The 69th Taormina Film Festival boasts an impressive lineup of Italian and world premieres as it seeks to reboot and re-establish its status as a date to watch on the festival circuit. Located in the historical Sicilian town – its visibility recently getting an unlooked for boost with the second season of HBO’s ”The White Lotus” – will be hosting a series of screenings. The outdoor Teatro Antico will provide a suitably antique background for the Italian premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” with Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, and Mads Mikkelsen in attendance.
The directorial debut of Italian artist Marco Perego, “The Absence of Eden,” will receive its world premiere. The film stars Perego’s wife Zoe Saldaña, Garrett Hedlund and Adria Arjona. The thriller tells the story of an undocumented immigrant fleeing a drug cartel whose path crosses with a U.S. Immigration...

The European Film Academy is changing the date of its annual award ceremony, the European Film Awards, so that it will be positioned within the awards season at the start of the year.
After the 37th edition in December 2024, the 38th edition will take place mid-January 2026 and will celebrate the best European films from the previous year. The date change is a next step in the repositioning and rebranding process of the event and the work of the European Film Academy.
With the European Film Awards moving a month later to the beginning of the calendar year, European nominees and winners will be featured much more visibly within the awards season, culminating with the Oscars.
As the nominations for the European Film Awards will continue to be announced by mid-November each year, the date change will create a larger window for nominated films to be promoted. Academy members eligible to...

If you are a movie geek, just knowing that a movie is produced by Dino De Laurentiis is a sign that the movie is usually worth your attention. Flash Gordon though is also a film that doesn’t just need that association, it instead stands on its own; and while it may not be Star Wars, it definitely has a place in the hearts of science fiction fans.
Finding himself kidnapped by Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol), Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) and friend Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) find themselves travelling to the planed Mongo. When arriving they find themselves fighting the tyrannical Emporer Ming (Max von Sydow) not only to save Earth, but maybe even the entire universe.

Flash Gordon still stands alone in the pantheon of comic book movies 40 years on. Colorful, vibrant, kinky, and often absurd, Mike Hodges’ gaudy tale of an all-American boy defeating a powerful villain from space and saving the Earth in the process had until recently felt far removed from the predominantly safe and CG-heavy comic book fare of the last few decades, despite its familiar themes and due in large part to its distinct refusal to take itself seriously. But the film we know and love is a world away from how it began.
Back in the 1970s, wealthy businessman and film producer Dino De Laurentiis held on to the Flash Gordon rights after George Lucas’ attempts to extricate them. A much-less-minted Lucas was forced to make his own space adventure movie instead, a little project called Star Wars. Its success indisputable, De Laurentiis was more determined than ever to make...

To celebrate the upcoming 40th anniversary of Flash Gordon, one of the most iconic sci-fi/comic-book adaptations in history, we sat down with stars Sam Jones & Melody Anderson – who played Flash Gordon and Dale Arden in the film – to chat about its enduring legacy and why nothing has matched it just yet.
Hoping to have come to the UK to celebrate before Covid-19 lockdown, Anderson says its the fan response and the film’s long-lasting legacy that keeps her excited and says the film was very ahead of its time for many reasons. At the time, many flocked to see Star Wars and Superman: The Movie and its campy, funnier tone may have put some people off but that over time, people have continuously flocked to it for those reasons. She also spoke to us about the difficult shoot, the sadly never-produced sequels, her memories of Max von Sydow and...

The man who can do no wrong. Taika Waititi, has been commissioned to figure out a way to bring together an animated ‘Flash Gordon’ for Disney’s newly acquired 20th Century Fox.

‘Flash Gordon’ is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. The strip was first published in 1934, it was inspired by and created to compete with, the already established ‘Buck Rogers’ adventure strip.

This fall semester I started taking an Italian language class two evenings a week with my daughter, and Thursday night I was looking to decompress after our first big quiz. (Scores haven’t been revealed yet, but I think we did just fine.) So I started rummaging through my shelves and came across the Warner Archives DVD of Francesco Maselli’s A Fine Pair (1968), an ostensibly breezy romantic caper comedy which reteams Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale, a pairing their public was presumably clamoring for after their previous outing together in Blindfold (1965), a Universal programmer written and directed by Phillip Dunne, the screenwriter of, among many other notable movies, How Green Was My Valley. I’ve had a mad crush on Claudia ever since I first saw her in Circus World (1964) with John Wayne when I was but a youngster, and I always welcome the chance to visit movies of...

