The Assassin's Creed franchise is getting a redo in live-action, and Netflix has moved quickly to assemble a team of veteran television writers for their upcoming streaming series adaptation. The best-selling action adventure franchise famously got a feature film released in theaters in 2016 starring Michael Fassbender, but it proved to be another misstep in the video game movie genre. The streamer looks to rewrite history with their new live-action series, which will be spearheaded by a Westworld alum.
Nexus Point News (via the Writer's Guild of America) reports that Roberto Patino, an executive producer for Westworld and the showrunner for HBO's Dmz, will act as executive producer and co-showrunner for Netflix's Assassin's Creed alongside David Wiener (Halo). Joining them is an impressive list of producers and writers, as seen below. As of this writing, it is unclear what stage of development the project is in. However, the upcoming series is...

The 2nd Season of Dexter: Original Sin is in the works and already shaping up to be an emotional deep-dive into young Dexter Morgan’s transition into a vigilante serial killer. But one obtrusive narrative twist is not sitting right with me. The complete crossing out of Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a neuropsychiatrist who played a significant role in the original Dexter series, was not just unexpected, but absolutely unnecessary.
In Dexter Season 8, we were introduced to Vogel, who was revealed to be a secret architect of the infamous “code”, a system that controlled Dexter’s moral conduct, steering his homicidal urges towards a path of vigilante service. Her ties to Dexter’s early years were classified as critical elements of the show. So why would Original Sin leave such a pivotal character out?

Back in 2005, Randy Orton was a 24-year-old hotshot in the WWE and prepared to wrestle The Undertaker at WrestleMania 21. Orton was “The Legend Killer” and was given the opportunity to challenge The Undertaker’s legendary undefeated streak, which was a huge deal for any wrestler. So what did Orton regret most about that time?
He blew off all of the match rehearsals and let down a legend and learned a lesson about growing up. Years later, on WWE Untold and Broken Skull Sessions, Orton explained how being an arrogant kid almost cost him and contributed to why professionalism matters in WWE’s challenging world.
Randy Orton’s rookie mistake with The Undertaker
Can you imagine it’s April 2, 2005? The day before WrestleMania 21, a run-through just for Randy Orton‘s huge match. All the heavyweights are there, like The Undertaker, Orton’s dad Bob Orton, producers John Laurinaitis and Ricky Steamboat,...

The clock is ticking—it’s the eleventh hour. The Délégué général Thierry Frémaux is deep in the final throes of curating this year’s Competition lineup and he is currently weighing in on the last few masterstrokes for the Class of ’25. Rushed in at the wire, a handful of freshly picture-locked films are being evaluated and with only two or three slots left for the Palme d’Or comp, there are are maybe a dozen of antsy filmmakers hoping they get the invite. We might hear of the new titles tomorrow or perhaps early next week and we can only assume that Jim Jarmusch and Arnaud Desplechin might still options on the bingo card but were of the opinion that they were kept on ice incase something more noteworthy trickled in.…...

Florence Pugh has confirmed that she is returning as Princess Irulan Corrino for Dune: Part Three, aka Dune Messiah, which is set to begin filming this summer. Her character becomes a central figure in the second book of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi series, suggesting a more prominent part and extended screen time for her in the forthcoming third movie from director Denis Villeneuve. "I hope we see more of her," Pugh told Harper's Bazaar, keeping coy about the possibility of her expanded role, adding, "I want more cool outfits!"
Princess Irulan is the eldest daughter of the duplicitous 81st Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, portrayed by Christopher Walken in Dune: Part Two, and Anirul, a Bene Gesserit of Hidden Rank, though this is only briefly visited on screen. Pugh's character evolves from a passive observer to an active participant in the unfolding drama when she agrees to marry Paul Atreides...

