On the DVD special features for Lawrence Kasdan's 2003 psychic sci-fi hodgepodge "Dreamcatcher," author Stephen King talks a little bit about how he came to write the 2001 novel on which it was based. He said that he had recently been severely injured in a car accident, and later admitted that he was under the influence of Oxycontin while writing the novel. King also noted that "Dreamcatcher" was supposed to be -- at least in part -- about exploring taboos. King felt that all sexual taboos had been covered by literature, stating that the bedroom door had already been opened. The bathroom door, though, he felt was still closed. The bathroom is where one explored their most personal and disgusting habits, King said, and it was high time he explored that.
As such, there's a scene in "Dreamcatcher" (both the novel and the movie) wherein a character named Beav (Jason Lee) is sitting on a toilet,...

[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in June 2017. It has since been updated with new entries.]
Ron Perlman would have us believe that war never changes, but the movies about it certainly have. The last 20 years have brought no shortage of films about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (for obvious reasons), but the best war movies of the 21st century show that World War II continues to fascinate filmmakers most of all.
While those conflicts have dominated the genre lately, everything from the Civil War to the Battle of Red Cliffs has found powerful expression onscreen. Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” tells us that “war is a drug,” and the films below suggest that movies about war are just as addictive — maybe even more so. We hope this list provides your fix.
With contributions from Anne Thompson and Michael Nordine.

Directed and written by Michael Mann, the 1995 crime drama movie Heat starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jon Voight, Val Kilmer, and Tom Sizemore. The story follows the conflict between an LAPD detective and a career thief. The impact of their conflict on their professional and personal lives was also depicted in the movie. Mann wrote the script of Heat, basing it on a Chicago police officer, Chuck Adamson’s pursuit of criminal Neil McCauley.

Heat director Michael Mann has remembered Val Kilmer today following the actor’s death aged 65.
Mann said today: “While working with Val on Heat I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character. After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news.”
Kilmer starred with Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore and Ashley Judd in hit 1995 film Heat, about a group of high-end professional thieves who start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a clue at their latest heist.
Kilmer‘s death was confirmed by his family to the New York Times after battling pneumonia and cancer.
The respected actor was also remembered this morning by fellow thespian Josh Brolin who posted a picture of himself with Kilmer on Instagram, noting: “See ya, pal.

Michael Mann has long been a filmmaker with an eye for detail. From his early work on Miami Vice to his later films like Collateral and The Insider, Mann explored the impact of work on one's identity through action. Nowhere is this more evident than in Heat, a film that was a turning point not only in Mann’s career but in the crime genre as a whole.
However, what some fans don’t realize is that its roots actually trace back to a lesser-known project – Mann’s 1989 TV film LA Takedown. While the TV movie shares the same cat-and-mouse relationship between a cop and a thief, it was limited by the constraints of TV production, resulting in a more stripped-down and less polished version of the story. What LA Takedown lacked in resources, Heat more than made up for in scale, depth, and precision.

The Oscars In Memoriam tribute, set to Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” began with a tribute from Morgan Freeman to his “Unforgiven” and “Under Suspicion” co-star Gene Hackman. Hackman, who was 95, was found dead last week in his Santa Fe home along with his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on ‘Unforgiven’ and ‘Under Suspicion.’ I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work,” said Freeman. “He received two Oscars. He won the hearts of film lovers all over the world. Gene always said, ‘I don’t think about legacy, I just think people remember me as someone who tried to do good work.'”

When it comes to champions of forgotten sex symbols, you can’t do much better than Quentin Tarantino.
Snubs from the annual Oscars in memoriam segment are always uncomfortable, but 2023 was an especially awkward year for the Academy. Leslie Jordan, Anne Heche, Tom Sizemore, Paul Sorvino, and more celebrities who had recently passed were excluded from the ceremony. For the late Stella Stevens — a blonde bombshell known for decades of TV and film, and who at 83 had died just one month earlier from advanced Alzheimer’s disease — facing disrespect from the industry was always routine.
“I wrote letters to the Motion Picture Academy,” said filmmaker Andrew Stevens, Stella’s only son. With hundreds of credits to his name, the director, producer, and actor makes himself as busy as his late mother but is best known for appearing in 1978’s “The Boys in Company C.” Speaking with IndieWire earlier this January,...

