A ‘Delusional’ Jay Mohr Thought That Lorne Michaels Would Ask Him to Play Norm Macdonald for ‘SNL50’
Image
It seems as though most surviving former Saturday Night Live cast members were invited to attend February’s 50th anniversary celebration, even if they weren’t actually participating in the show itself. And while some ex-SNL stars bailed on the event for mysterious reasons, others were more than happy to come sit in the audience.

In the latter camp was Jay Mohr, who called his time at SNL50 the “greatest weekend of my life.” But according to Mohr, he did believe that there was a slight chance that he might be asked to fill in for a deceased star.

During a recent episode of his podcast Mohr Stories, the one-time Jerry Maguire villain told guest Will Forte that he spent the lead-up to the show fantasizing that Lorne Michaels and company would request that he impersonate the late Norm Macdonald. “(In) my delusional brain at SNL50, I’m like,...

Halt! Who goes there? A new Small Soldiers 4K Blu-ray will be hitting shelves this summer
Image
Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.

The movie includes an all-star cast with Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartman, Kevin Dunn, David Cross and Denis Leary. Meanwhile, the voice cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Frank Langella, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Shearer, Bruce Dern, Clint Walker, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christina Ricci.

The description reads,...

Peter Engel Dies: ‘Saved By The Bell’ Franchise & ‘Last Comic Standing’ Exec Producer Was 88
Image
Peter Engel, who executive produced Saved by the Bell, its spinoffs and 2020 reboot, Last Comic Standing and many other series, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 88. His family confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide a cause of death.

Engel exec-produced more than 1,000 hours of TV during a 40-year career, mostly for NBC as part of a long-term partnership. His credits also include scores of episodes of City Guys and Malibu CA — both of which he also created — along with Hang Time, USA High, California Dreams, How to Survive a Marriage and others.

He also wrote more than 100 episodes of City Guys, nearly as many of USA High and 50-plus for Malibu CA.

Engel penned a dozen episodes of teen sitcom Saved by the Bell, which NBC aired mostly on Saturday mornings from 1989-93. The popular show helped launch the careers of such stars as Mark-Paul Gosselaar,...

How Kate Hudson’s Longtime Relationship With Lakers President Jeanie Buss Shaped ‘Running Point’
Image
In Running Point, Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a reformed party girl who is unexpectedly put in charge of the family business — which just so happens to be pro basketball team the Los Angeles Waves.

If that story sounds slightly familiar, it may be because it’s somewhat based on the life of Jeanie Buss, controlling owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers who also serves as an executive producer on the Netflix series. And as it turns out, not only is Hudson playing a version of the Buss in the show, but they have a relationship that’s gone back decades.

“She was somebody that I’ve known since she was a teenager because her parents used to bring her to the L.A. Kings hockey games when I was managing the Forum, so I used to take her around,” Buss told The Hollywood Reporter at the show‘s Los Angeles premiere.

Critics Hated This 28-Year-Old Gangster Movie, But Its 2 Secret Endings Would've Made It Much Worse
Image
The crime thriller, Suicide Kings, released in 1997 to mixed reviews and a poor performance at the box office. Blending dark comedy, suspense, and gangster tropes, the film failed to connect with mainstream audiences and drew unfavorable comparisons to the work of Quentin Tarantino. Nearly three decades later, the movie has managed to develop a cult following among fans who think the story was underrated, but Suicide Kings has generallybeen forgotten. Of course, the film's fate could have been far worse if the producers had concluded the narrative with either of the two alternate endings.

Despite the arguable problems with the plot, Suicide Kings did wrap things up with a satisfying and thematically appropriate climax. Former mob boss Charlie Barret, with his henchman Lono, tracks down Max and Elise who, after betraying their friends, had absconded with his money. Confronting them on a boat, he offers some degree of sympathy for...

5 Sitcom Stars Who Went on to Win Oscars
Image
Who knew a part on Happy Days could lead to cinema immortality? From Robin Williams to Sally Field, the list of Oscar winners who started as sitcom goofs is much longer than you might expect.

Here are five more Academy Award recipients who cashed their first showbiz paychecks on classic situation comedies…

1 Leonardo DiCaprio

DiCaprio was earning movie accolades early in his career, still a teenager when he was Oscar-nominated for Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape? But does he get that role without his breakthrough as Luke Brower, the homeless kid who gets taken in by the Seavers on the ‘80s sitcom Growing Pains? TV mom Joanna Kerns remembers DiCaprio always messing around between takes. “He was totally mischievous,” she told The Independent. When Tobey Maguire, a member of DiCaprio’s infamous Pussy Posse, came around the set, “They looked like they were really up to no good.”

