Plot: After the loss of his mother, a man risks everything to honor her by opening an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as the chefs.
Review: What is more comforting than a home-cooked meal made by your grandmother? It is a cliche that holds in the hearts of countless people regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. Good, heartwarming food can be as powerful an emotional trigger as anything. The new Netflix comedy, Nonnas, aims to hit you right in the feels with a sweet, family-friendly comedy about one man’s quest to open a restaurant in honor of his late mother by employing local Italian grandmothers, the titular nonnas, to be the chefs in his Staten Island establishment. With a cast of Italian-Americans evoking a story inspired by the real Enoteca Maria in New York, Nonnas is a safe and formulaic movie perfectly timed to Mother’s Day weekend.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Netflix serves up the perfect cinematic recipe for moms (and their devoted sons) with Nonnas.
The title is Italian for grandmothers, and this warm, old-fashioned feel-good comedy in the Moonlight tradition and based on true events is tailor-made for its Mother’s Day weekend debut. Writer Liz Maccie provides some irresistible material for her real-life husband, director Stephen Chbosky, that is guaranteed to touch the heart and make no apologies for doing so. It also will make you very hungry.
A well-cast Vince Vaughn, miles away from his Swingers and Wedding Crashers past, plays the real-life dreamer Jody Scaravella (who goes by Joe or Joey), born and living in Brooklyn, who works for the Mta and always has been a loving son to his mom. When she dies, he is lost — until coming up with a plan to honor her and her mother,...

Like the old-school cooks in his new movie, Stephen Chbosky understands the importance of good ingredients. To tell the story of a middle-aged man’s impulsive leap into restaurant ownership, he’s gathered an accomplished cast wielding effortless charm. Nonnas is home-style all the way, forgoing jaw-dropping plating for something more reliable and predictable. It will strike a nostalgic chord or two for many viewers, and at any rate offers a welcome change of pace from Netflix’s true-crime and action offerings.
Vince Vaughn brings an unforced sincerity to the role of inexperienced entrepreneur Joey Scaravella, and the four nonnas (grandmothers) who join him in his unconventional culinary enterprise are played by Lorraine Bracco, Susan Sarandon, Talia Shire and Brenda Vacarro — heavy hitters moving nimbly. Though the movie unabashedly celebrates women in their 70s and 80s, it hasn’t the strained sensibility of those “ain’t these old gals something?...

There are shows and characters which, despite running their course, leave a significant mark on the networks and audiences who were a part of their run. Gabriel Macht's Harvey Specter and the world of Suits is one such show, and in recent times, NBC resurrected the Suits universe with a spinoff, Suits LA. The network looks set to do the same with another show from the USA Network which aired its series finale nine years ago. The medical dramedy, Royal Pains, is being eyed for a revival on NBC, according to Deadline. A revival will also feature the return of original star Mark Feuerstein, who looks set to reprise his role as Dr. Henry "Hank" Lawson.
From 2009-2016, Royal Pains ran for eight seasons during a time when the USA Network could comfortably boast of having some of the best shows on television. Other memorable shows released at that time,...

Thirty years ago, writer and director Edward Burns’ “The Brothers McMullen” was one of several films — alongside Cameron Crowe‘s “Singles,” Ben Stiller’s “Reality Bites,” and Nicole Holofcener‘s “Walking and Talking,” among many others — that spoke directly to the emotional issues and social anxieties of Generation X. After Burns, now in his fifties, became an empty nester and started to think about how that changed his identity and his marriage — and those of his friends in the same age group — he realized there was fertile ground for a new drama that would address this new stage of life for Generation X-ers the way that “McMullen” had represented the 1990s.
“There were a lot of conversations in my group of friends asking, ‘What does tomorrow look like now that you don’t define yourself as a parent and you’re not actively parenting anymore?,” Burns told IndieWire. “How do you define the marriage?...

Thirty years ago, Edward Burns won the coveted Grand Jury prize for his low-budget indie feature The Brothers McMullen at Sundance. The charming actor and filmmaker would go on to co-star in Steven Spielberg's masterpiece Saving Private Ryan, guest-star in shows like HBO's infamous Entourage (where the guys called him "Eddie"), and continue to shoot his own independent films throughout the years. His latest is Millers in Marriage, which, with its New York-set subject matter, might even bring you back to that acclaimed project that put Burns on the map three decades ago. If you haven't seen The Brothers McMullen, that's A-ok — and might even work in Burns' favor.

