just too good-looking…”). Two years before Ellen DeGeneres came out to a network TV audience of millions, several fresh shoots appeared in an otherwise largely barren field. The political ABC sitcom Spin City boasted a gay Black character, the third- or fourth-funniest cast member. A closeted lesbian chief of staff kept an eye on the hospital in NBC’s megahit E.R.

Natasha Lyonne Talks ‘Uncanny Valley’ Directorial Debut, Use Of “Copyright-Clean” AI & Danger Of Agi
Image
Exclusive: Part of Hollywood’s cohort of ethical AI advocates, Natasha Lyonne is walking the talk with her upcoming feature directorial debut.

Ahead of the Season 2 premiere of Poker Face, returning May 8 with three episodes on Peacock, the 2x Golden Globe nominee told Deadline how she plans to utilize artificial intelligence in Uncanny Valley, in contrast from the “dirty model” on which the tech is often built.

“I just heard we have this first clean foundational model that is copyright-clean that you can build on, but ultimately that is a tool,” explained Lyonne. “That’s not going to omit any department heads or production designers or cinematographers. This movie I’m doing with Brit Marling is actually a real film.”

Comparing the film’s use of AI to “a green screen or something like that,” Lyonne says the tool will allow her “to do a film at a greater scale,...

Another SNL great joins Everybody's Live with John Mulaney tonight, April 30
Image
Netflix streams another brand-new episode of Everybody's Live with John Mulaney tonight, April 30. And once again, John Mulaney is calling in a Saturday Night Live great for some help.

So far, Everybody's Live has welcomed Saturday Night Live alumni Fred Armisen, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Vanessa Bayer, Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Bill Hader, Tina Fey, and Conan O'Brien.

Tonight's all-new episode will feature Molly Shannon. The SNL alum appeared on the show from 1995 to 2001, becoming one of the best all-around performers of her era. Few Saturday Night Live cast members can match Shannon when it comes to physical comedy.

Shannon and Mulaney's paths never crossed during his tenure at Saturday Night Live. The writer arrived a year after Shannon hosted for the first time in 2007 and was long gone by the time Shannon hosted again in 2023.

However, Shannon did have a role to play in Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special.

This Is Why Ben Stiller’s ‘Happy Gilmore’ Character Never Got What Was Coming to Him
Image
One of the oddest things about the original Happy Gilmore is the fact that Ben Stiller’s villainous nursing home attendant, Hal L., faces zero repercussions for his crimes. We all cheered when a smarmy pro golfer was chased down and pulverized by a small army of violent fans, yet the guy who ran a literal sweatshop full of seniors was just allowed to continue his campaign of elder abuse?

As many fans are aware, the movie very nearly included a moment in which Happy informs Hal that his grandmother blew the whistle on his scam. In the deleted scene, Hal then tries to claim that Grandma Gilmore can’t be believed because she’s “in the advanced stages of senility.” Happy responds by throwing Hal L. out the window.

Why would the movie exclude such an important scene, which resolves a key plot point? Well, apparently the blame should be placed squarely on us,...

Natasha Lyonne’s Feature Directorial Debut Will Be a ‘Hybrid’ AI Movie
Image
Natasha Lyonne is set to make her feature directorial debut — with a big assist from artificial intelligence.

The “Poker Face” star is teaming up with Brit Marling and renowned computer scientist Jaron Lanier to create “Uncanny Valley,” a “hybrid film” that combines live action and AI. The new flick was announced on Tuesday by Asteria Studios, the self-described “ethical AI film and animation studio” that Lyonne co-founded alongside Bryn Mooser.

“Uncanny Valley,” per a release from Asteria, will be “powered by ‘Marey,’ the first clean foundational AI model developed by the engineers at Moonvalley, ensuring creative integrity and copyright transparency.”

Lyonne, in a statement shared with TheWrap, said it is “astounding” what can be created with AI when it is used “ethically and creatively.”

“Bringing something so bold to life feels radically expansive and exciting,” she said. “I’m immensely grateful for this opportunity from Asteria and to witness this...