Cate Blanchett has said she is seriously considering stepping away from acting, citing other personal interests and a long-standing discomfort with public attention. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the two-time Academy Award winner stated that her family often dismisses her comments about retiring, but she remains firm in her intent.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “There are a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Blanchett is currently featured in BBC Radio 4’s upcoming drama The Fever. The interview also touched on her ongoing discomfort with public appearances and celebrity culture. Cate Blanchett is surprising fans by revealing in an upcoming issue of Radio Times (via The Standard) that she is not going to be an actor forever. That’s not to say retirement is imminent for the two-time Oscar winner (“The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine”), but there will come a time when Blanchett leaves the profession behind.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said. “[There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.”
Blanchett most recently starred opposite Michael Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed spy drama “Black Bag,” which has earned $21 million at the domestic box office. She told the publication that she’s “spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable” in the public eye as a famous actor.

When Rebecca Ferguson Was Intimidated By This Dune Co-Star & It Wasn’t Timothee Chalamet Or Zendaya!

Which Dune Star Left Rebecca Ferguson Intimidated? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Timothée Chalamet didn’t rattle Rebecca Ferguson. Zendaya didn’t shake her up either. Giant sandworms? Please. But one Dune co-star had her spiraling with nerves right before filming even started. And no, it wasn’t because of a scene partner her age. It was the legendary Charlotte Rampling.
Ferguson played Lady Jessica in Dune (2021), and her first scene on day one of filming was the iconic Gom Jabbar moment. No pressure, right? Well, it just so happened that the woman across from her was Rampling, playing the powerful and commanding Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam. That combo of scene + star? Cue the anxiety.
“I was very nervous,” Rebecca Ferguson told The Cut. “I was having heart palpitations knowing she was going to walk in.” To be fair, Ferguson wasn’t alone in her fear. Director Denis Villeneuve and even Chalamet were just as intimidated.

Whenever your epic sci-fi franchise has a chance to add yet another talented actor to an already-packed ensemble, you simply have to do it. Reports broke in recent days that "Dune 3" director Denis Villeneuve is looking to Robert Pattinson to help fill out the ranks of the upcoming threequel. Naturally, the idea of "The Batman" star joining forces with the likes of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, Zendaya's Chani, Florence Pugh's Princess Irulan, and many more A-listers is already thrilling enough. But, after recently leading Bong Joon Ho's similarly space-set film "Mickey 17," Pattinson's next exciting career move has every "Dune" fan watching closely.
As with every other significant casting throughout both movies so far, the spice-consuming masses simply need to know: Which new character from author Frank Herbert's novel might Pattinson be playing? The third movie will be adapted from the (somewhat) divisive novel "Dune: Messiah,...

Denis Villeneuve has his sights set on another A-lister to join the starry ensemble cast of “Dune: Messiah”: Robert Pattinson.
As Villeneuve puts the finishing touches on the script for the next “Dune” installment ahead of a summer shoot, sources tell Variety that there’s interest in having Pattinson join the project, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. However, no formal offer has been presented, and it is unknown who he would play. Legendary had no comment.
Pattinson recently co-starred with Zendaya in the A24 film “The Drama,” and is currently filming Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey.” He’s also the star of Warner Bros.’s “The Batman,” with a sequel set to open in theaters in 2027. Pattinson is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, Curtis Brown Group and attorney Robert Offer.
Last year, Legendary confirmed that development on “Dune 3” was underway following the blockbuster success of “Dune: Part 2.

But the famed director isn't finished with Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi universe just yet. He is already developing his highly-anticipated film-trilogy finale: Dune: Messiah.
Despite there being six books in the main series, Villeneuve doesn't intend to make any more Dune movies beyond this upcoming threequel. Is François Ozon the most talented French film-maker currently working? That’s a big ask, in a very crowded field, but Ozon has got the back catalogue to back it up. From his 1998 feature debut Sitcom (notwithstanding 1997’s 52-minute See the Sea), early films such as Fassbinder adaptation Water Drops on Burning Rocks and star-stuffed crime musical 8 Women, on to more recent works including Frantz and Summer of 85, Ozon has ranged widely across styles and genres, offering something new and original wherever he’s gone. He’s even done an English-language period drama, Angel, starring Romola Garai.

