‘Bad Thoughts’ Netflix Review: Tom Segura’s Comedy Series Is Traumatizing And Funny
Image
Up to 2020 I used to watch a lot of stand-up comedy. I guess my introduction to the genre was through Seinfeld. After that, I used to actively seek out old videos of Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, George Carlin, and every other comic who built the bedrock of this profession. And I used to keep track of the newcomers, especially from India, because it was so interesting to get fresh and hilarious perspectives on things I encountered in my daily life. But then the pandemic happened, live shows were shut down, and all those Zoom sessions didn’t really cut it anymore. Then Bo Burnham released Inside and changed everything. Crowdwork didn’t seem funny anymore. Observations about urinals and, I don’t know, sliced bread fell flat. Jokes about the transgender community and sexist humor, which weren’t amusing to me to begin with, felt all the more crass.

“To do it again animated, we can go forever,” said Crews in an interview. “That’s the plan. Let’s get some of that Family Guy, Simpsons kinda stuff. I want that 20-year longevity on that show.”

After Everybody Hates Chris ran for four seasons on Upn/The CW from 2005 to 2009, recounting Chris Rock‘s childhood as a skinny Black nerd from a working class family in 1980s Brooklyn, the comedian returned his narrator role with the animated revival that premiered in September.

Image
The great rock-funk-soul band Sly and the Family Stone didn’t just make hits in the 1960s and ‘70s, they made “culture-changing hits,” in the words of no less a figure than record mogul Clive Davis. Hits like “Everyday People,” “Stand!”, “Dance to the Music,” “Family Affair” and “If You Want Me to Stay.”

But if the group released so many incredible songs, why do we remember them now mostly for the personal troubles of bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone? That question underpins the Emmy-contending documentary Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), directed by Oscar winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

Questlove joins the latest edition of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to share his observations on what made Sly Stone great and what impelled him to tumble from the mountaintop of rock stardom. It’s got much to do with crushing expectations placed on Black genius (hence his...

Despite Its Horrible Rt Score, This Movie Is Will Smith’s Most Underrated Work
Image
Will Smith is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. From blockbuster franchises like Men in Black and Independence Day to critically acclaimed performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has proven his versatility time and time again. While his movies have collectively raked in billions, not all of his work gets the recognition it really deserves.

Among his vast filmography lies a film that didn’t receive much love when it first hit theaters. Sometimes it takes time for people to realise what a real gem is. It has since found its place in the hearts of viewers. The name of the movie is Focus.

Though it was released to mixed reviews and a modest box office performance, Focus brought something unique to the table. A crime drama with a splash of romance and humor, this 2015 film starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie is an underrated gem that deserves more appreciation.

Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Tolman never came back after Season 2, but we now know this wasn’t due to a lack of interest. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Tolman was asked about her time on Fargo, and she spoke about it fondly but also recalled how difficult it was to stand on the sidelines after departing the show:

Kevin Smith Has Been Writing Dogma 2, But There Will Be Two Major Changes In The Sequel
Image
For the longest time, word about what might be happening with the 1999 Kevin Smith opus "Dogma" was nil. Trapped in the clutches of the Weinstein Brothers, it seemed that the original movie was likely to never be re-released in theaters or on physical or streaming media, never mind the long-rumored sequel coming to pass. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of Iconic Events and others, Smith has regained control of the film and as such, has embarked on a massive multi-city tour, showing a spiffy new restoration of the movie as well as appearing in super-sized post-screening Q&a sessions. Both this writer and /Film's Ethan Anderton were lucky to attend a couple of these screenings, and got to hear some fascinating tales about the making of "Dogma" and its resurrection.

Although Smith mentioned at both screenings that he is currently working on a proper "Dogma" sequel, it was at the...

Bob Odenkirk Says ‘Saturday Night Live’ Writers Use Up All Their Good Ideas By Christmas
Image
It’s hard to come up with quality comedy sketches on a weekly basis for almost a half-year straight, which is probably why so many Saturday Night Live veterans from Bob Odenkirk's time were always dreaming of a White Christmas in the writers’ room.