The Underrated Comedy That Jack Black Is (Surprisingly) Most Proud Of
Image
Jack Black and Kyle Gass first met in the mid-1980s, when the two young men were performing with the Actors' Gang, a performance troupe from Culver City, California. They bonded over their mutual taste in music, and the pair would end up spending a lot of time together at Gass' apartment, where Gass would teach Black how to play the guitar. By 1994, they had written one (1) song together, and performed live for the first time. As the lore goes, they hadn't settled on a band name yet, and put out a few choices to the audience. Their choices were the simple Pets or Meat, the silly Balboa's Biblical Theater, or Gass' favorite, The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief. Eventually, though, the pair sort of insisted the audience choose Tenacious D, a term they got from a local basketball announcer (as in: tenacious defense).

Few remember the "Tenacious D" TV specials,...

10 Actors Who Only Accepted A Role For The Money
Image
Look, actors have to eat too, and all the arthouse and award season favorite projects they do aren't always going to pay the bills. To put it simply, just as we all do jobs that we don't necessarily feel personally invested in, actors can also take on work primarily for the associated salary. This distinction doesn't take away from the work itself, and certainly doesn't diminish our own feelings for it, but it serves as an amusing reminder of the value of the dollar. If anything, it helps humanize the actors involved with the knowledge that they too have to make their own ends meet.

Whether it's celebrated, award-winning actors or beloved character actors looking for the next project, regardless of the material, all actors play a role only for the money in their career. Many of these actors have been forthcoming about their primary motivation for joining a project,...

One More Day, One More Box Office Record Broken by Sinners: How Does Ryan Coogler Do It?
Image
While Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos is swinging out of the gates with claims of theatres becoming outdated, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is eyeing to break industry records. For a movie that was reportedly scrutinized behind the scenes ahead of its release, Sinners is proving to be another commercial and critical success in Coogler’s filmography.

Even though some attempted to paint Sinners‘ impressive first week numbers in a grey light, leading to industry veterans, including Ben Stiller, coming to the movie’s defense, the projections for its second week are enough to put any remaining doubts to rest.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners eyes for another record with second-week projections Sinners | Credit: WB

Given how arduous it has become to get original ideas running in the current mainstream climate, which often tend to bank on already-established IPs and remakes as of late, Sinners has elevated the hopes for original ideas moving forward.

Why Ryan Coogler Deserved That Rich ‘Sinners’ Deal
Image
On this week’s Screen Talk, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dig into Ryan Coogler’s $90-million period vampire musical “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan as twins Smoke and Stack, as well as the boffo box office and the controversial deal.

Warners opened the movie to a bigger-than-expected $48 million Easter weekend, and a weak $15 million overseas. The only other horror film to ever earn an A CinemaScore was James Cameron’s sequel “Aliens” in 1986. It’s rare and bodes well for a broader audience. Nearly half of the opening-day audience was Black, which increased to 38 percent by the weekend’s end.

Warners has bragging rights over this one and, with “A Minecraft Movie,” enjoyed two movies grossing over $40 million. It spells some relief for embattled studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. The movie is original and unusual, and thoughtful and entertaining enough to warrant success. It’s...

Sinners: Al Capone Prequel Next? Coogler & Jordan Weigh In As LeBron & Celebs Rave
Image
As Ryan Coogler’s Sinners storms the box office—shattering expectations and resonating deeply with audiences—the buzz around its franchise potential is reaching a fever pitch.

In a recent interview, Coogler and Michael B. Jordan were asked about the possibility of expanding the Sinners universe with a prequel.

Fans are especially intrigued by the idea of diving into the gritty, untold origins of Smoke and Stack, tracing their rise through Chicago’s criminal underworld under the watchful tutelage of the legendary Al Capone.

Jordan expressed a clear openness to the idea, stating, "I'm always up for it. Not saying he wouldn't (pointing to Coogler) but I'm just saying, I would be up for it." When pressed for further comment, Jordan deferred to the director, adding, "He calls the shots," with a nod towards Coogler.

Coogler’s response was thoughtful and lighthearted, as he playfully deflected the “shot-caller” title by calling out to his wife,...
