Bob Odenkirk Doubles Over Remembering His Favorite Unaired ‘SNL’ Sketch: ‘It Killed at Read-Through’ | Video
Image
Former “Saturday Night Live” writer Bob Odenkirk revealed his favorite unaired sketch from his 1987–1991 tenure on the show.

During a Friday appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Odenkirk reflected on the four years he spent working on “SNL” and the cast members he got to work with, including Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler and Chris Farley. When asked by Clarkson if he had a favorite sketch he wrote during his “SNL” run that never aired, Odenkirk replied, “There was one, in particular, I really loved. I wrote it for Jon Lovitz, if you know him. Very funny guy.”

“It’s about a hot dog vendor in New York and he’s got a trainee. He says [to his trainee], ‘Ok, you take the next guy.’ The guy walks up and he [asks for] a hot dog with mustard,” Odenkirk continued. “[The trainee] gives him a hot dog, puts mustard on it and hands it to him and, as...

A Cult Classic Fox Animated Sitcom Revival Could Happen Under One Condition
Image
The 1990s were a landmark time for adult animation on television. The decade was notably dominated by Fox's "The Simpsons," which broke new ground and numerous records for what viewers could expect from a family sitcom, showcasing some of the most colorful characters ever brought to the airwaves at that time. The success of "The Simpsons" helped pave the way for more animated sitcoms geared towards a more mature audience, with series such as "Beavis and Butt-Head," "Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist," "King of the Hill," "Daria," "South Park, "Family Guy," and "Futurama" taking shape. Some of these series would become cultural phenomena, still airing new episodes to this day, just like "The Simpsons," while some remain touchstones of the 1990s, with devoted cult followings. One of those cult classics is Fox's animated sitcom, "The Critic."

Created by Mike Reiss and Al Jean, who served as writers and showrunners for the...

'The Critic' Reboot: '90s Animated Series Close to Revival Deal
Image
It could be two thumbs up for the short-lived yet beloved animated series The Critic, as apparently the Jon Lovitz favorite is closer than ever to making a return. Premiering in 1994, The Critic starred Lovtiz as New York film critic Jay Sherman – host of the popular series Coming Attractions – who was known for his harsh delivery and searing commentary. The former SNL star has been "trying for years" to get the show rebooted, and now it may have some gas in the tank thanks to creator Al Jean.

Jean got his big break in the business as one of the original writers on The Simpsons before going off to create The Critic along with fellow writer Mark Reiss. Though it only lasted for two seasons, the series is still remembered today for not only Lovitz's wonderful performance, but for the many films it parodied during the course of its run.

The Critic Co-Creator Seems to Tease Revival 30 Years After Airing Final Episode
Image
The Critic only aired for two seasons in the 1990s, but three decades later, many fans still remember the series fondly. If there are enough of them interested, they could soon be getting good news with one of the creators of the show teasing a revival.

An animated sitcom, The Critic was created by Simpsons vets Al Jean and Mike Reiss. In a recent post on X, Jean shared an image of The Critic along with a message stating, "Just curious ... how many would like to see [The Critic], with [Jon Lovitz] return[?]" This is certainly not an official announcement that a revival is happening, but Jean seems to be hinting that it could be in the works. Perhaps Jean is testing the fan reactions to see how much interest there would be in a revival before fully committing to the idea. In two days' time, the post has garnered 15.2K likes.

Jon Lovitz calls for fans to help bring back The Critic
Image
Last Updated on March 31, 2025

By and large, the movies that Jay Sherman reviewed on Coming Attractions stunk. But here’s some news that doesn’t: Jon Lovitz is ready to get The Critic back on the air, and he even has the support of one of the show’s creators.

Jon Lovitz took to social media this week to share news that he is ready for The Critic to return, saying that co-creator Al Jean (The Simpsons) is also on board. “Critic Fans!!!! You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!! If you want it back, we need your help! Please like this post and spread the word! So we can show the studio, how many people want it!”

Jon Lovitz Has Been ‘Trying for Years’ to Bring ‘The Critic’ Back — He May Now Finally Have a Shot
Image
Hachi MacHi, the 1990s animated sitcom “The Critic” may finally be eyeing a return! Speculation is abuzz following two posts from the show’s co-creator, Al Jean, and its star, “Saturday Night Live” favorite Jon Lovitz, who both took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to get a sense for if the fans might want the series to be revived.