Michael Crichton must’ve known he struck gold — if not mosquito-filled amber — when Steven Spielberg managed to acquire the film rights to Jurassic Park before the novel was even published. It was his vision that would come to capture the imagination of an entire generation once the result of Spielberg’s tireless efforts indelibly altered cinema as we know it today.
There’s no filmmaker other than Spielberg who proudly holds the distinction of having directed the highest-grossing film of all time on three different occasions. Each time he’s done so, he’s managed to find a new reason for us to believe he’s one of the greatest filmmakers in history. Jurassic Park is a cultural landmark, yet somehow only the tip of the iceberg of what Spielberg is able to accomplish when he’s at the top of his game. Friends arrived in the 1990s to change the sitcom genre and has an incomparable legacy, but it was almost sued due to how similar it is to a 1992 rom-com with 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1990s is home to some of the most memorable and successful sitcoms, all of them offering something unique and fun. Friends premiered on NBC in 1994 and became one of the most successful TV shows ever, running for a total of 10 seasons and ending in 2004. Friends broke various records and continues to be regarded as one of the greatest TV shows ever made.
The concept of Friends is simple, but was very effective as it deeply connected with the audience: six friends with different personalities, goals, and backgrounds navigate adulthood together. Throughout 10 seasons, Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), and Ross (David Schwimmer) won the audience over with...

As Hollywood’s one of the most versatile actors recently turned 70, it is time to consider more than the roles J.K. Simmons is best known for, like J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man or the terrifying music teacher in Whiplash. The Amazing Spider-Man's franchise star claims he isn't caught up in the web of rumors surrounding a potential lead role in one of Martin Scorsese's next projects. Acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield addresses claims he's set to portray Jesus Christ in the Academy Award-winning director's upcoming film, A Life of Jesus.
During an interview with GQ, Garfield addressed his future in acting and whether his reported role in A Life of Jesus is a part of it. Despite suggestions that Scorsese eyed him to play the Son of God, Garfield denied his involvement in the movie, claiming, “There was a rumor. It’s strange how the movies you see as a child tend to stick with you throughout the years. Odder still are the movies that have a profound personal impact on you because of one specific scene. Over the years, I’ve written about plenty of them for this long-running feature I’ve done on JoBlo called The Best Movie You Never Saw. For me, one such movie is the 1991 thriller Dead Again, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also co-stars along with his then-wife, Emma Thompson, Derek Jacobi, Andy Garcia and the late, great Robin Williams (in an unbilled role). I saw this at ten years old on the Canadian equivalent of HBO, First Choice, and it had a profound impact on me for one specific reason I’ll get to shortly.
But first, some background on this often overlooked film. In the late eighties,...

Edward Burns returns to the old ground with “Millers in Marriage,” a subtle exploration of love, compromise, and human progress that represents a personal return to the intimate storytelling that launched his career. Burns digs back into the nuances of family dynamics, this time via the eyes of three fifty-something siblings navigating the challenging terrain of long-term partnerships, nearly three decades after his breakout film “The Brothers McMullen.”
Set in New York City, the film follows the Miller siblings—Eve, Maggie, and Andy—as they navigate the subtle yet seismic upheavals that may disrupt even the most seemingly stable marriages. Each character symbolizes a distinct aspect of midlife relationship challenges: Eve, a former musician managing an alcoholic spouse; Maggie, a successful novelist navigating her husband’s creative stagnation; and Andy, an artist reconstructing his romantic life after a surprise divorce.

Stanley Tucci knows his way around a kitchen. No stranger to Italian cuisine, Tucci co-directed one of the best movies centered around food and the restaurant business in his directorial debut alongside Campbell Scott. Big Night immerses itself in the aromas of pasta sauces, meats, and the sweltering heat of chaotic kitchens cooking up unappreciated masterpieces. It follows the story of two Italian brothers who emigrated from Italy to America to open up an authentic Italian restaurant on the Jersey Shore. Set in the 50s, the film co-stars Tony Shalhoub as Tucci's brother, and the two have a complicated, tense relationship inside the kitchen as they battle over the right way to run it.

