Masters Of The Universe is finally – finally! – getting a Blu-ray release
Dolph Lundgren
Dolph Lundgren’s take on He-Man finally comes to Blu-ray, as 1987’s Masters Of The Universe heads to the format in the UK this month.

Well about time. By the power of Grayskull, or the tenacity of 88 Films, the 1987 big screen take on Masters Of The Universe is finally coming to Blu-ray.

The movie wasn’t a success when it was released in cinemas – that’s no understatement – and reviewers were hardly on the kind side. Yet the film has endured, with Dolph Lundgren’s personification of He-Man the current definitive cinematic take on the character. Several attempts have been made to get another Masters Of The Universe film going since, and remarkably, it’s going to take until 2026 to do so.

The 1987 version though – already something of an enduring cult hit – is now set to find a slightly bigger audience with a proper physical media release. The Deluxe Collector...

Halt! Who goes there? A new Small Soldiers 4K Blu-ray will be hitting shelves this summer
Image
Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.

The movie includes an all-star cast with Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartman, Kevin Dunn, David Cross and Denis Leary. Meanwhile, the voice cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Frank Langella, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Shearer, Bruce Dern, Clint Walker, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christina Ricci.

The description reads,...

Jared Leto’s ‘Tron: Ares’ Could Bring Back Iconic Character From ‘Tron: Legacy’ With 1 Plot Twist – Theory
Image
Jared Leto found fame for being an iconic actor with films like Requiem for a Dream and Dallas Buyers Club. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have your bad days. Starring in Morbius and Suicide Squad, Leto’s career diminished quietly as the actor took a break from Hollywood for a while.

However, the official teaser trailer for Tron: Ares has been released recently and Jared Leto is absolutely shining in it. With the iconic actor taking the role of Ares, a masterful theory is also taking shape.

Tron started with a 1982 film | Credits: Walt Disney Studios The teaser for Jared Leto’s Tron: Ares looks fabulous

Call it bad luck or a considerable number of things that went wrong, one thing that can be said certainly is that Jared Leto’s Morbius was a disastrous failure. As if Morbius wasn’t enough, Leto had already received...

Tony Talk: Olivier Award winners ‘Benjamin Button,’ ‘Giant,’ and ‘Oedipus’ could make a splash at the 2026 Tonys
Image
Welcome to Tony Talk, a column in which Gold Derby contributors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan offer Tony Awards analysis. No, your eyes do not deceive you! We are in fact discussing the 2026 Tony Awards today by way of Sunday night's Olivier Award winners in London celebrating the best of British theater.

David Buchanan: We're only three weeks away from the 2025 Tony Awards nominations, but we have to interrupt our predictions to address — believe it or not — the 2026 Tonys! Last night at the Oliviers, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Giant, and Fiddler on the Roof all tied as most-awarded productions of the night with three wins each. But let's start with Oedipus, which not only took home two trophies, but is also confirmed to transfer to Broadway this fall. How do you think its stunning cast, including last night's champ Lesley Manville, might fare stateside next year against a totally unknown Best Actress slate?...

Kevin Costner's Sports Drama Flop Is Getting A Second Life On Netflix
Image
If you grew up on Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters," have fond memories of the director's "Kindergarten Cop," or were swept up in the Reitman-produced "Space Jam"-mania in the '90s, you might not be aware of the last movie he called the shots on. Reitman, who passed away in 2022, directed his final film in 2014 with "Draft Day," a sports drama starring Kevin Costner as fictional Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver Jr.

The film sees Weaver prepping for the titular event while dealing with some personal events that are pretty big in their own right. Not only does his own boss, team owner Anthony Molina (Frank Langella), want to fire him, but his somewhat secret girlfriend Ali Parker (Jennifer Garner) is also pregnant. Amidst all this, Sonny takes a deal offered by the Seattle Seahawks that gives him and the Browns the first-round draft pick. Did he make the right choice?...

Image
He-Man is finally coming to live-action, and it seems like star Nicholas Galitzine has not taken the assignment lightly. Recent footage of Masters of the Universe shown at CinemaCon reportedly revealed Galitzine’s buff look and incredible blowout that gives him a straight out of the ‘80s cartoon look.

Travis Knight’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon is under production, and fans were delighted to see practical sets, costumes of Idris Elba’s Man-at-Arms, and the general vibe of the film more reminiscent of the cartoon series. The highlight seemed to be Jared Leto’s faceless glimpse as Skeletor.