“Just curious … how many would like to see ‘The Critic,’ with Jon Lovitz return?” said Jean in his post on Thursday, March 27.

The following morning, Lovitz himself jumped into the fray. He wrote on X, “Critic Fans!!!! You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!!”

Based on the tens of thousands of likes and retweets, it would seem hunger for the show’s return is palpable, but Lovitz plead with fans to be vocal in their support.

This post contains spoilers for Rob Reiner's "North."

Not every film can become a crowd-pleasing blockbuster or achieve cult status. Some movies are purely mediocre (adequate even), as they have nothing extraordinary to offer yet make for a pleasant viewing experience. Then there are those that belong to the so-bad-its-good category, where we are meant to revel in the absurdity of a film that is enjoyable despite being laughably terrible.

As we inch closer to the edge of this spectrum, however, we come upon films that are irredeemably awful, like Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's infuriating, nonsensical "Disaster Movie" (a film IMDb has deemed the worst movie ever). But what about movies that failed, in every sense of the term, despite featuring a stacked cast of stars who've proven their talent time and again? Such is the case with Rob Reiner's "North," a pretty terrible film full of...

Amid a Back-to-the-Future Moment for Animation, Could ‘The Critic’ Make a Comeback?
Image
In an era where adult animation enjoys remarkable popularity and longevity, could another classic (albeit short-lived) 1990s animated sitcom make a comeback?

Jon Lovitz thinks so.

On Friday, the comedian said that he and creator Al Jean are developing a revival of The Critic, the series in which Lovitz played the film critic and Coming Attractions TV host Jay Sherman.

“You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!!” Lovitz posted.

Despite hailing from a slew of veterans from The Simpsons (including Jean, Mike Reiss, and James L. Brooks, who produced the show via his Gracie Films), the show never achieved Simpsons-level success, only airing 13 episodes over two seasons on ABC and later Fox.

It frequently parodied the entertainment business, with Sherman reviewing fake films (his catchphrase was “It stinks!”), and his boss, Duke Phillips, not-so-subtly inspired by Ted Turner.

Jon Lovitz Wants A Reboot Of ‘The Critic’
Image
The Critic was a cult adult animated comedy created by The Simpsons‘ Al Jean and Mike Reiss and voiced by Jon Lovitz.

The former SNL star now is lobbying for a reboot of the 1990s show and said that Jean is on board.

“Critic fans: You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!! If you want it back, we need your help! Please like this post and spread the word! So we can show the studio, how many people want it!,” Lovitz wrote on social media.

In the show, Lovitz voiced Jay Sherman, a 36-year old film critic from New York whose show Coming Attractions aired on the Philips Broadcasting cable network.

As a critic, Sherman is cold, mean-spirited, and elitist but at home, he has a gentler nature and is filled with self-doubt. The show also featured his son Martin,...

Jon Lovitz and Al Jean Send Up Trial Balloon for ‘The Critic’ Reboot
Image
With everyone else and their brother getting a reboot, why not an animated Jon Lovitz?

Both Lovitz and Simpsons legend Al Jean took to social media this week to drum up support for a reboot of The Critic, the animated sitcom about a TV movie critic that bounced around networks during its limited run. How much nostalgia is there for a Lovitz cartoon that only has 23 episodes? That’s what the guys want to know.

“Just curious,” asked Jean, “how many would like to see the Critic, with @realjonlovitz return?”

Lovitz, in true Lovitz fashion, was less subtle: “Critic Fans!!!! You keep telling me you want it back. I’ve been trying for years! Well, now, creator Al Jean is on board!!! If you want it back, we need your help! Please like this post and spread the word! So we can show the studio, how many people want it!

Five Great Sitcoms with Truly Terrible Final Seasons
Image
Plenty of sitcoms jump the shark. Sometimes the cast loses a key character or the writers run out of ideas. But perhaps the most frustrating foil is when a sitcom is solid all the way through only to shit the bed for its final season, tarnishing its legacy for all time.

If only these five shows had gotten out a year earlier, we could binge rewatch them without that looming sense of dread.

1 Roseanne

Roseanne is probably the most famous example of this, as the final season undermined the basic premise of the show. The whole idea behind Roseanne was that it was a show about a struggling blue-collar family in the Midwest and its best episodes often dealt with the Conners’ money troubles. So, in the final season, what do they do? The Conners win the lottery, eliminating their relatability.