The Jurassic World Dominion cast brought together the two ensembles of characters from the current trilogy as well as the original. Directed by Colin Trevorrow from a screenplay he co-wrote with Emily Carmichael, Jurassic World Dominion marks the final film in the trilogy and the sixth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise. It wraps up a story that first began in Steven Spielbergs 1993 film and brings back plenty of familiar faces from the original for the Jurassic World 3 cast.
Set four years after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jurassic World Dominion explores a world that is shared by humans and dinosaurs alike. Dinosaur black markets have cropped up, poachers hunt the prehistoric creatures, and locusts are destroying harvests around the globe. Meanwhile, the villainous Jurassic Park rival Biosyn returns for more corporate wrongdoing. Stanley Tucci grew up playing sports but interested in the drama club. Close friends with future actor and director Campbell Scott as a teen, they both got their first break when Scotts mother arranged for them to appear as soldiers in the play The Queen and the Rebels with her on Broadway in 1982. Since then, Tucci hasnt looked back.

‘Millers in Marriage’ Review: Edward Burns Contends with Age and Art-Making in Mature Mid-Life Drama

In the films and television shows he’s made as a writer-director, Edward Burns has never not made things personal, but retaining the same level of creative control that he had on his breakthrough “The Brothers McMullen” has often required working on modest budgets and with younger casts and crews, naturally making the work itself move farther away from who he is now. In a marketplace starved of thoughtful adult dramas, that makes his return to center stage in “Millers in Marriage” a welcome one, as Burns mines territory he’s familiar with after turning 50.
“All I’m looking for is a stable relationship with a woman my own age,” Burns’ character Andy can be heard telling his new girlfriend Renee (Minnie Driver), putting her at ease when she worries he might want kids. They’re at a summer home that Renee got in a divorce, and by the standards of “Millers in Marriage,...

There is something almost remarkable about how “Millers in Marriage,” a relationship drama written and directed by Edward Burns (who also co-stars), manages to gather a group of some otherwise acclaimed actors, sticks them in rooms to talk through what are inevitably emotionally charged situations that their characters are facing, and comes out with something so empty. This void of a movie has plenty of the right pieces to work with at hand, but continually arranges them in the most blunt, least interesting manner possible. It’s a film that bolds, underlines and then shouts at you what it’s about, though never authentically earns your emotional investment.
Save for the more measured performance of Minnie Driver, none of the other actors emerge unscathed as all get dragged down by overwritten dialogue and painfully unsubtle storytelling.

Netflix confirmed the deal, and offered reaction from Nonnas‘ filmmaking team:
Gigi Pritzker, whose Madison Wells originated the film, said she was “delighted that Nonnas has found a great home at Netflix, where it will be widely seen and enjoyed. The film focuses on family, food and community, and in this turbulent time those are things we can all celebrate.”
Said Fifth Season Head of Film Christopher Slager: “Once again Stephen Chbosky has brought magic to the screen in this heartfelt and joyous film. We cannot wait for audiences everywhere to sit down at the table with us and share this fantastic film thanks to our partners at Netflix.”

The deal was brokered by WME Independent and Fifth Season, latter of which was the studio on the film. It marks the third deal in the run-up to a Toronto Festival that is chock full of acquisition titles, including some titles that played Telluride. This after the Dito Montiel-directed Riff Raff was acquired for US by Roadside Attractions, and Sony Pictures Classics acquired Jane Austen Wrecked My Life before its TIFF premiere.
The available titles that buyers saw at Telluride include September 5, about how ABC Sports team broadcasting the 1972 Olympics in Munich, German rose to the moment and covered the kidnap and massacre of 11 members of the Israeli team in real time. The twists and turns and split-second decisions they made under Roone Arledge make for a harrowing thriller. Also in that mix is The Friend. In that film, Bill Murray plays an acclaimed writer whose companion is a Great Dane named Apollo. When he dies, the dog is adopted by one of the writer’s protegees (Naomi Watts) who tries to stash the oversized high-maintenance pooch in her Manhattan rent-controlled apartment, which has a firm no dogs allowed policy. Scott McGehee and David Siegel direct a film that was one of the buzz titles of Tellurides.
While recent TIFF deal making has been slow going each year since the pandemic, the abundance of plum titles with strong casts, and an expected buyer appetite could portend a strong atmosphere for deals. TIFF begins tomorrow night.

And we’re back. We’re back to possession and we are back to it being heavy on the religious side and everything purported to be a true story. This time we are looking a little deeper into the legal implications of what happens when someone is injured or even dies during an exorcism, sanctioned or not. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (watch it Here) was a massive commercial hit and garnered middle of the pack reviews when it came out in 2005. 2005 was not a banner year for horror and it was different from the slew of remakes as well as setting itself apart from nearly everything else that came out that year. While The Asylum, known for schlock takes on popular products, would release their version of the true story in 2011 and German film Requiem would come out to far better acclaim the next year, Emily Rose would be...

But the film is most...