Originally conceived as a sci-fi thriller with philosophical undertones, Species emerged as one of 1995’s weirdest monster movies.
The early 90s digital effects revolution birthed many monsters. Sam Neill and Laura Dern were menaced by velociraptors in the ground-breaking Jurassic Park in 1993. Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller were chased around a museum by a rhino-like behemoth in The Relic (1996). Samuel L Jackson was rudely interrupted mid-monologue by an intellectual shark in Deep Blue Sea (1999).
Few monster movies were as eclectically cast or as zany as 1995’s Species. Somehow, director Roger Donaldson managed to convince such acting greats as Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker and Alfred Molina to appear as members of a specialist team on the trail of a randy human-alien hybrid monster (Natasha Henstridge) seducing assorted men in Los Angeles.

Making a great war movie is no easy task, with many notable genre offerings receiving criticism for a number of different reasons. Besides bad reviews, there's a myriad of factors as to why a war movie might not be successful, it happens to feature major historical accuracies or simply plays out in a manner that comes across more like military propaganda than an actual movie. In any case, the genre's laundry list of offerings means that war movies that do not debut to both critical and commercial acclaim are far more likely to fade into cinematic obscurity.
With that being said, many outings of this ilk still happen to boast great battle scenes in what is otherwise a forgettable movie. Capturing an electrifying snapshot of the adrenaline-soaked aura associated with armed combat, these memorable sequences range in scope and location from intimate shootouts to full-on military offensives. From classic war movies to more modern contemporaries,...

Few films genres are as iconic as Noir. Recognizable for dramatic lighting, jazzy soundtracks, and a gritty setting, Noir has been transporting viewers to the world of underground crime since its creation in the 1940s. More important than its aesthetic, Noir's morally ambiguous leads embark on investigations of the human spirit and its ability to be corrupted.
Though the era of 1940s Noir has ended, the genre has lived on in modern cinema--influencing many films with its classic themes and visuals. For example, David Lynch's psychological thriller Mulholland Drive, relies on a dreamy jazz soundtrack and classic Noir visuals, while dark comedies like A Simple Favor, revolve around a morally ambiguous lead on a quest to undercover the truth. Ultimately, by incorporating elements of Noir into their projects, these successful films better draw audiences into the story.

If the recent trailer success of 28 Years Later has shown us anything, it's that sometimes you can't find some of your favorite movies on streaming. After the trailer broke records, many people started seeking out 2002's 28 Days Later on any streaming platform, only to find it wasn't on one. Social media lit up when fans realized the film wasn't streaming anywhere and the matter was eventually rectified. Perhaps with Ralph Fiennes getting major Oscar buzz for Conclave, fans can start making noise about bringing his 1995 sci-fi thriller Strange Days to streaming because it's also missing. Plus, given the fact that it's New Year's Eve today, it would've made for the perfect viewing as we head into 2025.

One of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro's most iconic movies is getting a new streaming home soon. Pacino rose to fame portraying the youngest son of the Corleone family in The Godfather trilogy. His follow-up performances in Scarface and Dog Day Afternoon further cemented his status as a formidable actor. De Niro’s career formed along similar genre lines with gritty roles in mob films like Goodfellas, while winning Best Actor for his gripping portrayal of Jake Lamotta in Raging Bull. The two have thus defined the crime genre with unparalleled talent and their brooding on-screen presence in action-packed dramas.
Though the two legends have often worked separately, their collaborations have nonetheless brought about some significant films. Their time in The Godfather Part II, where De Niro plays a young Vito and father to Pacino's Michael, solidified both actors' reputations as masters of the crime and gangster genres,...

There's something about knowing a film is based on a true story or real history that makes it so much more engaging. Everything from WWII to the Battle of Thermopylae, and even the life story of Robbie Williams as a monkey have been brought to life on the big screen. While many films root their stories in real history, actual historical accuracy tends to get left on the cutting room floor. Thankfully, one historian is standing up to angry film fans across the world and is setting the record straight about five of the greatest historical movies of all time.
Historian Dan Snow of History Hit compiled the five best historical films of all time and, mercifully, tore them apart for historical inaccuracies. Every single year since the dawn of cinema has had its fair share of instant classics. From the very beginning in the 1910s to modern-day 21st-century releases. The technological revolution has enabled filmmakers to tell the stories that they've always dreamed of telling, and the results are beautiful. During Hollywood's early years, there were around 2,000 movies produced a year, which is already an impossible total for any one person to keep up with. Studies show that as of 2024, an average of 10,000 films are produced each year from a wide variety of countries, studios, and filmmakers. The output has increased year after year and seemingly will continue to slowly rise with time.
Due to the constant hit parade of film releases, it is inevitable that some classics are going to be swept under the rug and forgotten. One of these forgotten gems came from Universal Pictures in 1993. Heart and Souls is...