Denis Villeneuve recently revealed that he does not intend on helming a different film first, and his adaptation of Dune: Messiah (though the movie will likely end up being titled Dune: Part 3) will be his next project. Production is expected to get underway later this year, and we now have word on the return of a certain character from the first movie.
Though this won't come as a surprise to anyone who has read Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi saga, here's your Spoiler warning just in case.
Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho was killed off towards the end of Dune: Part One, but Jeff Sneider has now confirmed that the Aquaman star will reprise the role for the third film.

In an exciting update for ‘Dune‘ fans, Jeff Sneider of The Hot Mic reports that Jason Momoa is set to return as Duncan Idaho in the highly anticipated sequel ‘Dune: Messiah.’
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film will continue the saga where Duncan Idaho is resurrected as a ghola—a clone created from genetic material, aligning with Frank Herbert’s original storyline.
Fans of the book will already be familiar with Duncan Idaho’s unique journey in ‘Dune: Messiah,’ but for those new to the story, we’ll avoid revealing too much about how his return unfolds. Suffice it to say, his resurrection plays a crucial role in the intricate political and philosophical conflicts that define this chapter of the saga.
The plot of ‘Dune: Messiah’ thickens as Timothee Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, finds himself overwhelmed by the religious zeal and ongoing jihad he’s tied to.

Jurassic World Rebirth Director Gareth Edwards Rumored To Be On WB's Radar To Helm Fourth Dune Movie

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop after three!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie, and they might be looking at Gareth Edwards to take the helm.
The scooper believes that there's interest in Edwards - who also has Jurassic World Rebirth coming out later this year - stepping in to direct, but isn't sure if he's actually in talks.
The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune,...

Though no decision has been made, “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is weighing a Cannes Film Festival bow, which could see Tom Cruise injecting some serious star power into the event. Paramount, which declined to comment for this article, will be releasing the movie in theaters on May 21, which falls during the second week of the festival. The film is intended to be Cruise’s last outing as the Imf spy.
Paramount has a rich history with the festival, and so does Cruise, whose last trip to Cannes — for “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022 — was a triumph. The movie went on to gross $1.45 billion at the worldwide box office and even garnered six Oscar nominations, winning a statuette for best sound.

You’ll almost certainly know Maria de Medeiros as the choppy-bobbed girlfriend, Fabienne, of Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction (1994). But what you might not know is what she’s been up to since — unless you’re a longtime European art house expert, in which case, maybe you do.
The Portuguese actress, now 59, returns to the Berlin Film Festival this year with Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s Italian murder mystery (a genre referred to as giallo), Reflection in a Dead Diamond. The movie follows a retired spy — played by spaghetti Western icon Fabio Testi — residing in a luxurious hotel on the French Riviera. He becomes fascinated by his new neighbor, who rekindles memories of the Riviera’s vibrant days in the 1960s. But when his neighbor vanishes without a trace, Testi’s character is forced to confront his past demons.

Score one for Patrick Gibson as a younger Dexter. They also wanted to dive deeper into the character of Harry, played by James Remar in flashbacks in the original and Christian Slater in this show. There was even icing on top, including a new cast playing beloved characters from the original and greater context relating to characters like Brian Moser (Christian Camargo/Roby Attal), Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter/Molly Brown), and especially Harry. Update: Not having read Josh Brolin’s recently published memoir, I am unsure how much of a poker player the No Country for Old Men actor is. However, after raising the Academy with the threat that he would retire from acting if Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director for Dune: Part Two, the actor may have had his bluff called, as the filmmaker was not called during this morning’s nomination announcement for the 97th Academy Awards.
With it time to show his hand, Josh Brolin has not yet revealed if he was being hyperbolic or if his time as Gurney Halleck has ended. Brolin has had a storied career on the big screen and may not be quite ready to throw in the towel yet, but we will have to see if he makes any comments on his social media accounts in the coming days.

