Val Kilmer and Adam West Played 1 of the Western Genre's Greatest Icons 34 Years Apart
Image
Doc Holliday is one of the most interesting men in the history of the Western genre. A dentist-turned-gambler-turned-gunfighter, his real-life story has been fictionalized through countless portrayals in film and TV. Throughout the years, Doc has been portrayed in a wide variety of ways, ranging from the cold and calculating to the charming and unpredictable.

Among the many actors who have taken on the role, Val Kilmer and Adam West stand out for their takes on the character, even though they played him decades apart. Kilmer’s portrayal in Tombstone remains one of the most iconic, playing Doc as a brilliant and witty man battling tuberculosis. West, on the other hand, took on the role in the late 1950s and early 1960s in a series of TV Westerns, bringing a more classic version of the gunslinger. Despite these differences, both actors made their portrayals memorable, adding to the character's legendary status in the Western genre.

'I'm Your Huckleberry': What Tombstone's Most Quotable Line Actually Means (& Why Fans Get It Wrong)
Image
Quick Links"I'm Your Huckleberry" Has Become an Iconic Line of DialogueMany Tombstone Fans Have Misinterpreted Val Kilmer's Most Famous LineWhat Does "I Am Your Huckleberry" Really Mean?

Since its release, Tombstone has become one of the most beloved films in the Western genre. With its impressively stacked cast of A-listers, and famous scenes featuring iconic lines of dialogue, it's no wonder why it's considered to be such an influential classic. One of the most quoted lines in the entire film is spoken by Val Kilmer in his standout performance as Doc Holliday and is something that has become just as meaningful to the actor on a personal level as it is in the context of the story. As simplistic as the three words "I'm your Huckleberry" may sound, those who have seen the film know just how powerful and poignant this one particular line is. Over the years,...

10 Darkest Moments in Tombstone, Ranked
Image
The 90s Western Tombstone sees storied lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) attempt to live a civilian life after moving to Tombstone, Arizona, with his extended family. Despite the presence of a criminal gang known as the "Cowboys," Wyatt initially prospers in the frontier town as a card dealer at a saloon. Unfortunately, his brother Virgil (Sam Elliott) becomes the local sheriff and Wyatt is drawn into a bloody war with the Cowboys.

Tombstone skillfully blends action, humor, and romance in its exploration of Wyatt Earp's time in Arizona. While there are plenty of light and heartwarming moments, the film doesn't shy away from the bloody and depressing parts of the story. In fact, its unwavering examination of these dark moments are some of its rawest and most emotional scenes.

‘Virus’ – Revisiting the Comic, the Novel, and the Movie Jamie Lee Curtis Calls “Unbelievably Bad”
Image
The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.

It was in 1995 that Universal first approached John Bruno about helming Virus. Initially, the visual effects artist was hesitant about directing a feature, and Pfarrer’s screenplay was a major factor in that uncertainty; he found it to be too dense and complicated for his liking. Yet after a talk with colleague and friend James Cameron, Bruno eventually accepted the offer, providing that...

5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in August 2024
Image
New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of August 2024.

Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s offerings include a horror take on a classic fairy tale, a creature-feature, and more.

Dead Kids (1981)

Dead Kids a.k.a. Strange Behavior (1981)

Directed by Michael Laughlin.

While College Colors Day (August 30) is a time to be proud of your alma mater, the students and faculty of Galesburg University likely feel less spirited after the events of Dead Kids. In this sci-fi/horror chiller, college experiments on a Midwestern community’s young people result in murder. Several, in fact. The guinea pigs’ homicidal impulses amount to a few rather creepy sequences in this “bad science” slasher.

Dead Kids, also known as Strange Behavior, is...

What Happened To Big Nose Kate After Tombstone's Ending & Doc Holliday's Death
Image
Big Nose Kate was a significant part of Doc Holliday's life, but her role is not prominently shown in the movie Tombstone. Their relationship was turbulent, but despite their fights, Kate remained by Doc's side until his death from tuberculosis. After Doc's death, Kate remarried but later left her abusive husband. She lived a resilient and independent life, working as a prostitute and eventually joining the Arizona Pioneer's Home before her death at age 90.

Big Nose Kate (Joanna Pacula) doesn't feature very prominently in Tombstone, but it doesn't mean that she wasn't a big part of Doc Holliday's (Val Kilmer) life, and live a full life after her time in the titular town in Arizona. The '90s Western, which focuses primarily on the true story of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday both before and after the infamous "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" does not include how Doc met Kate,...

