Kathy Griffin filed for divorce from her estranged husband, Randy Bick, back in December, and she’s dealing with it “one day at a time.” The comedian spoke with People at the Era Coalition Forward Women’s Equality Trailblazer Awards & Still Working 9 to 5 premiere on Wednesday, May 29, where she was asked how she’s handling her divorce. “One day at a time,” Griffin said. “One show at a time. I thank God for this tour. I thank God it happened. I’m just so grateful to be on tour, so it takes my mind off it.” In February, Griffin kicked off her first tour in six years, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the Ptsd-List, which is described as “a celebration of her resilience, humor, and the power of laughter to heal.” “The great Joan Rivers used to say, ‘The more your life is in the s***, the funny you are,...

We may have had to wait two years for the third season of HBO Max’s “Hacks” to hit our screens but, boy, was it worth it. Ths third edition is a showcase for Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance, a veteran stand-up experiencing a resurgence in her career. Hannah Einbinder co-stars as Ava Daniels, a comedy writer working to kick-start her career.
The relationship between those two women is at the heart of the show and season three is no different, with the chemistry between Smart and Einbinder reaching new levels. This is, still, however, the Jean Smart show. She aces every moment of comedy, perfectly embodying the Joan Rivers type of comedian that Deborah is. But what elevates the character and Smart’s performance to the next level are the touches of humanity and vulnerability sown into the role.
Critics agree, Smart is turning in career-best work.

Oprah Winfrey said that she owns the “major role” she played in modern diet culture, saying she has taken time to process her own shame and now wants to support her audience in their own shift toward healthier mindsets.
“I wanted to gather all of us together because I believe that we have reached a pivotal moment in the way we talk about and the way we think about our bodies,” Winfrey told her in-person and virtual audience during Thursday’s Weight Watcher YouTube live special.
The talk show host went on to say that she acknowledges “that I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture. Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and online, I’ve been a major contributor to it. I cannot tell you how many weight-loss shows and makeovers I have done, and they have been a staple since...

Why Has Gen Z Produced So Few Major TV Stars? Gen Z TV stars appear to be on the wane as streaming subscriptions grow. Are Zoomers destined to avoid the small screen, or is something else afoot?
Time makes fools of us all. While Gen Z is still relatively young, it's easy to assume the entertainment industry is rife with young, up-and-coming Gen Z superstars.
The reality is far different. There isn't any hard data, polling, bar graphs, or percentages that throw back the curtains on the mind of the average Gen Z.
However, we don't exactly have to guess either. Like many things that seem simple on the outside, the answer to the dearth of Gen Z representation in movies and television is multifaceted.
Of course, it is. Nothing concerning the predispositions of an entire generation is ever simple. If that were the case, we would already know the answer,...

At the end of its second season, “Hacks” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.

Jennifer Lawrence had her fair share of feuds in the time of her career, but few have rarely been as high profile as her butting heads with Fashion Police alum Joan Rivers. The X-Men alum was so frustrated by their feud, that her public admission of it made the whole feud a lot uglier.

Tuesday night saw something that, fourteen years ago, might have seemed impossible: Conan O’Brien returned to “The Tonight Show.” And he was greeted with a standing ovation.
He was there, ostensibly, to promote a forthcoming Max series in which he travels the world meeting fans. But he’d come a long way just to get to 30 Rockefeller Center in 2024, and the interview with current “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon functioned as a peace offering, or a marker of how much time has passed.
O’Brien, after all, exited the program under a cloud in 2010, after a much-followed period of corporate intrigue. Inheriting the show from Jay Leno, O’Brien was set up to fail when NBC programmed a prime-time Leno series, which bombed, as his lead-in five nights a week; O’Brien departed the show after only seven months, at which point Leno replaced him. O’Brien comported himself throughout with a certain pained dignity,...