It's 100 years since the first volume of À La Recherche du Temps Perdu was published, but a definitive cinematisation of Proust's epic novel has so far proved elusive
This year has been punctuated by a rash of anniversary-themed books and articles anticipating the first world war centenary, and indeed attempting snapshots of how Europe looked and felt in 1913, eerily poised on the precipice. The other centenary is similar in many ways: on 8 November 1913, Marcel Proust published the first volume of À La Recherche du Temps Perdu, his monumental novel about memory, mortality and art, the belle époque, and the leisured and aristocratic classes of Paris, a city crammed in Proust's pages with the most vivid and extraordinary personalities, destined to be swept away by the Great War.
Fourteen years ago, at Cannes, I saw Raúl Ruiz's superlative screen adaptation of the final volume: Time Regained, in which the narrator,...

"Science Fiction Double Feature" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show references lots of movies. We unpack it all...
I have watched, well, not exactly watched, but experienced The Rocky Horror Picture Show over 100 times. I’ve only watched it about 30 times. I saw it in the movies and on HBO about five times before I couldn’t take it anymore and troweled makeup on, ripped up some fishnet stockings and took to a stage myself. Figured I was a natch, had the same hair as Tim Curry and did his voice in a passable mimic, not that I'd need it.
I performed in a Friday night cast 72 times from when I was 15 to when I was 17. I started as Dr. Frank N. Furter and when I was replaced by a woman in lingerie, as opposed to a guy in drag, I played Janet for a while. The...

The film that possibly gave Mariangela Melato her biggest worldwide exposure was strangely omitted from her obituary. It is Flash Gordon (1980), in which she played the role of Kala, the Emperor Ming's head of security. I directed it and can vouch that Mariangela and Max von Sydow, both very serious actors, revelled in portraying these outrageous villains. We had a lot of fun making that film and I think the fun that she had is up there on the screen.
I had no idea that she had started her career with the radical theatre company of Dario Fo and his wife, Franca Rame, so I did not get to talk to her about what must have been an amazing time in her life. In the mid-60s Fo and Rame performed in London and I became an immediate fan, seeing them on three consecutive nights. Now I can clearly see...

Listing the best films of any year comes down to a matter of ordering -- Which film will I say was the absolute best? Listing the worst films of a particular year comes down to being honest with yourself -- Did I dislike it enough to call it one of the worst? However, when it comes to disappointments it's a different story. As a movie critic, maybe it's different for me. People tend to believe critics should walk into every movie without anticipation or excitement. Then, if that perception is held up, those that disagree with your opinion will either say "Yeah, but you didn't want to see it anyway!" or "You were always going to like that film." I do my best to let my opinion be known before seeing most films (running a blog of daily opinions helps). I do my best to avoid expectations (not watching trailers...

Sam J. Jones will forever be associated with his iconic role as American football star-turned “saviour of the universe” Flash Gordon. It’s a character which has been firmly ingrained in the pop culture subconscious for decades now, with many fanboys who come of age in that era heartily embracing him.
It clearly made a huge impact on a young Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, who brought the actor back to the big screen, via a wondrous (and strangely touching) performance in this summer’s comedy box office champ, Ted (now available on DVD and Blu-ray).
We recently caught up with the 58 year-old actor and owner of a business which specialises in corporate security and hostage extraction (naturally) to talk about his appearance in Ted and how his role in that 1981 sci-fi extravaganza has shaped his life.

Woody Allen’s latest offering charts his European Travel Period down south to Rome, Italy in “To Rome With Love.”
Fortunately, it proves a cure for the hangover I’ve had since the atrocious “Midnight in Paris.” (While I was not able to review that film in a timely manner, know that I Hated it. I realize many people disagree with me; of course they are entitled to their wrong opinion.)
Criminally, I have not set foot on Italian soil, but I’m going to give Woody the benefit of the doubt to say he captured the feeling of Italy since he did indeed capture the chilly, dull tones that of London in “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger” that I know from living there.