The show also had its most beloved character, John Goodman’s Dan Conner,...

Why 'The Critic' Is the Only TV Show Roger Ebert Ever Reviewed
Image
Way before Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, Roger Ebert — the most influential film critic of all time — was the person both fans and moviemakers looked at to see if a movie had passed the quality test. Interestingly, he hardly ever glanced at television. The Pulitzer Prize winner reserved his sophisticated reviews for cinema, even though networks were kind to him. Apart from writing for the Chicago Sun-Times, Ebert hosted three review shows over the years, namely Sneak Previews, At the Movies, and Siskel & Ebert & the Movies.

Ebert’s preference for cinema is understandable, considering tons of new movies were coming out each month. If he chose to review TV shows too, he wouldn’t have had the time to watch everything. The latter would especially have been extremely time-consuming. Consequently, he would never have become the great prolific critic we remember him as. However, Ebert and his equally influential review buddy,...

‘SNL’ and Lady Gaga Just Kick-Started Another Satanic Panic
Image
Back in the 1980s, one couldn’t enjoy Dungeons & Dragons, He-Man or even the Care Bears without some dude who looked like a lounge singer that isn’t allowed within 1,000 feet of a public school claiming that it was really the handiwork of Lucifer himself.

But as we’ve mentioned before, the so-called “Satanic Panic” never truly went away. Even in the 21st century, fanatics still routinely accuse innocuous pop-culture properties of colluding with the Prince of Darkness, be it the 2024 Olympics’ opening ceremony, the Minions or the songs of Pat Benatar.

Now, in 2025, that same evangelical hysteria has come for Saturday Night Live.

This past weekend’s Lady Gaga-hosted episode included a sketch in which a group of friends dine out at a Friendly’s family restaurant, which Bowen Yang’s character points out still has “100 locations on the East Coast.” But when one of them lies...

Jerry Seinfeld Says ‘SNL’ Sketch Making Fun of Him Was ‘A Thrill’
Image
Funny is funny, Jerry Seinfeld often argues (sometimes in defense of some pretty cringe humor). But give the comedian credit. If the gag is good, Seinfeld will laugh hysterically — even if he is the butt of the joke.

Case in point: “The Standups,” a 1980s Saturday Night Live sketch that skewered Seinfeld’s stand-up style years before his titular sitcom debuted. Tom Hanks, Jon Lovitz and Dennis Miller play comedians backstage at a club, all speaking in that familiar “What’s the deal with…?” rhythm.

Play

“I just got back from eating Mexican,” jokes Miller in what has to be one of the earliest Jerry imitations. “And I’m thinking, Hey! What’s the deal with these refried beans? I mean, hey! Why do they have to fry them twice?”

Former Seinfeld writer Spike Feresten played the bit for Seinfeld on a recent episode of his Spike’s Car Radio podcast,...

'Reacher's Anthony Michael Hall Got His Breakout Role in a Hit Comedy
Image
Prime Video's hit Reacher is in the middle of its third season. As with the previous seasons, the new outing brings a host of new main characters. One of these is rug importer Zachary Beck, who offers Reacher a job after he saves Beck's son Richard. Beck is played by Anthony Michael Hall, who's enjoyed a nearly 40-year career in the industry.

That's right, Gen-x readers, the 1980s were four decades ago. Take a minute to process that if you need to. Hall was one of that decade's biggest teen stars, with appearances in Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science. He was a frequent collaborator with John Hughes, the king of '80s coming-of-age teen comedies. That partnership set Hall up for lifelong success, which is still an impressive feat in today's industry. Of those early parts, Sixteen Candles really gave Hall his breakout role. He followed that...

Here’s Every Pop Culture Changing Moment From ‘The Simpsons’ Most Influential Episode
Image
It’s been 30 years since The Simpsons premiered its most iconic episode that Matt Groening ever publicly disowned, and pop culture is still saying the quiet part out loud.

On March 5, 1995, Fox aired an episode of The Simpsons against the wishes of the show’s creator that would go down as one of the most referenced, quoted and influential episodes of any comedy show in TV history. “A Star Is Burns,” a crossover episode featuring the main character from Simpsons OGs Al Jean and Mike Reiss’ short-lived animated sitcom The Critic, premiered amidst a public catfight between Groening, The Simpsons and The Critic executive producer James L. Brooks and Fox itself. The network denied Groening’s request to pull “A Star Is Burns” from broadcast over what he considered to be a lack of integrity and shameless cross-promotion on the part of his colleagues and their side project, but Fox...