Adam Sandler makes surprising SNL cameo for buddy Chris Rock
Image
From Canteen Boy to Opera Man, Adam Sandler was one of the baddest of the so-called Bad Boys of SNL. And while a lot of people couldn’t stomach the antics of that generation of players, that was the era I came up on and so have a special place for SNL cast members like the Sandman, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Chris Farley. So when there was a Studio 8H reunion between Sandler and Rock on this weekend’s episode of SNL, it hit the spot.

With Chris Rock serving as host for the fourth time, it might have seemed obvious that at least one other SNL alum would pop up; fortunately, it turned out to be one of the most successful ever, with Sandler making a surprise appearance in the “Gallbladder Surgery” sketch. In the bit, Sandler plays the patient to Rock’s surgeon, waking up only to have punctured an artery.

Jim Abrahams, Airplane! and The Naked Gun Filmmaker, Dies at 80
Image
Filmmaker Jim Abrahams, whose work includes co-directing the iconic comedy movie Airplane!, has passed away.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jim Abrahams died on Tuesday at his home in Santa Monica, California. According to his son, Joseph, the filmmaker's passing was due to natural causes. He was 80 years old.

Abrahams has long been known for his work on several popular slapstick comedy movies. He frequently collaborated with filmmaking brothers Jerry and David Zucker, and the trio co-wrote John Landis' 1977 comedy Kentucky Fried Movie. They followed this up by co-writing and co-directing Airplane!, the 1980 spoof of disaster movies starring Leslie Nielsen, Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, and Robert Stack.

With a budget of less than $4 million, the comedy earned over $171 million at the box office. The film also won a WGA Award for Best Adapted Comedy. It is still remembered fondly as one of the best slapstick comedies ever made, often quoted by...

Jim Abrahams Dies: ‘Airplane!’, ‘Naked Gun’ & ‘Police Squad!’ Writer-Director Was 80
Image
Jim Abrahams, part of the writing-directing-producing team behind such comedy touchstones as Airplane!, the Naked Gun films, and Police Squad!, died Tuesday at his Santa Monica home. He was 80.

His son, Joseph Abrahams, confirmed the news to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter.

Along with brothers David and Jerry Zucker, Abrahams also was behind laugh-inducing — and often intentionally groan-inducing — comedy films including Top Secret! and the Top Gun spoofs Hot Shots! and Hot Shots! Part Deux. Students of the Mel Brooks School of Anything for a Laugh, the trio paired absurd situations with deadpan lines and fueled Leslie Nielsen’s unlikely rise to leading man after 30 years in the business.

The trio got their big-screen start writing The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), a series of decidedly un-pc vignettes directed by John Landis that ranged from silly to uproarious to “what the hell?!” and back. Sample: A TV news anchor deadpans from...

5 Famous Comics You Didn’t Know Wrote for ‘SNL’
Image
You could make a damn fine Saturday Night Live cast out of funny people who never made it out of the writers’ room. That group reads like a cast of comedy all-stars, united by the fact that nearly all of them had a miserable time on the show.

Here are five famous comics you might not have realized wrote for SNL...

1 Zach Galifianakis

The Hangover star and eventual SNL host lasted two weeks as a writer in 2000 before deciding he wasn’t cut out for the sketch grind. The concepts he pitched all landed with a thud, including an idea he had for a Britney Spears-hosted show.

Galifianakis (and America) noticed that young Spears “showed her belly button a lot,” he told Rob Lowe on his Literally podcast. That prompted an idea in which Will Ferrell would play a security guard stationed inside Spears’ navel, courtesy of the magic of green screen.

Johnny Knoxville in Jackass (2000)
Interview: Johnny Knoxville, Bobby Lee and More Talk Sweet Dreams
Johnny Knoxville in Jackass (2000)
Having spent many years as a fan of Jackass, I’ve always gravitated to the career of Johnny Knoxville. The actor has a new feature currently available for streaming or purchase on Prime, and frankly, he’s excellent in it. Sweet Dreams tells the story of Morris, a man who has found himself at a sober living facility. The film, written and directed by Lije Sparks, is a sweet, funny, and heartfelt tale, one that is utterly inspiring. The sports aspect is fun, as the group put together a ragtag softball team to save their place, but it’s also a serious work. Also starring Kate Upton, Bobby Lee, Jay Mohr, and Gata, it’s an inspiring film with a huge heart.