Conan O’Brien has set a return to “The Tonight Show,” slotting a guest appearance for next week’s April 9 broadcast. The occasion will mark the comedian and former late night host’s first time back on the program since his acrimonious exit from NBC in 2010, in which he was replaced by Jay Leno as the show’s host following a seven-month tenure.
O’Brien is on the publicity circuit to promote his coming travelogue series, “Conan O’Brien Must Go.” The show marks O’Brien’s first television project since his TBS late night show “Conan” ended in 2021 after 11 seasons on the air. “Conan O’Brien Must Go” debuts on Max on April 18.
Under the tenure of Jimmy Fallon, who has been helming “The Tonight Show” for more than 10 years, the program has established a pattern of welcoming back previous NBC deserters. In 2014, Fallon welcomed Joan Rivers as a guest, who had...

When Donald Trump left his seat in the boardroom as the star of his long-running NBC reality series “The Apprentice” in 2015, in order to run for president of the United States, he had a clear successor in mind.
“I said, ‘The best person to hire would be Ivanka Trump,’” Donald Trump says. “I didn’t press it. But I felt Ivanka would have been by far the best person you could hire.”
Trump shares this revelation in a new book about his years as a reality star, “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass,” written by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. The book peels back the curtain on how Trump’s decade playing an all-knowing mogul on TV shaped his image as a politician, ultimately catapulting him to the White House.

Mark Harmon is known for more than his adventures on his television series NCIS. The actor has been recognized for many roles and titles, and even once received the honor of being the Sexiest Man Alive. However, his wife Pam Dawber had a pretty unfavorable opinion of the title.

Harmon found out he was given the title of Sexiest Man Alive the same way most people did. The actor was enjoying an afternoon with his friends when the reveal caught him off guard.
“I’d done an interview with People about leaving St. Elsewhere and I went up to play basketball and both backboards on either side of the court were plastered with the [Sexiest Man Alive] cover,” Harmon said in a 2015 interview with People.

All late-night hosts hope to take their programs to new heights, but “The Tonight Show’s” Jimmy Fallon may not have expected to have to do so on his very first night behind the desk.
As evening approached on the night of February 17, 2014, Fallon found himself hustling up elevators to get to a rooftop at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza headquarters where U2 was set to perform. Lorne Michaels, the “SNL” executive producer who also has a hand in overseeing “Tonight,” felt the band would look best framed against the dusk, not a dark night sky. So Fallon, having just finished a bit in which celebrities like Robert De Niro and Joan Rivers paid him $100 after betting he wouldn’t get the “Tonight” job, was scrambling to get upstairs before his crew lost the light.

Hank Bradford, the clever stand-up comic who performed a half-dozen times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson before serving a five-year stint as head writer on the program, has died. He was 88.
Bradford died Jan. 18 in Los Angeles, his family announced.
Bradford did uncredited dialogue rewrites on the Burt Reynolds-starring Smokey and the Bandit (1977) — when he got the script, “it wasn’t a comedy,” he revealed to host Mark Malkoff on a 2017 episode of The Carson Podcast — and wrote for such TV shows as M*A*S*H, Private Benjamin and Three’s Company.
The Brooklyn native made his first appearance on the Tonight Show in September 1966 when it was based in New York. He got a spot inside the writers room in 1969, succeeded Marshall Brickman as head writer in 1970 and moved with the show to Burbank in 1972.

Why Mark Harmon and the Woman He Chose on ‘The Dating Game’ Stopped Dating: ‘She Was a Bird Trainer’
NCIS star Mark Harmon married his wife, Pam Dawber, nearly 40 years ago. But before he met her in 1986, he had trouble finding the great love of his life. While in college, Harmon tried his luck on The Dating Game twice, and he left the show with a woman he met. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Here’s what Harmon said about it.
Mark Harmon and the women he met on ‘The Dating Game’ didn’t last long
Before Mark Harmon was married, the NCIS star was a contestant on The Dating Game twice in college. The Dating Game aired from 1965 to 1986, and it first involved Harmon sitting next to two other bachelors hidden from the view of the bachelorette star. The bachelorette asked questions to the hidden men, and she chose the winner. She didn’t choose Harmon, but he later starred in the show as the bachelor choosing...