Ryan Reynolds Makes Veiled Reference to Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni Legal Drama on ‘SNL’ 50th Anniversary Special
Image
Ryan Reynolds made a veiled reference to the legal drama involving his wife, Blake Lively, and Justin Baldoni, on NBC’s Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special.

About an hour into Sunday’s three-hour-plus special, former castmembers Tina Fey and Amy Poehler appeared onstage to take questions from the audience.

One of the many stars in the audience was onetime host Ryan Reynolds, who was sitting next to a smiling Lively.

Asked how he was doing, Reynolds replied, “Great!” Then, seeming concerned, he asked, “Why, what have you heard?”

Lively then looked sharply at Reynolds and briefly lost her smile. It’s safe to assume that her stern look was part of the bit.

Before the broadcast, Reynolds and Lively walked the red carpet together.

Lively filed an 80-page complaint against her It Ends With Us co-star and director, Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment and launching a smear campaign against her.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Host Star-Studded ‘SNL50’ Q&a: Ryan Reynolds Teases Legal Trouble, Adam Driver Scowls and Cher Reigns
Image
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunited at the “SNL50” anniversary celebration for a star-studded segment framed around a Q&a, in which the two former cast members took “Saturday Night Live” questions from the audience.

Among the contributors called on were Ryan Reynolds, Cher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Quinta Brunson, Jon Hamm and Tim Meadows.

“Ryan Reynolds, how’s it going?” asked Fey and Poehler, to which he answered innocently, “Why? Have you heard something?” appearing to reference the recent Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni legal controversy. Reynolds went on to ask whether the material the Coneheads’ heads were made from was edible, and Fey and Poehler decided it was almost certainly very toxic.

The segment included a direct mention to the question that has swirled around “Saturday Night Live,” especially as the show has had a rebound in popularity over the past decade: When will Lorne Michaels retire?

The question was...

Saturday Night Live's biggest stars are everywhere these days: from the hallowed halls of Studio 8H, all the way to the beachy shores of Malibu, California. And in honor of the historic 50th anniversary of the longstanding comedy sketch series, everyone is getting in on the action of celebrating and honoring its many iconic moments. Including Volkswagen, which reunited Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Fred Armisen as "The Californians" in a commercial for their latest car.

The air-headed, valley girl-inflection-toting bottled blondes from the popular soap opera parody sketch star in the ad for the new Volkswagen ID Buzz, an electric take on their own California icon, the old Vw bus, which debuted on Thursday. And, frankly, it's giving nostalgia vibes in an extremely earth-conscious way, which is like, totally Californian of them. Tires season 2 coming in 2025 is the great news we needed (First-look images)
Image
Since the start of Netflix comedy series Tires, one of the main storylines is the fact that Will (Steven Gerben) hasn't been able to impress his father, Jonathan, in their family auto-repair business. Though by the end of season 1, the two finally get on the path of finding common ground and Will is able to get through to his dad. Which was heartwarming to see! So what about in Tires season 2?

Courtesy of Netflix © 2024, Veronika Slowikowsk Tires season 2 will be on Netflix this year

The good news is that we sort of know when the second season of the show is coming. While the streamer hasn't shared an exact release date just yet, Tires season 2 has been confirmed for a 2025 release on Netflix. Yay! I know that's very vague right now. Though with the streaming service waiting around two years between seasons for most of its shows, this is really good news.

Lauren Graham Was Once the Office Disruptor on This Cult Sitcom
Image
In her 30 years at the Atelier Advertising agency, Monica (Lauren Graham) has climbed the ladder of success. As we meet her, she’s CEO, she’s winning industry awards and she’s working on a commercial for Boppin’ Burgers to run during the Super Bowl. She’s even throwing a party at the office for the launch of a new campaign for Vibezz headphones! As everyone gathers to watch it air on TV, Monica seems unaware of its deficits. Playing into stereotypes — a Black guy breakdancing to hip-hop; a monk listening to vaguely Eastern New Age music — is bad; closing the spot with the slogan “All Vibezz Matter” is much worse. The office’s social media team, all young twentysomethings, probably would have tried to stop this ad from getting to air if they’d been involved in the creative process, but they weren’t, which is a mistake the...

