Tribeca X’s 2025 lineup: Bryan Cranston, Paris Hilton, and a year-round expansion
Image
Tribeca X was originally a one-day affair. When it launched in 2016 as part of New York City’s iconic Tribeca Festival, it was a single-day slate of programming for the creative advertising industry, capped by an awards show recognizing best-in-class, storytelling-driven marketing. Then, in 2024, it doubled in size, expanding to two days of live programming.

For 2025, it’s jumping into its biggest expansion yet. Its core event will still welcome attendees June 9-10 at Spring Studios in New York City, bringing together “top talent from Hollywood, advertising, and business for two days of high-impact conversations and networking at the intersection of creativity, commerce, and culture,” it says.

But on top of that core event, it now plans to offer year-round programming during activations at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Emmys, Art Basel Miami Beach, and more.

“Tribeca X is scaling to meet the moment. Our year-round expansion positions Tribeca...

The event will also expand to three days of programming, with projects including U.S. independent films, Portuguese films, series, podcasts, and what has been described as music showcases.

How Dito Montiel’s Road to ‘Riff Raff’ Began With Robert Downey Jr. Playing Dito Montiel
Image
Sept. 29, 2006 forever changed Dito Montiel and Robert Downey Jr.’s lives.

It was not only the day that Downey was officially cast as Tony Stark in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, but it was also the theatrical release date of Montiel’s debut indie drama A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, starring Downey as a semi-autobiographical version of Montiel. The day cemented Downey’s return to industry prominence after a series of highly publicized personal struggles, and the random fall Friday had just as much meaning for Montiel after many of his own storybook ups and agonizing downs.

As a native of Queens in New York City, Montiel was something of a renaissance man before becoming a filmmaker. In the ’80s, he was a mainstay in NYC’s hardcore punk scene as the teenage frontman of Major Conflict. In 1989, his new band, Gutterboy, signed a then-record $1 million deal with Geffen Records.

Inside Clive Davis’ Milestone Pre-Grammys Event With Legends (Joni Mitchell), Chart-Toppers (Shaboozey) and A-Listers (Jennifer Lopez)
Image
Clive Davis once again filled the Beverly Hilton’s international ballroom to the brim with music industry insiders as he presented his pre-Grammy celebration and concert. As always, Saturday night’s show featured a unique mix at the microphone of legends (Joni Mitchell, Barry Manilow), rising stars (Shaboozey, Benson Boone and Teddy Swims) and rock royalty (members of Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica).

But this year’s starry event had a new moniker on the program, billed as an “event” rather than a “gala,” due to the catastrophic Los Angeles blazes that ripped through the city last month. While the wildfires forced a pivot — the typically glamorous affair got scaled back a bit by nixing the red carpet and its crush of press and photographers — and introduced a focus on fundraising via MusiCares, music, as always, remained the start of the show. Saturday night delivered a parade...

Kevin Spacey, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, and Kevin Pollak in The Usual Suspects (1995)
To celebrate the Limited Edition 4K Uhd release of The Usual Suspects, we are giving away a 4K Uhd to a lucky winner!

The Usual Suspects won two Academy Awards and is still regarded as one of the greatest crime films ever made.

After a brutal massacre on a cargo ship off the coast of Los Angeles leaves 27 men dead, Special Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) interrogates one of the only two survivors, small-time con artist Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey). During the interview, Kint tells Kujan of how he was recruited by the fearsome crime lord Keyser Söze to commit a series of daring heists with four other crooked misfits: Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), Mike McManus (Stephen Baldwin), Fred Fenster (Benicio del Toro) and Todd Hockey (Kevin Pollak). But as Kint’s account of the events leading up to the massacre becomes more convoluted, Kujan becomes increasingly sceptical and determined...

This 31-Year-Old Crime Drama Is One of the Best Coming-of-Age Films of All Time
Image
The backstory of A Bronx Tale is a testament to the power of storytelling and is just as compelling and inspiring as the film itself. In 1990, Robert De Niro saw a Broadway show called A Bronx Tale, starring Chazz Palminteri. Chazz, who grew up in the Bronx, had written this stage play, inspired by his own childhood. Palminteri played 18 roles in this one-man show. De Niro must have seen something unique in this show because he offered a partnership to the struggling actor to work on a screenplay version of the play.

De Niro even decided to make this project his directing debut. The result is an unusual coming-of-age story with an Italian mob backdrop. Opposite to most mobster movies, this story is not centered around hitmen and gruesome deaths but around the question: How does your environment shape your worldview? The film premiered in 1993 and received praise from critics,...

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Says Farewell to Many Makeup Looks Through Many Endings
Image
Make-up design doesn’t always mean prosthetics or extremes — that’s why the Emmy Awards smartly single out contemporary make-up design as its own category. But too often, those more immediately arresting designs are the ones that get all the attention. Not anymore. Join IndieWire in celebrating the make-up artists creating subtle, character-specific work for contemporary characters with our series, “Making Up Is Hard to Do.”

Look, sometimes subtlety is for the weak.