I’ve always enjoyed chatting with Mr. Knoxville, and this was no exception. Both Johnny and Mr. Sarki opened up about bringing a bit of positivity to those struggling with addiction.

Sweet Dreams Star Johnny Knoxville Compares New Comedy to Bad News Bears
Image
Johnny Knoxville takes on a role that comes with just as much drama as it does comedy with the new film Sweet Dreams. It's a film that the Jackass star compares to the classic sports comedy Bad News Bears, but with adults.

Sweet Dreams was directed by Lije Sarki, who joined Knoxville to speak about the movie with Cbr's Kevin Polowy following its digital release on April 16. In the film, Knoxville plays a recovering alcoholic who forms a baseball team with a group of misfits to save their rehab facility from getting auctioned. Sarki mentioned how the film was inspired in part by his real life, as he's struggled with addiction in the past. Though this is serious subject matter, the goal was to make light of it in an entertaining way with Sweet Dreams.

Bobby Lee & GaTa on Bringing Real-Life Experience to New Film Sweet Dreams
Image
Most people love an uplifting sports movie, but what if the story were to focus on more than just a bunch of guys trying to win some sort of championship? Paramount's new film Sweet Dreams gets its title from the name of a rehab facility that houses men on the path of sobriety, men who ultimately try to keep their lights on by competing in a softball league with a cash prize.

From writer-director Lije Sarki (producer on The Peanut Butter Falcon) and starring Jackass icon Johnny Knoxville as a recovering boozer who checks into "Sweet Dreams," the hard-hitting new dramedy also features some familiar faces like Bobby Lee (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle) and GaTa (Anyone But You). We recently caught up with the two gents in a paired interview to learn more about how their real-life experiences tied to addiction helped fuel their standout performances.

Johnny Knoxville Spent His 'Lifetime Preparing for This Role' in Sweet Dreams
Image
You might know him best from MTV's hilarious, groundbreaking, and painful show Jackass, with its latest movie receiving the most acclaim the franchise has ever experienced. Millennials may remember his fun little supporting turn in Walking Tall (2004) alongside Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But more recently, Johnny Knoxville has tackled a role he was perhaps born to play, a dramatic turn with shades of humor and hard R-rated banter about this cruel world we live in.

In Sweet Dreams, a new feature from Paramount and writer-director Lije Sarki (producer on The Peanut Butter Falcon), Knoxville plays a recovering alcoholic who joins a rehab home that the film is named after. We recently caught up with Knoxville and Sarki in a paired interview to learn more about their heartfelt new drama, which features a stellar cast that also includes familiar faces like Bobby Lee, Mohammed Amer, GaTa, and Kate Upton.

‘Sweet Dreams’ Director Lije Sarki on Sobriety, Softball and Johnny Knoxville’s Dramatic Turn
Image
Paramount Pictures hosted a ‘Friends & Family’ screening for its new Johnny Knoxville-starrer Sweet Dreams at L.A.’s Laemmle Royal on April 1. Even with a handful of comedians in the building and a date that coincided with April Fool’s Day, the world premiere of filmmaker Lije Sarki’s recovery-centered softball dramedy was no joke.

The scene mirrored much larger Hollywood premieres as members of the starry cast and their friends (Anderson .Paak, Bobby Lee, Lil Dicky) mingled with movie stars (Josh Brolin, Shia Labeouf). Guests took advantage of a red carpet complete with a veteran Tinseltown photographer (Todd Williamson) while others waited in long lines simply to get into the Laemmle (an overflow theater was added to accommodate the number of RSVPs).

Three days later, Sarki was still soaking it in. “It’s wild to me to have that much support,” said the filmmaker over coffee on the...

‘Sweet Dreams’ Review: Johnny Knoxville Gives Familiar Addiction Dramedy Some Soul
Image
Johnny Knoxville always seems to display an aching vulnerability, and it’s not just because he’s voluntarily endured years of intense bodily suffering as a result of his Jackass movies. So he seems the perfect choice to play the central character in Lije Sarki’s raucous black comedy that plays like a Bad News Bears featuring recovering addicts rather than precocious children.