Nicholas Galitzine summons the power of Grayskull with his Power Sword in the first image from Masters of the Universe
Image
Nicholas Galintzine has the power in the first image from Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe. Today, Amazon MGM Studios unveiled a close-up image of Galintzine as He-Man with the hero’s iconic Power Sword in hand. Though slightly dark, the picture shows the powerful weapon that helps Prince Adam transform into the all-powerful warrior of Eternia, He-Man, and the blade looks incredible. You can also glimpse Galintzine’s chiseled physique and He-Man’s vembraces tightly secured to his forearms. It’s funny. The photo leaves much to the imagination, but I’ll be damned if I’m not getting good vibes. The Power Sword looks legit Af, and Galintzine’s gym routine has treated him well.

Today’s Masters of the Universe image arrives as the film, directed by Bumblebee’s Travis Knight, continues production. Chris Butler wrote the Masters of the Universe screenplay based on earlier drafts...

Action icon Liam Neeson is headed to Max...but he doesn’t remember that he’s an action icon. Nosferatu Improved On A Tired Dracula Trope Dating Back 45 Years
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu!Robert Eggers' Nosferatu has ignited a fresh conversation about the vampire mythos, departing from the romanticized portrayals that have dominated cinema since the 1970s. Instead, Nosferatu is a stunning remake that puts the terror back into vampire lore. While classic adaptations like Dracula (1979) leaned into a tragic love story that helped to influence countless writers and directors, Eggers' film delves into the complicated reality of Count Orlok's coercion.

With the help of Nosferatu's stellar cast performances, Eggers explores the complexities of Ellen's agency and the unsettling nature of their twisted connection. This reimagining of the vampire legend challenges audiences to confront the darker aspects of desire and the insidious nature of evil, offering a chilling and impactful cinematic experience in Nosferatu's shocking scenes.

The Best Vampire Romance Movies
Image
Audiences tend to associate vampires with heart-pumping love stories. Sometimes lovers become vampires together and walk through eons of time with their partner. Other vampire romances are doomed to be star-crossed. Romantic vampire movies are more of a modern filmmaking sensibility--they used to be more horror-based than anything else.

The 1979 Dracula, starring Frank Langella, was one of the very first Dracula movies that was filmed to be highly romantic and less horrific. Vampire love stories and romantic suspense movies have only gained popularity since, and there are many more recent vampire movies that are just as romantic, if not more so.

Updated on January 5th, 2025, by Andrea Sandoval: with their sensual nature, vampires have always had a sexual place in literature. However, from predators to love objects, the vampire has changed a lot in more modern times. From 1979's Dracula, this figure became more and more approachable in romance and even comedy movies.

Roman Polanski's 'The Ninth Gate' Brings Johnny Depp Streaming Success on Tubi
Image
The Ninth Gate is a deemed cult classic supernatural thriller from 1999 that has pretty much been forgotten by many. That is perhaps why the Johnny Depp-led occult movie has scaled the Tubi movie chart 12 days after landing on the platform. Of course, there is also the fact that the film is now somewhat controversial when taking into account it is directed by the polarizing Roman Polanski, and stars Depp – we don’t need to tell you about that court case again, do we? – and Frank Langella, who became a Hollywood outcast following his firing from Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher after allegations of on-set inappropriate behavior.

The Ninth Gate delivered a stylish but ultimately hollow horror story 25 years ago, with Depp playing rare book dealer Dean Corso, who is hired by Langella’s wealthy collector Boris Balkan to authenticate a mysterious book called The Nine...

Jared Leto will play He-Man's nemesis Skeletor in new Masters of the Universe movie
Image
Amazon MGM is putting together a new movie based on Masters of the Universe, about the oiled-up fantasy hero He-Man and his battle against the skull-faced Skeletor. The series began as a collection of action figures released in the early 1980s, continued with an animated series released soon after, and landed in theaters with a live-action movie in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. The new Masters of the Universe movie will star Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man. Meanwhile, Oscar winner Jared Leto will play Skeletor.

Between playing the Joker in movies like Suicide Squad and playing the title character in Morbius, Leto has made a habit in recent years of playing freaky villains and anti-heroes, so this more or less fits that pattern. Variety also revealed who will be playing some of Skeletor's henchmen: Kojo Attah is Tri-Klops, Sam C. Wilson is Trap Jaw, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson is Goat Man.

The 15 Best 'So-Bad-It's-Good' Movies Of All Time
Image
Dig through cinema's litter box and all kinds of "gems" exist. Yeah, there are serious stinkers that require sage to cleanse rooms from their after-effects, but there are also diamonds in the rough -- the 'so-bad-it's-good' movies that keep audiences coming back over and over again. From a critical perspective, these productions are far from great in various criteria, but viewers don't care about such frivolous matters. The films hold a certain charm and captivating magic that money can't buy, possessing the ability to lift moods through the mere mention of their names.

