Doc Holliday is one of the most interesting men in the history of the Western genre. A dentist-turned-gambler-turned-gunfighter, his real-life story has been fictionalized through countless portrayals in film and TV. Throughout the years, Doc has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways, ranging from the cold and calculating to the charming and unpredictable.

Among the many actors who have taken on the role, Val Kilmer and Adam West stand out for their takes on the character, even though they played him decades apart. Kilmer’s portrayal in Tombstone remains one of the most iconic, playing Doc as a brilliant and witty man battling tuberculosis. West, on the other hand, took on the role in the late 1950s and early 1960s in a series of TV Westerns, bringing a more classic version of the gunslinger. The 90s Western Tombstone sees storied lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) attempt to live a civilian life after moving to Tombstone, Arizona, with his extended family. Despite the presence of a criminal gang known as the "Cowboys," Wyatt initially prospers in the frontier town as a card dealer at a saloon. Unfortunately, his brother Virgil (Sam Elliott) becomes the local sheriff and Wyatt is drawn into a bloody war with the Cowboys.

Tombstone skillfully blends action, humor, and romance in its exploration of Wyatt Earp's time in Arizona. While there are plenty of light and heartwarming moments, the film doesn't shy away from the bloody and depressing parts of the story. In fact, its unwavering examination of these dark moments are some of its rawest and most emotional scenes.

The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.

The film was based on Martin Cruz Smith's international bestseller and was unique in its day because it centered on subterfuge within the Soviet law enforcement system and was set primarily in Moscow. Director Michael Apted had hoped to be the first major Hollywood studio production to shoot within the Soviet Union but unsurprisingly he was turned down due to the fact that the story dealt with systemic corruption throughout every layer of the government. Apted settled for the next best thing, shooting in Finland and Sweden, both of which make convincing substitutes for the Ussr. Scream Factory has announced that Virus (1999), starring Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, Scream Queens), William Baldwin, and Donald Sutherland (Hunger Games franchise), will make its Blu-ray debut in North America on May 2nd.

The Virus Blu-ray special features have yet to be announced, but stay tuned to Daily Dead, as we will inform our readers when that news becomes available, and check out the official announcement and cover art below.

Few genres have been as seminal a part of American and world cinema as the Western. Before the talkies, good guys in white punched and shot bad guys in black. While the genre has faded in recent years, several Western gems have stepped to the forefront. In 1993, Tombstone was such a gem.

Texas Frightmare Weekend held a reunion for the movie with Austin actress Dana Wheeler-Nicholson as well as Michael Biehn, Joanna Pacula, Michael Rooker and Buck Taylor. The men in the cast chatted about working with gunfight experts and living with their weapons for weeks to get the feel for it. The women were proud of their authentic costumes, with this drive for authenticity made more important to them when they learned of the competing film Wyatt Earp being shot at the same time. Tombstone was the underdog going up against the Kevin Costner Western.

Pen Densham is the director behind The Kiss starring exotic beauty Joanna Pacula, ever so wholesome teen superstar Meredith Salenger, the legendary Jan Rubes and feature directing superstar Shawn Levy (Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum, and Date Night to name a few). The Kiss deals with the title smooch being passed down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, for poor little Meredith Salenger she is next in line to receive this deadly kiss from her aunt, Joanna Pacula. Initially a flop when it first came out, The Kiss has found an ever growing following over the past few years due to the film being released at the height of the DVD craze. We had the chance to ask Pen Densham a few questions about The Kiss. Here is what he had to say.

You can bring home both a 1993 Western and a 1998 apocalyptic disaster movie home in high definition on the same day this April. Tombstone and Armageddon will both be released on Blu-ray on April 27. After success cleaning up Dodge City, Wyatt Earp moves to Tombstone, Arizona, and wishes to get rich in obscurity. He meets his brothers there, as well as his old friend Doc Holliday.

Two decades after its first wan movie adaptation (starring Tom Berenger), Stephen Vizinczey's novel "In Praise of Older Women" has been transformed into another movie that doesn't quite work. Although the setting has been changed from World War II-era Hungary to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, this version is equally unsuccessful in its depiction of a teenager's erotic coming of age.

The Spanish feature, which received its U.S. premiere at the 15th Miami Film Festival, has some names in its cast (Faye Dunaway, Joanna Pacula) and can certainly exploit its sexual content, but theatrical prospects are limited.

"Women" chronicles the amorous adventures of 15-year-old Andres, who is abandoned by his mother. He falls in with a group of anti-fascist rebels near the front, where he has his first romantic experience with a beautiful but slightly seedy countess (Dunaway) who is not above providing sexual favors to assure safe passage for her and her husband.

Andres is then sent to stay at his sergeant's house in Barcelona, where he quickly falls under the spell of the sergeant's beautiful daughter Julia (Ingrid Rubio). Unfortunately, Julia's not-so-understanding mother catches the two in the act and kicks Andres out. Making his living as a black marketeer, Andres enjoys a dissolute but dissatisfying lifestyle until the war ends, when he reunites with his mother, now married to a prominent fascist. His next experience comes with a married neighbor, Marta (Pacula), who starts out educating Andres about books but continues with lessons of a far different kind.

The political aspects of the film are interesting but far from compelling, and screenwriter Rafael Azcona and director Manuel Lombardero fail to render Andres' romantic adventures with sufficient poignance or depth. Even worse, most of the story is not particularly erotic.

The film drifts from one listless episode to another, and many of the characterizations are too broadly drawn to be credible, but not broad enough to be truly entertaining. It does have an evocative re-creation of the period and gorgeous cinematography that makes ordinary objects glimmer with passion. But as with the story and characterizations, all the pleasure lies on the surface.