Knoxville plays Morris, whose sad state of affairs is made immediately apparent in the opening scene: He’s shown waking up nearly naked and bloody on a park bench, having clearly been on one hell of a bender the night before. Even worse, he had apparently left his eight-year-old daughter home alone, making him realize he’s a danger to others as well as himself.

To try to get his life back on track, Morris signs up for a 90-day stint at Sweet Dreams, a rehab center...

10 Most Underrated 2000s Teen Horror Movies You Need To Watch
Image
Cherry Falls cleverly subverts slasher tropes with a feminist twist and black humor. Jennifer's Body offers a fresh take on possession with dark satire and stellar performances. The Loved Ones delivers a dark and twisted narrative with unexpected secrets and a shocking ending.

The 2000s aren’t always remembered as a great era for teen horror movies, but the decade did provide viewers with truly underrated gems from the sub-genre. The teen horror movie is tricky to define. Most viewers agree that teen horror movies need teenage heroes, but this alone doesn’t guarantee that a movie qualifies for the moniker. Donnie Darko is a deeply creepy movie about a teenager experiencing all manner of supernatural events, but it hardly fits the teen horror mold. Similarly, 2004’s Mean Creek is a bleak story about teens and murder, but it is far from a horror movie.

1998’s Disturbing Behavior is too sci-fi to qualify,...

Softball Coach Comedy 'Sweet Dreams' Trailer with Johnny Knoxville
Image
"You got 10 guys that need this place." Paramount has revealed an official trailer for a sports comedy called Sweet Dreams, a new film directed by the producer of sleeper hit The Peanut Butter Falcon previously. Opening in theaters in April this spring to enjoy. This fresh new comedy is a wild journey of second chances. Forced into rehab, Morris agrees to coach a misfit softball team of recovering addicts from his own house to prove that everyone, despite their past, can hit a home run. And maybe he will get his own life back on track, too. Johnny Knoxville stars as Morris, with an ensemble cast featuring Mo Amer, GaTa, Bobby Lee, Theo Von, Brian Van Holt, Jonnie Park, Shakewell, Adam Faison, plus Jay Mohr & Kate Upton. This doesn't look like it has the most original script, but it still does seem quite wholesome and amusing in an obnoxiously entertaining way.

Whatever Happened To Enola Actress Tina Majorino From Waterworld?
Image
In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.

Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Affleck will direct Animals from a script written by Connor McIntyre with revisions by Billy Ray. In addition to his directorial duties, Affleck will produce alongside Damon, Dani Bernfeld of Artists Equity, Brad Weston, and Collin Creighton of MakeReady, who set the project up with Fifth Season.

Crazy Props, Googly Eyes, Better Fake Vomit: ‘SNL’ Star Sarah Sherman Works to Make Viewers Laugh ‘While They Are Screaming in Horror’
Image
As the special-effects makeup chief for “Saturday Night Live,” Louie Zakarian often has interesting demands put on his time. He once transformed Kate McKinnon into an offbeat mermaid. And he worked with Kyle Mooney to create the Baby Yoda character who made frequent appearances on “Weekend Update.”

These days, Zakarian gets even more outlandish asks, thanks to Sarah Sherman, the “SNL” cast member who might, during one week, ask him to devise a fake seagull that can be impaled in her torso while moving its legs, and, in another, order up a costume so she can dress as the oddball Six Flags mascot, but still get back to normal for a subsequent sketch 10 minutes later.

“I’ve been at the show for 29 years now,” says Zakarian. “I get some pretty crazy requests, but some of Sarah’s are really out there.”

So too is Sherman herself, at least during the...

The Daily Wire Sets Adult Animated Comedy Series ‘Mr Birchum’ Starring Adam Carolla, Megyn Kelly, Brett Cooper, Roseanne Barr, Candace Owens, Danny Trejo & More
Image
Exclusive: Conservative media outlet The Daily Wire has commissioned its first animated scripted series, Mr Birchum, created by comedian and radio host Adam Carolla.

The series follows Carolla’s junior high woodshop teacher popularized on Kroq radio and brought to life in puppet form on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers.

In this animated update, according to producers, “Mr. Birchum attempts to navigate a world he doesn’t understand or approve of. He’s befuddled by his gaming streamer son, Eddie (Dunnigan), annoyed at his selfie-taking, snowflake students and is constantly at war with the school district’s appointed “J.E.D.I.” Mr. Karponzi (Fischer).”