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s highly anticipated return to original television,”The Marvelous Mrs Maisel,” first premiered back in the spring of 2017 to bubbly, joyous acclaim. The Amazon Prime Video series chronicled the fictitious rise of recently separated Jewish-American housewife Miriam “Midge” Masiel (Rachel Brosnahan), as she pursued an unlikely career change to standup comedy. For its fifth and final season, the show nabbed 14 Emmy nominations including Luke Kirby as real-life comic Lenny Bruce in Best Comedy Guest Actor for the series finale, “Four Minutes.”
Having set the piece in late 1950s New York, Sherman-Palladino didn’t shy away from drawing her character inspirations from real-life figures of the time. Midge, for one, was largely based on trailblazing female comic and legend, Joan Rivers. The comic has gained notice on the long-running NBC late-night series for bizarre humor that blends gross-out jokes with a taste for the absurd. She’s been working with colleagues for months on new technology that would make the act of pretending to throw up onstage a lot easier — and more comfortable. For years, “SNL” cast members have relied on a tube tucked alongside their arm and usually inside a jacket sleeve that spews out liquid approximating vomit or blood. On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 10:00 Pm on Vice, “Dark Side of Comedy” presents Season 2, Episode 3, focusing on the legendary comedian Joan Rivers.
Joan Rivers is celebrated for her sharp wit and biting humor, which made her an iconic figure in the world of comedy. However, this episode delves into the darker aspects of her life and career. While she was a trailblazer in a male-dominated industry, the pressures took a toll on her well-being.
The show explores how Joan Rivers struggled with eating disorders, battled self-loathing, and became entangled in a dangerous addiction to plastic surgery. Rivers’ unfiltered humor often masked her personal struggles, and this episode sheds light on the challenges she faced behind the scenes.
“Dark Side of Comedy” provides an insightful and candid look into the complexities of comedy legends, and the Joan Rivers episode promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the highs and lows of her extraordinary career.

Never say never didn’t exactly happen for comedian and talk show host Melissa Rivers. Melissa was offered to join Dancing With the Stars when her mother, comedian Joan Rivers died. She turned down the opportunity but later wanted to join the dance competition show.
And they told her no thanks.
“They offered it to me years ago at a time that was not appropriate, which was right after my mom died,” she recalled on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast.

“I did not think that should be my return to TV moment. So I passed,” she said. “I know the woman that casts it for years and she’s lovely. In her shoes, I would have made the same offer. That’s her job and I’ve never been asked since.”
“In hindsight, you’re like, I would have done it a year later.

While Tamron Hall is the host of her successful, self-titled daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” there was a hypothetical world in which she may have been part of the late-night TV landscape. But Hall told TheWrap she’s not convinced that idea would have gotten past network executives.
It’s something Hall thought about earlier on in her career, and one that was suggested to her prior to the launch of her now two-time Emmy-winning talk series.
“I have a former producer at MSNBC who always said, ‘You should be in late night, you should be in late night,'” Hall said. But she also mentioned that she didn’t think there would be as clear of a lane for her to pursue late night in comparison to other on-camera talents who come from a different background.

Bianca Del Rio has nothing but fond and funny memories of meeting one of her idols, Joan Rivers, shortly before the legendary comedian’s death.
Rivers died nine years ago this week after being placed in a medically induced coma following complications from throat surgery.
TheWrap recently caught up with Del Rio and asked her about taping an episode of “In Bed With Joan” in 2014. The drag queen, who counts Rivers as one of her comedic inspirations, was the icon’s second-to-last guest on the YouTube series.
Del Rio had been crowned the winner of the sixth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” a few months prior, and in hindsight, the comic queen’s own quick wit and criticisms, which she styled after insult comics like Rivers and Don Rickles, helped her dominate the entire season.

It’s quiet in the Adidas office. Staff shuffle amongst themselves, having hushed conversations yet alert, waiting for the arrival of hip-hop’s greatest trio, Run-d.M.C.
Large glass windows span the entire length of the concrete room, overlooking Manhattan’s downtown area and into Brooklyn. Everything seems small in comparison, the tall ceiling dwarfing what lay below. But when Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons, surviving members of Run-d.M.C.’s trio, enter with Adidas President Rupert Campbell, all wearing shell-toe superstars of course, the room suddenly feels small.