Lest we forget, cinema proves to be a subjective experience. One person's Uwe Boll is another's Martin Scorsese. As long as everyone's enjoying themselves, let them. There's no need to be the gatekeeper of joy in life.

After Looking at Jared Leto’s Joker We Are Not Sure He Can be Creepier and More Intimidating Than Frank Langella’s Skeletor in He-Man Live Action Movie

Jared Leto adds another creepy character to his portfolio as he is tapped to play Skeletor in the live-action Masters of the Universe film. Leto will now star opposite Nicholas Galitzine’s He-Man. Jared Leto Cast as Skeletor in 'He-Man' Reboot
Image
The Masters of the Universe reboot has cast one of its most important characters, and filled the role with one of the most divisive actors in Hollywood. Jared Leto will be leading the roster of villains in the role of Skeletor. The Morbius and Suicide Squad actor has often been criticized in Hollywood, both for frequently turning to Method Acting to really embody his characters and for having “ruined” several of those characters, according to audiences.

What makes Leto’s casting strangely notable is that he seems to be following in the footsteps of Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, with Leto having played Joker in live-action (Suicide Squad) after Hamill voiced the Batman villain for many years, and now following Hamill’s recent voicing of Skeletor in Kevin Smith’s animated Masters of the Universe series on Netflix.

Superman Star Wendell Pierce Reveals His Perry White Look Ahead Of Today's Long-Awaited Trailer Debut
Image
The Wire and Jack Ryan star Wendell Pierce will play the Dcu's Perry White in Superman. While he has been spotted from afar in set photos, the actor just hyped up today's trailer with a new look at his cigar-chomping Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief.

We don't know what to expect from this version of Perry but on the page, he's a key supporting character in Clark Kent's world.

Pierce hasn't said much about his Superman role but, earlier this year, expressed his excitement about joining the franchise. "I did not know how big it was. I really did not know...the announcement was bigger than the story. That was a pleasant surprise," he admitted. "It's humbling, and I'm looking forward to it."

Many actors have played Perry White on screen, starting with Pierre Watkin in Columbia Pictures' popular Superman serials in the 1940s. John Hamilton, Lane Smith, Michael McKean, Jackie Cooper,...

The Toy Story movies focus on the perspective of toys that come to life whenever humans aren't around, and while Small Soldiers also features toys that come to life, they have no compunction about showing just how alive they are. In fact, some of them come into direct conflict with humans.

In the Toy Story universe, all toys come to life, while in the Small Soldiers universe, a select few are brought to life by a malfunctioning military microchip. The action was driven by a star-studded voice cast led by Tommy Lee Jones and Frank Langella in addition to the up-and-coming Dunst, and...

‘Nosferatu’ Review: Robert Eggers Does Justice to a Classic in a Grim, Gorgeous Redo
Image
Some images transcend the boundaries of the silver screen. They imprint themselves on the whole of human consciousness, until generations later people the world over recognize and feel them, even if they’ve never seen the original film. Stabbed in the shower by an unseen assailant in “Psycho.” Bicycling across the moon in “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.” To recreate these wonders is to risk making a pale imitation, to remind us only of how wonderful the original was, and rarely — if ever — make them new.

One of these enduring images is Count Orlock, played with otherworldly death and menace by Max Schreck in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic “Nosferatu.” Unlike Bela Lugosi, Gary Oldman and most of the other headlining motion picture vampires, Orlock was not an alluring sexual creature. He was an overgrown rat, emaciated and sunken, lurking in the shadows until he, too, became a shadow. He was nightmare writ large,...

The One Note Madonna Gave To Marvel For Deadpool & Wolverine
Image
It's hard to imagine "Deadpool & Wolverine" star Ryan Reynolds at a loss for words, but the actor was apparently pretty starstruck when he met the Queen of Pop, Madonna. In an interview with Radio Andy on SiriusXM, Reynolds and "Deadpool" franchise director Shawn Levy shared their experience consulting with the music legend, and apparently she had a bit of really sound advice for the duo.

Madonna is extremely picky about licensing her music, and she's especially particular about the song "Like a Prayer," which was used in the big climax of "Deadpool & Wolverine" and its final trailer, to great effect. In order to convince the woman behind such hits as "Vogue," "Lucky Star," and "Frozen" to let them use one of her greatest (and most controversial) songs, Levy and Reynolds had to meet with her in person. They were pretty nervous when they showed her the scene "Like a Prayer" would play during,...