The synopsis continues: “But his best buddy, auto-shop teacher Don Gage (Bodden), his wife Wendi (Kelly), and step-daughter Jeanie (Cooper) have his back, along with some fantasy mentors – the ghost of his gym teacher, Coach Murphy (Mohr) and childhood...

Singing Meatballs and Working With Vomit: Why ‘SNL’ Star Sarah Sherman Loves ‘Outrageous’ Comedy
Image
Some innovators try to devise a gadget that changes the world. Others hope to solve a global social ill. Sarah Sherman is eager to bring fake vomit on “Saturday Night Live” into the modern age.

The comic has gained notice on the long-running NBC late-night series for bizarre humor that blends gross-out jokes with a taste for the absurd. She’s been working with colleagues for months on new technology that would make the act of pretending to throw up onstage a lot easier — and more comfortable. For years, “SNL” cast members have relied on a tube tucked alongside their arm and usually inside a jacket sleeve that spews out liquid approximating vomit or blood. At just the right moment, the actor holds an arm close to the mouth, and the “vomit rig” does the rest. Dan Aykroyd used such a get-up in 1978 when playing Julia Child, who cut her hand open,...

Jay Mohr's Winning Time Season 2 Cameo & Buss Family Connection Explained
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Winning Time season 2, episode 6!

Jay Mohr plays Tom Collins, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's agent, in Winning Time season 2, episode 6, which could turn into a bigger role in the show's future. Jay Mohr is connected to the Buss family in real life, as he is married to the real Jeanie Buss, adding external relevance to his cameo on Winning Time season 2.

The real-life Buss family makes their first cameo on Winning Time season 2, episode 6 as comedian Jay Mohr joins the series’ cast. Since Winning Time picks up when Jerry Buss buys the Los Angeles Lakers, the owner’s family plays a major role in the series, including his daughter Jeanie Buss, who is still integral to the team's dynasty today. Considering Winning Time’s twist-filled drama of the Lakers’ 1980s domination takes some creative liberties, the HBO show has had mixed reception from the real people depicted.

One Beloved SNL Star Actor Openly Hated The Show Before Being Cast
Image
Jason Sudeikis admits that he publicly hated on Saturday Night Live before he was hired on the show and became a beloved cast member. Sudeikis was first hired on SNL in 2003 as a writer. By 2005, he had been hired as a cast member and served as a regular on the show until 2013. By 2011 he had his film breakthrough as Kurt Buckman in Horrible Bosses. He went on to star in We're The Millers and Horrible Bosses 2 before gaining critical acclaim with Ted Lasso.

While appearing on Hot Ones, Sudeikis admitted that he did publicly dismiss SNL before appearing on the show. He owned up to it because Bob Odenkirk has also been open about being dissatisfied with the show.

Sudeikis did explain, though, that his hatred for the show largely came from a place of "youthful ignorance and arrogance." He thought he would never have a shot at being on the show,...

‘Air’ (2023). Movie Review: In Case You Doubted It, Ben Affleck Can Direct Very Well
Image
Air is a film directed by Ben Affleck starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck himself.

With the same narrative premise as in Good Will Hunting, these two great actors return, in different ways, to join forces and give us another great film in the purest good-feeling style of the eighties.

This time, from the corporate world of Nike and from the iconic marketing campaign about the sneakers of none other than Michael Jordan.

Air (2023) About the movie

Some people don’t like him and others like him great, but Mr. Ben Affleck won an Oscar for Argo and here he achieves again a round film that, within its scheme, works perfectly, managing to accomplish a whole vision of the business world behind professional sports, giving entity and credibility to the characters, knowing how to execute the narrative tempos and achieving great performances (including his own).

On the technical side, also...

Are We There Yet?: Where The Movie's Cast Is Now
Image
The Are We There Yet? cast is full of great actors who have gone on to have prolific careers in the years since. Are We There Yet? revolves around Nick, a carefree bachelor who, in a bid to impress his new girlfriend Suzanne, offers to take her kids, Lindsey and Kevin, on a road trip, leading to one of the most nightmarish experiences of his life. From major roles like the kids to smaller roles like Al Buck the truck driver, who mistakes Nick for a kidnapper, the Are We There Yet? cast is full of hilarious roles that the film’s talented actors knocked out of the park.

When it was released way back in 2005, Are We There Yet? was a big enough hit with audiences to launch a franchise that includes a home renovation sequel, Are We Done Yet?, and a spin-off TV series with Terry Crews in the lead role.