“What We Do in the Shadows” has always been the rare delight of a comedy set in a contemporary setting that still gets to play with a cornucopia of mixed-up period details and fantastic monsters. It is as big and broad as it can be, in part because the comedy lives in its contrast between ordinary Staten Islanders and the Vampire Residence that has so fascinated us, and also, apparently, the Maysles brothers.

For six seasons, the...

Sylvester Stallone's Comedy 'Oscar' Bombed but Siskel & Ebert Loved It
Image
With future seasons of Sylvester Stallone's popular crime drama Tulsa King confirmed, a show in which he plays the head of a mafia family, we can't help but be reminded of one of the actor's earlier portrayals of a gangster. By 1991, Sylvester Stallone had already starred in five Rocky movies and three Rambo flicks, cementing himself as a bona fide action star who seemed most at home on screen when he was hitting something — or rather, someone. This is part of the reason why it was so shocking when his next project was as the lead role in Oscar, a comedy from one of the great filmmakers of the genre, director John Landis.

Tom Cruise Delivered One of His Best Performances in 'The Color of Money'
Image
Quick Links 'The Color of Money' Is a Sports Movie About Growing Up Tom Cruise Should Have Been Honored

Nine ball — one of the numerous variations of pool, the cue sport. The striking game (widely known for its hustling and gambling culture) started in the United States of America sometime in the 1920s and has been going strong ever since. Like any other competitive game, Hollywood has managed to grab hold and transform it into a storytelling vehicle for some big-screen productions.

This is no criticism, though, as there are some sorely underrated movies revolving around cue sports in general, such as 1980's The Baltimore Bullet (featuring the legendary James Coburn), 2002’s Poolhall Junkies (starring Chazz Palminteri), and The Rack Pack (a 2016 British TV film about snooker). Standing above all — in what seems to be a largely untapped subgenre — is a 1986 movie that not only subtly analyzes the...

13 Iconic Cinematic References in Better Call Saul
Image
In Better Call Saul, Kim Wexler and Jimmy McGill were constantly watching classic films. Their movie love was demonstrated by Blockbuster browsing, quoting lines from films, and references to characters in their favorite films. In addition to this, there are numerous references to cinema throughout the show. From television to films, the show does a masterful job of referencing iconic movies and television shows.

While some of the references in Better Call Saul are direct, others are more of an homage, paying tribute to some of the best pieces of cinema. The creators, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, never shied away from either baking in a favorite scene, shot, or line from other great works. Just like the main characters in Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould love cinema and did their best to demonstrate that throughout the show's run.

The Usual Suspects Ending, Explained
Image
The Usual Suspects ending has gone down as one of the greatest twists in movie history and has added to the crime thriller's lasting legacy. The movie follows a group of criminals who work together on particular jobs, such as jewel heists and robberies, but their lives are put in grave danger when they're hired by the mysterious Keyser Sze. The job is a drugs raid on a docked ship, and Kobayashi, who is Sze's lawyer, blackmails the suspects into working the job based on all the times they've stolen from Sze.

The story is told from the perspective of Roger "Verbal" Kint (Kevin Spacey), one of the suspects and the only surviving member following the botched raid. He is being interrogated by U.S. Customs Agent Dave Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) in an office at a police station. The non-linear narrative of The Usual Suspects cuts between the intense interrogation...

William Friedkin's Panned Crime Thriller Jade Deserves More Recognition
Image
Known to many for his role as Horatio Caine on Cis: Miami from 2002 to 2012, David Caruso first gained notoriety in the police procedural drama NYPD Blue. The actor chose to depart from the latter of these products in 1994 to pursue a career in film. During the brief erotic thriller craze brought about by the success of Paul Verhoeven's Basic Instinct, Caruso took a role in Jade. A thriller, released in 1995 and directed by William Friedkin, also featured a stacked cast that included Linda Fiorentino, Chazz Palminteri, Michael Bien, and Richard Crenna.

To say Jade was not well received by critics and audiences would be an understatement. Jade bombed at the box office and was subject to scathing reviews from many critics. Like other erotic thrillers from the time period, such as Sliver, Body of Evidence, and Color of Night, the overall reception was mostly negative, despite these films all...

How Robert De Niro's 1993 Acclaimed Crime Movie Accurately Depicts Bar Fights Explained By Former Gang Member: "Brawls Do Happen"
Image
A Bronx Tale accurately portrays bar brawls, earning a 7 out of 10 score from a former Hells Angels member. Bar fights can break out if an establishment refuses to serve a club member due to the patches on their jacket. A Bronx Tale marks Robert De Niro's directorial debut and earned glowing reviews from critics, but it was a commercial disappointment.

A former Hells Angels gang member explains how A Bronx Tale accurately depicts bar brawls. Directed by and starring De Niro and released in 1993, A Bronx Tale chronicles how a young boy becomes torn between his hard-working father and the charismatic crime boss that runs their neighborhood. The film, which also stars Chazz Palminteri and Lillo Brancato, features some moments of intense violence, including a bar brawl involving a biker gang.