Woody Allen's To Rome with Love (aka The Wrong Picture, aka The Bop Decameron, aka Nero Fiddled) now has a trailer as its curious path to the big screen continues. I say curious because it almost feels as if this film was shot in a matter of two days and is finally here as we frequently get so few details on Allen's films until we have a trailer, but this one seems to have been covered with regularity all throughout production. Then again, perhaps it's because Allen's Midnight in Paris enjoyed a year-long lovefest after debuting at Cannes last year to the point Allen's name never left our consciousness. Or it's because it's gone through so many title changes as evidenced above. Either way, To Rome with Love is set to hit theaters on June 22 and I fully expect it to play at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The...

I like to see what looks like some renewed excitement for a new Woody Allen feature as it seemed like interest may have been fading a bit before Midnight in Paris after You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, but it seems Woody's venture to Rome in To Rome with Love has people talking and today Sony Pictures Classics have uploaded five new pictures from the film to their newly launched Facebook page. In the pics you'll get looks at Penelope Cruz, Alex Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Jesse Eisenberg and a first look at Ellen Page's character, whom I think we can now assume is in a relationship with Eisenberg. The plot is a bit wide open and non-specific telling us this is a story about a number of people in Italy -- some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors -- and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into.

Woody Allen’s next film, heretofore known as ‘Nero Fiddled’, was officially re-titled yesterday and given a new name that should see it resonate better in its international territories, and so from here on out we’ll know it as ‘To Rome With Love’.
We now have the first eleven images to share with you, some images of the film itself and others including Allen on set, as well as the full cast line-up (which is excellent) and the full soundtrack details (which are just a little bit impeccable).
The romantic-comedy is made up of four vignettes, two of which revolving around American characters and two around Italian characters, with the main cast including the likes of Allen himself, Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Roberto Benigni, Judy Davis, Greta Gerwig, and Alison Pill.

Update: I've already realized I forgot to add Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and John Hillcoat's The Wettest County to this list. That would make 27. I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. What's wrong with that? Granted, as is often the case when looking this far into the future, several of these films may end up being duds. Some may not actually hit theaters in 2012 (though most do have established release dates) and others just might...

Top Ten Most Anticipated Films of 2012
Today we reach the top of the list as we come to the top ten movies I'm anticipating most over the next 12 months. The group is a mixture of festival hopefuls and studio titles I'm sure many of you expected, especially considering they weren't listed on my three previous installments. Perhaps that makes this less top ten a little less exciting, but I also hope I have a few on here you did not expect and perhaps hadn't even heard of. On paper, 2012 looks like it will be an amazing year and if all goes well my top 40 is only scratching the surface. That said, on top of my top ten in this post, below and at the bottom of page two, are links to my previous three posts detailing all 40 of my most anticipated films: Most Anticipated 2012 Navigation

Woody Allen is faring pretty well these days after a good showing from Midnight in Paris. His next film was rumored to be starring some young and hip faces in that of Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page. There is now confirmation on those castings and that of Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, and Greta Gerwig. At the time of the last casting news, the film didn’t even have a name yet. The title will be The Bop Decameron.
We don’t know much about the film except that it’s a comedy and it could potentially be some reference to a collection of 100 stories by Giovanni Boccaccio. [Thanks to /Film]

Coming off Midnight in Paris, his biggest financial success in decades, Woody Allen is ready to shoot his 2012 film. It's called The Bop Decameron and he's just finalized the very impressive cast, many of which we were already aware of [1]. The most exciting news is the confirmation [2] that Allen himself will return to the screen after a few films off (his last one was 2006's Scoop). He'll star along with Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page. It'll start filming in Rome next month. While I have a great appreciation and respect for Woody Allen‘s earlier work, I had stopped paying attention to what he was crafting next after a string of disappointments and half-baked projects. That’s just changed for me, however, as I was lucky enough to see Midnight in Paris on Saturday. Thanks to this viewing, I am now firmly back on his side. If you haven’t checked it out yet, please do so — it’s easily one of his best movies in several years (even if that doesn’t sound like much).