Saturday Night Live is legendary for its ability to cause its writers and performers to develop comical levels of job burnout due to its grueling production schedule. The late nights and long hours of the 30 Rockefeller Plaza workplace are often romanticized by the alumni who turned their SNL start into a thriving career with much more manageable hours of operation, but of all the nostalgic A-list comedy talent who once called SNL home, Odenkirk isn’t one to wax poetic about the weekly nightmare that produces each episode of the sketch series.

While Odenkirk has since expressed his gratitude for how hard SNL pushed him...

This ‘Simpsons’ Character’s Ethnicity Just Got Even More Confusing
Image
Even after 36 years, The Simpsons is somehow still revealing new information about beloved characters we’ve known for decades. Like how we all just found out about Superintendent Chalmers’ seemingly insatiable libido. Well, this week’s episode uncovered more details of Moe Szyslak’s backstory, specifically, it shed some new light on his increasingly confusing genealogical history.

In “Abe League of Their Moe,” Moe is able to lure a wildly talented Macedonian baseball player to sign up to play for the Springfield Isotopes, beating out rival pitches from celebrities such as New York Mets fan Chris Rock and Danny Trejo, who’s working on behalf of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

How does this happen? Because Moe speaks Macedonian. The bartender reveals that he learned the language from his grandmother. This was back when he was an infant wearing a bread bag for a diaper, and she would accuse him of...

Saturday Night Live's 15 Most Controversial Sketches And Moments So Far
Image
"Saturday Night Live" has been a comedy institution since 1975. It's helped launch the careers of some of the biggest names in the entertainment business, from Bill Murray to Adam Sandler, and brought quotable lines like "Schwing!" and "We are two wild and crazy guys!" to the modern pop culture lexicon. Even if you don't watch regularly, there's a good chance "SNL" has influenced your life in one way or another, and plenty of folks likely have fond memories of watching the show growing up.

But as is the case with anything that's been around for several decades, not everything from "SNL" has aged so well. The late night sketch series has its share of moments it'd probably want you to forget, many of which were hilariously eulogized during the "SNL 50" anniversary celebration. Whether it's jokes that have aged poorly or gags that should have been instantly questionable, to the point...

Biggest Celebrity Scandals
Image
Biggest Celebrity Scandals, where fame turns into a circus, and reputations crumble faster than a house of cards in a hurricane. Hollywood isn’t just about talent, it’s also a stage for outrageous fiascos, jaw-dropping betrayals, and PR disasters so disastrous they deserve their own museum. One minute, a celebrity is adored; the next, they’re being roasted on every social media platform known to mankind.

Some scandals are so mind-boggling they make you question reality, like when someone gets caught red-handed but still insists, “It’s not what it looks like.” Others spiral out of control in real-time, with fans, haters, and long-lost acquaintances chiming in like it’s a neighborhood gossip session. Relationships implode, careers nosedive, and somewhere in the chaos, a publicist is probably chugging coffee, trying to fix the unfixable.

Pope Francis The Film Buff: Pontiff Cited Federico Fellini’s ‘La Strada’ As Favorite Movie
Image
Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, had a special relationship with cinema going back to his childhood in Buenos Aires.

“I owe my cinema culture above all to my parents who took us to the cinema a lot,” the pontiff said in a 2013 interview, a few months after his election as head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in the Argentinian capital in 1936 to parents with roots in northern Italy, Italian cinema figured highly in his early cinema-going.

In the same 2013 interview, Pope Francis named Federico Fellini’s 1954 Oscar-winning work La Strada, starring Giulietta Masina as fragile protagonist Gelsomina who is abused by brutish circus strongman Zampanò, played by Anthony Quinn, as the film he loved the most.

“I identify with that film, in which there is an implicit reference to Saint Francis,” said the pontiff referring to its themes of love...