This Cameron Diaz Sci-Fi Flop Is A Feature-Length Twilight Zone Episode
Image
When filmmaker Richard Kelly made his feature directorial debut "Donnie Darko" in 2001, it caused a stir in the arthouse world. "Donnie Darko" quickly accumulated a passionate cult who fell in love with its unbalanced hero (Jake Gyllenhaal) and its twisted time-travel plot. It was a combination psychological horror film and bizarro indie coming-of-age-in-the-1980s tale. Unsurprisingly, it only took a few additional years for "Donnie Darko" to become a regular staple on the midnight movie circuit, with fans dressing up as the film's enigmatic Frank the Bunny on Halloween.

The cult success of "Donnie Darko," however, seemingly went to Kelly's head as he appeared to become very, very convinced of his own importance as a new artistic voice in the indie film world. It took five years, but he eventually returned to theaters with the utterly gonzo "Southland Tales," an epic and ambitious film about the horrors of the George W. Bush administration.

Well, if you’re reading this, it means that you’ve survived yet another presidential election.

You might be thrilled with last night’s results, or you might be banging your head against a wall, wondering how you’re gonna survive the next four years.

Either way, at least we can all take solace in the fact that the quadrennial barrage of panhandling text messages has now come to an end.

(Dreamworks Pictures/20th Century Fox)

And now that you can once again turn on your TV without being bombarded by mudslinging political ads, what better time to revisit some of the best presidential biopics?

Politicians and pollsters might tell you they know what the future holds, but that picture is always a murky one.

Thankfully, we can always look to America’s past for encouraging reminders of challenges we’ve overcome and the heroes who have risen to the occasion.

Multiple Politicians Played Themselves in This Heartwarming Comedy
Image
Presidents are typically chosen by an election, not by their physical features. That's true in most cases, but not in the 1993 film Dave, which depicts a hilarious attempt to hide a president's stroke by hiring an impersonator who looks so similar that he can pass as the president. Directed by comedy legend Ivan Reitman, Dave depicts government work humorously but also with care and detail.

The movie stars Kevin Kline, a few years after his Oscar win, as the titular Dave, as well as President Mitchell, the man Dave impersonates. Sigourney Weaver stars opposite Kline as President Mitchell's wife, Ellen Mitchell, who has a troubled relationship with her husband but warms up to Dave's kind heart. In addition to those two stars, Dave features a number of cameos from real-life government workers as part of the film's commitment to detail.

The Best Portrayal Of A Corrupt President Came In An Unlikely Comedy
Image
Hollywood has been borderline obsessed with Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal for over half a century. Plenty of presidents or watershed legislative decisions have gotten adaptations, but given the recency of his crimes, Nixon is on another level. There have been 24 feature films centered on Nixon and/or Watergate, and that's not including the recent influx of prestige miniseries like 2023's "The White House Plumbers" about Nixon's political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy or 2022's "Gaslit," the Julia Roberts-starring series about Martha Mitchell, the wife of Nixon's at-the-time United States Attorney General.

I was born in 1990, which means my understanding of Nixon until, say, my junior year of high school, was what I had absorbed from pop culture. My introduction to Nixon's resignation speech was when it played over the radio in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and I learned about all of his specific...

Alison Brie says the Masters of the Universe script is really clever and talks about going back to watch the 80s cartoon
Image
After Cannon Films attempted to create a Masters of the Universe franchise with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella, the initial movie would crash and burn and take the studio with it. While there would be a cult following of that film developed, a new attempt at the property is finally set in motion. Masters of the Universe will star Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as Prince Adam/He-Man and Camila Mendes (Do Revenge) as Captain Teela. The project has been in the works for quite some time with a revolving door of directors, writers, and actors, but at long last, it seems like it’s finally happening. Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) will direct from a script by Chris Butler, with initial drafts penned by David Callaham, and Aaron & Adam Nee.

It was previously announced that Glow‘s Alison Brie is set to portray Evil-Lyn in the film,...

The True Story Behind The 'Banned' Nickelodeon Horror Movie Cry Baby Lane
Image
On October 28, 2000, kids all across America tuned into the Nickelodeon Snick programming block to watch a new horror movie called "Cry Baby Lane." As bowls of microwaved popcorn flowed over, living room lights went down, and children gathered in front of the television, no one could have predicted that everyone watching would become a part of history. Directed by Peter Lauer, "Cry Baby Lane" is about two brothers — the feeble Andrew (Jase Blankfort) and massive jerk Carl (Trey Rogers) — who love hearing ghost stories from the undertaker, Mr. Bennett (Frank Langella).