Stars: Robert Lasardo, Lorelei Linklater, Rich R. Rendon, Gigi Gustin, Costas Mandylor, Tom Sizemore, Elissa Dowling | Written by Robert Lasardo, Adrian Milnes | Directed by Robert Lasardo
Robert Lasardo’s American Trash marks both the directorial debut and a major change of pace for the prolific actor, whose first role was almost forty years ago in Abel Ferrara’s China Girl. Over the years he’s become known for roles in films like In Hell, Bridge of the Doomed and Amber Road, but he’s chosen to make a drama that trades physical brutality for an unflinchingly brutal look at pain, loss and the toll modern society can take on people.
Milles (Robert Lasardo) is a combat veteran who now works as a tattoo artist while trying to get a grip on his Ptsd issues. One of the few things that seems to bring him a sense of peace is listening...

Known for his sports films such as White Men Can’t Jump and Bull Durham, writer-director Ron Shelton has shown time and again that he is more than capable of making a sports movie work. However, when his 1999 feature Play It to the Bone was released, it was a total box office flop despite having a massive cast of familiar faces. Critics panned it, fans were left unsatisfied, and the film wasn’t even able to break even on its $24 million budget. Essentially, it was a failure on every front. Today, it holds a miserable 11% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
After 25 years, though, it might be time to revisit the film. It’s not all bad — the story follows two aging boxers: Vince Boudreau (Woody Harrelson) and Cesar Dominguez (Antonio Banderas). When an opportunity arises for these two good friends to have one last fight, they happily take the chance. The...

"Kindergarten Cop" is the quintessential 90s movie. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, the defining action star of the era, in a role few thought he could pull off, and it's directed by one of the most prolific filmmakers of the decade. The film also features a cast of young actors just before they went on to achieve major success. Now, we're looking back at the talent involved in "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman's popular 1990 comedy to find out what they're up to these days, mainly because we love reminding ourselves just how old we are.
For those unaware, "Kindergarten Cop" follows Detective John Kimble (Arnold) as he goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to bust a dangerous criminal. Like "Twins," Reitman's previous collaboration with Arnold, "Kindergarten Cop" blends comedy with drama, plus a hefty dose of surprisingly violent action, resulting in the perfect movie to show kids of all ages in...

Quarrels and tussles between celebrities are a common occurrence in the film industry, for one can often find some or the other celebrity butting heads. These are even more common when it comes to film sets and history is full of such infamous accidents when sparks flew all in the wrong direction off-screen.

A decidedly coy Michael Mann said little about Heat 2, his follow-up film to the 1995 crime drama Heat that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, while attending the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday.
“The next (movie) I’d like to do is Heat 2,” Mann reiterated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during an informal conversation in Old City Al Balad after an earlier screening of Heat at the festival. He was careful to reveal little about the screenplay for the project, which Mann has reportedly set up at Warner Bros. “It has to be finished really soon.”
The Heat sequel has been on the back burner for some time now, but Mann breathed new life into the project with his 2022 crime novel Heat 2, co-written by the 81-year-old director and author Meg Gardiner, which acts as both a prequel and a sequel to Mann’s 1995 crime film classic. The book became a No.

Attention all fans of '90's cinema and off-the-wall action, please take note: Point Break is leaving Netflix on December 1st of this year. The film — which stars Keanu Reeves as FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer and criminal Bodhi — is essential viewing for anyone who likes action that leaves you at the edge of your seat, and incredibly compelling character dynamics that pull you into a world of thievery done just for the thrill of it.
Rather than simply being a conventional game of cat-and-mouse between cop and robber — such as venerated classics like Michael Mann's Heat — Point Break is groundbreaking in its commitment to entangling Reeves' character Johnny with the mastermind Bodhi. The criminal has an alluring philosophy, one of constantly chasing the ultimate thrill, and it draws the undercover cop into their dangerous lifestyle. Michael Mann opens up about the development of Heat 2, shining a light on the unusual creative process in bringing his long-awaited crime drama sequel to life. Mann's original 1995 feature starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as an LAPD cop and a thief who share a complicated relationship due to the things they have in common, despite their different paths in life. Alongside Pacino and De Niro, Heat's cast featured Val Kilmer, Natalie Portman, Diane Venora, Amy Brenneman, Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight.
Almost thirty years after the original Heat was released in theaters, Mann discusses the current status of Heat 2's preproduction with Collider. While the director confirms that the script is nearing completion, he reveals that it has driven him to have a number of sleepless nights due to his creative process.