40 Years Ago, 'SNL's Notorious "Weird Season" Bewildered Audiences
Image
For the last several decades, Saturday Night Live has been faced with questions of its future. While so many people claim not to watch or call it unfunny, everyone still talks about it and sketches still go viral. Some feel the show has run its course, the sketches need work, or members of the cast need to go. Nothing ever comes of it because Saturday Night Live is engrained as part of the fabric of late-night television that no one really ever expects to end. But there’s one point in time when Saturday Night Live almost did get canceled, and arguably should have been. The show was hanging by a thread, and instead of a complete cast shake-up saving the show, it led to a year that has become known as the “weird season.”

This was in 1985 during season 11, a bizarre season that the new Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night...

Why Damon Wayans Was Fired (And Brought Back) In SNL Season 11
Image
There are few jobs more sought-after in the comedy world than those on "Saturday Night Live," where a role as a cast member or even a seat in the writer's room can rocket comedians to super-stardom. So when actor and comedian Damon Wayans was offered a spot on the season 11 cast of the show in 1985, he jumped at the chance.

The season was supposed to be a reinvention and a return to form for "SNL," as creator Lorne Michaels was returning to helm the show for the first time in five years, and he hired an entirely new cast to try and shake things up. The season 11 cast featured a number of people who would go on to have decent comedy careers, like Joan Cusack, Jon Lovitz, and Dennis Miller, plus absolute superstar Robert Downey Jr., who was hired alongside his best friend Anthony Michael Hall, but at the time...

Image
Vince Vaughn is joining Shane Gillis in his Netflix comedy series “Tires” among other Season 2 guest stars Ron White, Jon Lovitz, Veronika Slowikowska and Steph Tolev. It was previously announced that Thomas Hayden Church would appear in the second season as Gillis’ character’s dad.

“Tires” follows Will (Steve Gerben), the awkward manager of his family’s auto repair shop, Valley Forge Automotive Center. 'You're Gonna Get Yourself On the Show': Robert Downey Jr. Reveals How He Landed SNL Job
Image
Marvel icon Robert Downey Jr. has revealed one of his famous friends helped him land an early job on Saturday Night Live. Downey was part of SNL’s cast during its 11th season, from 1985 to 1986.

The story of Downey’s single disastrous season on SNL is told in the new Peacock docu-series SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, where producer Lorne Michaels admits he “perhaps went too young” in casting Downey and Anthony Michael Hall for his return to the show in 1985. SNL’s 11th season was dogged by negative reviews, leading to Michaels dropping Downey and most of the cast before the next season.

Damon Wayans Purposely Got Fired from 'SNL' By Going Rogue
Image
Actor and comedian Damon Wayans has revealed how he purposely got fired from Saturday Night Live. Wayans got his start on the live comedy sketch show, and recently spoke with Variety about being fired from the show during Season 11. In the new Peacock docuseries, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, Wayans revealed that former SNL star Eddie Murphy, who Wayans had worked with just two years prior in the movie Beverly Hills Cop, offered the comedian advice after he joined the show's cast in 1985:

Eddie’s advice to me was, ‘Write your own sketches. Otherwise they’re going to give you some Black people sh*t to do, and you ain’t gon’ like it.

This advice would prove sound, as Wayans found himself written into other sketches, often cast in stereotypical or offensive roles. The comedian grew frustrated as his ideas were repeatedly scrapped or "cut for time" by the writers and producers,...

Robert Downey Jr. & Anthony Michael Hall Recall Brief ‘SNL’ Run: “I Learned So Much”
Image
After 50 years of pushing the boundaries of network television, Saturday Night Live has birthed countless talents across multiple generations.

Robert Downey Jr. and Anthony Michael Hall recently looked back on their brief run on the NBC sketch comedy show during the infamous Season 11, which ran from 1985 to 1986 and served as creator Lorne Michaels‘ attempt to refresh the show after Eddie Murphy‘s exit.

“I’m proud to be a part of it. It was like an out-of-body experience,” said Hall on the Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, recalling “just being shocked” at being the show’s youngest cast member at 17 after SNL “meant so much to me as a kid growing up in New York.”

Downey Jr. recounted his best friend and Weird Science co-star bringing him the opportunity. “Michael Hall said to me, I’m gonna go do SNL. I’m gonna get you an audition and I...