Bradley Cooper was hit pretty much immediately with controversy as he unveiled a first look at his forthcoming Netflix pic Maestro, when the internet encountered the large prosthetic nose he’d adopted to portray legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. But Bernstein’s children have now come to his defense.
“Bradley Cooper included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein in a statement posted to their late father’s X page. “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.
“It breaks our hearts,” the trio continued, “to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of his efforts. It happens to be true that Leonard Bernstein had a nice, big nose. Bradley...

After Netflix released the first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, many viewers took issue with Cooper’s large prosthetic nose, deeming it the latest example of Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, known as “Jewface.”
But in a statement posted to Bernstein’s Twitter account, the late conductor’s children defended Cooper’s decision to “use makeup to amplify his resemblance” to their father. Cooper directed “Maestro” and stars as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Montealegre.

By the finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which finished up its five-season run this year, Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) has undergone a full transformation. No longer the aspiring comedian-slash-housewife we met when the show began, Midge, it turns out, becomes the great success it always seemed she would be.

In its last batch of episodes, showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino gave the audience a glimpse into the future through flash-forwards, complete with detailed aging makeup, that demonstrated the Joan Rivers-esque sensation Midge is to become — along with the complicated ties she has with her children. In the 1960s timeline, Midge lands a gig working at a talk show run by a Johnny Carson-type figure, Gordon Ford (Reid Scott), a job she parlays into the moment that finally makes her a big star. It’s a triumphant ending for the prickly fast-talker that also...

Chicago – When a smart and ambitious California girl moves from her “one horse town” to early 1970s Los Angeles, what better way to break into the show business than being an NBC-tv Studio Page for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and other programs of the era. Author Shelley Herman tells “My Peacock Tale.”
Ms. Herman recalls the almost impossible-to-imagine situations behind the scenes amidst a “who’s who” of 1970s entertainment culture. From a trip to see Elvis in Las Vegas that led to Shelley getting into the NBC-tv Page program to literally “breaking a leg” in an encounter that brought her an indelible moment with a musical hero, she also had an insider’s perspective on the historic feud between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson (when Rivers left her “Tonight Show” gig for her own talk show). “My Peacock Tale” tells all in the interpersonal, professional, and emotional...

Forget the pleasantries, today sucks. Paul Reubens, best known for his incomparable work as Pee-wee Herman, has passed away. The weird, wacky, and wonderful comedy figure is one of the most influential creatives ever to do it, and left in his wake is an irreplaceable void of silly, absurdist joy. Reubens' created the character of Pee-wee Herman while performing with The Groundlings, the legendary improvisational comedy troupe boasting alumni like Laraine Newman, Pat Morita, Craig T. Nelson, Jon Lovitz, Adrienne Barbeau, Conan O'Brien, Phil Hartman, Phil Lamarr, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Coolidge, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Will Forte, Annie Mumolo, Kaitlin Olson, Edi Patterson, Tony Cavalero, and a ridiculous number of other eventual "Saturday Night Live" players.
Pee-wee Herman was an immediate hit and led to Reubens writing, producing, directing, and starring in "The Pee-wee Herman Show." He quickly became a household name, and the Pee-wee character would get another show,...

By 1977, Dolly Parton songs had long been hits on country charts. She believed she could be a bigger star, though, so she hired Sandy Gallin as her manager. While they hit it off right away, he pushed her musically, believing that she could be a success on the pop charts too. She felt terrified that her first crossover song, “Here You Come Again,” would alienate her longtime listeners.
Dolly Parton released her first crossover song in 1977
After years of establishing herself as a country artist, Parton reached out to Gallin, who had already worked with a number of stars.
“I started right in telling him that I wanted to be a star, a big star,” she wrote in her book Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, adding, “I told him that with the right help there was no end to what I could do. I knew that he managed...