One of Robert De Niros Greatest Gangster Films Is Also His Most Personal
Image
After years of being Martin Scorsese's closest on-screen collaborator, Robert De Niro decided to make a Martin Scorsese film of his own. Frequently lauded as the greatest actor of his generation, De Niro defined an era of filmmaking with his uncanny ability to immerse himself in roles and portray the underbelly of humanity with his performances in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. The actor's 1993 directorial debut, A Bronx Tale, apes the formal and thematic traits of Scorsese's celebrated gangster films, notably Mean Streets and Goodfellas. While it's difficult not to draw parallels between the two, De Niro's film was no pure imitation, but rather, an autobiographical source, as the film was based on the childhood experiences of De Niro's co-star Chazz Palminteri. Between its actor-director, De Niro, and his co-star, Palminteri, A Bronx Tale tells a familiar crime saga filled with personal expression and touching nostalgia.

Norby Walters Dies: ‘Night Of 100 Stars’ Oscar Party Impresario, Music Agent & Hollywood Poker Game Host Was 91
Image
Norby Walters, the onetime music agent who ran the annual “Night of 100 Stars” Oscar party for years and hosted an iconic low-stakes poker party for actors, died December 12. He was 91. His son, Walters Media Group founder and former Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, confirmed the news but did not provide details.

Born Norbert Meyer, in 1952 Walters started booking jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz into his father’s bar.

Walters and his brother, Walter took over a place from their father and dubbed it Norby & Walter’s Bel Air, but its sign had no ampersand — which led to the name Walters would use during his career. He later took over a failing nightclub located next to the world-famous Copacabana, dubbed it Norby Walters’s Supper Club, and attracted a who’s who of boldfaced New York City names.

For decades, Disney CEO Bob Iger has been a revered media titan, beloved by both employees and Wall Street — a rare feat and tricky balancing act.

That’s what made it so surprising to the creative community when the usually friendly and disciplined Iger, fresh off his private jet at Sun Valley, chose a setting known as “summer camp for billionaires” to castigate writers and actors for their “very disturbing” strike and economic expectations that are “just not realistic,” adding that Hollywood has been “a great business for all of these people.” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher joined voices across entertainment in calling Iger’s comments “tone deaf” and, well, rich for someone who reportedly makes more than 500 times the median salary of Disney employees.

Samuel L. Jackson Says ‘A Time to Kill’ Cut Scenes Robbed Him of ‘Getting an Oscar’: ‘Really, Motherf—ers? You Just Took That S— From Me?’
Image
Samuel L. Jackson told The Times last year that he deserved to win the Oscar for best supporting actor over Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”) at the 1995 Academy Awards. In a new interview with Vulture, the actor said he was robbed of a second chance to win an Oscar just a couple years later with Joel Schumacher’s 1996 legal drama “A Time to Kill,” co-starring Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. The John Grisham adaptation starred Jackson as a man on trial in Mississippi for killing the two men who raped his daughter.

“In ‘A Time to Kill,’ when I kill those guys, I kill them because my daughter needs to know that those guys are not on the planet anymore and they will never hurt her again — that I will do anything to protect her,” Jackson said. “That’s how I played that character throughout. And there were specific things we shot,...

Robert De Niro says A Bronx Tale failure stalled directing opportunities
Image
With 1993’s A Bronx Tale celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, two things are for sure. One, not every beloved movie does well at the box office. Two, if she doesn’t lean over and lift the car lock, dump her. But Robert De Niro has more to say on the former, as A Bronx Tale almost cost him his future as a director.

Speaking at the Tribeca Festival – which Robert De Niro co-founded as the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to bring prosperity back to New York after 9/11 – the actor/director recalled A Bronx Tale peaking at #7 and only grossing around $17 million at the box office. “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.” He added, “I never got asked to do movies after that,” although, more accurately,...

Robert De Niro, Chazz Palminteri Take The Stage At ‘A Bronx Tale’ 30th Reunion – Tribeca Festival
Image
A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s 1993 directorial debut, starred as the Tribeca Festival’s closing gala with the famed actor acknowledging that he never got asked to direct again following the film’s inauspicious box office debut.

“I was lucky to be able to make the movie. I made it the way I wanted to make it. I didn’t compromise at all. And I took longer to do [it] than was scheduled. And I had a lot of pressure…So I never got asked to do movies after that. That’s okay,” he said, sitting down with Chazz Palminteri in an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick after a screening of the newly remastered film.

Remick reminded him he’d also directed The Good Shepherd. “I did The Good Shepherd. But that was another uphill battle,” De Niro said.

Image
Robert De Niro worked the crowd at the Beacon Theater during the Tribeca Festival closing gala on Saturday evening, which served as a 30th anniversary celebration of his directorial debut, “A Bronx Tale.”

When asked about the film’s mild box office — earning about $17 million on a $21 million production budget — the director said, “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.”

De Niro also admitted that “I never got asked to do movies after that,” and it was an effort to get his next directorial effort, 2006’s “The Good Shepherd,” made.

“That was another uphill battle,” he said.

Following a screening of the film, De Niro, who also starred in and produced the film, discussed the project with writer and co-star Chazz Palminteri in a conversation moderated by The New Yorker’s David Remnick.

De Niro also addressed whether he would be interested in starring in Scorsese’s next film after the director...

The Best Movies Like Menace II Society