Hocus Pocus: Kathy Najimy Nearly Skipped The Film Over Concerns About Playing A Witch
Image
Kathy Najimy Hocus Pocus(Photo Credit –Instagram)

Kathy Najimy almost ghosted Hocus Pocus, and it had nothing to do with a spell. Before the Sanderson Sisters flew into cult-classic status on their broomsticks, one of them nearly didn’t show up to the coven. Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson), had major doubts about joining the 1993 Halloween flick. The reason was she didn’t want to offend real witches.

The original Hocus Pocus followed three resurrected witches wreaking havoc in Salem on Halloween night. The Sanderson Sisters — Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Najimy) — quickly became iconic. Between the outrageous costumes, the over-the-top performances, and that unforgettable rendition of “I Put a Spell on You,” the trio turned a modest Disney comedy into a seasonal essential.

The Brutalist Streaming Release Update: When & Where To Watch Adrien Brody’s Architectural Drama Online
Image
Brody In Concrete Drama (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Prepare to step into The Brutalist’s sleek, concrete world, where architecture is cold, emotions run hot, and Adrien Brody wears existential angst like a tailored suit. Directed by Brady Corbet, cinema’s reigning king of beautifully strange period pieces, this A24 epic follows László Tóth, a Hungarian Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor chasing the elusive American Dream through steel beams and moral compromises.

It’s not just about buildings, it’s about rebuilding after everything’s been torn down. Brody leads a loaded cast through a gorgeously moody spiral of ambition, trauma, and minimalist walls. It’s the kind of film that whispers, “What if trauma could be designed?”

Equal parts art installation and emotional gut punch, The Brutalist is giving us brooding drama with sharp edges, and we’re here for it. Bonus: it’s finally streaming soon, so you can...

When John Wayne Nearly Stormed The 1973 Oscars Stage Over An Unexpected Speech: “Had To Be Restrained By Six Men”
Image
Throwback To John Wayne’s Infamous Oscars 1973 Moments! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Before Will Smith ever slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, John Wayne nearly caused his own headline-grabbing scene. At the 1973 Academy Awards, the True Grit icon had to be physically restrained by six security guards because he was seconds away from storming the stage.

That year, The Godfather dominated the night. Marlon Brando won Best Actor but ditched the ceremony. In his place, activist Sacheen Littlefeather appeared on stage. Dressed in traditional Apache attire, she calmly rejected Brando’s Oscar while drawing attention to the portrayal of Native Americans in Hollywood and the ongoing Wounded Knee Occupation.

The crowd wasn’t ready. Boos echoed through the room. Some listened. But behind the scenes? It got real. John Wayne was allegedly waiting in the wings, ready to charge. It wasn’t a dramatic metaphor. He reportedly tried to get on...

When Adrien Brody Passed On The Lord Of The Rings & Called It His Dumbest Move Ever
Image
Does Adrian Brody regret skipping The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

The Oscar winner, Adrian Brody, admitted he didn’t quite get what he was being offered, and by the time he figured it out, it was already lighting up box offices and changing fantasy cinema forever.

Brody spilled the regret in a throwback chat with GQ (via The Hollywood Reporter), saying producers approached him for the Peter Jackson epic, but he just wasn’t feeling it. “I, somehow, didn’t grasp it,” he said. “I don’t know what part I would have been right for, but it was some Hobbit-like character. I was looking for something else.”

Translation: he wasn’t chasing hairy feet and wizard quests back then.

But his “what was I thinking?” moment hit hard later. He remembered in the same interview sitting in the theater with his then-girlfriend,...

When Rebecca Ferguson Almost Quit Dune—Her Blunt Take on Lady Jessica Says It All!
Image
Did Rebecca Ferguson almost pass on Dune? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

At first, Rebecca Ferguson didn’t see the point in playing Lady Jessica. She thought the role was another dressed-up, one-dimensional woman written to exist in the shadow of a male lead. Been there, done that.

“When he explained the character, I thought, really? You want me to be regal and poised and ask me to do a role that I have played so many times before? I would literally be a teapot for you, but I don’t think that’s the role for me, dude” (via Variety).