One night, the undertaker tells the story of a local farmer whose wife gave birth to conjoined twins (the movie uses the insensitive term "Siamese twins" because it was the year 2000), with one of the babies being noticeably evil. The farmer kept the twins locked up in an attic and away from the public eye before they eventually got sick and died together.

Oscars: All 8 times stars were nominated for playing U.S. presidents
Image
Sebastian Stan’s embodiment of a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” marks the first live action feature film portrayal of the 45th U.S. president (by someone other than himself). If this biographical performance brings the Marvel alum his first Oscar nomination, he will join seven other men who caught the academy’s attention by playing real-life commanders-in-chief. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out who presently belongs to that exclusive club.

This list technically includes eight entries, with Anthony Hopkins showing up twice as Richard Nixon (“Nixon”) and John Quincy Adams (“Amistad”). Nixon, who was also played by Frank Langella in “Frost/Nixon,” is one of two presidents mentioned twice here, with the second being Abraham Lincoln.

This group’s ratio of lead to supporting nominations is an even 3:1. As of now, 2013 Best Actor recipient Day-Lewis is the only person who has ever won an Oscar for playing an actual U.

How Nepotism Got Christian Slater His Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Cameo
Image
Cameos and "Star Trek" go together like cake and ice cream, in large part because celebrities are big fans of the franchise themselves and want a chance to be a part of it. Whether it's superfan Seth MacFarlane, who created the "Star Trek"-inspired series "The Orville" starring in two episodes of "Star Trek: Enterprise" as a Starfleet officer, or classic Dracula actor Frank Langella playing a Bajoran politician on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" because his kids were such fans, it's always great when people just want to be a part of the massive sci-fi franchise.

For one seriously intense "Star Trek" fan, getting the chance to play a tiny role in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" was more than just a dream come true, it was also a really lucky break courtesy of some good old nepotism. Actor Christian Slater could probably talk his way into a...

Star Trek's Frank Langella has something in common with the late-great Raul Julia
Image
Sometimes you see a name attached to a project and you just say "How?" Frank Langella is one of those names when it comes to Star Trek. The man's been everywhere and done everything. Excelling as a theater actor, Langella spun out of the theater and started doing major budget films like the 1979 remake of Dracula, the 1998 cult classic Small Soldiers, and more modern films like Frost/Nixon.

He's also the first man to portray Skeletor on the big screen, so the man has range. Yet, for a short spell in 1993, Langella played the Bajoran politician, Jaro Essa. A key figure during the first half of the season. It was a big get for the show, as the man had already won a Tony, an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award. Not bad for a show that was airing on syndication.

It was a nice little three-episode run and a sign...

Curses! Jared Leto is reportedly being offered the role of Skeletor in Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe
Image
Great Gwildor’s beard! Industry insider Jeff Sneider is sending shockwaves through Grayskull this Wednesday by saying Jared Leto is reportedly getting offered the role of Skeletor in Amazon’s upcoming Masters of the Universe. Bumblebee‘s Travis Knight directs the live-action adaptation of Mattel’s beloved action figure franchise from a script by Chris Butler, with Nicholas Galitzine leading the film as He-Man, Camila Mendes as the virtuous warrior Teela, and Alison Brie as the villainess Evil-Lyn.

The InSneider says Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto could play the skull-faced, blue-skinned thorn in He-Man’s side. Leto would command his army of iconic henchmen while shaking his fist and cackling, wielding influence and magic like the malevolent sorcerer fans know him to be. In his relentless pursuit of power, Skeletor longs to learn the secrets of Castle Grayskull and conquer the land of Eternia to feed his ego and seemingly limitless power.

Morbius Actor Jared Leto Reportedly Offered Skeletor Role In Masters Of The Universe Movie
Image
As Amazon MGM and Mattel continue to cast the main roles in the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe reboot, we may know which actor is being courted to play the villainous Skeletor.

According to Jeff Sneider, none other than Jared Leto has been offered the role.

Leto will be very familiar to Cbm fans, having played the Joker in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and the titular Spider-Man villain in Sony's much-maligned Morbius. He also appeared in Blade Runner 2049, and has a key role in Disney's upcoming Tron: Ares.

If he accepts, Leto will join Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Riverdale alum Camila Mendes as his right-hand woman and (possible) love-interest, Teela, and the recently-cast Alison Brie as Skeletor's second-in-command, Evil-Lyn.

Previous rumors have claimed that Sacha Baron Cohen was in contention to play the iconic baddie.

He-Man's nemesis was played by Frank Langella in the previous live-action movie,...