Quick Links But Let's Be Honest: Did Villeneuve Deserve the Best Director Nomination? Villeneuve Joins a List of Unbelievable Oscar Snubs
It has happened. What I, star Josh Brolin, and millions of other sci-fi fans thought to be a joke has become true: The Academy has decided that Denis Villeneuve does not even deserve to get a nomination for his directorial effort in the 2024 science fiction epic Dune: Part Two. The Academy Award nominations were recently announced, and as expected, there were a few surprises. No Best Original Score for Challengers, Sebastian Stan was nominated for The Apprentice and not for A Different Man, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste was left out for Hard Truths. The 97th Academy Awards are continuing a painful trend for sci-fi fans, as Denis Villeneuve has been snubbed for Best Director once again. Dune: Part Two was expected to be one of the hot favorites at this year's Oscars, with the entire fan base backing Villeneuve's monumental sequel, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Austin Butler. The nominees shortlist was announced just moments ago, and Villeneuve has been left higher and drier than the desert of Arrakis, and it's not the first time.

Denis Villeneuve's take on Frank Herbert's Dune series has been a major success so far. The second installment, 2024's Dune: Part Two, saw the success of 2021's Dune: Part One and raised it even higher, and the Academy recognized the film's efforts.
Dune: Part Two was bigger and better than the first installment, and out-grossed the first film. It was the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024, kicking off the year with the biggest numbers by the time of its premiere in March. The sci-fi film was officially recognized at the 97th Academy Awards by the Academy with several nominations, including one for Best Picture, but it didn't get the nomination Josh Brolin wanted.

As Netflix enters the month of February, a slew of films will be leaving the platform. Many of them are must-watch movies, which means subscribers will definitely want to check them out before it’s too late. While some will be exiting the streaming service mid-month, many will no longer be available as soon as February arrives. That being said, viewers shouldn’t waste any time adding them to their watchlist.
With a variety of movies leaving the platform, no matter what viewers are in the mood for, they’re bound to find at least one film worth watching before its departure. However, subscribers shouldn’t feel too overwhelmed, seeing as there’s still plenty of time to check out what Netflix will have for at least the next few weeks. Nonetheless, if anything below appeals to you, be sure to check it out before it disappears.

As studios, production houses, and agents return from the holidays and burn off the last energy of this ceaseless, shameless awards season, numerous projects are finding lifeblood. Case in point: at Wednesday’s New York Film Critics Circle dinner I had a brief exchange with Annie Baker, who was present to accept their Best First Film honor and casually mentioned a new project that’s set up at A24, who’d shepherded Janet Planet to such success. She was tight-lipped on further details (like I could help asking), but a couple inquiries confirmed casting is in motion; likely shooting commences before long.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6 & Dexter season 8.Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) officially became a serial killer in Dexter: Original Sin episode 6, but it also changed details about his third kill that Dexter season 8 had already established. Dexter's kill count is quickly growing as Original Sin progresses. In Original Sin episode 6, Dexter killed Levi Reed (Jeff Daniel Phillips), which marked his third kill. Since the FBI defines serial killers as murderers who have killed three or more people in separate events, Levi Reed's death made Dexter an official serial killer. Though it was a special moment for Dexter, there was a problem: it retroactively changed the original series.

The following article contains discussions of mental health conditions, violence, and suicide.
While the entertainment industry is notorious for misrepresenting many illnesses, conditions, and disorders, there are many movie characters who accurately portray mental health. Cinema has had a dubious history of portraying mental health in an authentic or even sensitive light. The perceived dramatic nature of a mental illness has notoriously meant it's too often conveyed as a means to broadcast sentimentality or sensationalism. Additionally, "madness" has been used by horror films as a justification for all kinds of unspeakable acts. However, Hollywood also occasionally gets it right, and there are plenty of movie characters with mental disorders that aren't portrayed problematically.
The exploration of mental illness and mental health disorders in movies has improved dramatically over the last few decades, with an emphasis on authenticity and care towards humanization. Depictions that are seen as genuine across myriad genres,...