You have three seconds to name Wesley Snipes’ best ‘90s action movie: Go! As the numbers tally, only six options remain: New Jack City, Passenger 57, Boiling Point, Rising Sun, Demolition Man, and Blade. If we’re talking crime-action, New Jack City reigns supreme. Horror-Action? Blade all damn day. Sci-Fi Action? Demolition Man is too silly to miss. But if we’re simply counting hyper-violent, hard-boiled action fare – it’s hard to elevate above Passenger 57 – a lean, mean, bullet-laced blitzkrieg of thrilling throwback action made in the wake of Die Hard. In the film, Snipes portrays John Cutter, a badass airport security expert who finds himself in a hijacked airliner overrun by Charles “The Rane of Terror” Rane and his undercover henchmen.
Despite overtly adopting the Die Hard formula of isolating a grumpy, charismatic hero in a single location and pitting them against a troupe of gun-toting terrorists, Passenger 57...

Morgan Freeman Had A Brutally Honest Response To Script Of Stephen King Adaptation With 28% Rt Score

Dreamcatcher's Thomas Jane reveals Morgan Freeman's first reaction to the Stephen King adaptation film. Based on King's novel of the same name, Dreamcatcher is a 2003 body horror film about a group of friends on a snowy camping trip who discover that the Maine woods have another visitor: parasitic aliens from space. The film was directed by Lawrence Kasdan, who also co-wrote the movie's screenplay alongside William Goldman. Dreamcatcher featured a leading cast including Freeman, Jane, Jason Lee, Damian Lewis, Timothy Olyphant, Tom Sizemore, Donnie Wahlberg, Reece Thompson, and Giacomo Baessato.
Per The Kingcast, Jane explains Freeman's first reaction to Dreamcatcher. According to the Henry actor, director Kasdan wanted to have a staged reading of the film, where all the actors could sit down and read the script prior to filming. Jane recalls that the cast "read the whole damn thing from beginning to end," noting that "it takes longer reading for some reason.

Imagine if Al Pacinos Lieutenant Vincent Hanna had taken a hit of coke on-screen in Heat. Such a display of drug use certainly would have, at the very least, altered Pacinos character in the eyes of moviegoers. And who knows what the ramifications would have been if detective Hanna went up against the conniving career criminal Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) while clearly coked up in director Michael Manns classic crime drama nearly 30 years ago. And thanks to Pacino, fans now know that just such a scene was left on the cutting room floor.
According to the meteoric, Academy Award-winning star who brought the larger-than-life character to life in the classic crime drama, a scene was indeed cut from Heat in which Hanna partook of some illegal stimulants. The 1990s were a period of change for the crime genre, and some of the decade's best movies are must-watch material for cinephiles. Directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese and David Fincher set about revitalizing the landscape of the crime genre in the 1990s. There were gritty, realistic thrillers as well as highly stylized crime movies which sought to deconstruct the many tropes of the genre.
To this day, the 1990s stand out as one of the best decades for crime movies, with a number of unimpeachable classics all being produced in a few short years. Not since the glory days of film noir had crime movies been so important and so popular. Some of these classic crime movies were inspired by real cases, which made them even more chilling, while others were pure fantasy. There are some '90s crime movies that every self-respecting film fan should watch.

A forgotten revenge thriller from 2004 made Yellowstone's Cole Hauser the lead over co-stars like Matthew McConaughey and Chris Rock. Cole Hauser's movie CV is a long and storied one, with the star having first made an impression in the likes of Dazed and Confused and Good Will Hunting. The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. Jamie Lee Curtis has starred in critically-acclaimed movies from the very start of her career, and she is still making hits over 40 years later. Curtis got her on-screen debut in John Carpenter's Halloween. Her role as Laurie Strode immediately marked her out as a young actor worth watching, and she has returned to the franchise periodically throughout her career. She soon gained a reputation as an iconic scream queen of her generation.
Following her success in the horror franchise, Jamie Lee Curtis starred in comedy movies to diversify her repertoire. Starting with Trading Places, Curtis showed that she was also one of the best comedic actors in Hollywood. Curtis became much less prolific in the 2000s and early 2010s as she took a step back from Hollywood to focus on her family. Since returning, she has enjoyed a career renaissance, including some of her most famous roles.