For nearly four decades, the Big Three networks dominated television, with any attempts at a fourth competitor quickly trounced. However, on October 9, 1986, a fourth network launched and steadily gained affiliates by offering innovative programming, often appealing to a younger demographic.
Fox has been the most successful network beyond the Big Three, despite a somewhat shaky beginning. The network launched with a short-lived late night talk show initially hosted by Joan Rivers, “The Late Show.” Then, beginning in April 1987, Fox gradually rolled out original primetime programming, starting with Sunday night premieres of two shows whose concepts were new to regular network programming. “Married. . .with Children” brought raunch to the family sitcom genre, raising the ire of conservative watchdog groups to the point that demands were made for a boycott; ironically, this actually brought attention to the series, and it achieved a whole new level of success. “The Tracey Ullman Show” delivered...

Geraldo Rivera’s 22-year run at Fox News appears to be coming to an end.
On Thursday afternoon, Rivera posted a video to his Twitter account filmed on a boat off the coast of Jones Beach in Long Island. In the video he told viewers, “I’ve been fired from The Five, and as a result of that I quit Fox.”
He added that he would elaborate on that decision on Fox & Friends on Friday morning.
Rivera said earlier this month that he was going to leave the 5 p.m. panel show, where he has been a regular panelist since last year. He had been expected to appear on Thursday’s episode.
“It’s been a great run and I appreciate having had the opportunity,” Rivera wrote at the time. “Being odd man out isn’t always easy. For the time being, I’m still Correspondent at Large.”

In last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race All-Stars season eight we saw Lala Ri and Heidi N Closet really shine as the bumbling duo of inexperience criminals and Jimbo claim the win after performing as an unhindered character dragged into a murderous rampage after being bullied by some popular girls in school! Jimbo keeps up her streak of losing every single lip-sync she had ever competed in on the show as we see the return of Shannel all the way from season one! I do have to say that the performance itself was fairly repetitive with the returning assassin twirling and Jimbo head-banging throughout! We sadly had to say farewell to Darienne Lake after Alexis Michelle essentially blamed the whole team’s shortcomings on her as the dead celebrity island was initially Darienne’s idea. I thought that while the idea was hers initially there was plenty...

It was a super-sized finale with plenty of excitement, heartbreaking moments, and, as always, laughs.
This episode saw the return of many characters, some we haven't seen much of (or at all) this season. We had Mrs. Moskowitz (hard-working as always), Alfie (in a cute little blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment), Imogene (we've missed you!), and of course, Lenny Bruce.
The episode starts off with Lenny's infamous Basin Street West performance. He would die the following year.
I was born famous.

The heartbreaking thing is, and this is a strange "reality" to think about, but if Midge had been able to go in, she probably would have been able...

It’s been almost nine years since comedy legend Joan Rivers died following complications during a minor throat procedure. On that day, her daughter Melissa Rivers not only lost her mother but also lost a business partner. They publicly shared their personal lives on the reality series “Joan Knows Best,” on the red carpet every awards season and as critics and producers on “Fashion Police.” If that sounds like the formula for a complicated relationship, you’re right.
“Anyone who says that mother-daughter relationships aren’t complicated is lying,” Melissa told TheWrap. “They can be amazing and you can be close and you can have wonderful relationships with mothers and daughters, but no matter what, they’re complicated.”
Although we got to see them standing on opposite sides of every red carpet during awards season with mic in hand interviewing celebrities who were dressed to the nines and asking “Who are you wearing?...

The limited series race at the Emmys is starting to heat up with shining new entries, established early shows and anticipated spring premieres. With its performance at the television precursor awards, Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently Gold Derby’s frontrunner for Best Limited Series, but the odds are consistently shifting with the release of newer shows, one of the standouts being fellow Netflix entry “Beef,” which could be poised for an upset.
As of this writing, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, the Ryan Murphy anthology series still holds strong at the top with 39/10 odds, having done well with nominations at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild of America Awards. “Monster’s” key components are its actors, with Evan Peters winning the lead Globe and Niecy Nash-Betts triumphing at the Critics Choice Awards in the supporting category, and both nabbed SAG Award nominations.

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.