10 Most Controversial Saturday Night Live Skits & Moments Of All Time
Image
Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running television shows of all time, but it has caused quite a bit of controversy throughout its 50 years on screen. 2025 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the popular comedy show, and there are multiple specials about Saturday Night Live's anniversary coming out in January and February of this year. One of them, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, was just released and touches upon some of the most iconic and oddest moments from the show.

SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night was primarily focused on celebrating the history and achievements of the show rather than on identifying the controversies and scandals that have taken place over the show's several decades, though. The docuseries did explore the "weird year" of Saturday Night Live (referring to season 11 of the show), but SNL has received much more significant backlash for some of its decisions than it did for that unpopular season.

‘SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night’ EP Wanted Peacock Docuseries to Be More Than a ‘Greatest Hits Clip Show’
Image
From the moment Morgan Neville was approached about making a documentary tied to the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live,” he knew that he didn’t want to capture this comedy staple in a traditional way.

“The idea of doing 50 years of ‘SNL’ in 90 minutes, it’s going to be a greatest hits clip show, which is not interesting to me,” Neville, the executive producer behind Peacock’s ‘SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” told TheWrap. “I always feel like the fool’s errand of a lot of storytelling is trying to be completist. Everything is reductive, but filmmaking is particularly reductive.”

Instead of the predictable, Neville opted for a format that was “more irreverent and risk-taking,” an ethos that has always defined NBC’s crown jewel. To do that, Neville recruited four of his favorite directors — Robert Alexander, Neil Berkeley, Marshall Curry and Jason Zeldes — to each direct their own distinct episode.

Damon Wayans on Why He “Purposefully” Got Himself Fired From ‘SNL’: “I Snapped”
Image
Damon Wayans is opening up about his reason for “purposefully” getting himself fired from Saturday Night Live following his short run on the NBC show in the ’80s.

The actor and comedian appeared on the Peacock docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, where he looked back at his time on the sketch comedy series as well as his departure. He was a castmember on SNL during season 11 in 1985.

Wayans said he had already been working on characters ahead of his audition, as he felt he was “born to be on Saturday Night Live.” He also recalled getting some advice from Eddie Murphy (who was also on SNL in the early ’80s) while appearing in Beverly Hills Cop in 1984.

“Eddie’s advice to me was, ‘Write your own sketches. Otherwise, they’re gonna give you some Black people shit to do, and you ain’t gonna like it,” Wayans said.

Once he was cast,...

Damon Wayans Sr. Says Eddie Murphy Predicted All the ‘SNL’ Problems That Led to His Firing
Image
Back in the early 1980s, Eddie Murphy straight up saved Saturday Night Live from extinction, but when Damon Wayans Sr. joined the show in 1985, Murphy tried to save him the trouble.

Though Murphy’s four seasons on SNL simultaneously skyrocketed him to superstardom and saved the show from fizzling out in its post-Belushi, post-Radner era, Murphy’s relationship with the comedy institution that owes him its very existence was rocky both during and after his time in the cast. Despite being SNL’s absolute messiah, Murphy had struggles with the nearly all-white SNL writing staff during his meteoric rise, and when a future In Living Color star arrived at 30 Rockefeller Plaza shortly after Murphy left, Murphy advised Wayans to watch his back.

After just a year at SNL, Wayans would publicly force Lorne Michaels to release him from his contract by pulling a mid-sketch stunt that would live in infamy.

Damon Wayans ‘Purposely’ Got Himself Fired From ‘SNL’ by Going Off Script: ‘I Snapped. I Just Did Not Care’
Image
Damon Wayans has revealed how he “purposely” got himself fired from “Saturday Night Live” by going off script.

Wayans was a cast member for Season 11 of the sketch comedy series, which has been deemed “the weird year,” as it marked Lorne Michaels’ return after a brief hiatus. Instead of adding up-and-comers from the comedy clubs, Michaels decided to hire an all-new cast of already-established stars. With poor reviews and low ratings, the series was on the verge of being canceled.

Wayans explained in the new Peacock docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night” that he was not nervous about auditioning for the show, and that he had a handful of characters he had been working on. “I felt like I was born to be on ‘Saturday Night Live,'” he said.

He had former “SNL” star Eddie Murphy’s advice in the back of his head: “Eddie’s advice to me was,...