Virus (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The Virus episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Ric Solomon, Narrated by Adam Walton, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

The ’90s are chock full of some great sci-fi horror films. Who can forget Event Horizon, The Lawnmower Man, Mimic or Deep Blue Sea…. ya know, the one where Samuel L. Jackson gets eaten by a shark? Anyways, let’s fast forward to the end of the decade, 1999 in particular. It was, and still is, considered to be the best year movies were released. In January, director John Bruno would bring us the film, Virus (watch it Here). A movie that makes us ask the question “Wtf Happened To This Horror Movie?”

Back in 1992, writer Chuck Pfarrer and Canadian artist Howard Cobb brought to life the comic series Virus. The story revolves around a group of...

Streaming Review: "Gorky Park" (1983) Starring William Hurt And Lee Marvin (Amazon Prime)
Image
By Lee Pfeiffer

With Russia currently warming up to the idea of a new Cold War, I thought it might be relevant to look back on the 1983 crime thriller "Gorky Park". The film was based on Martin Cruz Smith's international bestseller and was unique in its day because it centered on subterfuge within the Soviet law enforcement system and was set primarily in Moscow. Director Michael Apted had hoped to be the first major Hollywood studio production to shoot within the Soviet Union but unsurprisingly he was turned down due to the fact that the story dealt with systemic corruption throughout every layer of the government. Apted settled for the next best thing, shooting in Finland and Sweden, both of which make convincing substitutes for the Ussr. Transforming the lengthy, complex novel to a screenplay could have been no easy task, even for acclaimed screenwriter Dennis Potter ("Pennies from Heaven...

Texas Frightmare 2012: Tales from 'Tombstone'
Few genres have been as seminal a part of American and world cinema as the Western. Before the talkies, good guys in white punched and shot bad guys in black. While the genre has faded in recent years, several Western gems have stepped to the forefront. In 1993, Tombstone was such a gem.

Texas Frightmare Weekend held a reunion for the movie with Austin actress Dana Wheeler-Nicholson as well as Michael Biehn, Joanna Pacula, Michael Rooker and Buck Taylor. The men in the cast chatted about working with gunfight experts and living with their weapons for weeks to get the feel for it. The women were proud of their authentic costumes, with this drive for authenticity made more important to them when they learned of the competing film Wyatt Earp being shot at the same time. Tombstone was the underdog going up against the Kevin Costner Western.

It didn't take long...

Film review: 'In Praise of Older Women' Lacking Praise for 'Older Women'
Ingrid Rubio in Todas las azafatas van al cielo (2002)
Two decades after its first wan movie adaptation (starring Tom Berenger), Stephen Vizinczey's novel "In Praise of Older Women" has been transformed into another movie that doesn't quite work. Although the setting has been changed from World War II-era Hungary to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, this version is equally unsuccessful in its depiction of a teenager's erotic coming of age.

The Spanish feature, which received its U.S. premiere at the 15th Miami Film Festival, has some names in its cast (Faye Dunaway, Joanna Pacula) and can certainly exploit its sexual content, but theatrical prospects are limited.

"Women" chronicles the amorous adventures of 15-year-old Andres, who is abandoned by his mother. He falls in with a group of anti-fascist rebels near the front, where he has his first romantic experience with a beautiful but slightly seedy countess (Dunaway) who is not above providing sexual favors to assure safe passage for her and her husband.

Andres is then sent to stay at his sergeant's house in Barcelona, where he quickly falls under the spell of the sergeant's beautiful daughter Julia (Ingrid Rubio). Unfortunately, Julia's not-so-understanding mother catches the two in the act and kicks Andres out. Making his living as a black marketeer, Andres enjoys a dissolute but dissatisfying lifestyle until the war ends, when he reunites with his mother, now married to a prominent fascist. His next experience comes with a married neighbor, Marta (Pacula), who starts out educating Andres about books but continues with lessons of a far different kind.

The political aspects of the film are interesting but far from compelling, and screenwriter Rafael Azcona and director Manuel Lombardero fail to render Andres' romantic adventures with sufficient poignance or depth. Even worse, most of the story is not particularly erotic.

The film drifts from one listless episode to another, and many of the characterizations are too broadly drawn to be credible, but not broad enough to be truly entertaining. It does have an evocative re-creation of the period and gorgeous cinematography that makes ordinary objects glimmer with passion. But as with the story and characterizations, all the pleasure lies on the surface.