That was Ferguson’s brutally honest response to director Denis Villeneuve when he pitched the role to her. Safe to say, she wasn’t sold. But Villeneuve didn’t give up. Instead, he flipped the entire conversation by showing Ferguson a version of Lady Jessica that didn’t exist in the original source material,...

When Keanu Reeves Mastered A Wild Skill Just For The First Scene Of John Wick 4
Image
Which special skill did Keanu Reeves have to learn for John Wick 4? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Yes, you see, this time, the guy had to saddle up, literally. For the film’s opening sequence, Keanu Reeves had to master horseback riding, and not just the casual kind. He aimed to fast-gallop through the desert like a seasoned rider. As he put it during an Esquire interview, “There’s a sequence—hopefully, knock on wood—in John Wick 4, the opening sequence. John Wick is back in the desert on a horse. I’m going to hopefully be able to fast-gallop and run.”

Now that’s not what fans expected. After all, the John Wick series thrived on neon shootouts, slick martial arts, and stylish mayhem. But tossing Reeves back into the wild terrain on horseback was peak Wick, and he didn’t shy away from the challenge. When asked if...

When Daniel Craig Designed Bond’s $10K Omega Because 007 Doesn’t Just Wear Any Watch
Image
Did Daniel Craig design his own watch for No Time To Die? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Yep, Bond didn’t just wear the watch. He helped build it. Back in 2021, No Time To Die marked Craig’s final run as 007. But instead of just suiting up, the actor went deeper. He got hands-on with the design of the signature Omega watch.

Forbes reported that Daniel Craig had major input on the timepiece, from its build to its style. That titanium mesh bracelet? All him. The watch had to be lightweight, military-tough, and packed with edge. The Bond edge.

Craig reportedly pushed for Grade 2 titanium for the case. Why? Because it aged well, looked sleek, and kept things feather-light on the wrist. He also wanted a few color accents for some extra flair. And yes, he requested military nods, because a Bond watch shouldn’t just look good, it should feel tactical.

When Will Smith Revealed How A Teenage Jaden Smith Wanted Legal Emancipation After The Failure Of This Movie: “He Felt Betrayed”
Image
Which Movie Led To Jaden Smith Seeking Legal Emancipation From Will Smith?(Photo Credit – Instagram)

Will Smith built a career out of blockbuster wins. But in a raw confession from his 2021 memoir Will, he admitted to creating one of his biggest personal regrets. The movie? After Earth. The fallout? It nearly wrecked his bond with his son, Jaden Smith.

At just 15, Jaden found himself at the center of a Hollywood flop that didn’t just bomb but hit him where it hurt. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring both Will and Jaden as a father-son duo surviving a post-apocalyptic world, After Earth opened to brutal reviews and a brutal box office. It made only $27 million in its debut weekend against a $130 million budget.

Will Smith took the heat in stride. Jaden Smith didn’t. “After Earth was an abysmal box office and critical failure,” Will wrote (via People). “And...

When Leonardo DiCaprio Saved Romeo + Juliet From A Rollerblade Disaster: “I Quickly Said No”
Image
Here’s How Leonardo DiCaprio’s Bold Move About Rollerblades Saved Romeo + Juliet! (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Before Romeo + Juliet became the wild, modern-day Shakespeare remix we still talk about, it nearly spun off in a totally different direction – on rollerblades. Yep, that almost happened. And 21-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio was the one who shut it down before it could crash the whole vibe.

In the mid-90s, Baz Luhrmann had a vision: Shakespeare with a twist. Think guns instead of swords, sleek cars, heavy religious symbolism, and chaotic party scenes. But somewhere in that brainstorm, rollerblades got tossed in. But DiCaprio wasn’t having it.

“At the beginning when we were just starting out, he wanted to make a lot of the characters go around on rollerblades and I quickly said no,” DiCaprio recalled years later (via Cheat Sheet). That call changed everything. Romeo + Juliet might have...