The line-up features fresh additions An Affair by Arnaud Desplechin and Prime Rush by Carlos Abascal Peiró as well as half a dozen pictures that we expect to see at Cannes or Venice later this year.
An Affair marks a new chapter for Desplechin after achieving closure in 2024 with his long-running character of Paul Dédalus through Cannes-selected drama Filmlovers!, which hits French cinemas for Les Films du Losange next week.
New movie An Affair sees Desplechin collaborate with rising French stars François Civil (Beating Hearts) and Nadia Tereszkiewicz (The Crime is Mine) for the first time, in a cast also featuring Charlotte Rampling and Hippolyte Girardot.

We haven't even got to the official ceremony, but the 2025 Oscars are already causing controversy. There has been an ongoing battle between The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Dune: Part Two over Hans Zimmer's phenomenal score for the 2024 sequel. According to The Academy, the score is ineligible for submission in the Best Original Score category, something which Zimmer himself disagrees with, though he is ultimately more focused on the quality of the score and movie than its awards potential. However, like Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) announcing himself as the Lisan al Gaib, Dune: Part Two's director, Denis Villeneuve, has come to the rescue, defending Zimmer's score, and questioning The Academy's decision.
During an interview with SlashFilm, Denis Villeneuve called out The Academy for excluding Zimmer's score. "I am absolutely against the decision of the Academy to exclude Hans, frankly, because I feel like his score is...

New films from Paul Thomas Anderson and Kelly Reichardt with stars including George Clooney, Michaela Coel and Cate Blanchett will premiere this year
Jim Jarmusch prefers to work at an unhurried pace, but perhaps it’s no coincidence that his longest inter-picture hiatus has followed the most tepidly reviewed release of his career. Soon, it will have been six years since his low-key zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die was met with a resounding shrug at Cannes, and it would seem that the coolest cucumber in American independent cinema will respond by paring down to basics. No more fun and games with genre, just a “very subtle”, “very quiet”, “funny”, and “sad” family affair gathering Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Adam Driver, Tom Waits and a pink-haired Vicky Krieps around the dinner table. But if it’s going to be anything like his last film dealing with parents and children – the hangdog,...

Director Denis Villeneuve filmed many of Dune: Part Two's Arrakis sequences in harsh environments. Zendaya said wearing a Fremen stillsuit costume in the desert heat didn't help.
Zendaya shared some of her co-stars' experiences while filming Dune: Part Two on outdoor sets. The Arrakis desert scenes were shot on location in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, leaving the cast and crew at the mercy of the elements. She said it was particularly grueling for actors wearing stillsuits costumes, designed after the armor the Fremen wore to survive harsh environments. Speaking with W Magazine, Zendaya said her full-body suit was so troublesome to wear and remove that she didn't drink water to avoid bathroom breaks. She confessed that was a huge mistake.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin episode 4 and Dexter season 8.The prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has gone to great lengths to fit in with most of Dexter's established canon, except for Dexter season 8. Almost everything in Dexter: Original Sin is designed to add to the original show's story rather than detract from it. Even the cast of Original Sin is mostly composed of returning characters, and even Michael C. Hall has returned as the voice of Dexter's inner monologue. That doesn't mean the prequel show hasn't retconned anything, however - it's already changed the ending of Dexter: New Blood - and it seems to be changing Dexter season 8 as well.
In Dexter season 8, Dexter met Dr. Evelyn Vogel (Charlotte Rampling). Dr. Vogel was a psychologist who specialized in psychopaths, and she indirectly treated Dexter when he was a child. Dexter revealed that...
